  8. Exactly, which of part of the insanity of the idea that PBS is somehow harmful to poor people. It’s a free public benefit, it is the least biased source of reporting, it is arguably the only free educational media where your child is not the product. I don’t see why HBO or Netflix or whoever can’t do Frontline, and I guess they make some similar content, but PBS does that thing better than anyone and the lack of a profit incentive is surely part of it. It’s important and it is good, unless your definition of good has been so heavily corrupted that you put child rapist stickers on your car or you espouse libertarianism as if it comes from a moral high ground. Let’s tear down the libraries too. And of course the schools and universities, which is the plan. Welcome to Costco, I love you.

  10. I wonder how many of the confused people in this thread who think public broadcasting (a purposefully non-profit enterprise) was funded for the same reason specific for-profit industries are subsidized (to help them get established so they can then become net providers of jobs, tax revenue, and general economic benefit down the road) think that the oil and gas industry should also be shut off from any subsidies. They're pretty established at this point, don't you think? Shouldn't we all agree that after decades of being pumped full of our tax dollars, they've had enough time to determine if there is a "real market demand for what they're doing"? For those keeping track, public broadcasting receives about $535 million per year in federal funding. In contrast, the oil and gas industry receives over $15 billion in direct federal subsidies (in addition to billions more from states), and implicit subsidies are estimated to be well over $750 billion annually. I assume the response from someone who defends these oil and gas subsidies would come in some variant of "it's much more nuanced than that", and I would agree. The same is true for public broadcasting, which has never been funded for the same reason we subsidize specific industries at the state and federal level. One might argue that we need the oil and gas industry to survive, that it's a defense issue as much as anything. That's a reasonable argument. But one could argue the same thing about public broadcasting. There is no greater threat to our democracy than a poorly educated, disengaged population. There is a particular group of people working hard to ensure that this very thing comes to pass, however, and if one's head isn't entirely up one's ass, the reason for this is abundantly clear. Based on the numbers alone, anyone who will defend the subsidies for industries such as oil and gas, which are perfectly capable of running a massive profit with no assistance from the federal or state governments, should kindly shut the fuck up about the pittance that goes to public broadcasting. I mean, those of us who enjoy fossil fuel-based products can surely just pay more to make up for the loss of billions in free money that industry receives, right? We can tackle the insurance industry next, if you'd like (hint: it's in the trillions annually and makes oil and gas look like child's play). You say you want to make significant cuts to federal spending that mean something and reduce waste? You say that for-profit enterprises should be able to survive in the market without government assistance? Most people, regardless of their political affiliation, would likely be in favor of these things. I've identified two industries in this post alone that would put trillions back in our collective pockets if they were forced to operate as truly capitalist enterprises. There are plenty more. But that's not what this is about, is it? It's time to stop hiding behind the complete bulllshit that this has anything to do with reducing spending. The party of fiscal responsibility no longer exists, if it ever did, and everyone who isn't a bumbling fool knows it. The OBBBA passing alone should be all the evidence a functioning brain needs to understand this. Stop playing fiscally responsible dress up and just admit you enjoy authoritarianism and crushing your perceived enemies under your boot heel. Why pretend otherwise? To help you sleep at night? Tough shit. Twenty-two percent of this country voted for this, and every last one of them should be held accountable for it, even those who have already come to regret their choice. The real blame, of course, lies in the hands of those who didn't vote at all and allowed such a small percentage of our population to destroy what has taken 250 years to build. We can't get that mad at the fools for acting foolish. It's the disengaged who are truly to blame, and now that we are getting rid of public broadcasting and getting rid of public education, there will be so many more disengaged Americans in the future to assist in the power grab. Congrats, I suppose, but if there ever was a Pyrrhic victory, this is it.

  11. Wrestlers, especially wrestlers of HHH's generation (and before) are almost all carnies at heart. When it is convenient, HHH is the real person. When it is convenient, HHH is just a stage persona and you're silly for taking him seriously. Hulk Hogan was notorious for the same kind of deflection. There's a reason that Trump has been involved with WWF/E throughout his life, and it's because he's also a fucking carny.

  13. Update for today from Bobby with some interesting takes on the younger players. ***** Texas will hold its fourth practice of training camp later today. It’s scheduled to begin at 6:30pm, just like last night. The first two practices were held in the mid-afternoon of the Texas heat. They’re meant to get a team prepared for the worst conditions. The team got a real feel for that. One Texas player was severely dehydrated and subsequently missed the next couple of practices (yes, I know who it is, but, no, I’m not going to name them). Bottom line, the message from coaches is clear: stay hydrated, get your rest and treat your body right because this is an extremely taxing sport, especially in the middle of summer. ** There’s a little positive chatter behind the scenes on recruiting. Texas is gaining some confidence on a pair of players currently committed elsewhere. ** There are so many talented young players on this roster, a few of them are already looking to leapfrog talented veterans or at least solidify a spot in the rotation either as a starter or key back-up. Those players (so far) include: - WR Daylon McCutcheon - TE Emaree Winston - OL Nick Brooks - DT Josiah Sharma - DE Lance Jackson - NB Graceson Littleton Others to watch for: - WR Michael Terry - TE Nick Townsend - OL Jackson Christian - DE-DT Justus Terry - CB Kade Phillips* - S Jonah Williams* * Neither Phillips nor Williams practiced the first two days. But both have been received positive reviews through summer training, enough so to merit inclusion on this list. ** KJ Lacey, Jamie Ffrench, Kaliq Lockett, Jordan Coleman, Zelus Hicks, Myron Charles, and Bo Barnes all look the part early but are not situated to make a major positional impact early. However, Hicks and Barnes could absolutely be major contributors on special teams. Lockett might also get some early run there, too. He was surprisingly good as a gunner and blocker in early punting practice reps. ** We’ll keep our ears to the ground for more practice notes for you. Hook’Em!

  28. IT stuff: Some Saturday afternoon quick hitters for you. The team will take to the practice field at 5:30 again today before being off on Sunday. Star This has probably been the position of greatest mystery the last couple of months. Wardell Mack and Graceson Littleton played Star (nickel) a lot during the spring and continue to do so. But, sources and logic lead us to the opinion that a more experienced veteran will get the start against Ohio State. Enter…Michael Taaffe. The senior second-team All-American safety first made waves in the program at the position and he’s been there a pretty decent amount in the first three practices. He has looked good at the spot (one of the first players mentioned), though he has also worked at safety. While at safety he’s with Jelani McDonald. When Taaffe goes to Star, McDonald has been paired with Derek Williams, Xavier Filsaime, and Jordon Johnson-Rubell. On the surface, it seems unlikely Taaffe would play Star outside of certain looksβ€”he’s the main communicator, after all, and he’s unlikely to play the position in the NFL. But, he has the experience, intelligence, and selflessness to do it. We’ll continue monitoring to see how it plays out. Ryan Wingo and DJ Campbell The sophomore wide receiver and senior offensive guard participated in the first practice but missed the second and third. Smart money says they won’t be back until Monday. While the issues aren’t something that should hamper them long term, they could each use a very productive August to springboard into the season. They are two of the most important players to Texas’ success this year. CJ Baxter is turning heads The third-year running back looks pretty damn healthy. I haven’t heard he’s 100% but did hear he impressed in Friday’s thud tempo practice. Just him being out there is a big win. Not only does he appear healthy after his significant knee injury, he’s also carrying his weight as well as can be expected given the layoff. Should we have expectations for him against Ohio State? Based on the first three practices, a trusted IT source believes Baxter will be available and play in Week 1. Two Friday standouts Junior linebacker Liona Lefau was mentioned for his ability in coverage. He’s a smart player who is always where he’s supposed to be. β€œWhen they’re in zone he’s like having another DB out there.” Redshirt freshman quarterback Trey Owens had one of his best practices ever. When Sark brought in Matthew Caldwell he challenged the other quarterbacks to beat him out. Owens apparently took that to heart.
