Texas Basketball Recruiting Notes: Keep Austin Beard

Is this the last year with one and dones? I remember talk about the NBA doing away with the one year requirement in 22, but couldn’t remember if it’s actually been passed or was just a rumor.

Believe 24 or then 25 draft is the new timeline on getting rid of one and dones to match up with the expiration of the CBA.

IT on George

Spoiler

Five-star guard Keyonte George is already in Austin this morning for his official visit. The 6-foot-4 guard is the top in-state target for the Longhorns, and according to a source that spent two days with George this week ... Texas begins June with a considerable lead over Kentucky, Baylor, and Oklahoma State. The source believes George will play college basketball for one season, and sees great branding opportunities at Texas as well as a very good fit with Chris Beard.

For Texas fans heading to the baseball game today, show Keyonte George some love as he will be there for part of the game with Beard and staff. George has official visits scheduled to Baylor, Kentucky, and Oklahoma State this month in that order currently, sandwiched around Pangos Camp and events.

The Longhorns are the only program that is receiving a weekend visit.

Who all are the remaining options for a big man that focuses exclusively on rebounding and rim protection?

Tre Mitchell and Bryson Williams.

Funny enough I think they were always the best two bigs available. But sounds like there is a lot of "handler" nonsense involved with both of them.

Spoiler

Texas is also hosting its first 2022 target this weekend for an official visit as Lewisville (Texas) iSchool five-star shooting guard Keyonte George is in Austin meeting the staff and players while also checking out the campus. The staff has been rolling out the red carpet for George and the interest from his family has followed. He was intentionally the only recruit that they had on campus this weekend which has given the staff the ability to give their full attention to the cause.

On Friday afternoon, George and his mother were spotted at Disch-Falk Field along with Chris Beard, Ulric Maligi, Jerrance Howard, Chris Ogden, Devin Askew and Jaylon Tyson as they took in some of the postseason baseball action going on across Interstate-35. The weekend will consist of multiple meetings with coaches, tours of campus and lodging at the Four Seasons in downtown Austin. George arrived on Thursday and will head back to DFW on Saturday night.

The pitch to George during his recruitment has been fairly simple from the Texas coaching staff: play in one of the best conferences in college basketball while being developed by one of the more loaded coaching staffs in the country. It's no secret that George will be a one-and-done in college, and Texas is pitching how they will be able to provide him with the best opportunity to be a high lottery pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. The 2022 recruiting class will also play their opening season in the new Moody Center set to open in time for the 2022-23 season.

George picked up another Crystal Ball Prediction in favor of Texas on Thursday night by Kentucky insider Chris Fisher with a confidence score of 7.

I thought it was 23.

It's gotten pushed back a year every year basically, the year with the most "hype" so far had been 22 but that obviously didn't happen. Here's an article from last year from CBS which mentions that it could be part of the CBA negotiations. I know I've heard it discussed on podcasts from people I'd trust, frankly there's nothing concrete out there though.

So the current deal runs through the completion of the 2023 season, but there is mutual opt out after the 2022 season. I think it's beyond reasonable to expect the players to opt out.

(Gerry Hamilton) Post visit update: Keyonte George

Spoiler

The five-star guard has concluded his official visit to Texas with his mother, and is now headed to Pangos Camp.

As expected, the visit went really well. There was the obvious information about how a year at Texas would provide major brand building opportunities for a year before heading off to the NBA. And there was the sell of being a huge piece in the resurgence of Texas basketball, opening of Moody Center and helping Texas win a national championship.

At the end of the day, however, the visit was about taking in the culture that Chris Beard and staff are creating, and how George would fit perfectly in the culture. Spending time with the type of mature players Beard and staff are targeting in the program, and how similar they are to George.

Texas went into the visit as the favorite, and nothing changed in that regard.

George is scheduled to make June OV’s to Baylor, Kentucky and Oklahoma State with Texas is the only school scheduled to receive a weekend OV.

Spoiler

Power forward Kijani Wright (Windward School/Los Angels) is set to make his official visit to Texas June 11th-13th. While many of the nation’s top programs are in pursuit, such as Michigan State, Kansas and Florida State, the combination of academics and basketball places Texas ahead of many of the suitors. Headed into the official visit process, the Longhorns’ top competition for the 6-foot-9 skilled big man is considered to be USC and Stanford.

Combo guard Anthony Black (Coppell) is scheduled to make his official visit to Texas June 9th-11th. He will be accompanied by his mom and dad. His mother played soccer at Texas before transferring to Baylor to finish up her eligibility. Black’s father, Terry Black, played basketball at Baylor. Black’s best friend is priority target Keyonte George who just took his own official visit to Texas this past weekend.

The 6-foot-7 versatile guard also has OV’s scheduled in June to Iowa State and Oklahoma State. Kentucky is showing interest, as is Baylor.

Spoiler

And because this staff is new to Texas fans, the staff will not bring in a prospect on an OV that Texas wouldn't accept a commitment from.

OVs set:
Keyonte George
Anthony Black
Kijani Wright
Kel'el Ware

Texas working to set up an OV with Arterio Morris. Would love to get Dariq Whitehead on campus for an OV, and obviously the staff is heavily recruiting Emoni Bates. Center Felix Okpara is very likely to set up an OV.

Zuby Ejiofor has an UOV set up for late June. PF Yohan Traore has an UOV June 11-12.

Regarding Keyonte George, word is he's either going to play his one year at Texas or he's going to the G league, D league, whatever they're called. He and the family want him to attend college, so the financial opps would have to be really crazy but it could happen. Baylor and Kentucky aren't going to do something crazy that overwhelms him, so I guess the thing to watch will be the alt-leagues with him.
