Jimbo 2021: Meemaw's Got a Brand New Bag

He has a long list of guys who were undervalued at the time they committed to him at LSU and Florida State and the number is much higher than you'd expect. He's already got a couple of those guys on the roster in Aggieland, most notably promising second-year men like Ainias Smith and Andre White.

Andre White was a 4-star recruit: https://247sports.com/Player/Andre-White-Jr-46046575/high-school-207070/

Garza's addition also gives the Aggies a presence at the powerhouse Katy program (starting kicker Seth Small is also a KHS product). This fall, the Tiger defense will feature three national top-100 caliber defenders in CB Bobby Taylor, LB Ty Kana and DE Malick Sylia so signing Fernando could eventually pay dividends for the Aggie offense, Rob Childress and A&M's '22 efforts. Speaking of, it is interesting to note that in addition to the Garza/Katy potential and the Ags having a pretty big 'in' at Dickinson with Wydermyer (Green and nationally-recruited OL Patrick Williams), A&M will have former Atascocita star Kenyon Green working perhaps the state's top prospect in former OL teammate Kam Dewberry and there's also the connection between current commit Shadrach Banks of North Shore and one of the nation's top junior cornerbacks in Mustang teammate Denver Harris. Long story short, when you're landing guys from the best programs in the Lone Star State (like Fernando Garza) it tends to help open doors.

And they strung out Ainias smith until the last minute, trying to land guys they thought were better. They settled for him, that wasn’t some grand evaluation.

They did the same thing with Achane, too. Once it became apparent they were whiffing on every single RB they offered, they took his commitment.

Is that the guy that was recruited as a CB by pretty much every school that offered him, but because aggy has a backup all district QB at RB, they moved him to RB instead?

I can see Jimbo putting him in any of the RB positions that include 1 or 2 TEs and a halfback or even a 4-wide and then getting Mond to lob a screen pass to a streaking fast RB that is small and fast and elusive behind the OL Cubes. He managed to get pretty good production from these types of plays from small and fast RBs like Trayveon Williams.

To be fair, Trey Zuhn grew up in Texas and his dad played for the Ags.  In that regard, it's a favorable show compared to losing Landon Jackson to LSU.

"Zuhn lived near Texas A&M as a child before the family moved to Fort Collins and his dad played for the Aggies.

No shit, I'd put Achane anywhere on the field that I could get him the ball.  He has ridiculous speed.  Make him a Percy Harvin role.

I think one of my favorite Aggy message board tropes is Aggy getting a commitment from some random 3 or 4 star and then making statements like “now that we have this guy, if we just add Burris, Jackson, Adeleye, and [insert 5 star they have zero chance with], we will have a pretty good haul”

Really? You sure about that Columbo?

Momentum

Spoiler

Staff

- Both Looch and I have heard from various sources today that the Aggie coaching staff has been busy with virtual visits throughout the afternoon and evening. So far, we've been able to track down info that indicates the following kids were a part of today's activities:

Canonsburg (PA) S Donovan McMillon
St James (LA) DE Saivion Jones
Miami (FL) S Kamren Kinchens
Oradell (NJ) DT Tywone Malone

I was also told that the visit with Donovan McMillon went extremely well. I've reached out to him for comment. I'll report back once he gets back to me.

- Another thing to note: this recent run of momentum isn't by happenstance. The A&M coaching and recruiting staff have been getting after it in the last 7-10 days, and we expect that to continue throughout the remainder of the summer. I think we'll see some more innovative ideas as the staff keeps on finding ways to be creative amidst all the cancellations.

- I watched 2022 Bridgeland QB Conner Weigman work out on the baseball field today down in Katy. Weigman's profile on the football field continues to explode, and I was told today that he's a take on the baseball field for just about every team in the SEC West, including A&M. However, football will drive his decision. If you haven't done so yet, I encourage you to watch his sophomore tape. In the last month, he's been offered by Michigan State, Arkansas, Baylor, SMU, and Houston. He's also squarely on the radar of Darrell Dickey and Jimbo Fisher.

Here's a quick video of him taking ground balls today, as well.

- 2022 Manvel LB and Aggie legacy Justin Medlock continues to rake in big time offers. In the last two days, the rangy, tackling machine for the Mavs has seen Ohio State, LSU, and Oregon come calling. His father, Jason Medlock, played football for A&M.

Aggie 247 / Brian Perroni / Looking at A&M's safety board: Who will the Aggies land?

Spoiler

Looking at A&M's safety board: Who will the Aggies land?

Brian Perroni

Texas A&M is looking for one or two safeties in the class of 2021. Like with the previous classes, the Aggies are going to be very selective in who they decide to truly pursue heavily.

Right now, there are really four or five names that are targets with two or three of those a bit out front.

-Tallahassee (Fla.) John Paul II S Terrion Arnold

A&M is incredibly high on Arnold, who was recently ranked as the No. 2 safety in the country by 247Sports. He has the offer list to match with over 40 schools having extended them.

Arnold was supposed to visit Aggieland for the spring game last month and not being able to have visitors at that point was a big blow, especially since he still says he wants to commit before the season. A&M would need to get him to camp in August, should camps even be allowed then and A&M deciding to hold them.

Though he does not have any public favorites, in-state foes Florida and Florida State are in good shape as is Alabama. Arnold has known Jimbo Fisher for a long time and the A&M head coach is personally involved in the recruitment. But, the Aggies really need to get him on campus at some point.

-Beggs (Okla.) S Kendal Daniels

Though some schools have mentioned a hybrid position to Daniels, A&M likes the 6-foot-4, 190-pound defender a lot as a pure safety.

Like Arnold, Daniels was planning to be at A&M’s spring game. When visits are allowed again, the Tulsa-area prospect should have an easier time getting to Aggieland than Daniels, though.

Daniels is very high on in-state Oklahoma and the Sooners are the team to beat at the moment. But, at least for now, the four-star wants to take all of his official visits before making a decision. A&M and Clemson are two places that seem likely to receive visits.

This one is an uphill battle but there is legitimate interest on Daniels’ part and the Aggies are also very, very high on him.

-Canonsburg (Pa.) Peters Township S Donovan McMillon

Out of this group of four players, the 6-foot-2, 193-pound defender could be the most likely to end up at A&M. Ranked as a four-star prospect by 247Sports, the Pittsburgh-area standout has a number of impressive offers.

However, the question remains as to who will still have room out of those. Many of the schools already have quite a few commitments and can afford to be extremely selective with the final spots.

McMillon is actually currently really open and is not as far along in the process as others when it comes to truly narrowing things down. However, he is in regular contact with A&M and will almost assuredly take an official visit to Aggieland.

-Miami (Fla.) Northwestern S Kamren Kinchens

On Friday, the four-star safety included Texas A&M in his top five. He has never been to Aggieland but has some good friends who have and have talked it up to him.

Right now, Auburn is probably the team to beat for the athletic defensive back. But, if A&M is able to land Miami Central running back Amari Daniels and makes a push for Kinchens’ teammate, four-star wide receiver Romello Brinson, it will help the Aggies’ chances with Kinchens as well.

As of now, the South Florida defender wants to take his official visits before making a decision. With him having never been to Aggieland, it is very important for A&M to get him on campus should they decide to truly make a hard push.

-Oakdale (Conn.) St. Thomas More Prep S Marques Buford

Buford was a member of the 2020 class at Cedar Hill Trinity Christian but is headed to prep school in Connecticut for this coming season. The 6-foot, 190-pound athlete has added a number of offers as of late, including ones from A&M, Iowa State and Pitt this past Thursday.

Buford is originally from Chicago but spent the past two seasons in the Metroplex. He is open to playing just about anywhere at the next level, regardless of location.

Buford plays on both sides of the ball but projects to safety at the next level. We are supposed to catch up with him soon to see where things stand.

-Frisco Centennial S Caleb Ellis

Ellis is a bit of a wildcard in this and the only player in this group who does not have an A&M offer at this point.

The 6-foot, 180-pound three-star defender has seen some big interest as of late. He was offered by Stanford on Saturday and picked up offers from Arkansas and Northwestern in the past two weeks.

Now, he has been in communication with the Aggies as well. Ellis is a guy that normally A&M would love to get on campus for summer camp, but there might not be that luxury this year. The Aggies are looking closely at him and he knows there is interest from the Maroon and White.

If Ellis is offered, it would not be an automatic that he would commit, but it would definitely put the Aggies up there at or near the top.

Is that a list without a single player from Texas? Jesus. The last kid...if he’s a Texan but offers from Northwestern and Stanford, he’s basically just one of a handful of kids from Texas that would literally wipe his ass with their offer because he gives a fuck about school. Hilarious. This is a wonderful big board.

The good news is that part of the country is culturally similar to College Station, TX, so there will be no hiccups in the process of those kids having to acclimate to Bumfuck, TX.

Aggie 247 / Brian Perroni / Some in-state players made decisions today

Spoiler

Some in-state players made decisions today

Brian Perroni

247 as whole is a bit higher on Cedar Hill QB Kaidon Salter than I am, but I do still like him a lot. I'd have him in that second group right behind the likes of Eli Stowers, Preston Stone, Dematrius Davis, Jalen Milroe and Garrett Nussmeier. He'd be in the same tier as Sawyer Robertson. Salter continued Tennessee's hot streak and was one of two 4-star commits for the Volss today.

I personally would have Duncanville WR Roderick Daniels as a 4-star. If you saw Duncanville in the playoffs, he did everything for them. He played both slot and outside while also getting the ball in wildcat and on jet sweeps. He committed to Baylor today over SMU and he could have a field day in the Big 12.

Another player I have as a personal four-star is Arlington Martin LB Morice Blackwell. He seemed like a Baylor lean but made a surprising commitment to Texas this morning. He was the overall MVP in a very tough district, which doesn't really happen with defenders. He's a bit undersized but can add some weight and still maintain his athleticism. I think he has a chance to be really, really good. Blackwell was ranked as a 5.5 by Rivals but it looks like they recently changed that to a 5.7. I updated it on the back end. He's always been an 88 by 247 so I just wanted to stop the conspiracy theories before they start because his composite is going to go up. It is only because of the bump from Rivals, whenever that came.

SMU also got a commitment from Mineola LB Trevion Sneed. He wasn't an SEC-caliber guy but looked good at A&M's camp last summer. SMU is putting together a really good class. They have 4-star QB Preston Stone and could land OT Savion Byrd as well. They beat out a bunch of P5 programs for Skyline S Isaiah Nwokobia. Same with Dallas Kimball RB Brandon Epton Jr.

In the first two full classes that Jimbo Fisher has been in charge of at Texas A&M, the Aggies finished with their highest point totals in the modern recruiting rankings history.

The Maroon and White are looking to put together a dominant class once again in 2021.

Things have gone a little more slowly in this one, though, as the Aggies do not want to fill up too quickly. Also, not having spring visits allowed has hampered them as that has been a big part of their strategy under Fisher.

Things have begun to pick up, though. A&M was sitting on three commitments since early February but have added four more in the past week and a half. Still, the Aggies are behind their peers a bit in terms of total numbers.

There is another factor as well. Look for the Aggies to sign a full class again this year, but a pair of those spots are already accounted for. Junior college running back Earnest Crownover is a blueshirt, meaning even though he will arrive in College Station and play this coming fall, he counts toward the 2021 numbers. Linebacker Kenneth Phillips III was a longtime commitment in the 2020 class but a season-ending injury is delaying his enrollment at A&M by a semester. He will sign in December now and arrive in January.

As for the other 23 spots, here is the second iteration of my predictions. This will almost assuredly not be the final class but these are the best bets at each position at the moment. The numbers for some of the positions could change, too, which would affect how many spots are available elsewhere.

QUARTERBACK

Denton Guyer QB Eli Stowers

Texas A&M has its quarterback commit in Stowers. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound dual-threat prospect committed to the Aggies last summer, not long after camping at A&M.

Injured in the state title game, the four-star prospect will be back for district play as a senior in 2020. He is then set to graduate early and enroll in January.

Though A&M will remain in contact with Dematrius Davis from North Shore, Stowers will likely be the only quarterback in the class.

RUNNING BACK

Houston Cy-Fair RB LJ Johnson

Johnson is high on A&M, Georgia, LSU and Texas. Georgia has a commitment already, though, and LSU has become the favorite to land four-star Corey Kiner out of Ohio.

Texas is not out of it by any means, and neither are the other two, but A&M has made the national top-100 prospect a priority and is in good shape. Johnson plans to take his time to decide. He does not have a set timetable but is not ready to make a decision yet.

Miami (Fla.) Central APB Amari Daniels

Landing both Johnson and Daniels would be a home run for A&M. The four-star prospect from South Florida is dangerous in both the running and passing game.

There is a lot of talk in Miami that A&M is the heavy favorite for the standout from the powerhouse program. Daniels does not have an exact timeline either, but a commitment in the relative near future would not be too much of a surprise.

WIDE RECEIVER

Houston North Shore WR Shadrach Banks

A&M has a drought at the talent-laden program as the last time the Aggies inked a player from North Shore was the class of 2000. However, national top-100 wide receiver Banks grew up an A&M fan and make an early commitment to the Aggies last summer.

The All-American Bowl wideout suffered a pair of injuries as a junior but will be back ready to go by the time his senior season begins.

Miami Northwestern WR Romello Brinson

This second receiver spot could go to a number of players. Wide receivers coach Dameyune Craig is in an enviable position that he can be very selective with a number of possible options.

Brinson is a four-star prospect that spent the weekend in Aggieland in early February and came away raving about A&M. The Aggies are his top team and, if Craig and Co. decide he is the one they want, the 6-foot-2, 180-pound junior could end up on the commitment list.

TIGHT END

Katy TE Fernando Garza

The 6-foot-5, 244-pound Garza may not have caught a ton of passes as a junior but the Aggies really like him a lot, especially after seeing camp film of him. They made him their main target after a recent offer and he committed less than a week later.

Garza is the only pure tight end that will end up signing with A&M and should be a bigger part of the Katy passing game as a senior this coming season.

Grandview TE/DE Dametrious Crownover

A&M is recruiting the 6-foot-6, 235-pound four-star prospect as an athlete. Crownover has played both tight end and defensive end the past two seasons in helping the Zebras to back-to-back titles. The Aggies want to sign him and figure out the exact position late.

Crownover is not guaranteed to commit to A&M but the Aggies have a lot in their favor, and that was even before his older brother Earnest committed out of the junior college ranks. Nebraska could be the team to give the Aggies a run for their money.

OFFENSIVE LINE

Bryce Foster(Photo: Brian Perroni, 247Sports)

Fort Collins (Colo.) Fossil Ridge OT Trey Zuhn

When four-star Zuhn came to A&M for the Super Bowl party in early February, he had made his mind to commit to the Aggies over Ohio State and Oklahoma. The 6-foot-6, 300-pound junior was born in College Station and has grandparents still there.

After being offered at summer camp in 2019, it was going to be hard for any other team to beat out A&M for Zuhn’s services. He was the first piece of an offensive line class that should be very good.

Richmond Foster OT Reuben Fatheree

Also a standout basketball player who wants to play both sports in college, four-star Fatheree has all the makings of an elite left tackle at the next level. The 6-foot-7, 310-pounder has excellent feet and a great frame.

LSU, Oklahoma and Baylor are the main other contenders for his services and the Tigers could be the sneaky team to watch. However, Fatheree has a good relationship with both the football and basketball staff in Aggieland. I still like my Crystal Ball pick for A&M on him.

Katy Taylor OG Bryce Foster

The 6-foot-4.5, 330-pound Foster, who will also throw for the track and field team at his school of choice, has been a longtime Aggie target for the interior of the line. Nicknamed ‘Mountain,’ Foster is an absolute mauler.

Foster comes from an Aggie family with his mom having gone to A&M and his brother having been a walkon for the Aggies. However, at the moment, Oklahoma is in very good shape. A&M will have a long time to counter that, though, as Foster has been adamant about taking all his visits before making a commitment. There are a lot of ties pulling him to A&M and, right now, I think those ties have a good chance of winning out.

Butler (Kan.) C.C. OT Javonne Shepherd

A&M almost landed Shepherd as a four-star prospect out of Houston North Forest in the class of 2019 before he signed with Texas. The Aggies again almost landed him when he decided to transfer from Texas after the fall semester. However, he had to go the junior college route.

Set to likely graduate in December and then have three years of eligibility remaining, as long as Shepherd has a strong year for Butler, he will again be a top A&M target. Shepherd has long felt comfortable in Aggieland and there’s a good chance he ends up there when the dust settles.

DEFENSIVE TACKLE

9753522.jpg?fit=bounds&crop=620:320,offset-y0.50&width=620&height=320(Photo: @victoryvaka)

Westlake Village (Calif.) Westlake DT Victory Vaka

Last week, Texas A&M landed a commitment from big four-star Southern California nose Vaka. The 6-foot-2, 345-pound defender knows he needs to shed some weight and, when he does so, has a chance to be a very disruptive interior defender.

Vaka has never actually been to A&M but has an official visit planned for the fall. However, despite his pledge, he also plans to take his other officials as well. It’s likely he sticks with his commitment, though.

Philadelphia (Pa.) Imhotep DT Taleeq Robbins

Philadelphia is the recruiting territory of defensive tackles coach Elijah Robinson and Robinson has found a player he likes for his own position in Robbins. The 6-foot-3, 300-pounder seems very likely to play in the SEC, though Arizona State should not be counted out.

A&M is in good shape, though. Ole Miss had been the Aggies’ primary competition until Georgia offered last week. Though the Bulldogs are late to the party, they could make things interesting. But still, I like where A&M stands and I like my Crystal Ball pick for the Aggies.

Oradell (N.J.) Bergen Catholic DT Tywone Malone

Malone is yet another tackle in Robinson’s recruiting region and the 6-foot-3.5, 300-pounder has been to Aggieland before, making visit during the season this past year.

Ranked as the No. 56 overall player in the country, it is going to be a dogfight to land Malone. Ohio State is a major player but the Buckeyes already have 17 commitments and Malone does not want to be pushed into making a decision before he’s ready. This one is going to be very tough to win, but the Aggies are going to pull out all the stops.

DEFENSIVE END

Brooklyn (N.Y.) Erasmus Hall WDE Jahzion Harris

For the second year in a row, Texas A&M has taken a commitment from an edge rusher that can line up at a number of spots. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Harris committed to the Aggies a little less than two weeks ago.

Harris’ specialty is rushing the passer and he will get that opportunity to do so in Aggieland. However, his exact position is still up in the air a bit and could be determined on how 2020 signee Donell Harris does in the defense this coming season as the two are similar players.

Texarkana Pleasant Grove SDE Marcus Burris

Texas A&M missed out on one half of the Pleasant Grove duo but the Aggies are still after four-star Burris very hard. The 6-foot-4, 265-pound defender had a strong camp at A&M last summer and followed it up with a big junior season.

Texas is still making a big push and things could get interesting if LSU does the same, as Burris’ teammate Landon Jackson recently committed to the Tigers. But, right now, things look good for A&M.

Fort Washington (Md.) National Christian Academy SDE Monkell Goodwine

Another big defensive end at 6-foot-4, 260 pounds, the four-star Goodwine made an unofficial visit to Aggieland in the fall and came away raving about it. He also has a good friend already enrolled in former teammate Joshuah Moten.

Goodwine has offers from all over the country but the Aggies have as good a chance with him as anybody else. He has a solid relationship with both Price and Robinson and has Moten in his ear as well. At the moment, the defender does not have a decision timeline.

LINEBACKER

9445780.jpg?fit=bounds&crop=620:320,offset-y0.50&width=620&height=320(Photo: 247Sports)

Cornelius (N.C.) Hough OLB Kaci Seegars

It came as a bit of a surprise when Seegars committed to A&M about two weeks ago. The Aggies were his first Power 5 offers but new linebacker coach Tyler Santucci was familiar with him after spending last season at Wake Forest.

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound defender is definitely a playmaker and could potentially play any of the linebacker spots. There’s also a chance he is the only true linebacker in the class, especially with Phillips coming in next season as well.

Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha ILB Greg Penn III

If A&M decides to go after another linebacker, four-star Penn would be a good candidate for the spot. The 6-foot-1, 225-pounder is a true MIKE, which is something the Aggies are lacking a bit on the roster.

Penn has A&M in his final six and plans to officially visit Aggieland once visits are allowed again. He is high on both Maryland and South Carolina but, should A&M push hard, the Maroon and White could end up landing him.

CORNERBACK

Denton Guyer CB Deuce Harmon

Texas has made things a bit interesting with four-star cornerback Harmon, joining Notre Dame as a threat to the Aggies. However, A&M has been on him a long time and has his good friend and teammate committed in Stowers.

A speedy and physical cornerback, Harmon has all 11 of his Crystal Ball predictions in favor of the Aggies. He plans to commit whenever he feels he has made his decision, so there is no set timeline.

Philadelphia (Pa.) Northeast CB Tyreek Chappell

Also a standout wide receiver, the speedy Chappell has become a big-time target at corner for the Aggies as of late. Other schools are starting to notice his playmaking abilities as well.

The 5-foot-11, 177-pound junior has named a top five but A&M and Tennessee are the two schools standing out the most to him. He has a commitment date set for July 4 and I really like my A&M Crystal Ball there.

Virginia Beach (Va.) Princess Anne CB Tony Grimes

This is a spot the Aggies will save no matter what as the five-star cornerback could be the top overall prospect on the board, regardless of position. Grimes has shown a ton of interest in A&M as well, spending close to a week in College Station each of the past two summers.

It is going to be really tough to land Grimes, especially with Maurice Linguist having left for the NFL as the two were very close, but he plans to make it to Aggieland a couple more times before his decision date of Dec. 1. Right now, Georgia is in good shape but A&M can do its best to counter that by reminding him why he has liked Aggieland so much each time he has visited.

SAFETY

Canonsburg (Pa.) Peter’s Township S Donovan McMillon

A&M only took one safety in the class of 2020 and that could be the case again in 2021. If it is, McMillon seems like the best bet.

The 6-foot-2, 193-pound defender, ranked as a four-star by 247Sports, is still very open in his recruitment. He wants to take a bunch of visits once they are allowed again, including to A&M. He has also been in regular contact with the Aggie staff. If A&M pushes hard, they are in a good place there.
