  1. Just came here to post this. Really cool overview, though probably not any info that folks in this thread don't already know.

  2. Yes, the Russians are using the same tactics, strategy, and logistics that they used during the Great Patriotic War. Drafting a huge conscript army, sending it mal-equipped to defend fixed positions, from which the leadership dictates that they cannot retreat, using "blocking units" to enforce the no-retreat order--it's all straight out of the GPW playbook. But why should it be any different? Russia hasn't fought a significant conventional war since the Great Patriotic War.* Contrast that with the United States Army. The US Army has been engaged in a major conventional war pretty regularly from 1941 to the present day. Korea; Vietnam, Iraq, Iraq again--since 1941, the US Army has never gone more than 15 years without being engaged in a significant conventional war. So that does two things. First, it means that your senior officers/NCOs always have combat experience. But beyond that, it gives the Pentagon a real-world test to develop new battle plans and see what works and what doesn't. Russia doesn't have that. Their most recent test of what works and what doesn't is the GPW. But aside from being 80 years ago--and there have been a few technological developments in the last 80 years, this isn't the Great Patriotic War: Russia doesn't have nearly as large a population today as it did in 1941 (194M vs 144M). So the available pool of conscripts is about one-quarter smaller; Ukraine isn't fighting a two-front war, with the Western Allies keeping 40% of its army engaged in places like North Africa, Italy, and France; Russia isn't getting supplies from the United States. The last one is the really big one that has been ignored by Soviet/Russia historiography. The Soviet Union was only available to fight because of Lend-Lease supplies. The Russians have long written about the T-34 as being the great achievement of Russian manufacturing/logistics that won the war (ignoring the enormous number of Patton and Sherman tanks that the Red Army used). But the T-34 was built on an American chassis with American steel. It ran on American diesel and fired American ammunition. It was crewed by guys wearing American boots and eating Spam. Russia supplied the meat for the grinder in the GPW, but it was a victory of American manufacturing and technology. Their historiography/propaganda leaves off that second bit. So now they're going to just feed meat into the grinder. But without the manufacturing and technology, all you get is ground meat. And that's what Russia is going to come away with. * No, I'm not counting Afghanistan or Chechnya. Those were counter-insurgency operations. And they're very different from a significant conventional war against a national army that can field armor and artillery. But it does raise the observation that before the Russians broke out the GPW playbook, they were running the Afghanistan playbook. That's what they expected--to quickly take over the capital, install a puppet regime, and then conduct a large counter-insurgency operation. That's reflected by the fact that they were sending in VDV units on aluminum BMPs in the first wave. And no, I'm also not county Georgia any more than I am counting Panama or Grenada.

  3. The tap was already off. The pipelines associated with Nord Stream 2 had been inactive due to the sanctions. And Russia had already chosen to shut off the pipeline for Nord Stream 1. That's precisely why this was a no risk action by Russia. 1) It wanted the pipelines off to punish Europe for supporting Ukraine; 2) Destroying the pipeline allows it to argue that someone else did it (e.g., Ukraine, US) and that person is responsible if Europe can't get gas and freezes; 3) Creates confusion and doubt among Ukraine and its allies. Alternatively, no one in Europe, the US, or Ukraine benefits from destroying the pipeline. Europe needs gas. Ukraine needs support from Europe. US needs to keep the alliance together. If anyone besides Russia is discovered to have destroyed the pipeline, it risks the entire alliance, Ukraine's support, hell, it risks instability in NATO itself. There is no real, tangible benefit to anyone but Russia. Again, this isn't that complicated. It is the same playbook Russia has been using for the last decade. Create confusion, chaos, and instability in the west. That's it.

  4. Update. We evacuated this morning. The good news is that if we get past the 3 am high tide the house will survive as will the wine. We are now safe in Miami. The bad news is that friends across Vanderbilt Beach Road on the fingers have all lost their houses. Total devastation from the surge.

  5. What a bitch ass aggy thread. No one is happy we lost to Tech, but the return of Ewers + the growth of our young OL + watching Bijan before he's gone should generate some excitement for the next 2 months. Grow up, ya gaping pussy. Your aggy-coaster esque hysterics have been amazing to watch. Offseason imma: we're gonna be so mediocre and average Post-Bama imma: OMG THIS TEAM FUCKS! GET ON THE TRAIN BITCHES! Post-Tech: we suck, i'm out

  7. Listened to the Inside Russia guy's podcast some more - he's devoting today's episode to why (and probably why) he left. He did leave his family behind, but he trusted the people who were looking after them, and the whole reason he was leaving was that the borders were going to be closed to men leaving anyways. He mentioned something very interesting, and I'm paraphrasing - he had a good friend in Uzbekistan that he called up and said he was considering visiting him and by proxy leaving Russia, and said friend was like "what the fuck, when are you coming and where" and Constantin tells him the date and that he's flying from Russia to Tajikistan, and his Uzbekistan friend then says something like "okay, when you land in Tajikistan, I've got a guy who is going to get you to the Uzbekistan border, and you're going to meet another guy there and he's going to bring you across the border to me". Every one of us needs a buddy like that - somebody that you can call up when shit goes down, and you're like "I need to leave" and they're like "okay, fly to this country, and I've got a guy there you will meet, and he will take you to another guy who will get you across the border to third country and he will bring you to me." Sure, if you're in your 20s or 30s, you may not think you need a friend like that, but when you get in your 40s, it's good to have a friend like that.

  8. Oh, so two non-operating pipelines are destroyed and now if Europe wants gas literally the only option they have is to lean on Ukraine. And idiots the world over are blaming America for energy terrorism. WhY wOuLd RuSsIa Do ThIs?

  10. heh. I think I've told this story before. Once upon a time, I resided in Costa Mesa CA. One friday, for lunch I ordered a platter of deviled eggs at a place in Newport, the name of which escapes me. They were so fucking good, I couldn't stop eating them. Fast forward to later that evening. The GF wants to go to dinner. We end up at Yard House in Triangle Square. There's also a movie theater in Triangle Square. That night happened to be the first showing of "Sex in the City". As you might imagine, the bar was filled with a bunch of stuck-up OC bitches, dressed in their best outfits, drinking fucking cosmos as they pre-gamed for the stupid movie. Well, we were in a booth across the restaurant, and my stomach was rumbling. Badly. The men's room was past the bar area. I made my move for the shitter but didn't make it all the way...instead I crop dusted the entire bar area with the foulest odor imaginable. As I looked over my shoulder, the stench seemed to flow at a steady pace, because you could see the women turn their heads in dusgust, one after the other, like a synchronized swim team. I didn't intend to do it, I swear.

  11. Anyone with American citizenship that is still in Russia at this point, we don’t want back. They are either too Russian or too stupid. Let them find out.
    13 points
  12. There is only one country for whom destroying the pipeline is essentially a zero risk endeavour. Everyone else sacrifices something or risks world changing blowback if discovered with very little benefit. Stop overthinking this. It was Russia. Full stop.

  13. The Russians have already cracked the case. It was those darned Ukrainian Nazis!

  14. Yeah, but the reason he can't get women is because women are stuck up bitches, and they only want Chads, etc. etc. No, dude.....your problem is the same as all the other pathetic incels. Shower, get a haircut, do an hour's worth of research into a new wardrobe. Practice social engagement with people with no expectations in return -- that is, be interested in what people have to say and be nice to them. Practice that, a lot. You'll develop a modicum of game. And give up your sense of entitlement to a supermodel. Supermodel-types are .001% of the human population. Do the math. The model is not going out with you. The super cute fun girl might, if you treat her like a human being, you pathetic entitled shitweasel.

  16. I know we love to hate on Card, but that dude was nowhere near the biggest reason Texas lost. Other than a couple mistakes, he actually played fairly well. Yeah, yeah, “but the deep ball”… for fucks sake, how many game managing QBs have been on national championship winning teams? Card isn’t great, but he’s progressing and definitely serviceable. If the rest of the team performed as well as Card did, that game was a blowout.
    12 points
  17. Yep. As others have noted, he is also not very good at locating the ball quickly and adjusting his route. The exact thing that Neyor showed great skill at in his film; that injury really hurt this team. Card is not a great deep ball thrower but there have been multiple attempts where if Worthy was as elite as he wants to get paid like he is, he would have made the catch. When a pass 40+ yards downfield lands two yards to your left and you never deviated from the straight line of your route, that's on you as a receiver.

  18. It's been said many times before, but this thread is fucking great. The range and depth of topics discussed. The high level information throughput. The laughs and the dusty moments. Fucking proud to be a part of this community.

  19. Why do y'all think Russia would blow the pipeline for some outside reason? They do stuff like this so they can claim somebody else did to get their own population to support the war. Especially with the protests about mobilization going on right now. They don't care what we think or how it affects us. They only care what Russians think about the pipeline that US Nazi NATO terrorist blew up.

  20. Poland has its rule of law issues but they are categorically different from Hungary and speaking from years of experience in the region-I have close to zero concerns of Poland as an aggressive, non-status quo power to the West. Simply a non-sensical thing to do. This does have a regional and European component. Poland wants to be a decider and not an afterthought in the EU. It will not and cannot have Germany’s heft as an economic power. It is taking steps to position itself as a security and energy indispensable nation for the continent. This will give it lots of leverage as the EU talks about enhanced security cooperation and will allow Poland to frame the terms of that discussion. Not Germany. It’s not about using its army against Europe. It’s about using its army to defend Europe and thereby become a main character and not second billing.

  25. I was chatting with a friend over beers, sharing some humor from this site, and he asks me how long I've een wasting my life with longhorn message boards. I was like damn, let me think about that. After losing to ousucks for the third year in a row I started Googling variations of "mack brown sucks" and came across Hornfans. I registered as Okiehater, and had absolutely no idea what I was getting into. It was my first time posting on a message board and I sucked at it. Basically streams of conciousness put to text. Imagine Derka with less self awareness. Everyone hated me and I was banned after less than 100 posts. I went through three more usernames, but my stupidity was immediately recognized and was banned with extreme prejudice. Thats when I discovered the other boards like Cactus Cafe, Quakenbush's, etc, and that's where I lurked and learned how to suck less. I returned as MissingInAction and started sharing stories of debauchery and mayhem. When Austin 3:16 was created I really hit my stride. My most famous threads are probably The BBQ Bandito caught on tape, and The Mother Daughter three way. Am I better person now than 20 years ago? Who knows, but I'm definitely different. I've met a lot of cool and interesting people along the way. Here's to 20 more.

  27. There are individuals on the left, who are so anti-capitalist, and "anti-Western Imperialism" that they find themselves stanning for authoritarian regimes that are in no way leftist, simply bc they oppose the west. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Conversely, as you already know, there are those on the right - ManInBlack and others in this case - who ostensibly support individual rights and the absence of government, but who back autocratic fascists like Orban and Putin. The irony is that you have two diametrically opposed ideologies, with adherents so confused, they now find themselves standing under the same banner.

  28. These are the same people who aren't just surprised, but genuinely PISSED OFF, when they go to a foreign country and all of their signage isn't in English, the people don't speak English, and they can't get McDonalds or Subway for every meal. I hate those people.

  29. Why in the FUCK would you summon them here? Humble Beast cares very deeply, sir. Bite your tongue. You'd think, but hey, we should already have manufacturing, chip manufacturing, pharmaceutical and medical production sourced here in the US for national security reasons, and yet here we are. Didn't that chip bill only pass recently along party lines? Add in the fact that it's individual companies that choose to do business with China, for reasons of profit, and then spend ungodly money on campaigns where political parties accuse any effort to subvert doing business with China as "anti-capitalism" and straight up "communism" and well, here we are...fastened about the neck to an evil anchor because we like $500 flat screen TVs. So, to answer your question, Yes we are that shortsighted.
