  1. There were whispers of Herman's drinking/partying, during his ISU days specifically, when he was hired here. We all know the Zach Smith strip cub story, so I'm sure there's some truth to the word that the guy likes to drink. However, I find it very hard to believe that Herman would still be employed if it was an open secret that he's a functioning alcoholic, showing up to work under the influence and not being able to go out without a driver. Think about how ridiculous that is. For one, it's 2019. That would get out. Two, would you expect UT to just tolerate that behavior as the university's most well known representative? Even cynically - would you expect them to tolerate that for $5mm+ annually and 7-6, 10-4, 7-5? According to this thread, we're to believe Herman is hated by nearly all, no obe has any real faith in him, the AD has to both force staff changes and actively manage/cover up his alcohol problem, the buyout money is ready, and a solid to exceptional candidate for replacement has been lined up... And the decision is to keep him around? Lol okay. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk

  2. Yes, the University of Texas has to balance public obligation with academic excellence. It's also in a constant battle with the State legislature to be more selective with admissions. The fact that you think admissions rates are the only thing to measure a university by is your issue, not the university's. In fact, given the local government where UT exists, it's arguable that the University of Texas is pretty much as great an academic institution as it could possibly be given its mission and scope. Let's look at some specific colleges where automatic admission students don't tend to go. And we'll use USNWR because every system has its flaws but you like that one because you think it suits your argument. Engineering - #11 in the United States. Some schools Texas is ahead of - Cornell, UCLA, Princeton, Penn, Northwestern, Duke, Wisconsin, etc. Business - #19 in the United States. Florida, Rice, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, etc. Nursing - #24 in the United States. Penn State, Boston College, UC-Davis, Miami, etc. Computer Science - #10. Cal Tech (!!!), Michigan, Columbia, UCLA, Wisconsin, Harvard, UC-San Diego, Penn, Purdue, Rice, etc. Mathematics - #14. Duke, Penn, Wisconsin, UC-San Diego, Illinois, Northwestern, Georgia Tech, Purdue, Rice, etc. I could go on. The University of Texas is an outstanding academic institution. The fact that there are thousands of auto-admits walking around the Liberal Arts buildings does nothing to change that, and in fact is a positive when analyzing the University's performance. UT has an obligation to help advance the interests of education in the State of Texas. Allowing those who started from a lower rung of society to experience college and get a degree is immeasurably important. Those children of high school dropouts eventually have children themselves and they teach the value of education to those future Texans. In short, you're wrong in almost every way that you could possibly be wrong.

  4. Sorry, RD, You seem to be a little misinformed here. There’s a really smart and plugged in poster on this site that knows for a fact CDC isn’t going to make any changes before realignment because of stability, so Herman getting fired next year is impossible.

  6. I mean, really, those billboards that say "HOMES FROM THE $200s" might as well say "SI, SE HABLA AGGIE" I can just imagine what the initial conversation between an Aggie couple and a realtor is like. Realtor: "So tell me what you're looking for." Aggie: "Welp it's got to be big, it oughta be the biggest house on the street." Aggie wife: "It should definitely be enormous, like 4000 square feet, with at least ten bedrooms." Realtor: "Uh.... OK, and bathrooms?" Aggie wife: "I mean, I guess one?" Aggie: "THE HOUSE HAS GOTTA BE BRICK!" Aggie wife: "Oh yeah it's gotta be brick." Realtor: "What about a pool?" Aggie: "Pools are for faggots." Realtor: "Well, OK, cross that off, it's just that I sold a few houses to Longhorn graduates recently and those homes have pools so I thought--" Aggie (interrupting): "IT'S GOTTA HAVE A HUGE FUCKIN' POOL! THE BIGGEST POOL ON THE BLOCK." Aggie wife: "Can we make sure it's in one of those neighborhoods that only has Aggies in it? I mean good folks like me and Taylor. You know. You know what I'm getting at, folks just like us. EXACTLY like us, down to the smallest detail, like the kind of flowers they plant and the kind of car they drive and their skin color." Realtor (shrugging): "Yeah, sure, OK, whatever you say. I see you have three kids, are schools important?" Aggie: "What does school have to do with anything? Aggie wife: "Well as long as the school has got a lot of students in it, that proves how good it is. Just make sure we zone to a really packed school." Realtor: "That makes as much sense as anything else you've told me. What's your budget?" Aggie: "TEN BILLION DOLLARS, IF WE WANT IT WE'LL BUY IT, IF WE BUY IT WE'LL PAY DOUBLE FOR IT JUST TO PROVE WE CAN! I GOT A MASTERCARD AND A VISA!" Aggie wife: "Yes, that, exactly." Realtor: "Terrific. Welcome to Manor! I hope you'll be really happy here."

  10. I think our offensive line is getting a bad rap. They weren't world beaters but it's not easy when you're blocking the exact same run play 25 times per game and the defense knows where the ball is going.

  11. So I was having some PTSD over the latest round of coaching changes and decided to revisit the situation surrounding Mack Brown leaving the program and the options at that point to come in to Texas. Some still feel that Saban was close to coming this way, I have no inside information to suggest that he wasn't, but I always considered him a long shot. Bill O’Brien was mentioned as well, but he's NFL through and through. So past Saban and O'Brien who was out there that we "missed" on. It seems most of the options listed that year were out and out misses if you look at what they have done sense. Who knows how things play out if they do join Texas football, but purely based on their performance since, there was only one name that has panned out 6 years down the road. Misses James Franklin - The guys has done a fantastic job building PSU up from where Bill O'Brien left off. He hasn't taken the next step yet, but many believe he is a season or so away from competing with the juggernaut that is Ohio State. He has a cloud around him of being a bit slimey to most I talk to who follow the Big 10 closely, but certainly has built a winner from a rather depressing situation. He might not be able to do the political part surrounding the Texas job, but I'm not sure he would do it any worse than Strong or Herman. Guz Mahlzahn - I had a hard time putting him here, I almost want to put him in Under Performed, but I think he's done well enough for Auburn. In the Big 12, he could've put together something a bit more dominate as he wouldn't be playing Alabama and LSU every year. Under Performed Jimbo Fisher - I put him here only because he still has winning seasons (against FCS football competition) but he is still employed. At no point did I want this clown either and I bet in a couple of years he will be in the dodged category. Mark Dantonio - Quite a few wanted this dinosaur, he obviously peaked around the time this search was going on. MSU never was a year in and out powerhouse and so his success since 2013 is about right to keep his current job, but certainly not be the coach of Texas. Mike Gundy - He's perfect where he is at and was never coming out way, nor should he. Pat Fitzgerald - This guy is probably a good coach, but no where near good enough for Texas. Northwestern has been pretty quiet since 2013. Gary Patterson - He's never going to do better than what he is doing at TCU which is maintaining. Dodged Gary Andersen - I think he's back at Utah State? Chad Morris - Appears this guys is a good OC, maybe. Larry Fedora - He's now on our staff as an analyst... Al Golden - Not sure if he was ever a serious candidate, but I couldn't tell you what he is doing without google and I don't plan on looking it up. Rich Rodriguez - haha Art Briles - Nope Who else you got?

  15. yeah, the full text of that is actually somewhat shocking, even from trump. it's very personal. "i think he's a maniac. i think adam schiff is a deranged human being. i think he grew up with a complex for lots of reasons that are obvious. i think he's a very sick man, and he lies. adam schiff made up my conversation with the president of ukraine. and one of the reasons people keep talking about it is because that's what they saw. we have a perfectly beautiful 3-4 page transcription, then in the other case a 2 page transcription of the conversation. but a lot of people didn't read that. how many people call you? a friend of mine called up, a top person in new york called up, great friend of mine, very successful: 'gee, i didn't like what was said,' i said, oh where did you see it, did you read it? 'no i didn't read it, i heard adam schiff give it." i said, well that's not what was said. and i sent him a copy of what was said, and he said 'this is like, this is great, this isn't what he said.' this guy is sick! he made up the conversation, he lied. if he didn't do that in the halls of congress, he'd be thrown in a jail. but he did it in the halls of congress, and he's given immunity. this is a sick person; he's a liar. and by the way, nancy pelosi knew he was lying, and she went on her show, stephanapolous, and she said he told the truth, so she was lying too. these people are deranged." it's actually amazing in its full context. in a soliloquy about lying, trump lies, makes up a conversation to illustrate what he is calling a made up conversation. he's given immunity from indictment because he's in the white house, and he says schiff is immune from going to jail because he was in the halls of congress. it mean, it's really a boiled down, distilled version of the entire trump presidency. it's incredible.

  16. Now that trump has completely taken it over, the Republican Party is basically an arm of the Russian government seeking to undermine the US and it’s allies and benefit Russia. The sheep are too dumb to see it but it’s obvious and sitting right there in plain sight. Compromised senators, an entire executive branch corrupted, and a compliant house where no one can afford to stand up against it without being expelled. The Republican Party has truly become an entity that is an enemy of the United States.

  17. Means testing ANY social program opens up the ability for opponents to manipulate the program and impose undue red tape and expenses. And starting from the middle is a terrible negotiation tactic. You’re never going to win over Republicans no matter how moderate you begin. It’s weak and self defeating. Quit starting every drive with an onside kick - you might get lucky 10% of the time; you’re just handing away half the field the other 90%.

  18. His first class had a whopping 4 “productive” defensive players that finished out at least 3 years at Texas. Poona Ford was a gem, Chris Nelson was okay, and Jason Hall and John Bonney mattered in that they had mass and took up space on a football field for a while. The rest of the defensive guys in this class were outright busts, including Roberson and Freeman at the top. That’s 2014. His 2015 defensive class was highly productive from a “games started” perspective but also highlights the tenuous nature of just valuing signings because they appeared regularly on the field. Malik Jefferson played well and meant a lot to the program but never matched the hype. Hilton Hill and Kris Boyd certainly didn’t reach their potential but we would have murdered someone to have either guy this year. The same is true for Devante Davis. Charles Omenihu is actually an example of positive development into an NFL quality player. Deshon Elliott left too early. PJ Locke stayed too long. Anthony Wheeler and Breckyn Hager certainly put up a lot of starts and, well, that’s just not a good thing. Cameron Townsend and Quincy Vasser never amounted to anything more than names on a roster. I hope they graduated and are making something of themselves in the business world. Finally, there’s Cecil Cherry. LOL. 2016 is cringeworthy. That cake is unleavened and unsweetened, which makes it perfect for Tom Herman to serve up the fan base at breakfast, so thanks Chuckles. Brandon Jones was the 5 star in this class that we didn’t develop. Chris Brown, Malcolm Roach and Jeffrey McCullough have all contributed and had moments of terrific play and then moments of pure boobery. Roach specifically has had more critical penalties as an ostensible SR leader than any player since Robert Killebrew. Erick Fowler was a 5 star flameout of epic proportions. The great DL haul never materialized into a meaningful start across the entire spectrum of the 6 guys we signed - Jordan Elliott wound being productive for Brick Haley at Mizzou, and then Andrew Fitzgerald (right), Christmas-Giles (fuck), Wilbon (meh), Chris Daniels (bleh), and Marcel Southall (wet fart noise) give Texas the oooooollll’6er. A 6 pack of nothing but empty calories and shame. Eric Cuffee couldn’t beat out Boyce, if that tells you anything. Donovan Duvernay negatively recruited visitors during Herman’s first season and otherwise has served the purpose of being Devin Duvernay’s brother. Demarco Boyd did the same thing for us with Kris Boyd before proving himself a piece of shit by beating some kid into a body cast because he had the temerity to get into a fender bender accident with UT football players. So 4 okay to decent contributors out of 14 signed. All in all, this class’s lack of development and attrition has played a significant role in the depth chart being a mess on the D side.

  19. Word early in fall camp was that he was coming along and had a chance to meet his potential. Of course, sourcing info from people involved with this staff is tough because they really do believe their players are just better than everyone else’s, without understanding that that therefore indicts their coaching when the team loses to ISU, Baylor and TCU. Anyway, dude thought he should be starting and complained loudly about it. Then he got into a lockerroom fight and threatened a coach, allegedly. So of course he might decide to stick around. He’s like the living embodiment of the Herman tenure. Stressed excitement, then disappointment, then high hopes, then get the fuck out of here shitbag, and now confusion.

  30. Anything unique about his defense, 3 or 4 DLine, blitz vs zone, can they tackle? The most interesting thing about him is that he’s pretty much the anti-Orlando. Uses a 4 man front. Doesn’t blitz a whole lot. Bases out of quarters with limited play calls out of that, so it’s simple for his defense. He does like to utilize press coverage (like actual press where the DBs get their hands on the WRs, not like how Orlando would walk the DBs up to the line but still give a free release). He sometimes mixes up his quarters coverage with press man cover 1 and use the extra man to blitz. Overall, his defense is fairly simple and he focuses a lot on technique, tackling, and natural talent. So again, the anti-Orlando. A coupe potential problems. 1) he needs good pass rush from his DL and we don’t have that right now. If he can’t get to the Qb with 4 then his D will struggle. He had JJ Watt at UW and Bosa and others at tOSU so the places where he’s succeeded had significantly more DL talent. 2) because of how simple he plays, someone like Lincoln or Gundy will know exactly what they’re facing and can out-scheme/out-call him. 3) He asks a lot of his LBs and the safety who is responsible for backside run contain (varies which safety by offensive formation). They have to read and react for both pass and run so PAs and RPOs can eat his defenses up if those players struggle. I do think Ash could get our secondary playing at a much higher level from a technique standpoint. A downside is people at Rutgers hated him and he’s more of Herman from a personality standpoint, which might be problematic for the locker room/morale. The difference between Ash and Watson is that Watson fucking sucked everywhere he went and was a doomed hire from the start. Ash has had success as a DC at a lot of his stops. It’s just that his success doesn’t translate all that cleanly to here, but he wouldn’t be a definite failure like Watson He was co-DC at tOSU for two years, not one. He had a ton of success at UW and tOSU, but I agree there are questions about how well that will translate since he was playing caveman offenses that couldn’t take advantage of the simplicity of his defense. The other problem is Ash requires a lot of talent because he needs his 4 man DL to get pressure, he requires a lot mentally from his LBs, and he leaves his secondary in a ton of man or pattern matching situations without help over the top. tOSU had all that and then some. JJ Watt was a game changer for UW. At Texas, he doesn’t have a force like Bosa or Watt and who knows what we have at LB for him. It’s unclear if he could figure out how to make up for not having what he needs at each level of the defense. Overall, I don’t think Ash would be a definite failure, like Watson or Beck were known to be before they even got here, but there are definitely better candidates out there that Herman needs to identify and pursue first. My biggest issue with hiring Ash isn’t so much Ash himself, but rather what it would say about Herman going for another hire within his circle of knowledge instead of finding the best guy for the job in the entire country.

  31. I have to disagree on the Ehlinger part. He looked absolutely terrific against LSU on crossing routes and over the middle throws. Watch the highlights of that game to remember some of the throws he made that night. Without a deep dive into all-22 angles that I don't have, it seemed like the failure to go over the middle later in the season was based on play design more than Ehlinger. I only watched the Tech game live and while Ehlinger certainly has some limitations with field vision, we simply didn't have many guys running routes that attacked that part of the field.
