Some of you having zero ability to admit this potentially is a good thing for US interest are as bad as the right wingers who tried to spin the Obama admin taking out UBL in Pakistan as a bad thing. With Trump we gotta take an occasional good with the bad. Devil is in the details for sure though.

Flip it around. We know what is happening by de-legitimatizing their illegal actions, it's in our face right now. Russia illegally invades Ukraine without giving a fuck about international laws and norms, and China spends each day coming up with new ways to isolate and bully Taiwan on their way towards invasion.

This is realpolitik. Sternly worded letters from the UN aren't cutting it, and sanctions are bypassed.

It is not realpolitik. It is naked aggression against a sovereign nation to capture their resources. It is clearly illegal and potentially globally destabilizing simply to line the pockets of Trump and his cronies. Don’t be obtuse

And, I suppose it's worth noting that Russia is an internationally sanctioned pariah state for invading Ukraine.

We lost a good bit of whatever moral authority we had on that one. And against China.

What exactly about this current admin makes you think they are capable of pulling off something as complex as a peaceful regime change?

You're not wrong, and I'm not a fan of moving away from NATO etc. Unfortunately, through incompetence and atrophy, the world has moved away from following "international law" and the consequences of not doing so have severely weakened. In the current day, we must advance our interests as best we can.

What logically follows if we don't? What happens if we don't advance our interests, in the name of optics and legalities, while the Chinese and Russians do? We weaken ourselves just so we feel better about it?

I think that Ukraine offered a tremendous opportunity to reinvigorate both NATO and reinforce clear norms in a way that we could use to our benefit and we are squandering jit to run up the score on an FCS team.

Yes, because this administration has such a long and sterling track record of executing plans flawlessly.

No one is questioning whether Maduro is a bad guy that Venezuela and the world would be better off without.

So was Sadaam Hussein. So was Bashar Al-Assad.

We are questioning this regime's judgment in deposing him and its ability to produce a net good for Venezuela or anyone else in the aftermath.

I think those concerns are quite valid.

Most (not all) things that we do that are good for US interests have broad support, not only worldwide but at home and we work a little bit at seeing them through. I get that Maduro was an asshole leader who was terrible for his people but support for this both global and especially locally when there seem to be A LOT of other things more pressing to your average American tells me we probably fuck up the end game hard on this one when this administration inevitably gets bored with it in about a week or so and moves on to other stuff in their whack a mole approach to governing.

I didn’t expect Macron to endorse this, this hard. Trying to keep the Ukraine discussions inside the lines.

The Venezuelan people are now free from the dictatorship of Nicolás Maduro and have every reason to celebrate.

By seizing power and trampling on fundamental freedoms, Nicolás Maduro has committed a grave offense against the dignity of his own people.

The transition that is now underway must be peaceful, democratic, and respectful of the will of the Venezuelan people. We hope that President Edmundo González Urrutia, elected in 2024, will be able to ensure this transition as soon as possible.

Well, like I said, the first one is also a superseding indictment. So something came before it.

The docket number indicates it might go back as far as 2011.

And indeed it appears to. https://www.pacermonitor.com/public/case/10470024/USA_v_CarvajalBarrios

The lead defendant there, however, was a Chavista general that later became an enemy of Maduro. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cl%C3%ADver_Alcal%C3%A1_Cordones Maduro was also a defendant.

Both administrations have handled the Ukraine war about as poorly as possible.

This administration could not handle something as simple as giving a ton of old equipment we haven’t used in years to Ukraine, equipment we are literally spending money to store in the high desert or warehouses, and that we will never use again.

This administration could not handle something as simple as knowing when they are getting played by Putin, even though the evidence is literally and publicly coming out of the mouths of Putin’s people, who openly mock Trump.

This administration campaigned on releasing the files of a child trafficking sex ring and the AG claimed she had the files ready to go back in February and now we find out they don’t know what they have and that they changed their mind’s repeatedly over the last six months about whether to protect pedophiles.

This same administration changed their minds repeatedly in just a few days about whether we were killing survivors from those boat strikes because they couldn’t get their story straight

But the very same people that don’t understand right from wrong in Ukraine and who don’t know they are getting publicly played by Putin while everybody else knows, who can’t release files that were promised to be released almost a year ago, is going to suddenly get their shit together when it comes to regime change for a nation of 28 million people?

It's always fascinating/disappointing to me how quickly and easily it is to use the propaganda machines to make the American public all in on foreign intervention that they couldn't have given two shits about a couple of month ago.

"Reports of WMDs? Well, shit, we have no choice but to invade."

"Of course Iran poses an imminent nuclear threat that must be eradicated with a super cool show of force at the behest of Bibi."

"Absolutely, the punishment for drug trafficking (even marijuana) should be immediate and unexpected execution by missile without trial. We should even murder helpless survivors because fuck 'em all."
