I don’t think it’s on Colbert. It’s just a dying format and… the olds that still enjoy late talk shows are watching Gutfeld on Fox News.

Personally, prefer reruns of Graham Norton.  No politics and alcohol flowing.

The real question is why would CBS not pull the plug sooner while they were losing more money than the WNBA annually?  Steve sure didn't take a pay cut

Because there's a half-decent chance that finances improve if everybody is tuning in to see Colbert "unrestrained".

I'm slightly surprised as well, but maybe there are a lot of clauses if they cancel the show and the amount they would lose would be more than if they kept it running until next May.

There's a Johnny Carson Youtube channel  with 750 videos and it's pretty awesome.

Jon Stewart must have gotten word that TDs will be gone, too... He had a lot of Fucks to give last night.

I wonder if Amazon or Netflix would be willing to sponsor a daily or near-daily talk show with the two of them.  Not something they normally do.

John Oliver had some pretty interesting reporting with his style of comedy.  It's the only show of that vein I can still tolerate

I would tell you to fuck off, but instead feel sorry for someone so bitter now that the shining light in your life  in Colbert will be taken away.

Sure you are all a tingle just waiting for whatever stinging retort Stephen comes up with for tonight to hurl at Trump.

He was the highest ratings getter, but those numbers are down from an average of 5+million viewers for the Leno/Letterman years to 1million viewers.

cost $100 million to produce, Steve takes $20 million a year and the show loses $40 million a year.

streaming killed the audience and sponsors

He averages almost 2.5 million viewers a night and that 40 million dollar loss isn’t verified and was a rumor started by some website called Puck and regurgitated by the NY Post, hardly legit sources. I’m sure I can guess where you got your talking points from.

I do agree with the overall sentiment that the talk show format is fading, but Colbert and his show are not why.

Reuters story that is linked below mentions the loss of $40M attributed to an unknown source,  also mentions ad revenue down 40% since 2018, and that most recent ratings for the period ending in May at 1.9M.

Not sure whether you consider Reuters legit or not, but it isn't Fox, Puck, the New York Post etc... amazing how things change and yet stay the same with so much energy and time spent on whether a news source can be trusted or not.

They are all running off that puck websites 40 million quote from anonymous sources. CBS would’ve backed it up if true to legitimize the cancelling. If they do then I’ll believe it, but until then it’s just a rumor that seems to only be repeated by people who want to see Colbert go down for being woke or liberal or anything other than maga.

As someone who has actually watched Graham Norton, it’s telling that you think it’s not political.

take all the episodes of graham norton you’ve ever seen in your life, then double it, and it’s still not close to the amount of graham norton episodes I’ve personally seen with my eyes.  get off your dad’s computer, the adults are talking.

John Stewart alluded to it last night... the show is not making money now, and neither is 60 Mins... but those are the shows off which the valuation was created, so it seems like a stab in the back to do it now...

"losses" are a trick in the entertainment biz, so it's hard to say... the cost allocation could be all over the place.

Jon Stewart also said flat out that these shows values are what led the CBS valuation for the skywalker merger. I didn't catch him alluding to the late show losing money.

Puck is part of The Ringer network, and is run by Matt Belloni. He’s a legitimate entertainment reporter. He’s also an attorney so he understands the consequences of throwing bullshit against the wall. Additionally none of his guests, including a WSJ entertainment reporter, have refuted the number.

I haven’t watched late night since Letterman signed off.

Conan was never the same since leaving The Late Show.

I’ll watch Carson while I’m flipping if Ed or a guest I like is on the couch.

If I were to blame anybody for the collapse of late night TV, I’d blame NBC. They foisted generic, mediocre bullshit on audiences with Leno and now Fallon. Fallon can’t through a single SNL sketch without breaking, had a nothing stand up and movie career, and the Peacock handed him the keys to dad’s Porsche. I just don’t get it. I’d imagine getting the host gig involves quite a bit of glad handing and politicking.

No he won't, he's good through May on CBS, and then he'll land somewhere with a nice fat check and whatever format he wants.  Same thing will probably happen with Stewart, and I'm actually serious about those two ending up together with a helluva an axe to grind, and they won't be dealing with Paramount bullshit over the merger.  And if one or both are fired, they'll still have a nice fat check from Paramount and then whereever they land.
