What if Quinn goes for 30/31 and 6 tds no interceptions with no run game and we lose 43-42. Would Quinn have put the team on his back??

was the 1 incompletion on the final play in the endzone?

Street is most certainly above Sam...shit, not even close.  And I'd have him above Quinn, too.  Subject to change if we win the whole fucking thing this year.

Great. I don't and I'm ok with that. I don't think you are stupid, retarded or anything else. You do you. You apparenly place the wins over everything else. Wins are important, but the QB typically isn't as responsible for the wins as much as they are judged by them, especially in that era  prior to scholarship limits in football and prolific passing attacks.

Sounds like a defensive struggle. I understand your point. It is still near impossible to compare the eras. Street was 6 of 10  for 124 yards and 2 INTs.

Game on the line, 4th & 3, hits his man in stride for a 44 yard completion in tight coverage. The fact they threw the ball less back then makes that play all the more impressive. Video linked to start at the game winning throw.

According to Paul Bryant, "winning isn't everything, but it's way the hell ahead of whatever's in second place."

But Street is quite literally responsible for the win that got us a national title. That game is essentially Texas/USC Vince 4th and 5.....Obviously 4th and 5 is the best play in program history. But prior to that Street/Peschel was that play. That play and Streets season/game had stood until VY as best in program history. You're brain is so rotted from statistics you can't even put Street, that game, his performance in context of the programs history.

IMO if Arch wins a national player of the year and 16 gets retired, they should also honor Street within that number retirement.

Yeah, in hindsight 1969 USC would've beat our ass.

I don't know enough about adjusted QB passing rating to suss this out -- the left/right/center disparity on the deep throws is odd.  Any chance that could be related to a tendency for our best receivers to line up or run routes to the right?

Just spit balling but I bet it has to do with mechanics and throwing more all arm passes to the right with bad footwork because he's comfortable doing that and the same deep down the middle. When he has to throw deep left he actually has to change his body to throw that way.

I deleted my post because I was looking at completion percentage not QBR.  That said, his completion percentage on deep throws to the right is higher (43% to 29%), even if the QBR is essentially identical, which is obviously a function of other inputs.

Were you hoping for somebody else to over-analyze Quinn Ewers's performance this year? Well, happy birthday.

Here is a gigantic spreadsheet with Quinn Ewers's performance in 2023 and 2024. It is broken down further by:

  • coverages
  • drive progression
  • field position
  • game situation
  • pass rush
  • play characteristics
  • pressure status
  • QB movement
  • throw depth
  • throw direction

All of this is beyond the LOS because we all know that Quinn is fantastic on passes before the LOS.

On the topic of Quinn's deep ball. Criticism is warranted. Attached is a strike zone of Ewers's performance in 2024 beyond the LOS and another one of the top 20 QBs in college football.

As you can see, Quinn struggles a bit on balls to the right and mightily on deep balls over the middle. However, he makes up for that by being a top-5 QB in every other zone on the field in Adj Passer Rating and on SISData's IQR rating.

Still, something is definitely off vs. last year. What I have found through my research is not surprising: 2023 Quinn > 2024 Quinn.

2024 Quinn's aPR dropped by 20 and 50(!) pts on deep balls to the right and middle and declined by 25 and 30 points to the intermediate right and short.

What is the difference?

It may be because Ewers has found himself in off-schedule drives more often than not this year, at a rate of nearly 2.5:1 (375 on-schedule plays in 2023 vs 145 in 2024).

It may also be that teams have increased their usage of man and cover 3 against Ewers. Anecdotally, I have noticed Quinn is quick to make reads and that has hurt him when the defense has a shell over man.

However, my guess is injury. These large drop-offs mainly occurred around Quinn's injury and have been progressively improving since. My main reason behind this is a 50pt drop-off when pressured this season vs last (and this has been improving over the season). His lack of mobility due to the ankle injury has been a story-line for a reason and teams have been exploiting it. In fact last season he spent a greater portion of moving/shuffling (think the 2nd TD in the OT win vs Arizona State) vs planted as he has this season. His injuries have made him a statue encouraging teams to increase their usage of blitzes by ~40%.

Another notable difference between the years is while he is 20pts better in aPR in the 1st half, he is nearly 50-60pts worse in the 2nd half. This seems like more of a coaching/running game issue rather than a QB issue. I would keep an eye on this going forward in future seasons. Do our coaches not adjust well coming out of the half?

I think it is important to read Sam Khan's article here. Quinn has always been compared to what he is not vs what he is due to his recruiting rating.

While Quinn is not as good as last year and he is not the greatest of all time, he is still a top 5 QB in college football this year. That is with him battling two injuries that are affecting his play.

We run that same right to left deep post that Quinn cannot hit on to save his life and it seems the stats reflect that. In contrast he is really good at throwing that sideline vertical. We've hit on that a bunch this year as well. This is pretty good considering we don't throw a bunch of deep comebacks like most teams do. He would look even better along the intermediate lines if we had those routes in our playbook. Sark doesn't really like to throw routes with no YAC ability.

In ‘69? Not on the Texas football team, that’s for sure. They weren’t allowed.

Only because freshmen couldn't play at that time.  Julius Whittier played from 1970-1972, beginning in his sophomore year.

I still can't fathom this.  I grew up in west Texas and remember the last football season at Odessa Ector.   They were loaded with talent that was unequally spread out to Permian and the broncos the next year.  lololol

Columbus radio is playing Ewers’ comments from a recent press conference about his time in Columbus. He roomed with Jack Sawyer who was in his recruiting class. A bunch of those guys he came in with are veterans on the Buckeye team now. He said he’s looking forward to seeing them again. I’m sure that’s a complex dynamic because he’d like nothing more than to win the game on the field but but they’re also guys for whom he feels genuine affection who gave him nothing but support both when he was a teammate and when he chose to leave the team.

His story, with leaving high school early and making six figures in Columbus without ever contributing anything meaningful to the team’s success, only to leave the team who made him a millionaire in order to chase more money and immediate playing time in his home state, is unprecedented. And now he has a backup QB who a segment of the fanbase would rather see take his job away from him. There’s a ton of pressure, and opportunity, on the young man’s plate right now.

Obviously I’m hoping his reunion with his former roommate Captain Jack will turn out differently than you hope it does. Let’s just hope this new expanded playoff doesn’t result in any career-ending injuries to the players on these teams from whom we’re demanding more and more sacrifice in order to entertain us.

No, not on bad terms at all. CJ Stroud had the job locked up for two years. No one in Columbus wanted Quinn to leave but everyone understood his decision. There were no hard feelings at all because NIL was new, Quinn’s situation was new, and no one had really seen him do anything on the field yet. Losing Joe Burrow had more of an impact but no one begrudged him his decision either and we celebrated his success. He just wasn’t going to supplant Haskins (RIP). It was what it was.

Quinn looks relaxed and like he wants to be there and he just keeps smiling. In his interview for ASU he looked upset and bored. Interview starts at 29:08

On Sirius they have all dismissed Quinn as not being a legit draft choice. It is really weird how hard they are going against him. Only E J Emanuel has a positive take on him. Not saying he is perfect but who is? It is funny, they have Howard and Allard as a better prospect. Laughable really.

The narrative I heard today on 84 was "Since this will be Texas' last game, won't Sark want to get Arch in?"

They explained that Texas will be down by 21 in the first quarter, so Texas will need to put in Arch for the rest of the game.

Count us out. Bring it on. Let Quinn rip.

As I recall, Street threw wobbily passes (as did Staubach). Pretty sure the one to Big Play Peschel was no exception. Street didn't pass all that much and Peschel didn't catch all that many passes. Seems it was fourth down and a handful of yards and nobody expected what amounted to a bomb. Everybody's heart stopped when Street let fly. With two D-backs draped all over him, RP made the catch.
