Slovenia will miss the Olympics next year.

Slovenia still can qualify next year in June euro tournament per ESPN.

from nbc article https://www.nbcsports.com/olympics/news/canada-basketball-olympics-fiba-world-cup#:

“Canada joins the U.S., which also qualified Sunday, as well as host nation France, Australia, South Sudan and Japan in the 12-team Olympic field. The top two European nations at the World Cup will also qualify, plus four more nations via the last-chance qualifying tournaments”

What other talented players were head-cases who were easy to provoke early in their careers? Hakeem? Iverson?

No one "provoked" Luka. He was just complaining to the refs all game.

The Brooks ejection was soft as Charmin by NBA rules. It looked like he was just talking shit to another player and they Ted him up. Guess you can't do that in FIBA.

Schroeder went 4-26 and they still won because the rest of the team shot 24-44 and 8-18 from deep? I mean even Game Seven 2010 Kobe is shaking his head at this one. I did not get to see this game, but seeing that line makes even Westbrook blush. That’s just incredible that the Germans overcame that to win. Did no one go to him and suggest to, oh I don’t know, stop shooting?!?!

Crazy how much better Schroeder is in international play.  I didn't watch, but looked at box score to see where the difference was.  It appeared to be an incredibly even game with neither team playing defense.  If there is one advantage for Germany, they had 5 or 6 more offense rebounds and thus more shots.

Once the game slowed down in the 4th it really favored the Germans. They were not going to be able to keep playing at the pace of the first three quarters.

Schroeder really plays incredibly well in international ball. Gotta give him the lion’s share of the credit for the win today as he played a great game. The final should be really good against Serbia.

FIBA calls Ts differently than NBA officials.  anything an individual player does gets attributed to the team.  so if player A has been talking trash all game and complaining then anything ANYONE on his team does can put them over the threshold for a tech to be called, even if that player was just subbed in to the game.

From the ESPN writeup:

Germany was simply able to get more chances to score because it often was able to get the ball back when it missed. The Germans pulled down 12 offensive rebounds, leading to 25 second-chance points (Team USA had eight).

I'm not sure it is true that US and Canada lost because of no big man. I think it had an effect, but Germany cut really well in moving without the ball and shot well. There offense rebound edge was about effort and not overwhelming size.

idk about Canada as I didn’t watch them.

We’ll see next summer what happens in the Olympics.

Germany wins it, but the Serbians made them earn it. Schroeder and Franz Wagner were brilliant today. Without Schroeder the Germans probably don’t make the quarterfinals. His ability to handle the rock for long stretches of the game was invaluable for them and it’s why he’s an elite point guard in the international game. Franz looks like he is taking that next step and is using this competition as a springboard for the upcoming season. He and his brother Moritz looked a lot better than their American teammate did in this competition. Kinda crazy to think that the Deutschland is now the World Champions in basketball.

I also think Isaac Bonga needs to be given another shot to make an NBA roster. There is no way that he can’t be at least somewhere between the 12-15th player on a roster. He’s just 23 (Even though he looks like he’s 35) and can play some really good on ball defense.

Brooks scores 39 and the US loses in OT to Canada. They had not medaled in the sport since Jesse Owens was blowing by nazis on the track in 1936. Quite the way to end the tournament.

Train wreck of a team. I’d keep Bridges, Ant, Hali, Reaves and Kessler for 2024. Fill the rest with defensive wings and bigs.

Unless it’s just gonna be Steph, lebron, KD etc for the Olympics for one last go around.

No idea how truthful this is...

The construction will be interesting. There are a ton of small guards who are seemingly interested (Kyrie, Lillard, Trae, Fox, Garland), but should you take more than one (Steph)? Those guys get targeted and bullied in high level FIBA. It probably makes more sense to roll with only Steph, and then have a bigger point like Halliburton or Jrue backing him up

In regards to which three centers you bring, that can't really be answered until you know Embiid and Davis's statuses. Bam should be on the team regardless. Draymond will probably be on the team since Kerr is the coach. If there's a spot open, you then look at JJJ (he's much better as a third center who you don't have to rely on heavy minutes for) or even Chet, who figures to be a great fit for FIBA if he progresses

Then you take two shooting/combo guards in Booker and Edwards, and fill in the rest with wings (KD, Lebron, Tatum, Bridges, Butler, PG, etc). You also consider Reaves since he's a ball mover who can shoot

A couple of wildcards are Zion, Kawhi, and Mobley

Not sure Fox’s outside shot/ game fits fiba

Guards: Steph, Trae, Booker, ant
Forwards: LBJ, KD, Tatum, Reaves
Centers: Brow?, Bam, Kessler, Dray?

The US needs big men on the roster that can shoot and defend. The Germans just showed us the roster construction you need to win. They did it with Schroeder handling the ball the majority of the time, but he had the Wagner brothers and Theis out there as well as another really solid big in Johannes Voightman. They were not your typical European squad and their size is going to be a headache again for the US if we don’t send guys who understand the international game.

Some Zach Lowe thoughts on the Olympics

- From this World Cup team, he'd take 2-3; definitely Bridges, probably Edwards, and maybe Halliburton (mentioned possibly Lillard instead)

- His priority would be to get Steph, KD, and Tatum on the team. Wants Steph as the offensive hub. Wands KD and Tatum's two-way shooting and defensive length

- Wants Jimmy Butler because he wants a hardass on the team

- Mentions that taking Draymond would mean leaving someone else off

- As under the radar guys, he'd like Desmond Bane and Brook Lopez to get a look. Talked about how JJJ did nothing at all on offense. Would love for Zion to get a look. De'Aaron Fox needs a look if he keeps getting better.

Banchero will be on the team. Youngest player on the roster by a year (IM 20!) and should take this experience and grow even more as a player in Year 2. Plus he revoked his Italian team eligibility to play for the good guys

He's by no means a lock, and if it weren't for the program blocking him from the Italian team, he probably wouldn't have been on the varsity squad this past time around

JJJ and Ingram were trainwrecks. Kessler just isn't good enough yet. The rest of the team wasn't bad for the most part. Even someone like Josh Hart would be decent on the Olympic squad (not that he'll make it). The other teams are getting really good and with the 3 point shooting volume you're going to get upsets and weird finalists in a single elim tourney more frequently.

I agree that Paolo deserves a spot.

Just don’t see fox translating well to fiba. I haven’t looked at everybodys stats but off the eye test ant shot like absolute trash from 3 despite being a pretty good nba 3 point shooter. Reaves and Hali seemed to be the only ones who could hit consistently, bridges finally caught on late. What’s fox going to contribute if he can’t shoot 3s in the nba at an avg clip?

Rim pressure, similar to what Schroder did all tournament

I’d go with Halliburton though

Schroeder wound up being the MVP of the tournament and deservedly so. Taking out his horror show game in the quarters he was the leader for The Deutschland and seems to take a lot of pride in that. He is the ideal point guard in FIBA basketball. He is what every country needs in a floor general. It really is pretty cool how he takes control of the Germans when he he has the ball in his hands. Germany will be better in the Olympics if Kleber play.  Playing far closer to home in Paris will also be big for the Weltmeister.

I am still not sure Fox would fit the profile of what you want in that style of play. Curry is even at his age the kind of player that can play well despite no experience with the FIBA game.  When 35 feet is your range you can be on the court despite defensive limitations. His relationship with Kerr will be a big plus for him, especially if they bring Draymond aboard. When Curry is on he’s the most dangerous guard in the game. Halliburton would be someone to have, especially with the experience in the World Cup. The US needs some continuity. Reaves needs to be brought back and given a bigger role.

Reaves got roasted defensively against the good teams they played. Maybe he makes the team as the 12th guy, but I don’t see the argument for giving him a bigger role

I don’t disagree with his defensive deficiencies. However, there was not a whole lot of cohesiveness to much of what the team did defensively. Reaves is a guy that plugs into a team based defensive scheme better than a guy who you can isolate on someone and know they aren’t going to score. I’ll take his shot making and find someone who can play that backline and be cool with that.

The US needs continuity and he showed he can score and if given an actual big man behind him a lot of those deficiencies are covered. Having the JJJ Experience behind him as the last line of defense was a nightmare. He should never put the uniform on ever again.
