I think the expectation was that OU-NU would be a common matchup in the Big XII title game. It’s Nebys fault for sucking shit since ‘99.

Well, it became harder for them to win without Prop 48's on the roster

Yeah, that truly limited the out of state skill positions they would bring in and the massive funnel of OL that were essentially brought raised since PeeWee in the Corn system. Iirc, all residents of Nebraska used to be accepted to NU, grades and scores aside or maybe it was just the OL "walk ons". It's been a long time but I recall some absolute bullshit in that regard.

Good SI article on it from 2023

1996 SI article that describes Tom crying about the end of Prop 48 Guess who he later blames

You gotta give Corn some credit for improvisation and pragmatism. They were one of the first programs to invest heavily in first-rate facilities and strength & conditioning (plus "supplements" for their walk-on OL). Those farm boys didn't gain all of their size from baling hay and alfalfa.

Tom Osborne thought of himself as a saint for bringing those guys to Lincoln and keeping them off the street.

That was mighty white of him. (no pun intended 😉)

Oh man, the early 1990s were kind to Corn in that regard for sure. Hell, one might argue they created the blue print for MLB to follow in the late 1990s.

And I am 100% certain THIS GUY didn’t take any pages from the 1980s OU playbook on bagmen.

It was also two years on two years off, not a huge deal in my opinion, especially with the expectation of additional CCG matchups. Losing that as an annual game had nothing to do with the demise of the original conference membership. I mean, they are completely irrelevant in the BIG. Do they even have a rival? I read sometime ago about some Nebraska-Iowa history type rivalry. It was news to me, nobody fucking cares. They’re both bankrolling off of tOSU and Michigan money.

Am I the only one here who thinks that, ironically, if Nebraska had stayed in the Big 12 and Texas and OU left for the SEC anyway, that Nebraska would be the program benefitting the most in the new structure? They'd be playing in Texas every year, so recruiting would be vastly improved with that and games regularly in Florida as well. They'd be the sole blue blood within the conference and they'd have a lot of say. They'd likely also be primed to win at a higher clip.

I don't know, maybe I'm crazy. I like thinking about that, though. They're effectively trapped in some nightmare regardless, I guess.

Nebraska would absolutely be better off in the Big 12, outside of having a smaller TV paycheck.  And given their fan support, I'm not sure that said money is really helping them win anything.  They raise enough money to cover that gap with a lot of other programs, and like you said they'd be playing games in more advantageous recruiting situations.

I think Oklahoma will secretly regret being in the SEC a decade from now too.

Texas is the only school to leave the Big 12 and find real success, and I suspect that will remain true a decade from now regardless of what the landscape of the sport looks like.

Well. OU sucked shit from '96-'99 - in that span Texas played them twice. The last 3 that Nebraska played in OU did beat them twice and Texas beat them once.

Nah, they would still suck, and have less cashish. The money is all that matters anymore anyway.

I think he just meant their program's general status.

The money is all they have now.  No success.  No historic rivals.  No strong recruiting grounds.  They could barely beat the team that's likely finishing 13th in the 16 team Big 12.  They're just ass.

Can't you rev share TV money now? That almost certainly helps them wrt B12 vs B10. I'm sure they have a decent donor base but I don't think they're some NIL giant.

I think all P4 programs are limited to $20M in rev share to players (for now at least). NIL is still the difference maker and I have no idea how Neby is doing in that regard. I assume nothing special since they still stink.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but there's no cap on NIL earnings for players, right?

I've seen and heard that Arch is earning $6.5 MM this year, but I don't know if it's accurate. I mean, it's feasible with Red Bull, eyewear, clothing, and other individual endorsements from a car dealer, right? The NCAA can't crack down on these commercial opportunities according to the new law(s), correct? No, I haven't looked at this closely.

I think the House settlement also had a "clearinghouse" for NIL to evaluate whether the payments constitute legitimate NIL value and aren't just booster payments. It sounded really dumb and would almost certainly never even attempt to cancel an NIL deal. Even if it did, the name Manning itself would make his deals essentially limitless.

It’s interesting a fan from another fanbase sees the Oklahoma move to the SEC as a potential negative in the future.  Some of us poke at  OU for being the next Nebraska and it’s written up as rivals talking trash at each other.    But as far as Nebraska being better off in the Big 12, you have a valid point now with Matt Rhule as their coach.   In his short time at Baylor, he did build up good relationships with the Texas High Schools which even the last two Texas coaches before Sark failed miserably at doing.

I don't know how you can accurately assess the "NIL value" of a player endorsement. That will always be a subjective, more opinion-based valuation. I mean, if Vuori is overpaying for Manning advertisement it will adversely affect their business. I've never heard of that brand. Apparently, they're based in CA.

Companies measure ROI for marketing differently, too.

It takes a lot more than $20M to run a P4 team. Nebraska got $60M last year from media share. In the B12 they would have gotten ~$45M. So you max the rev share (assuming every team is doing that - not sure they are) and the B12 team has $25M left while the B10 team has $40M left. That $15M delta probably comes close to covering the salary for your entire coaching staff.

That's a very material difference and almost assuredly worth more than some marginal geographical recruiting advantage.

And while it's easier to win the B12 or make the CCG I don't think it's easier to make the CFP out of the B12.

I think you can only rev share up to $20M.  The rest has to come from NIL, which most blue bloods have in spades.  The financial advantage for the Big 10 and SEC is largely coaching and facility budgets (which is certainly material, but hasn't done dick for Nebraska).

If you put a "brand" school in the Big 12, they wouldn't be that disadvantaged by the conference.  It never kept Texas or OU out of the 4 team playoff.
