‘We Can Only Be Enemies’
One family’s experience of Vladimir Putin’s invasion offers a path to the end of the war.

By Peter Pomerantsev

This is really painful.  Ukrainians and Russians and Russians are a nation of bookworms, at least among the middle class. I have never been in a home without a carefully tended and thoughtful library.

Quote

The Horbonoses’ home, a house they had been building for 30 years, was completely destroyed; their library burned for two days before collapsing into rubble. When Irina couldn’t take it anymore, she would begin to cry and scream at the soldiers in the darkness of the cellar: “We had everything! What are you doing here?” The Russians would only sit in the dark, silent.

it's utterly brutal and awful.  But it's also maybe the most realistically hopeful piece I've ready during this whole shitshow.  It's going to take a long time to get shit right.  Patience is not something people are great at, but it will be required here.  Any sort of solution to the bigger and underlying problems here is going to take a long fucking time.  This hot war is just a small -- albeit unbelievably important -- chapter in the process.

When we talk about nukes, we need to remember that we haven’t tested anything since 1992 ourselves. Russia signed and ratified the comprehensive test ban treaty, we signed but haven’t yet ratified. Everyone but Pakistan, India, and the Norks are in about the same boat as far as “not doing tests anymore.”

We had a fairly substantial scandal a few years ago about the Air Force guys manning our land base strategic nuke forces failing protocol training and suffering moral issues.  Since the goal is to never use the nukes, it’s gotta be hard to keep forces motivated and frosty.

I imagine the Russians are several orders of magnitude worse in their training and preparation at all levels.

‼️ Russian equipment is already in the center of Kiev.

Exhibits from the war can be seen near the House of Officers near Mariinsky Park.

Terrible forest fires are reported in Siberia. A state of emergency has been declared in the Minusinsk district of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. There are not enough fire brigades, because all forces have been transferred either to Ukraine or to its borders.

The State Bureau of Investigation announces the detention of proxies of ex-People's Deputy Ilya Kiva, who were to organize provocative actions involving "aunts" and destabilize the situation in Odesa region.

Rashists take out bodies of killed Mariupol residents in the same trucks as they bring "humanitarian aid"

Local authorities say the Russian military is trying to cover up its crimes. They use humanitarian convoys to take out the corpses of Mariupol residents.

Google translate a bit off. The word “titushki” rendered as “aunts” is a Ukrainian term for paid agent provocateurs- hoodlums, soccer ultras, denizens of MMA gyms— that Yanukovych and later pro-Russian figures pay to create havoc and turn peaceful demonstrations violent.

The US and other countries have sent many motorized vehicles (M109, M113, Hummers, etc) to Ukraine. Do the Ukrainians have access to enough diesel to maintain combat readiness on all other them?

Be funny if they purchased some from Russia and used it to wreck havoc on all their units.

Good question. To be honest though, (and this is just my opinion based on my military experience and watching this all unfold) I don't think a bunch of light vehicles is really the way to go here. As we've seen, there is a real threat of mines and heavy vehicles like Tanks, Troop carriers, and mobile artillery are getting wrecked daily. Humvees are slow topping out around 60mph, and great against small arms, but this isn't a mobile war we're seeing, so they'll get smoked pretty easily by most of everything Russia has. We're seeing trenches and building cover along front lines and artillery and drone/aircraft doing all the work. Aside from ferrying people back and forth I honestly don't think the light vehicles will do much. They'll probably be better served giving them Toyota hilux's like we were giving Iraq/Afghanistan and the Taliban had
