  1. I'm more excited this year than 2009. It's 2005 for me in terms of the last time I had more confidence. I thought the 2009 team was razor thin and that the OL was a piper tiger. I remain shocked to this day that Texas made it to the title game and was controlling it before Greg Davis' dumb fucking playcalling. My perspective has very little to do with Arch Manning. I really would like for him to be awesome, but the Texas football team, and all of us, don't actually need him to be awesome. He needs to be solid. Beyond that is all found money for this team. This is the deepest roster for Texas in most our lifetimes. There are dudes at every position and in every class. The storyline used to be that the Alabama second team was a top 10 team. I never fully bought that, but top 25 for sure. I see this roster in that same vein. The defense's second team is probably a top 10 unit, or close enough to argue it. There is that. I think the hype and the anti-hype at a national and casual fan level is all driven by the interest in Manning. That's fine. I just think it is misplaced. Kannell and Dvoracek taking Texas in the #8 spot of their rankings is a great example of the anti-hype. They're almost solely reacting to Manning and thinking they're coming across as savvy that he and the OL will have growing pains. Guess what? They will. The opposing team still has to score more than 17 points if and when that happens. Good luck with that. The Manning focus from every direction is burying this team's lede, and I'm a-okay with that.

  5. I don't think any expectations should be tempered. I think people still haven't adjusted to the reality of modern college football and why we should be very confident heading into this season. We have done an incredible job of retaining our coaching staff. It doesn't hurt that Sark is our true OC. That might have been considered a negative 5 years ago, but never worrying about losing your offensive coordinator is a massive advantage on the field and in recruiting. PK seems like a DC lifer and is happy to be here. We've lost position coaches due to their successes but have done a good job replacing them. We have done an incredible job of retaining players in this NIL landscape. Yes, Texas has the resources that others don't, but we've still had more success that other big money programs in that regard. Instead of just focusing on our roster changes or perceived deficiencies, go check out what other big programs are going through. It's rough out there. We are literally in the dream scenario at starting QB. 3rd year in program/system, legendary family, great kid, loves UT, no rush to get to the NFL. There are not any other starting QBs out there that are clear upgrades, and Arch's upside is the best. This offense will be humming by conference play.

  6. Some actual recruiting stuff today of interest, spoilered below from GH. He's very high on flipping Malakai Lee, likely because Lee had given Texas the notice that he wanted to join the class before he announced. That led to Texas trying to figure out if Ojo was in or out. He said he was in and they let Michigan win the commitment. Must not have hurt the Lee family's feeling too much if he winds up flipping.

  8. This is the third most excited about a Texas team I've been in my lifetime heading into a season, following the 2005 and the 1983 teams. I feel like we have the fewest roster questions of anyone in the country. Does anyone remember that 1999 Kansas State team? They went 11-1 but were smashed by Nebraska so no one ever thinks about them. I remember when they came to Austin. They had Beisel and Darren fucking Howard as their defensive ends. The defense overall was really salty with a lineup of 25 year old junior college transfers who were illiterate but enjoyed killing people on the football field. Well, and off the football field, too. Anyway, they'd line up those defensive ends with these ridiculous splits wide on either side. Major Applewhite would get the snap and it looked like those two guys could almost pick it off before they drove him into the ground. The stats say there were only 6 sacks in that game, but it sure felt like a lot more than that. I feel like we're about to see something similar on a weekly basis this year. We have literally never had this many great college level pass rushers on the same team. Ever. That's not even including what Terry and Jackson may turn into down the road. Simmons and Hill are NFL elite caliber. BTW, McCoy was The Prestige level magician for that 2009 team. I always felt like the 2008 team was better. We all talk about that Alabama game and the McCoy injury, but that 2008 Texas team beats Florida.

  10. It’s my opinion that this is the general attitude held by people who often don’t have the drive to be in a position to make that decision in the first place. A subset of this is, β€œOMG, he’s so old, why doesn’t he just pack it in? If I had his money I’d be sitting on a beach.” Well, it’s probably the freakish competitiveness that got him into the position in the first place that makes it so hard to walk away. But if someone doesn’t have that, he probably don’t understand that.

  12. Anytime Tarp can get a minute away from the football department censors, he's writing subtle SOS letters disguised as threads in which he's trying to let anyone who may be listening know - know that the aggie defense is going to have its cheeks clapped on a regular basis. Spoilered below is an article in which Tarp explains that the dominance in camp of the aggie offense might not be the greatest thing. It's also giving an indicator that the aggie front 6/7 is small and is going to get manhandled this season. He fails to say they're also slow and that they lack talent, but we don't need him to tell us that, as we've watched them play. Highlights: -York and Scooby Doo go 227 and 230, listed. York is a menacing 5'10". York is tiny and he's not going to have massive guys in front of him to buy him time on plays. He's like a midget version of Danny Stutsman. He'll rack up 10 tackles per game, averaging a distance of 9 yards down the field per tackle. -Albert Regis is listed as 6'1", 320. He's a buttplug who's probably not clocking in at 6'0" if he were somehow invited to the combine. -What they fail to account for in the interior isn't helped out on the outside, where they are also small-ish. Here's where Tarp explains that they're going to have to walk safeties up on most plays. -Luckily, Tarp points out the solution to all of this: The aggies need to always be playing with a lead. If they have the lead, they can theoretically apply pressure on the passing game. I didn't realize that being small and slow made your matchups favorable in the passing game for a defense, but I am not an aggie sportswriter, either. -The good news is that ATM won't be playing any teams this year with talent in the running game. There aren't any guys like Jeremiah Love or Ahmad Hardy or Jadyn Baugh or CJ Baxter with size and speed to punish their weakness. No mobile QBs like Taylen Green or Arch Manning or DJ Lagway or Lenoris Sellers to press the outside and run RPO. Nothing to see here, folks.

  13. We're so back. And just like every year, college football sends us a lovely amuse bouche with Week Zero. A note: there's some football product in mid-afternoon, but go for a walk and see your families instead. It's not worth it. #17 Kansas State (-3) vs. #22 Iowa State @ Dublin, Ireland (12 ET / 11 CT ESPN): Let's begin with a ranked rivalry game from the shores of the Irish Sea. Last year's Aer Lingus Kickoff was a barnstormer that presaged the 2024 FSU Seminoles as one of college football's all-time wet farts and Georgia Tech as a surprising ACC contender. This year the cornfed masses of Middle America descend on Dublin to watch two serious contenders for the Big XII title. Matt Campbell has another strong Cylcones squad. Rocco Becht returns, though he loses his elite WR corps to the NFL. The defense should be nasty, and Jon Heacock is one of the best minds in college football. Chris Kleiman thinks this is the year K-State can finally break through the 9-4 ceiling. Avery Johnson and Dylan Edwards are a great 1-2 punch for his offense, and their defense, especially the LBs led by Austin Romaine should be able to make Becht's life miserable. Smart coaches, good players, this should be a fun start to the season. I'll tip K-State in a low scoring battle. Fresno State @ Kansas (-12.5) (6:30 ET / 5:30 CT FOX): It's an alternate (and in some ways even more agricultural) Farmageddon in KU's mostly upgraded stadium. Love the wheat endzones. KU has Jalon Daniels back with some fun weapons to play with - Emmanuel Henderson from Bama and Bryson Canty from Columbia were highly sought-after WRs and Daniel Hinshaw is much-hyped to have a breakout season with Devin Neal gone. Matt Entz takes the reins in the Valley after Jeff Tedford stepped down, arriving from NDSU. As is tradition these days for coaching turnover, FSU flipped a quarter of its roster through the Portal and Kurt Warner's son EJ will be starting at QB. They will probably not be in good enough shape to handle a well-coached P4 team, but Leipold has dropped a season opener to South Dakota before. This is also the Bulldogs' last season in the MWC before they join the Zombie Pac-whatever. Sam Houston State @ Western Kentucky (-10) (7 ET / 6 CT CBS): CUSA action! These are likely to be two of the top four teams in the conference, so it's a surprisingly important game in Bowling Green (famous for Mammoth Cave National Park, and being the home of Corvette production). Stanford @ Hawaii (-2.5) (7:30 ET / 6:30 CT CBS): Is this a great game? No. Is it a G5 school in a beautiful location favored at home against a P4 with a really snooty fanbase? Yes. Enjoy the car crash.

  14. Amid all the darkness I am grateful to the President for returning the phrase β€œthank you for your attention to this matter” to my regular rotation. I’m using it in slack messages at work, texts to my kids, emails to the fence guys, when I tell my dog to get off the bed at 3am, you name it. It’s just a very classy expression.

  16. They're not making an argument about mail-in ballots. They're further undermining faith in our election processes. They don't care about legitimate ballots of any sort. They want all ballots to seem illegitimate so they can claim whatever they want. They're dismantling a republic not thinking about politics as usual. There are big stories about this all over the front pages of every newspaper in the country everyday. It's all anyone can talk about on TV news. I think the tide is turning.

  17. Crimea is not currently achievable by military means, but it’s important that Ukraine not formally surrender it. Putin won’t last forever. Even if it’s a permanent Cyprus-type division it’s very important that Ukraine not surrender its formal claim to Russia and for the world to maintain baseline sanctions as long as Russia is there.

  20. From CJ Vogel at OTF: Texas LT Trevor Goosby will be sidelined for a practice or two more according to head coach Steve Sarkisian Monday morning. Again, Goosby is not expected to miss much time and it is likely he returns before the week concludes. However, when Goosby went down Saturday during the scrimmage, it was third-year lineman Jaydon Chatman who entered the starting lineup at left tackle. Today, I am told there was some movement on the first team offensive line which aligns with a theory I had earlier this month in regards to Neto Umeozulu and his versatility. The Longhorns bumped Umeozulu out to left tackle, Cole Hutson out to left guard and plugged Connor Robertson into the lineup at center according to a source. We have heard often about the cross-training ability of many offensive linemen currently in Kyle Floods' room, and this further builds on that topic with another veteran getting snaps at tackle. ***** That makes me feel like whatever the injury is to Goosby, it's worse than they're letting on right now.

  27. What data are you using to determine if this is a good thing for DC? Have you seen polling of DC residents to ask what they think? Crime is actually at a 30 year low here, is that the data you are using to determine this was warranted? Have you seen the news that restaurant reservations are down 30% since Trump announced this? Do you think the small business owners are on board? The Washington Post yesterday posted a map of where the extra help has been stationed. Damn near none of it has been in a high crime area in the city. I cross the city daily and I somehow haven't seen or ran into them yet but I have seen video of them nearby so I'm confident they are here. This "great start" appears to me to be a show business stunt set up by TV game show host so far.
