This is one of those bands that makes me say "what am I not getting here?". A ton of people whose music opinions I respect absolutely love them, but I do not understand the appeal at all. I've heard they're incredible live, so maybe that's the draw. But I feel like I'm getting lectured by an angry british guy when I listen to their albums. And I just don't find their songs all that appealing.

The funny thing is they sound angry and in many ways they are but they are more angry at the system (like Rage) and their songs are more about supporting others, mental health, substance abuse, struggles, immigration, etc.

I can see how they wouldn't appeal to everyone but the song that got me hooked was Gift Horse.  Danny Nedelko is a great song and even better live.  But a song like Pop Pop Pop or Mother... I can understand those are harder for someone new to IDLES.

Still love this video...

I love everything I've heard about the band except the music they make.

Yeah, not something I seek out.

I get it.  I had lumped them in with the Sleaford Mods as soccer hooligan music.  Then I watched that documentary I posted upstream.  It completely changed my opinion of them.  Now I love them.

So big change of plans for my trip to Texas.  Instead of flying in to Houston to see Devo and the B 52'son 11/2  I am now flying in to Austin to see Viagra Boys on Halloween and Devo on Saturday 11/1.

Probably be in a shrimp costume for Halloween and my Devo gear for, well, DEVO.  I'll have at least one of my compatriots with me in full gear.

Got a chance to see the Leon Bridges/Charley Crockett tour last night. Loved Leon's set. I'm a big fan of the funk/soul that he does, and he played plenty of the danceable upbeat songs I was hoping for. Pretty much every non "Beyond" and "River" hit that I hoped to hear was played, including the jams from his Khruangbin collabs. Great set.

Charley is very slowly growing on me, but I still haven't played a full album from him yet, just still haven't gotten all the way into his vibe. Pretty decent performer though.

Was at the show as well.

Enjoyed both sets but Leon was challenging to hear. I don’t know if the mix was intentional…if his voice was shot at the end of the tour so they tried to mask it behind the instruments…but it was annoying.

He has a softer voice anyway so maybe it is what it is but it sounded like we were in a stadium (ala NRG where I saw him years ago at the Houston Rodeo) and not a supposed amazing venue for live music acoustics. The songs without drums sounded much better to me so maybe that was it.

Or maybe this all says something more about my hearing than anything else.

Charley, I think, tries too hard to come across as “cowboy” but I’ve gotten to the point where I look past all that and just focus on the music which I usually enjoy.

My wife and I said the same thing about his voice. It sounded more weak and airy than I remembered him being. Maybe his voice is just shot.

I thought the mix was a bit off in general, some of the songs were missing the great bass lines that kinda make the songs, especially the ones from his 2nd album and the Khruangbin songs. Unless the band just didn't want to touch that. It didn't sound great to me either, so maybe your hearing is fine.

I'm right there with you on Charley. That's what bothers me about him, and I'm trying to come around, but having so much family in the RGV and hearing him call himself the San Benito kid when he lived there until he was 9 makes me roll my eyes. His family moved north to Dallas and I'm 1000% sure ain't never been back, a tale as valley as any, but he seems to hang on to any persona he can grasp. None the less.... the music is alright sometimes and I did like his live show.

Went to the Rilo Kiley concert last night here in Raleigh at the Red Hat Ampitheater. Direct support from The Mountain Goats, who I was also excited to see again.

The Mountain Goats mix was really bad, which is a bummer but I guess not that surprising - it seems like this tour has had a rotating cast of support artists based on region. I assume The Moutain Goats ae supporting this stretch of dates because John Darnielle lives in Durham. Would have loved to see one of the shows with Waxahatchee opening. Anyways, it would be weird to complain about the sound not being perfect on a Mountain Goats song. Good set. They've put out so many albums, the only ones I really know front to back are probably Sunset Tree and Tallahassee. They played a couple from each of those - This Year, Dance Music, No Children. I didn't recognize anything from All Hail West Texas. Anyways, short set, good set, but I dig the whole John Darnielle thing. I know it's songwriting work ethic rather than instrumental proficiency that is his thing, but it is interesting how ham fisted he seems as a guitar player.

The concert overall was a fun experience - short of maybe my own band's reunion show earlier this year, this was the most "gathering of the middle aged millennials" moment I've had. I really wish I was going to this concert - I am certain I would run into somebody I know and haven't seen for 15 years every few seconds.

Rilo Kiley was great. They clearly put a lot of work into prepping for the show - I don't think they had played together for 15 years. But they were tight, the arrangements were well done, everything sounded really good. I don't think I ever sat with "Under the Blacklight", but I listened to their other albums a lot during my high school and college years and this was one of those shows for me where I was excited to recognize the beginning of almost every song. I might have to go rewatch The OC or something.

Bought some last-minute GA tickets for Rayland Baxter at Ferris Wheelers here in Dallas for tonight. Low-key and cheap tix = good excuse to listen to some live music and drink cold beers with my ladyfriend in tow.

Have you found anything with set times for the weekend? Will the festival wrap up in time to make it to the night shows?
