aggy joke in real life:

Did you hear about the plane crash in the College Station graveyard?

Aggies recovered 1372 bodies.

Who knew single-engine Cessnas could hold so many.

I bet this is either the banana in the tailpipe, or maybe the boxes of drones in the cargo truck driven to plant thing

I’m guessing boxes of drones.  Or Russian incompetence.  Also, somebody mentioned they sell that stuff for hard currency as well.

Huh, cool artifact I found in the back of our closet (we’re cleaning all of it out).

2017 flight to Kyiv on UIA. We already avoided any routing that took us over eastern Ukraine, because fuck Russia shooting down civilian planes.

VERY humble. We were definitely on a budget that trip.

And the flight from Kyiv to Yerevan? Shit, there may have been livestock on it.

When you fly Arianna you can talk. Or Phuket Air. First class. I got served a boxed juice.

So one of my older relatives, who has parroted Fox News/Russian talking points in the past, sent me a video this morning that "I need to see" about what's happening in Ukraine and Russia and that it will "catch me up on what's really happening" and that I need to subscribe to this guy and I'm all like

Here We Go Epix GIF by PENNYWORTH

And the name of the youtuber was "Jake Broe" so I immediately did think "oh fuck, here we go" because I figured it was some young dude that might be parroting Russian talking points, but nope.

We've had arguments discussions before, and ironically the guy literally drove M113s in Vietnam - it was only a couple of years out of his life back in the 1960s, but in his den he has several 8x10s of him and his buddies in the Army in Vietnam and with his M113, and he's got a large painting/print of an M113 in the jungle on his wall. He has admitted he's pleased that the M113s have a second lease on life, and I've gotten through to him on that.

Anyways, surprisingly, the video was not terrible. I can't stand the cadence/pacing/whatever, but this video is only about 12 hours old and has 300,000+ views, and that's good.  I don't know that I would listen to him again because I did not learn anything new, but I'm pleased my relative was following the guy, and I would recommend it to more boomer uncles (and dads).

To make a claim for the luggage theft at the Kiev airport?

Good memory, dude.  It remains our only major "travel crime" incident.  And now that the boy has multiple Ukrainian friends, that story gets told at one point or another, and every last one of them is mortified and apologetic.

One "upside" that may come from this is the purposeful and deliberate accelerating rejection of Russian culture (which is one of pure corruption and crime) and a turn towards more western norms of the rule of law.  The young generation very much wants to show the world "we're not all Russian-controlled corrupt bandits," and are going out of their way to make that distinction obvious.

TLDR; nothing will make you turn away from a culture faster than that culture invading and bombing your country.

Ukraine Increases Drone Strikes On Russian Military And Oil Trains.pdf

This is an interesting Forbes article about Ukraine’s months long focus on destroying the Russian train system. That has not gotten as much publicity as the attacks on oil and gas assets.

Because it is behind a pay wall, I just posted the PDF version of the article.  I was not aware that Ukraine was doing such excellent work on Russia’s train and railway system, which is the prime means by which Russia move things around its large country.

It also helps explain the other aspect of why there are shortages.

People wonder when they will drop the Kerch bridge, and my guess is when they've made sure that fuel supplies to Crimea and the bordering areas are extremely constrained (not just civilian but military) and when they've done enough damage to trains/railway that Russia wouldn't be able to reliably resupply it by land. Oh, and they'll probably wait for Russian forces in Crimea to burn through any fuel reserves they have.

….. i’m sure the Russian economy is so strong right now that it won’t miss a few rubles in wheat sales

With a severe drought, the Ukes need to send simple incendiary bombs on windy days into the Russian wheat fields. Burn it all, right before winter.

That  mouthflapping clown was probably not taught about the 17,500,000 tons of military supplies that the USA shipped to the Soviet Union during WW2.
Most of it was written off by the USA.

Quote

In total, the U.S. deliveries to the USSR through Lend-Lease amounted to $11 billion in materials (equivalent to $148 billion in 2023):[56] over 400,000 jeeps and trucks; 12,000 armored vehicles (including 7,000 tanks, about 1,386[57] of which were M3 Lees and 4,102 M4 Shermans);[58] 11,400 aircraft (of which 4,719 were Bell P-39 Airacobras, 3,414 were Douglas A-20 Havocs and 2,397 were Bell P-63 Kingcobras)[59] and 1.75 million tons of food.[60

You could reasonably call that a war crime, destroying food.  We are above that.
