She's 11.5 in human years. We got her when she was 11 weeks old from the Humane Society shelter on Townlake. My wife (soon to be ex) and I would walk around the lake and stop in at the shelter to check on the dogs. We originally were looking for a chocolate lab. One day while we were there one of the volunteers told us that the black dogs were rarely adopted and consequently put down the most. We were like, "people are racist against dogs?" so we determined that we'd be adopting a black lab. One day we're on our usual weekend jaunt and stroll through the shelter. Every dog in the place was absolutely losing their shit. Barking, howling, jumping - generally being crazy. Except one. This little 8 week old black lab puppy. She was fast asleep in her pen. We opened the gate, went inside, and sat down. The puppy woke up, walked over to my wife, licked her hand and promptly went back to sleep in her lap. We looked at each other and just knew. We found our dog. We had to wait a couple of weeks to take her home in case her original family came to claim her. No one ever did. We couldn't figure out how somebody could lose a beautiful black lab puppy and not try and find her. Whatever, their loss. We named her Olive. She was, and continues to be the best dog I have ever known. She loves everybody and everybody that has ever met her wants to take her home and keep her. She's perfect. She's happiest being off-leash accompanying me playing disc golf. She's never chased a disc and is always within 30 feet of me happily sniffing and snuffling everything. She doesn't have much time left now, so she'll be eating steak for her remaining days. We're making a bucket list of her favorite things and will be taking her to her favorite places. I'm going to miss her deeply. Thankful that I got to enjoy her for the past 11 years but sad that our adventures together are ending. Goodbye Olive. I love you. You're a good girl.11 points

Fuck aggy. They have long claimed to be the wealthiest public university in the nation with an endowment more than three times that of UT Austin. Rick Perry dreamed up the "brilliant" plan to swell their enrollment and rained hell upon Bill Powers for resisting the stupidity of that idea. Let aggy rot.9 points

Wow - no surprise -- not a single person is caught on tape saying "Let's conspire to defraud the American public in the upcoming election" or "Hey - Treason? Sure - sounds great." There was never going to be a smoking gun. Obviously. In general, the legislature is spineless. They can't even pass a bill requesting the President allow the special counsel finish his investigation - so sure let's trust their most recent non-collusion conclusions. Putting aside the R-run Senate v. the D-run House, both are spineless. I guess I don't understand what more an American would need to see on this one? I mean the President has admitted to obstruction. He's done shit no President has ever done before in terms of walking into meetings with Putin/Russians without others. There are multiple references to setting up back-channel communications between the Russians and the campaign outside the realm of the US intelligence community. He actively on national TV asked for assistance to hack Hillary's emails. Throw in just about every person interviewed lying about: their meetings with Russians during the campaign, communications with Russians. The emails in the public domain about the Trump tower meeting with Don Jr. Throw in Trump and Cohen lying about how long the Trump tower discussions were ongoing about Trump Tower Moscow. Throw in the NRA/Butina side-show. Compare that to past foreign election interference in other countries by the Russians. Then see Trump's actions with NATO or long-term allies by comparison to Russia, his impact on Magnitsky Act sanctions against Russians, his pulling out of the battle against ISIS. I get that none of this matters or it all can be explained away because HIllary is the Devil, tax cuts, abortion is murder, anti-socialism.9 points

Offseason doldrums are in full swing and my hands are shaking from withdrawal. For those like me who need a fix, here's a little taste of actual football discussion. ------------------ Texas is building an Offensive Line that emphasizes mobility and brains over pure size and strength. The concept is to optimize for zone blocking and engaging defenders in space. The 2018 OL was undersized by FBS standards: 300, 325, 305, 305, 295 across the front from the official roster. In reality Sam Cosmi was down to 286 by season’s end. You have to keep in mind that the model here is the Mike Shanahan Denver Broncos who were even more undersized compared to their peers. The 1998 Superbowl champs had an OL that went 285 lbs (Texas’ own Dan Neil), 287, 286, 291 and 300. Zone blocking also uses different types of RBs who might not look great on paper but are very productive within the scheme. See the long list of whodat backs who became stars at Denver. https://www.hogshaven.com/2012/5/31/3054498/digging-deeper-mike-shanahans-one-cut-and-go-running-backs With Herman, like Shanahan quickness and agility are required to beat a DL to the spot on a reach or cutoff block, to maintain balance and leverage in outside zone blocking and to engage LBs and DBs in space. Good footwork and proper weight distribution are required to ride a defender in the direction he chooses to move. This blocking style is a lot like Judo – help the guy keep going in the same direction with technique. It’s a sharp contrast to the typical blocking scheme which is more like Sumo Wrestling and the ideal body types are just as different. Basic gap or man blocking runs to a defined gap and tries to block the play accordingly. The OL engage their assigned defender and try to push them away from the hole. They sometimes have an angle advantage when blocking down but they must move the defender in the correct direction to make the play work. One big advantage Is that gap blocking does not usually require the ball carrier to read and pick a hole. QB power and QB counter are the primary examples of gap blocking in Texas' offense. Zone blocking also assigns a defender to block but the requirement is to engage them and push them in whichever direction they choose to go. This allows the OL to create an angle advantage with the flow on most plays. Helping someone to move requires less power than opposing their movement so smaller linemen are acceptable if they can use balance and quickness to gain leverage. The RB must have superior vision because there is no defined hole; he must pick a gap, make one cut and hit it decisively. Shanahan made a living off of backs with that set of abilities that were not highly valued otherwise by the NFL (see Selvin Young). Tom Herman’s OL at Ohio St was not particularly large: 311, 305, 291, 303 and 305 on the 2014 team. His recruiting at Texas shows he will take a few guys over 300 lbs but not if they are carrying a lot of bad weight. For reference, Javonne Shepherd was down to 318 per the NSD press conference. Herman asks his OL to get directional leverage on DL and pick off smaller, quicker defenders on screens and swing passes. They MUST have good feet. This contributed greatly to success on screens, the tunnel screen in particular. One underappreciated advantage of zone blocking is that OL accustomed to executing it in the run game tend to do a better job of executing zone protections on passing plays.8 points

And that is why I hop on the Brisket train some days. I realize we are fucked as a nation because no matter the evidence of conspiracy between his family, campaign, and his own financial dealings with Moscow, nothing will change peoples minds. Maybe if there is a recording of him asking for Russia to hack Clinton's emails, it might matter. Or maybe invite the Russians into the Oval Office the day after firing the FBI director and telling them there is now nothing to worry about, it might matter. Hell, he could even stand before the world in a Nordic country and fellatiate Putin with his lies, cowardice, and acquiescence for his daddy and nothing will matter unless there is a contract written in blood. I have faith though that the investigation is taking so long because the mountain of evidence is necessary. There can not be one mistake in it because the GOP will come at it like a bitch. It will be the hill they die on, and it will work with much of the country. It blows my mind that they can do this with vaccines, climate change, tax cuts for the wealthy causing massive deficits, and Pence not being gay because of his beard, but they are able to do it. The evidence must cover the rubes like a blanket of fucking shame to be ridiculed for history. I believe the country will survive if this can be done. Hell, did anyone ever think you'd hear Republicans admit the Iraq War was bogus? Freedom Fries and Toby Keith say no, but history says yes. USA, USA!8 points

This hits close to home. I started drinking late and really did it as part of work life then it moved into my social life. Over the years, I started drinking in more social situations. About 3 years ago, I switched to heavy drinking which meant let’s do vodka, because I can handle more and won’t be as hungover. My drinking then started earlier in the week then earlier in the day but not really impacting work, I thought. A coworker would make an off comment as a joke but nothing impacted my career progression as most coworkers were also heavy drinkers. Slowly, my drinking led to unintended 3 or 4 day weekends which I played off as being sick. Clearly, I drank those recovery days though. I thought I had a handle on it and was not a problem, because I would take two week breaks or do other moderation. Right after my break though I would go back to my black out drinking. I got to a point that I couldn’t moderate or take breaks. Had a bad few weeks and drank for 10 days straight not remembering almost any of it. Thankfully besides my ego and money for booze nothing was destroyed. I decided after that to admit that I am an alcoholic and wanted to go to AA. I definitely damaged many relationships in this process but hoping this journey is my way back.6 points

Along those same lines, let me tell you my mission on a gray and shitty Monday morning. I got it in my head to acquire all 4 Old Forester Whiskey Row offerings as a gift for my bro-in-law who is a novice Bourbon drinker. Figured it was a good gift. Not too expensive. Lots of yield. Lots of comparison. Hopefully some tasting discussions between him and his buddies. He recently sent me a bottle of Weller 12 from the secondary market for MY birthday. I was extremely grateful and flattered, but kinda felt bad for his effort and expense. Wanted to return the favor with a vengeance. I have many interesting stories of the 9 stops that I made (many things I passed up for myself) but suffice to say: mission accomplished! 9 stops. 4 bottles (all at MSRP), 1hr, 45min total time. Felt like a fuckin rock star. Totally made my day that I nailed them all, just in one day. I just figured that karma (or law of averages, whatever) would have me spending weeks hunting the one missing bottle... Anyway...for what it’s worth...that’s my Bourbon success story this week. My good goddam deed for the day.4 points

1.) The study of the earth's climate is absolutley a science. Interestingly enough the earth has produced verifiable numbers for millenia and continues to do so. You're absolutely right that I can find courses in the top universities on the planet that treat the study of earth's climate as a science. MIT: 12.003 Introduction to Atmosphere, Ocean, and Climate Dynamics Prereq: Calculus II (GIR) and Physics I (GIR) U (Fall) 3-1-8 units. REST Introduces the dynamical processes that govern the atmosphere, oceans, and climate. Topics include Earth's radiation budget, convection and clouds, the circulation of the atmosphere and ocean, and climate change. Illustrates underlying mechanisms through laboratory demonstrations with a rotating table, and through analysis of atmospheric and oceanic data. Stanford: EARTHSYS 103. Understanding Energy. 3-5 Units. Energy is the number one contributor to climate change and has significant consequences for our society, political system, economy, and environment. Energy is also a fundamental driver of human development and opportunity. In taking this course, students will not only understand the fundamentals of each energy resource -- including significance and potential, conversion processes and technologies, drivers and barriers, policy and regulation, and social, economic, and environmental impacts -- students will also be able to put this in the context of the broader energy system. Both depletable and renewable energy resources are covered, including oil, natural gas, coal, nuclear, biomass and biofuel, hydroelectric, wind, solar thermal and photovoltaics (PV), geothermal, and ocean energy, with cross-cutting topics including electricity, storage, climate change and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), sustainability, green buildings, energy efficiency, transportation, and the developing world. The course is 4 units, which includes lecture and in-class discussion, readings and videos, assignments, and two off-site field trips. Field trip offerings differ each fall (see syllabus for updated list), but may include Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant, Shasta dam, Tesla Gigafactory, NextEra wind farm, San Ardo oil field, Geyser¿s geothermal power plants, etc. Students choose two field trips from approximately 8 that are offered. Enroll for 5 units to also attend the Workshop, an interactive discussion section on cross-cutting topics that meets once per week for 80 minutes (timing TBD). The 3-unit option requires instructor approval - please contact Diana Ginnebaugh. Open to all: pre-majors and majors, with any background! The course was formerly called Energy Resources. Harvard: Earth and Planetary Sciences 231. Climate Dynamics The course covers climate dynamics and climate variability phenomena and mechanisms, and provides hands-on experience running and analyzing climate models, as well as using dynamical system theory tools. Among the subjects covered: energy balance and greenhouse effect, El Nino, thermohaline circulation, abrupt climate change, millennial variability (DO and Heinrich events), glacial-interglacial cycles, the ocean carbonate system and CO2 changes, warm past and future climates, and more. Each school has many options on the physics and chemistry of climate change, but maybe you don't trust those liberal schools so let's check a conservative one... BYU: GEOL 108: Climate and the Earth System Chemical, physical, and biological processes shaping the Earth's surface and climate, emphasizing quantitative methods for measuring and evaluating contemporary climate and environmental changes relative to the last several thousand years. 2.) I never said the Earth wasn't going to warm in the next 50 years. The earth on the whole is currently warming as it was predicted to do so. I'm sure you'll find models that did grossly overestimate the pace of change as you'll find models that underestimate.4 points

1. What percent of abortions are third trimester? 2. Are you against abortions when the mother's life is in danger or the fetus is damaged? 3. What do you think "every Dem" would say about third trimester abortions? I'm a Democrat and I am not FOR abortions, but rather for freedom of choice. And I only support third trimester abortions when the mother's life is in danger or the fetus is damaged.4 points

Our society is fucked up because certain people in control of a certain party have been consistently lying and fooling people for going on 40 years now in order to enrich itself and set up barriers to losing its power. Plenty of dems have played along too, of course thanks to money and greed, just not nearly to the extent of the GOP. The middle class has been squeezed because that’s what certain people wanted to happen. I remember a time before there were “red” states and “blue” states and we didn’t identify ourselves as essentially sworn enemies, either “crips” or “bloods.” It wasn’t even all that long ago. Do you think all of that terminology just came along by accident? The rise of Fox News, right wing radio, elimination of the fairness doctrine, Citizens United. All of that just naturally and organically evolved? The Russians are only a part of it. They saw an opportunity with Trump and took full advantage of it. But it was the system set up by the GOP that allowed it to even be possible. The owners of the GOP didn’t want trump, but once the base had made an overwhelming decision to support trump they adapted and manipulated trump just as sure as the Russians did. If Jeb gets elected like the plan contemplated the tax cut scam still gets passed and Gorsuch and Cavanugh are still on the Supreme Court. The only difference is all the bullshit crap we have to deal with since a child is the president. Yes we need to deal with trump and the Russians and get that cancer out. But beyond that, we need to recognize and deal with the fact that the GOP has been utterly corrupt for quite some time now, and probably needs to be completely eliminated with a new party breaking away from it and taking over the new opposition to the dems.4 points
