Why would it be a problem to eschew negative racial views? Isn't that exactly what he should do?

I'm teasing you because you don't know what words mean (look up "eschew"), but do you have evidence that he spent "the majority of his life" expressing "racial views that are condemned if a white speaker claims them against blacks"?

Besides, do you sincerely see no difference between the speech of an oppressor versus the speech of the oppressed? Likely not, I guess, though it should be pretty obvious.

No, he didn't. You are a huge fan of just fabricating the histories of black people you don't like.

Also, Obama never should have condemned Wright as a person or even the controversial sermon, because the controversial sermon was awesome and completely inkeeping with mainstream Christian thought.

Obama was completely scandal-free in his private life.

I meant to say “expounding” but had a brain fart. I don’t think it’s quite the ordeal you’re making it.

Absolutely I have evidence. Is David Duke a respected figure in society? Malcolm X’s rhetoric was the same only flipped on the race of the protected and aggressors. There is a reason we have a MLK Day but not a Malcolm X Day. The KKK thinks that whites are oppressed too. The Nation of Islam is considered a hate group just like the KKK. Saying that an oppressed minority group can argue segregation and violence because they’ve earned it isn’t an argument I can buy.

Cut the bullshit with “black people I don’t like” accusation. The entire point of this thread is to discuss the racist photo of an elected official and the potential influence it has on his ability to govern. Malcolm X was brought up explicitly to make a point: Racism is celebrated in some circumstances and disavowed in others. (A direct argument to someone’s comment on Conferedate statues) Nothing was fabricated. I wanted to know if people can be redeemed for their actions by those quick to condemn.

Speaking of fabrications, you may want to research the Obama-Wright controversy. It wasn’t just a sermon. I voted for Obama, so sorry, you can’t use that one either.

Malcolm X didn't spend the majority of his life saying racist things. That's a lie.
Barack Obama didn't grow up in Jeremiah Wright's (cool) church. That's a lie.

If you don't like being called out for lying about blacks you dislike, don't lie about blacks you dislike.

Expound on this nonsense.

Wait, so you think Obama "grew up" under some hateful radical but you voted for him anyway? lol fuck off

Hey, let's take a break from this weak reed Northam, and imagine we're in the future. Which (semi) normal obnoxious behavior do we engage in now that will be deal-breakers for us in the future? I can think of a few:

-- Cussing random strangers via internet. All y'all stupid shit-burping fucks are guilty of this. Dumbasses.

--Whacking it to porn. If you can see the screen, the screen can see you. Poor dumb Northam thought nobody would ever see his book. Bet your poor dumb ass thinks the same about SpankyDwarf.com

--Making bold declarative sentences. Don't laugh, there are already people who feel threatened by this, do you think? I don't know, maybe I'm wrong.

--Mocking dogs by making barking sounds.

--Forcing others to serve you in an oppressive system of exploitation and cruelty, aka ordering at the drive-through in Whataburger, whose colors tragically evoke the violent history of the Protestant Plantations in Ulster. Your ignorance of that history only makes it worse.

--Failing to acknowledge the superiority of sentient mushroom colonies. Don't hide behind the excuse that nobody knew about that. Robt. E. Lee was a traitor to Basidiomycota, and so are you.

It is odd to have grown up at the same time as these guys, in Ala-fucking-Bama, and have never seen somebody in blackface. yet it seems to be a requirement for holding public office.

I saw the real George Wallace, and KA dipshits dressed as Confederate soldiers (an insult to any actual soldiers in any army ever), and some sorority across the state had girls in blackface which caused a shit-storm the week it happened, but I missed out on this casual blackface-is-just-a-costume thing.

I confess, when I read "Black Like Me" in school, I thought it would be cool to do that to spy on Whitey. But it's pretty easy to spy on people without any costume work.

Man, comparing Malcolm X to confederates. That's impressive.

I don't think "comparing" means what you think it means. I did notice that you didn't answer the question.

20 hours ago, Spankytoes said:

Understood. The only reason the Malcolm X comparison was made was to illustrate that a person's actions/speech at one time may not ultimately define them as a person. Yet, Malcolm X is celebrated for spending the majority of his life eschewing racial views that are condemned if a white speaker claims them against blacks.

If we want to talk about elected officials, Bill Clinton comes to mind. We know for a fact that he was a womanizer. It didn't affect his ability to govern. Barack Obama grew up in Jeremiah Wright's church and failed to condemn him as a person until he was left with no choice. Listening to Wright's anti-American sermons did not affect his ability to govern. In both instances, people from both sides of the aisle insisted that Clinton and Obama resign for their association with moral outrage. Neither did and the chatter died down. I think both Presidents did some good things while in office despite the scandals in the private lives. There is no evidence to suggest that Northam being a willing participant in this photo has had any bearing on his ability to serve the people of VA either.

It's weird, but there appears to be strength in numbers.

Maybe none of them end up resigning.

That's the max entertainment scenario. Like watching zit-popping videos.

You thought this would be a zit-popping video, and you wanted to watch it. Ew.

Just imagine how bad this Virginia stuff would be if everyone had camera phones and Facebook in the early 80s.

As bad as it is now?

I go back to my LBJ example (per Caro in his excellent books).

LBJ wouldn't stand a chance today. But... he got things (some things, anyway) done. Good things. Civil rights. Voting rights.

What we have now is some kind of perverse (yes, perverse) standard in effect that seems to demand moral perfection. What we are going to end up with, politician-wise imo, is a group of anodyne eunuchs ala Mike Pence. Fuck that. We are not going to get anything meaningful done with politicians like Mike Pence.

But how does one balance this? I don't know. But it is too easy to take moral pot shots at any racial peccadilloes in one's past. And I by no means intend to defend the Virginia governor and his actions.

Fuck identify politics.

That's a bit simplistic, don't you think?

Yes, you're correct. But there's more to it than that. In fact, one could argue that it was the faction that was against "moral perfection" that elected Trump.

But that brings me back to this: today's (internet) culture is way, way, way too concerned with the "gotcha" moment, with capturing the 24-hour news cycle. It drives each group (Trumpkins, progressives, et al) to the bottom. We're more concerned with showing our cleverness and being able to make some kind of Sponge Bob meme.

Dear God: please bring back Ted Koppel and George Will. Yes, two white men. Crucify me.

Technically I guess it was. The difference is the reason for the treason.

Taxation without representation vs muh slaves!

Good thing those traitors in the 1770s didn’t own slaves.  We’d have to scrub all of their statues and honors.

What is your point here? That we should still be a British colony? That somehow because the founding fathers owned slaves, its ok to wear black face in the 80s? That one treasonous revolution for one reason makes a different treasonous revolution for a completely different reason also ok? Or is this just some sort esoteric both side-ism point scoring contest?

What the fuck are you talking about?

Can’t stop laughing

The blackface hoax has been mostly ignored by bigger personalities on the right, aside from a retweet from Republican consultant Dave Carney, who has worked for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Texas Governor Greg Abbott. Carney declined to comment to The Daily Beast.

I voted for all three of them (but supported Perriello in the primary) and I'm beyond disgusted by the whole situation.   I want Northam gone and Fairfax too, if he really said that about the accuser in that setting.  I want to know more about the Herring story before deciding on him.

What in the wide wide world of sports is going on???

I went to Alafuckingbama and attended many a fraternity and sorority party and never once saw a single person in black face.

(Unless you count the lame black eyed pea costume, where you wrote a letter P on a T-shirt and used eye black around your eye.)

Yeah, there was probably what would now be seen as cultural appropriation or cultural insensitivity - sombreros and Mexican ponchos, geisha outfits, white trash get ups etc.

The only blackface incident I remember happened at Auburn back in 2010. Dumbass Ryan Pugh dressed up as Reggie Bush, black face and all. And he caught a raft of shit for it here in the state sports media and on shows like Finebaum.

Didn’t help that they were in the middle of their title run and were already getting tons of negative press because of the Cam Newton stuff and Pugh was a dirty chop blocking shitburger.

eeb58ba6625bf2317c461aac3ab5bf52.jpg

I mean, I know Virginia is the home of Robert E. Lee and birthplace of The Confederacy and all that but I don’t think of it as being stereotypically backwards with regards to race like Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, etc.

Those folks are IN TO their black face apparently.
