The Next Speaker of the House

The selection of the next Speaker will likely be very interesting.  If the GOP wins, their margin will almost certainly be tiny.  If the Dems win most scenarios have their margin fairly small too.

Right now RCP predicts the Dems will pick up 25.5 seats.  Call it 26.  That's 221 to 214.  They can have 3 members get pissy and still select their person.  More than that have already said they won't vote for Nancy.  If the GOP wins the Freedom Caucus is not behind McCarthy.  But will they vote for him anyway?

There is a small chance that the Dems win big enough to put Nancy in over the defectors.  And there is muttering about having Nancy as a "transitional" Speaker, whatever that means.

What happens if the GOP wins?  What happens if the Dems win with a small margin?

Nancy needs to step aside and let some new blood take charge. She's already accomplished just about everything she can in the House and has a place in history as the first female Speaker. Also, she has a terrible stigma attached to her. She's a lightning rod for conservatives since Hillary is out of the picture and that's not what Dems or our country needs right now.

Repubs will just choose whomever the Freedom Caucus dictates.

For the same reasons that the Dallas Morning News' endorsement of Beto was insightful,  I would apply the same reasoning applies here.  Pelosi served, has had her turn, and is disliked by every (R) in the nation (dislike merging into hatred/visceral reaction for too many). Finding a new, unifying and better-representative voice in the House is the only to put out an open hand looking for a good-faith shake.  All idealism aside, Rs keeping the White House in 2020 will be easier if Pelosi is still their Boogey Man, and there too many better strategic options available.

Like Tenacious D told Ronnie James Dio - You're too old to rock, no more rockin' for you.  We're taking you home, but we will sing a song about you.

That's not going to happen.  Too many Rs in the House are tied into protecting Trump at all costs.

We just think we've seen divisive politics.  Wait until the Rs lose the House, and are faced with the House investigating Trump and Friends.

Say what you want but she’s quite unimpressive and uninspiring in this speech. DNC needs newer blood in its leadership.

It was painful. They need someone else leading them into this 2020 election.

Fucking this.  The Dems need to pick someone else and take away one of the GOP's favorite boogeymen.

They aren't going to because she actually knows what she's doing. That's important for a Speaker.

So is projecting an image that your base can get behind. Especially with 2020 right around the corner.

The only reason people hate Pelosi is because of the propaganda, 9/10 people can’t explain exactly why they hate her.

All that hate for her is already baked in.  But yeah, let’s put someone else up there for the pubs to vilify as the new boogie man.

This is hopefully the start of the end of Trump in 2020. As someone that has voted primarily R most of my life and went D this election, Nancy Pelosi doesn’t need to be the face of the next 2 years. The Dem’s need someone that will keep the movement energized and that can stand at the podium and not fumble through a pretty important speech. If they are going to go after Trump, there will be a lot of camera time over the next 24 months and they need to make it count.

That pretty much goes for 99.99% of people's opinions about every politician. Even on this forum only about 0.01% of the political threads actually discuss anything other than propaganda.

Dude, just no. I can fully explain why I dislike  Trump solely on the behavior I witness from him live. That’s not propaganda.

It’s not just because of the propaganda. There’s a significant (and incredibly sexist) bias against “shrill” older women.

She is without question the most effective politician in the House of Representatives.

She makes John Boehner and Paul Ryan look like amateurs.

And she outlasted them both.

All true.

But yeah, she's old. There will be a succession plan announced and it will hopefully be followed through before the 2020 elections, otherwise some of the newly won seats will be in danger.

Well, last time she served as speaker the Democrats lost 63 seats in 2 years and she had an 11% approval rating.  She is worth about $100M so she clearly understands the plight of the working man.  She is great at propogating her far left talking points.  Her speech last night was fabulous.  I welcome her.  She is perfect

That's been evident since Tuesday November 8, 2016.

This isn't a time for the Democrats to beat the dust off and trot out the same old Clintonites. Clintonism is fucking dead, and the D's recapture of the House was not a re-embrace of it. It was very disturbing that Pelosi trotted out on stage, of all people, Steny Hoyer, the guy who urged a Bernie-crat in Colorado to drop out of a race.

Donna Shalala says not so fast.  No really, she might break a hip at anything quicker than rascal speed.

Additionally, if Trump and Pence are implicated and are removed, the notion of a placeholder President Pelosi will not sit well.

This is the correct take. The problem with Pelosi isn't that she's a GOP punching bag, they'd turn any replacement into the same punching bag for their base, the problem is she's out of touch with the American people and doesn't understand that she's in a fight, not a business meeting.

I don't think Pelosi is that brand you want to bring into 2020, but the next best candidate is Tim Ryan - who alienates the progressives and might make a stab at 2020 himself.
