Checking In.  It's officially 6 months of sobriety today.  Finally starting to feel like a million bucks.

I'd have a celebratory steak or something but I've run into food tolerance issues of late.

On the plus side, I did a bunch of bloodwork and all my levels are normalizing and my cholesterol has dropped through the floor.  It's nice to see some quantitative evidence of how sobriety helps.

Glenn.

That's great.

I'm glad you bumped the thread, too.  I was going to bump it last week to get it back on page 1.  This thread was quite important in my decision to stop drinking and there are others that probably could use it.

Same here.

Actually putting my thoughts about quitting into a message for a bunch of strangers on the internet to read was oddly freeing and honestly step 1.  In the same breath, those strangers also helped me realize I wasn't alone.

Thanks assholes!

I'm certainly going to be monitoring it closer.  It's about time.

Today, I’ve been sober for one year.  Everything in my life is better and I’m surprised at how much I don’t miss it.  I’m at peace and life is good.

It works if you work it.  Early in my journey towards sober living, a member at my home group who I respected highly told me the following: "Len, the good news is you don't ever have to take another drink-the bad news is, drinking is not your problem!"  After 27 years without a drink, that statement rings more true than ever in my life. The spiritual kindergarten is my home for whatever issues I think I might have, and there are no shortage of teachers who have helpful suggestions for those issues.

Congratulations to you on your one year-the best is yet to come.

I am sensitive and I do not suffer well, and I need to pray for others.

That’s the tl;dr of the 10 paragraph missive I just typed about traveling to Yellowstone with my wife’s alcoholic uncle.

Grateful to be sober, safe and reasonably sane. And to have a meeting to attend.

I haven’t read the whole thread, are there any sober-curious or non-alcoholics that have stopped drinking? I’m not an alcoholic, but I decided to severely cut back on drinking earlier this year when I decided to get back into working out and counting macros again. I just couldn’t justify drinking since it’s so bad for you with empty calories. It’s totally catabolic and what why point of working out hard and counting macros and then destroying it with alcohol.

Anyway, last time I drank was for my husbands bday in early July, and before that it was during Memorial Day. So I’ve only really drank a couple times in the past 8 months. I’m loving it so far. I feel healthier, my husband and I have lost 30 lbs so far.

I’m considering that this may be a totally sober football season for me. I’m not scared, per se, but I am a little jealous of those I see living it up and desire a drink. But I’m holding strong so far.

Sorry this was a long post. Like I said, I don’t consider myself an alcoholic, but obviously there are relationships with alcohol that need to be confronted. Especially during football season

If it's any reassurance, that you have cut way back is pretty inconsistent with being an alcoholic.

Good job, Subliminal. I, like you, evaluated my relationship with alcohol and have for the first time in my life., set up a moderation plan.  I will have no more than 2 drinks per event.
If I plan a cheat day, it is with safety first in mind.  Then I can drink more than 2, but I am not allowed to get drunk, so lots of water and time between drinks. This can’t happen often, only once every 3 months.  I am trying to be an adult about my alcohol use for the first time. Unfortunately, I have to be mindful and strict since I was abusing it most of my life. Right now I am abstaining and then I’ll go with my plan. I used my Employee wellness insurance to engage a counselor and we came up with my plan. You should consider something like this to hold yourself accountable to. It gives me a sense of confidence to have a plan.

Yeah I’m definitely not someone that must stop today, forever, or else I could suffer serious consequences. But I’m more aware of my drinking and how much it was a crutch the longer I go without it and am in situations that I would normally drink. I’m going to the game next weekend and will be in a fancy box in the SEZ and it’ll be hard not to drink when it’s right there

yeah I’m approaching it in that I’m not announcing that I am quitting drinking. Because if have a drink later I don’t want I feel like I failed. It’s so absolute. Il just not drinking right now and we’ll see how long it goes. Maybe it’ll be a permanent thing, I don’t know. Good luck to you

My abstention ends March 16, 2026. Just in time for me to drink a green beer for St Patty’s day.
Currently, I drinking mocktails and am doing fine. I’m a cheap date! I dropped weight too, and lowered my blood pressure. There is a lot to be said for limiting or giving up alcohol. Being mindful of my health is a big plus for me, aside from alcohol moderation, I’ve committed to a health focus as well. So far, so good. Good luck to you too!

This sounds sort of like when my fat ass followed @troph and did a four-day fast. Was a lot to eat healthier after that.
