  1. I think we are too convinced that things and people don't change. We also become married to our predictions. I don't rule out at all that Herman may very well be going through a painful learning process that could lead to change. He'd had only success or at least improvement prior to this season. This season was a stunning step backward. He has to reflect on that. He was forced by performance and maybe CDC to jettison the coaching team he hand picked. That must be difficult and humbling. We read that he changed his attitude in the locker room towards the players as the season continued to unravel. After a miserable first quarter against Tech, something made the team emotionally come together and play hard. I thought they were going to tank, but team leadership and maybe something from Herman brought them back to life. Tech isn't good, but we dominated them after the first quarter like a top ten team is supposed to. I have no investment in declaring Herman worthless. I was among the positive after last season. I think stories of how people hate a coach are generally slanted to fit the success of a coach. Everybody hates Herman, get rid of him. Everybody hates Saban, let's try to hire him. Again, maybe Herman is humbled. Men change. Men improve. Herman wants this job and he wants to succeed. Let's see if he adjusts. Writing him off as he is making these changes seems unfair to me.

  3. If Herman is allowed to hire Chris Ash, we know all we need to know about what's happening here. There's no narcissistic breakthrough or a boss fully forcing the guy into the proper decisions. People can rationalize about Ash all they want, but it would be a terrible fucking hire. He's not beloved by players. He was not solely responsible for anything at Ohio State. He hired one of the worst staffs in the history of CFB at Rutgers and the program failed dramatically on both sides of the ball during his entire tenure. One can argue that the HC stuff doesn't matter, but the counter is that there's not a ton of shit to go on with this guy where he was an independent decision-maker outside of Rutgers. I mean, we know he can get along great with assholes, as he worked happily under Bielema and Meyer, and alongside Herman, I guess. He's been available on the job market for months and no one wants him. This would be a comfort hire for a guy that needs to be pressing himself far outside of the comfort zone. There are a ton of good to great candidates at DC, young and old, and the wallet is open for whomever. Hiring Ash would be both a personal and organizational failure for Herman and the program.

  6. This is a dangerous line of thinking and is not based in reality. The difference is Obama was never a threat to democracy, the right just didn't like his policies. The right jumped into outright conspiracy theories head first, despite the fact they were all debunked. The dotard is ABSOLUTELY without question a threat to democracy, both in his actions, his speech, and his base. The "conspiracy theories" he has been accused of keep being proven correct, over and over and over, not to mention his corruption is just blatantly obvious. Obama and Trump are not the same situation in any way, no matter how badly you want them to be.

  7. A few things: -If Harrell is the OC, and the rumors are legit but don’t take anything for granted until ink is dry, then Traylor could make a return. Herman would be admitting to a mistake in letting him go in the first place, so I’m iffy. There’s a shot. Traylor is a stud recruiter and ST coach, irrespective of which position role he would wind up with, if he were re-hired. -For all of the shit everyone gives Warehime, he’s actually done okay at TE coach and Wiley looks like a stud. He might stay. -Beck and Meekins will be gone after signing day. -Ash isn’t the leading candidate. -Outside of Giles, not sure if anyone is safe on defense if the new DC wants other guys. -Expect better positional balance in the coaching staff. -Money and CDC were involved with this. Anyone thinking otherwise is a fucking moron. Herman wasn’t ready to make changes. -Herman is roundly despised by the academic side and the money. Tech win gave him another season. He has been told unequivocally that they should be competing for a national title next year, that he needs to win the fucking bowl game, and they better damned sure land a top 10 class this year. If he fails at any of those, his ass is fucking gone. Obviously, if he fails at the bowl win and the recruiting class and then goes to the CFP, he’s keeping his job. 10 wins though? Some shit like that? Nope. Dude is fucking despised by too many important people. -Urban Meyer was not going to be approached, fwiw. The guy they had lined up would have been pretty fucking great and it will be interesting to see if he goes anywhere this year or if he’s still available after Herman buttfucks 2020.

  8. My Friends, Let's use this thread to post developments such as who has been contacted, who has answered, and sources regarding who is being considered. Please limit comments to the actual development. Please do not regurgitate opinions about other things. Please refrain from repeating a joke from another thread (can he teach tackling? regarding an OC). Let's keep this lean and move posts here to Coaching 2020 for broader blather. Thank you, RomaVicta Per Recruiting Board Per IT Hide contents Things turned fast on the Morgan Scalley pursuit as he offered a thanks but no thanks. A lot has changed in a year and he no longer needs a stepping stone job in order to be under consideration for head coaching jobs.Bummer. He's beloved by his players and would have been a rainmaker recruiter.Names we've heard since late last night include Jimmy Lake and Barry Odom, but right now things are pointing in Chris Ash's direction. I've heard that removing Todd Orlando as DC was Herman's decision. Orlando being a Herman favorite, along with Drew Mehringer (also terminated), makes more sense if Herman felt he'd be able to hire Ash. In a shocking coincidence, if Ash is hired, the best man across the entire spectrum of football worked with Herman at Ohio State.I'm not sure Texas should be in a hurry to make a defensive coordinator hire but things seem to be moving pretty quickly in Ash's direction. They should definitely gauge all relevant parties to see how this hire would be received. I think Ash would be fine schematically and runs a four-man front but the locker room fit is questionable. As a recruiter he would be able to tell kids he coached Nick Bosa's brother. On offense I still hear Graham Harrell is the top target. I know there's talk of Joe Brady out there but I'm not buying it for a couple of reasons: LSU will just match offers, and I heard UT wanted OC wrapped up pretty quickly. Brady's about to help LSU win a National Championship.Clay Helton's employment may still be undecided at USC. I've heard a range of things, from they're still working on buyout details to the AD and BMD's being on different pages. The AD might be trying to hold on to Helton and Harrell. I don't know the politics of USC but it seems whoever made the call on hiring the new AD might still want Helton.I think Harrell can be had regardless but it would be harder to pull him if Helton is still the head coach at SC.Joe will be adding questions and replies in the op. So if don't have time to read through, just circle back.

  9. You simultaneously tell us to avoid marrying ourselves to generalizations while generalizing the board's behaviors and thinking processes. Everything in this post starts with the premise that the person in consideration, Herman, fits into the spectrum of normal personalities. Everything you wrote is legitimate if that is the case. Well and good. I'm going to spoiler the rest of my post because it is long-winded and some might think it's incredibly boring. But the gist of it presents the argument back that "what if the dude isn't part of the normal personality spectrum?". It's an attempt to shed light on why some of us are instinctively writing him off, and some of us proactively and scientifically writing him off.

  10. Maybe you've read a lot of other shit on here, and something I said triggered you to quote me in this, but I'm pretty got damn sure I've also mentioned Orlando and Beck in my comments as well. This isn't solely about Meh. And I believe it was you who said that CDC and others were involved because Herman was hesitant to make changeS? So basically my point is: if the powers who be, including CDC REALLY had to twist Tom's arms to make changes, because he's that loyal of a guy to the people he's known and worked with in the past, then HOW and WHY in the fuck are they going to let him replace one of those with another of the same? And to bounce off of you, if Herman is the kind to let a piece of shit like Meh rot inside of his own got damn house, why in the fuck are they going to let him hire anyone himself period?

  12. Sun doesn’t shine on the same dog’s ass every decade, I guess. I’ve seen enough crazy shit in CFB that I can’t discount anything. Dabo Swinney was an unknown position coach that took over in mid-season and put together a string of middling seasons. The boosters demanded his exit and the AD held steady. Mike Garrett couldn’t hire the right HC to save his life. He hired Pete Carroll and we fucking laughed. Jim Harbaugh was a sure thing at Michigan. Ed Orgeron was destined to leave the LSU program in smoke and ruin. We all mocked the premise that Joe Burrow and a fucking guy that had never even been a position coach would do anything but create more jokes at LSU. Matt Rhule was a fucking joke of a hire for a Texas school. We all laughed. I doubt this shit works out, but fuck, it is more hope than I’ve felt since 2009.

  15. Urban hired him because he shut down his offense when he was at Wisconsin. Ash's defense held Oregon to 20 points in the championship game despite being -3 in TOs. Frankly I'm not concerned with a guy that schemes to shut down spread offenses. I want a guy that teaches solid fundamentals and tackling, the rest will take care of itself.

  24. It's a horrible idea to impeach Trump this month. There is a zero chance that he's convicted so there's no rush. The House Dems need to force the WH personnel to show up to testify and produce documents. This is more important in the long run than Trump being impeached/convicted. The Dems should use the next 11 months to drag every Trump associate into a public hearing, including Manafort, Cohen, Flynn, Trump Jr. etc. Make Trump Jr. plead the 5th. Impeaching Trump this month, and letting McConnell acquit Trump is exactly what Trump and McConnell want. Why give them what they want?

Petersen's the kind of guy you actually run into at the grocery store (we don't have HEBs, so they're open). No airs at all, just down to earth and a straight shooter. May be a bit too loyal at times but is loved here, and gets along extremely well with the AD and university president. I hope this is not due to health issues with him or his family.

  27. This is missing the forest for the trees. What is the primary reason defenders miss tackles in college football? It's not that they suddenly forgot how - these guys have been playing football all their lives, since they were kids. They don't need a coach to re-teach them the basics of tackling. The reason is that they're out of position. Which is caused by A) an OC that schemes his best guys to get the ball in space and create awkward angles for defenders, and/or B) a DC whose defenders get caught in conflict and can't run downhill to the ball with confidence. Big 12 offenses are masterful at putting defenders in conflict with the constant usage of RPOs, and/or spreading defenders out to get a numbers/leverage advantage in the run game. Guys like Heacock, Phil Snow, and Jimmy Lake have constantly faced these tactics for years and adapted - Heacock specifically designed the inverted Tampa 2 to neutralize RPO tactics while maintaining defensive flexibility, and now it's very commonly used in the Big 12 to very good effect. This is the kind of defensive innovation that comes only from a DC who routinely has to face spread offenses. Iowa State's defense isn't better than ours because their guys are better tacklers, it's because they're being put into position to read and react to plays by a DC who understands how to combat ever-evolving spread attacks. Why do you think we don't see this same level of defensive innovation in the Big Ten? Do you really think Don Brown would be up for the Broyles Award if he was in the Big 12?

  29. DGFs spinal stenosis reexamination is today per his Instagram stories. If you're a praying person, now's the time. Either way, he's proven to be an exceptional kid and an asset to the program. Per IT updates, some ground needs to be made up with Burns considering TO was his recruiter. If DGF is officially out, they'll need to make up that ground quickly. Texas has the added benefit of Ole Miss firing Luke, so Texas may also be the more stable option.

  30. Who gives a shit about Big 12 offenses. No one is going to consistently stop the offenses in this conference. It has been proven throughout the years, so hiring a guy to do that specifically is fucking retarded. Give me a guy that preaches solid defensive principles, fundamentals, and tackling.

  31. Uh, I'm pretty sure that not doing your job but then paying for lunch for your coworkers every once in a while or bringing in breakfast sometimes is classic "mailing it in" behavior. You know you're not actually working so you supply food every so often to stay on everybody's good side. It's a solid strategy. I've seen people make it work in an office environment, but I'm kind of impressed that someone made it work for $40M.

  32. I think anyone thinking that coaches won’t take a job because the HC is a dead man walking is just way off base. Coaches are egotists and they’re always going to think they can do better and they will be invincible. Harrell is a guy that, if he takes the job, will take it because he knows that succeeding at Texas will make his career. He told people that today. If Harrell or Lashlee get the OC job, we will have some great fucking intel on this board. Probably.

  34. CDC won’t have a choice. The aging boomers with the money don’t want to spend the last decade+ of their existence watching fluctuations of 7-6 to 10-4 with a well-paid asshole coach that they can’t or won’t engage and interact with on the reg. Pretty much everyone would get behind an asshole winning the conference regularly and making the playoffs every 1-3 years. It’s up or fucking out and it should be. Also, anyone lamenting BMD issues and the history with Texas, the one thing that’s awesome about Herman and his lieutenants being such mouthbreathing imbeciles is that he’s somehow managed to unite the boosters across UT’s entire network against him. I don’t see a 10-4 season without a conference title and no prayer of the playoffs by November changing that, especially with the prospect of breaking in a new QB to follow the 2020 season.

Aggie is weird (secrant) by Cardboard Boxer: "Not really, its just putting yourself in another person's shoes is beyond the capacity of many of yall.Imagine if your team wasn't so great, and hadn't won a national title in your lifetime. Imagine your team was stuck in a conference so obscure that national football fans regularly confuse you with smaller programs in your state, and if you are lucky you get one ESPN article about your season every three years or so. Imagine no one even hates you because that would mean caring about you at all. Then all of a sudden your team changes conferences, and for about the exact same level of success you always have had suddenly everyone nationally knows who your team is, and fans of programs with actual major success that would have confused your team with Texas Tech ten years ago now can't wait to come to a web forum after a big game to talk down to you.You know how many OU fans were excited to talk down to us after 0-77? None. You know how many fans even in the Big 12 wanted to talk about how we sucked on the field rather than get all into how army or not army our corps is? None.Every day yall hate on us yall validate every decision we have made since conference realignment. That whole move was about becoming relevant and we are now."

  40. Meh. I don't think Morris ever really accomplished as much as a lot of folks around these parts like to think. Most are probably just familiar with the name so assuming he must be good. I know when he was at Clemson, he was considered the hottest OC in the country and I think he was literally the highest paid coordinator in college football at one time. And he had a decent little run there, but Clemson didn't really start winning big until after he left. But I guess it was easy to see why SMU grabbed him (Texas ties, hot name, etc), but again, SMU actually got better after he left. Then his run at Arkansas speaks for itself. Honestly kind of a head-scratcher why Arkansas even hired him in the first place. Pretty sure he was Jerry Jones' hand-picked guy and it was a convenient narrative for everyone involved. But overall, kind of a downward trajectory since Clemson. And supposedly he and Herman have bad history from their Houston/SMU days. Not to mention, Chad's son is a high school quarterback who was headed to Arkansas to play for his dad. He decommitted so one could assume he'd still like to go where his dad is coaching (maybe/maybe not), and Texas hasn't even offered him. For all these reasons, I don't see this happening and I don't want this happening. Plus he's an aggy. Pass.
