Tropheus really knew what he was doing25 points

Hey fuck off you piece of shit. My comment was in the context of if it has been stated by the president, you know it’s serious. But way to go cherry picking half a sentence from a very long and neutral post. You continue to be half a fucking retard in this thread, and trying to make something political when my post was anything but. So feel free to go get fucked by one of your cloakroom buddies, shitbag. edit: to be clear, I negged you for being a cocksucker.16 points

It was dumb if you consider acting selfless dumb. The man sunk his career for the welfare of his sailors, it was the honorable thing to do.14 points

How are you reaching the conclusion that there is such a thing as "too fast?" It'd be one thing if we had a great system of testing, contact tracing, and isolation of infected individuals, then we could totally rely on that to keep the epidemic at bay. But, since we don't have that, shutdown is pretty much our only viable option.13 points

We rationed gas nationwide in the 70s based on odd/even license plate numbers. Its possible to do restrictions like what you suggest. At least it used to be. We are actually at a point in our culture where we are at peak selfishness. Even during the red scare, we were more of a society than we are now. Now we are mostly just a bunch of individual assholes looking out only for number one. A good 70% of Americans don't even understand what the common good is or that it can be beneficial to the individual as well.13 points

What you fail to acknowledge is that there is a contingent, here and out in the real world, who consistently downplay the risk to public health that this virus had (and still has) the potential to kill hundreds of thousands of Americans due to the simple fact that humans have no immunity to it. Whatever their motivations, and I don't pretend to understand them, we still have folks who stubbornly refuse to take the advice of healthcare professionals and threaten to put the rest of America at risk by doing stupid shit like disobeying directives and inviting thousands back into close quarters at megachurches and that cult college in Virginia. As far as predictions, I quite frankly refuse to even hazard a guess the eventual total as it all depends on our collective will to take action and do what is necessary. A simple mathematical model suggesting an exponential increase in cases and resultant deaths is simply a baseline to work from. But, at this point, there are way too many variables to come up with a reasonable figure due to all the variable associated with the uncoordinated responses in this nation. One can reasonably assume, however, that we're likely going to be playing a game of whack-a-mole across the country with this virus until a vaccine is eventually developed, and it is the fucking naysayers who are going to prolong this shit. Don't enable those magical thinking idiots.13 points

Given a choice between doing nothing -- which is what he had the power to do without assistance from the Navy -- and doing what he did, he put the lives of his crew first. They weren't in the middle of taking on fire from an enemy. They were being decimated from within the ship, without the resources from above that they needed. His decision -- made in THE REAL WORLD -- didn't get anyone killed. Instead, it was the only decision that created the opportunity to save lives. Your problem is that you think that anything virtuous is "virtue signaling," and you'd rather we just take our fucking like obedient bitches.12 points

LOL. This reaction is an embarrassment? The entire international community is applauding him for doing what a Captain should for the service men and women under his command. It's a damn shame that Crozier had to take drastic measures to get a response from the higher chain of command. And on another note, his move really doesn't destabilize American security. Even at this moment, no hostile nation dares to try attacking us. We still have the strongest military in the world and if our service men and women can stay healthy, we'll remain the strongest. Thank you for doing the right thing, Captain Crozier.12 points

I hear you, man, and I do my damnedest to push those kind of thoughts out of my head but here's the thing. You think that after all those years of being a really fucking shitty person, karma would've rewarded Trump with becoming the most powerful man on the planet? Unless karma has something really special, and I mean some cruel, demented, twisted and evil shit waiting for him (in this life where we can all see to point and laugh) after all this, I'll refrain from actually believing in it. Besides, in my 48 years of life, I've seen too many good people always try to do the right thing and end up getting screwed in the end. It might just be that god or the universe doesn't give a shit, and the only "justice" that's out there is created by man. Unfortunately, that's probably why we've got lawyers. I guess what I'm saying is let the guy have his fantasy so long as he doesn't act on it.10 points

This was always going to happen. Raising the doomsday alarm was the only way to mitigate the hospitals being overrun which in turn stopped the hospitals being overrun which makes the doomsday mockers believe they were right all along.10 points

Ok, here's the follow up I said I'd come back with... Chicago is staying on top of this. Our major hospitals downtown don't have a ton of reserves with ventilators but the city overall has been great about shelter in home. We were worried about the big rush after the St. Pat's parties on Saturday March 14th. Orders went in place starting that Monday. We are two weeks past that and holding up pretty well. The big players downtown (NW/UC/UIC/Rush) really feel ready and it looks like instead of one giant peak we will get a 3-5 week period of increased needs but the capacity seems to be there. Again, that's the current model but things could still go sideways. I know there's a pissing match on here between the doomsday group and those that think those people are morons. The bottom line is if we didn't quarantine, the doomsday group would have been right. But all of those people should be happy to be wrong. I just hope we don't have a bunch of mouth breathers who are like 'durrrrrr, see I told you!!!'. Be the bigger man. And if those people are, in fact, all over the place...I could give zero fucks. Because it's obvious at this point science is winning the war with messaging. Now, we're not winning every battle...see some ignorant governors etc. But the overall war is going to science. All the 'well go ahead and cancel everything...haha, that won't happen because economy this and that'. Sorry, you were wrong - pretty much everything was shut down. Look at the states with no stay at home order. They're the who's who of dumbest motherfuckers in America...10 points

We keep looking very close to the goal scenario. The only thing changed is I added a 7-day lag time between reporting and death for both scenarios. Not sure if that makes it looks better or worse, but hopefully better in the future. Here are the infection (blue) and mortality (orange) rates. I re-colorized this since last posted. The 10-day trends should be easier to make out now. In the goal scenario we should eventually hit 0.10 (around April 19th on the 10-day trend). So we may be on the right path, but there's still a ways to go. If my lag periods are is correct, then we should have seen just the glimpse of deaths beginning to slow on March 30. This maybe happened but it is far from certain. Everything is currently trending down. ---------- Still working on model rebuild. It should be a big improvement in forecasting out beyond a few days.8 points

Every one of these news conferences should ask him who dismantled the Pandemic Response Team...EVERY FUCKING ONE OF THEM. He can fold and blame someone on his team but he needs to be asked over and over. When he states who it was...if he throws someone under the bus (pence) he needs to be asked why that person wasn't let go. Or at least throw some shoes at his fat orange head.7 points

These stay at home orders aren't going to amount for shit until retail/home improvement/other shopping entities start making changes. People are getting bored at home and just walking around stores for hours and that isn't going to stop the spread. I realize shit happens and you might need a pipe fitting in a pinch, but you shouldn't be allow to browse the fabric aisle at Hobby Lobby just because you're tired of home schooling your kids. They should completely shut down all "non-essential" retail now, and "essential" stores need to limit the amount of people in the store at one time. This would not only limit close contact, but would discourage people from leaving the house just to browse. Grocery stores would be the only exemption from this.6 points
