Maybe I'm lucky I'm not a bookfag because I'm really liking the show so far. Some of the best CGI I've seen, really good acting, and I really like the lead actress.

I read all the OT and Hobbit books multiple times, but never got into the deeper lore that Tolkein published. It never really interested me much, but now with this show diving into some of that history, I'm interested to learn more. All I know is, there is a ton of room to add more content to his works, and that's what this show is taking a lot of liberties with. I understand that parts of it might be in direct conflict with what we know about characters a few thousand years into the future, but you would think that people like Elrond and Galadriel would be a bit different in that time span.

Just think of all the stupid shit you did or believed as a kid/teenager that you would never do now as an adult, but you're still the same person. The Galadriel that met Frodo probably wouldn't jump ship in the middle of the ocean to go avenge her brothers deaths, but maybe 1000 years ago she was lot more willing to act impulsively and do that. I don't have any trouble with that concept. Expanding upon the lack of context and history to fill in gaps and create an entertaining and vast world of possibilities and adventures is the whole point of the Fantasy genre. So I'm pretty happy with this show so far, and hope they continue to keep dumping money into it. I've had Amazon Prime for about 15 years now, and it's finally paying off for something other than free shipping.

This show kicks ass, I dunno what the fuck is wrong with all the anti-woke morons. Yes there are a lot more people of color in this show than there were in the OT, who the fuck cares?  I bought a copy of the Silmarillion, never read it before, I'm very interested in learning more about the history of this world, it's a lot of fun.

I mean anything not Lord of the Rings and Hobbit is fanfic, Tolkien never finished anything else

Loved that episode.  Still have no idea who the fuck Adar is?  Are people thinking he's Sauron?

I mean, he can't be, can he?

How's that dude gonna convince elves to forge the rings?

Nerd of the Rings Youtube channel has many great videos about all this shit and more. I could type more but not sure what's allowed because it goes into the books. In addition, all this stuff now and the many future episodes are in the Simarillion, which I thought Amazon did not have rights to. I'm not sure what those rights mean because the whole downfall of Numenor is straight from the book. This show looks like it's going into detail about it.

This show kicks all kinds of ass. Fuck the haters.

There are things that are like a line or two in the LOTR appendices, that they can reference, but they can’t take the deep dives from other books.  For instance they couldn’t portray the death of Galadriel’s brother, but they could show him dead, etc.   it’s weird.

God I love Surly. I had a significant qualm with this show finally appear during this latest viewing, yet my main takeaway was "holy shit this show kicks so much fucking ass" and:

I mean it really does. For starters - the writing is absolutely amazing. I'm going to watch again during the weekend with subtitles on (like I did last weekend) and I'll be sure to take notes because there were another 2-3 lines this episode that just blew me away at how great they were. And I'm really, really hard to impress. I'm a total film snob. I think most episodical, dramatic TV shows are dogshit. Of course, I'm a big LOTR nerd so I'm a bit biased but for multiple lines every episode to really floor me is almost unprecedented and up there with some of the best TV I've seen.

That's ON TOP of the masterful art direction and cinematography.

It's just fantastic and an utter pleasure and such a welcome break from trying to navigate this mucky bullshit we call life.

THAT SAID - the qualm I have -

The sexualization is annoying and a distraction. And a serious departure from the movies. I'm probably posting this take in the wrong place so go ahead and neg me - but Earien is too hot. It's fucking stupid. If I want to watch porn I'll go watch porn. She's extremely pretty in a very sexual way and her big tits only compound it. It just feels out of place. Couple that with Bronwyn having her tits hang out all over the place during that last episode and it's pretty cringy.

Galadriel, for example, is a perfect casting. She's stunning - but in a very classy, powerful way. Earien by comparison looks like a playboy bunny. I weep for anyone that needs shit like that to get into this show - and I'm not holding it against the actress - but that's a serious miscast. It isn't in the spirit of Tolkien or the PJ movies - granted I'll of course forgive it because everything else is incredible.

I’ll grant you that Bronwyn has a fairly low cut dress, but you’re complaining about this being too sexual?   One of us is needs to recalibrate our meters

Interesting to me that I didn't feel that way about GoT and I wonder if it's because that world was so slimy, gritty and base that it actually seemed appropriate.

Lord of the Rings is something else, taking us out the gutter and into an idealized world in which the good in us eventually does triumph over our fears and limitations.

I love both, for many reasons.

Well, that's the first time I've ever heard a straight dude complain about titties.

I don't watch LOTR or it's adjacent material for titties. It's annoying. I don't care if anyone here agrees with me or not.

Like I said - the show is fucking awesome. In that same vein - I don't need to want to rub my dick every other scene.

You mean that outfit that intentionally highlights how big her tits are? Yes I'm complaining about it. It's dumb.

I hear ya on the Earien thing. I thought the same that it was out of place, as I can't recall any character in the OT or Hobbit movies where I thought about their boobs for more than a few seconds. She's also a completely new character that has no mention in the books, which means she could do anything, or possibly... become anything... Mwhahahhaha....

She did seem a bit too hot, or at least not quite modest enough for the spirit of LotR up to this point, but it doesn't really bother me. Arwen was the only really pretty female in the OT to me, and everything between her and Aragorn was so sappy I never really found her attractive enough to distract from the story.

Come to think of it, there weren't a lot of leading females in the OT. Eowyn, Arwen and Galadriel were the most prominent, and none of them crack the top 8 or so most important characters for me. Evangeline Lily's character was important in the Hobbit trilogy, but she was also completely made up for those subpar movies.

Thinking about it more, I can see why they intentionally made more leading women in this show and centered it around Galadriel. There really aren't a lot of them featured in the books, and well, it's 2022 not the 1940s. We should have a more diverse group of characters, and with that, some will be attractive. No big deal, so long as it doesn't become Game of Thrones with it.

Y’all are fucking crazy.

First, both Arwen and Eowyn were way hotter than any of these women.

Second, did I miss the Numenorean strip club scene or something?  Y’all are seeing overt sexual overtones where there are none. One girl has big tits?  Ok. It’s not like she is Princess Leia in a bikini or something.

Next thing y’all are going to be saying Disa is too sexual or something.

I'm still in my 20s. I want to fuck everything that moves. I can barely follow everything without subtitles were there not some absolute smoke shows in half the scenes.

We may depart here. Earien is way hotter than either of them for me. And I'm a fan of both Liv Tyler and Miranda Otto (moviefag alert).

I mean they were clearly letting Bronwyn's cinnamon buns get some extended edition screen time - if you know what I'm saying.

Look - I'll get over it. And it's not like it's hard to get over. If it was some standalone fantasy show I'd probably demand more salaciousness. I just think the LOTR Tolkien stuff is really special and I bristle when I feel like it's being cheapened.

Again - this show is fucking awesome. I'm a huge fan. But I'm not being myself and I'm certainly not posting on Surly if I can't bring up a personal bugaboo four episodes in.

I mean, she's with a group of nomads that live in what will become Mordor, so.... yeah....

I really expect my fictional shows about elves, hobbits, magical rings, dragons and evil sorcerers to be classy and realistic. I mean, a young female character has tits? Tolkien would be rolling in his grave!

Season 3 Shut Up GIF by The Office

I like how some posters are confused and wondering "you don't like Ema Horvath?" when my issue is that I think she's too attractive.

I like her very much.

I hate you because you have the stupidest opinions. “This actress for a character they made up out of thin air is too attractive” is the dumbest criticism for a show I’ve ever heard.

I think you’d do better just shutting up

I'm commenting on a casting decision. It's a perfectly normal critique of any TV show or film. I don't think her looks fit in with the rest of the universe.

The setting and what the show is about was not made up out of thin air.
