As far as declining enrollment, a good way to reverse that is to field a good football team.

Underrated factor. My wife has a bunch of coworkers with high school aged kids in The Woodlands, etc. The ones that aren't going to UT or aggy all want to go to LSU, Bama, even Arkansas. It was eye-opening to me to learn that, but we hear it again and again.

Are SEC football powerhouses offering a better education than Tech, Texas State, UTSA, etc? Of course not. The difference is big time sports and the associated campus life. My bet is that most Texas public universities are fairly concerned about their branding/perception right now.

So NIL has to come from a 3rd party that is a legitimate business entity. Basically, all you need to do is create a hedge fund where a percentage of profits goes towards player development. That sounds easy enough. My brother was a VP in M&A at JP Morgan. It would take him all of a couple of weeks to set it up with coordination from the One Fund. And the companies that it invests in will use players as sponsors.

That's the intent of the House settlement. It's unclear how it will be enforced. We know some of the mechanisms. We do not know how effective they will be. We can also surmise it will be tested by programs seeking a competitive advantage.

In addition the House settlement has multiple legal challenges it will have to face. Also, there are other legal challenges to the NCAA that were not covered by the House settlement.

The Texas One Fund has said they will retain independence from the athletic department, even though donations go towards Longhorn Foundation points. They have now pivoted to creating partnerships with local businesses for NIL opportunities to be given to Texas student athletes, rather than asking for charitable work. I don't have a clue how any of that works, but that's what they've said.

I believe one factor for suburban kids going to Ole Miss, LSU, Bama, etc is because those schools are offering really good academic scholarships to get them. Especially the ones who fall out of the top 6%

A huge advantage if you are a privately held company with a small board or a board that is all in agreement.

Example, the CEO of Nike is a TCU alum,  he has been a higher up for years, has a great relationship with Phil, and Elliott has been on TCU's board of trustees and a big donor for the school. He and his wife recently funded a a new dorm I believe in the Greek area of campus.

I am pretty sure that while Elliott will do whatever he can to help TCU athletics, but their board and shareholders wouldn't be happy if he used Nike as a tool to fund the Frog's NIL program.

Thinking back to the idea that ojo signed before July, possibly giving tech an advantage of accounting- I wonder if other prospects have done the same but are still dragging out their public announcements for the social media engagements or because the school has asked for coordination at strategic times.

and if such things could be kept secret for very long.

A major difference is the money those schools are offering Texas kids w/ decent grades, because those states don't have the HS grads w/ decent grades to fill those slots.  For reference, if you graduate w/ a 3.6 GPA in TX, it's cheaper to go to Arkansas than it is to go to Texas State, and you get a much bigger university experience, especially if you care about sports.  Between aTm adding 20K students and all those SEC schools pulling so many 2nd tier kids OOS, it's a pretty big deal for TXST and the rest of us not named Texas or Rice.

Wasn’t that the rumor in softball? Matador Club had SAs signing agreements before they even entered the portal?

I don't doubt y'all about the money. Particularly surprised to hear the Arkansas/Texas State cost comparison. That seems like the kind of thing Texas state leaders would want to take a look at, but that's just me I guess.

That said, I've yet to meet any family with a kid itching to go to UAB, Louisiana, or Southern Miss, who I assume also offer a nice financial deal to bright Texan kids. Being in a dying conference with a nationally irrelevant football program will not be good for Tech as a university that exists to educate students, and I'm sure they're aware of that.

Or you could just give a guy a bag with a half mil in it and not worry about anything because you'll never get in trouble for breaking the rules.

There seems to be some growing belief that the numbers in the bag game have changed or something. “half a mil” was an entire budget most years for most of the bag game programs.

They all started screeching when NIL unlocked payrolls at wealthier fanbase programs, like Texas, Michigan and Notre Dame. They don’t suddenly have more bag game money than they did 5 years ago. That’s part of why I’m rolling my eyes about the bag game concerns.

There’s always going to be some chicanery in each cycle for a pittance of what players can now legally make because dark markets rarely totally disappear. There are still bootleggers selling moonshine, after all.

The bigger risks, in my mind at least, are institutional cheating through rev share scams and the newer NIL big swinging dicks not named Texas just continuing to do whatever the fuck they want to do and the NCAA/House clearinghouse police not doing a damned thing about it.

Well, their money spends just as well. And these kids I’m sure think all paths lead to the nfl, so how many of them can be legitimately sold on development and longer term earning potential?

The “Saban Discount” was real and it existed precisely because a number of the better recruits aren’t uninformed, blind idiots. These guys have all kinds of counsel around them and many of those around them are actually trying to help. Maybe not as altruists, maybe not always due to blood or love, but they’re there, giving guidance around the player’s future.

That is, of course, not all of the recruits and your point stands with a portion of them, just not even a majority, really.

From Spiegelman. Pretty easy to read between the lines here.

  Reveal hidden contents

Texas has been trending for the Temple(Texas) four-star EDGE since logging his official visit to the Forty Acres on June 6-8, which ultimately led to Carlton nixing his plans to return to Texas A&M the next weekend.

The Longhorns are fading in this one as July 10 nears. Baylor has usurped Texas as the team standing at the top — and Texas Tech has emerged as a legitimate contender late. Carlton officially visited Texas Tech in May and has continued to trend up in this recruitment after half a dozen trips to Lubbock since last spring.

“Texas Tech has stepped up a lot,” he told Rivals. “Regardless, they have always been there. They stay in touch every single day. They’re very consistent … Going down there to get the full experience, to see how they do everything, how everyone is in the locker room, how the players are … They vibe and they treat each other like family — on and off the field. Listening to the coaches, seeing how they coach, seeing how they develop people, and what they can do for me to turn me into a man … it benefited them a whole lot.”

The Red Raiders have plenty of traction to close strongly vs. Baylor here.

How is this dude borderline 5 stars if his top options are Baylor and TTU?

Imo seems like a safe bet. The NCAA hasn't been able to enforce anything in ages, I don't see that changing now just because a consulting firm is involved.

The one thing that’s different is that the actual Athletic Departments have money on the line and have to keep actual books. The power of the old bag system is that it was cheap and entirely outside the AD’s so they could simple play dumb and deny anything. Light is the best disinfectant, with both player mobility and legalizing pay people are going to way more willing to go on record and speak about that topic.  Coaches and fans can now openly complain about paying players and the media will discuss it.

Better educations?  Maybe maybe not. But those Texas schools you mentioned are viewed as regional commuter schools.  And for the most part they are.  Some kids want to get far away from home and want that university experience.

Fixed it for you and this entire NCAA/House clearinghouse is one of the biggest much ado about nothing things in recent years and only highlights how out of touch the supposed powers that be are about the issues facing college sports.

I don’t think any of these kids watched TT softball grind Canady into a fine powder over the course of a season and the wcws run. They hired her to play savior, and while it worked with her, guys not built that way are going to struggle. Like Hudson. Overworked, underdeveloped, and expected to carry a team. That gets ugly fast.

Which is why LSU is trying to sell jersey ads. The casinos and children’s hospitals must be tapped.

I've got a good friend who is a UT grad (MD) and met his wife (JD) on campus. They fully expected their kids to go to UT. All three went to Ole Miss. They had respectable if not top tier SATs but didn't grind through high school to have the stellar GPAs. Ole Miss made them all a good deal and once the first one went, it was easy for the next two. I think it's fairly well known those schools are targeting upper-middle class Texas kids thinking it will build their future alumni donor base beyond the Juniors and Bobby Sues in their own state.

The other footnote to this is the some of the private schools in the state (I am looking at you TCU and SMU) instead of being more generous in their scholarship offerings to these very kids instead have targeted those whose parents can pay full bill while the schools continue to raise costs.

One of the biggest issues TCU has had in building their alumni base is over the past couple of decades damn near all their grads are first generation TCU grads as kids of TCU families have been priced out of attending the school.

My brother didn't have Berkeley or UCLA grades and ended up choosing between Ole Miss and TCU for the big Southern sports experience instead of a lower end UC or high end Cal State school, it's happening across the big states.

This is exactly my issue...we are back to hoping other people will play by the "rules".  there were some rules before this of course, but now there are LIMITS that go with the rules.  I have no doubt all these fucks who are supposed to enforce the rules/limits will be completely toothless.

It will be up to Texas(and a few others) to start suing entities to keep fair play. Maybe Texas won't care enough to sue because the limits give a modicum of forward looking financial certainty to the University but to be clear, Bama, Aub, SMU, aggy, etc love the fuck out of this.

Side note, it's somewhat interesting that Auburn isn't doing fucking shit in recruiting right now.

sure, just listing known cheaters. forgot to add Oklahoma and LSU.  Oklahoma really might benefit from this but they've got other issues right now.

Good luck trying to get a job in Silicon Valley or Wall Street coming out of Ole Miss

I get the sentiment, but that's not the goal of a college education nor should it be. Thankfully, there's more to life than finance and tech. Lots of people have different callings and there are lots of decent jobs out there in lots of decent areas. I can't afford a White Lotus vacation but have been happy doing the work I do and making the tradeoffs I have made. Also, I've been able to get my kids through college and grad school without debt, so that's a win in life.

All that said, yeah, it's still Ole Miss, a provincial backwater of an institution still gripped by a racist past, though they are growing their Texas network.

Fuck off, Fred recruited great until the rest of the SWC decided to cheat their asses off.  Even when he first got the job and the pissed off Campbell for HC donors he recruited great.  That in spite of said donors calling up recruits like Anthony Carter and Joey Browner the night before they were going to commit to the Horns and talking shit about the program.

Fred was like 2 plays away from being a 2x national championship coach for us

We had a great year in ‘77, certainly overachieved with the QB situation, but I sat in the freezing Cotton Bowl, surrounded by ND assholes and watched them absolutely dismantle us, so any notion we were a play away from a national championship is not true.
