I think the Mannings trust Sark and are not helicopter parents. But I also very very much think they are worried about Arch taking shots, and have been worried this whole time about concussions.

Well, the play where he got his bell rung he dove head first, so maybe they need to talk to Arch about that and not Sark.  He does seem to slide more often than he did before, but on that play he put his head out there for the double whammy.

…and he damn well should have. None of the three NFL players in his advisory circle would have done anything different in that situation…

Explain.  1st and 10, and he's gained 8-9.  Is that extra yard worth losing your QB?

You know they don’t have that yellow line on the field, right?

Any competitive QB would have taken whatever they could get in that situation…

I keep asking myself how he didn't know that 22 was going to drill him in the head and concuss him.  He's such a dumb ass for not knowing this.

Similar to Skattebo yesterday.  If he just quit running the route he probably doesn't get hurt.

Nah fuck that it’s overtime

and also sometimes the best way to protect yourself is get down by a dive forward

you slide (correctly) you need to start the slide early and they only give you 6-7 yards

you slide late and you get blasted even worse and the guy maybe gets penalized and kicked out of the game but you get destroyed

He made the right decision to dive instead of slide. IMO QBs should all be taught to dive instead of sliding. When you slide you are putting trust in your opponents to layoff. If you slide and they late hit you it’s an automatic concussion with a way more severe collision to the head.

I think Arch made a terrible decision, and it's 50/50 he'll play against Vandy.  If he doesn't play, we'll lose.  Really bad decision.  The idea that he has a BIGGER chance of getting concussed if he slides is nuts.  Surly gonna surly.

You’ve clearly never seen the aftermath of a late hit after a slide ending up with an unconscious QB

What does that have to do with anything?  If a QB starts to slide the defense is coached to back off.  If they hit him anyway it's a personal foul if not targeting.  The MSU guy should have gotten hit with targeting anyway.

That. Play. Was. Not. Targeting.

That's certainly not my main argument, but there was helmet to helmet.  It's very clear in real time that the helmet collision forced Arch to the ground.

That doesn’t mean it’s targeting. And watch the other angle. There really wasn’t helmet to helmet.

The concussion came from the ground not from the defender

Seems to me that Arch's head gets pushed down and then bounces off the turf.  It's not just body contact.  Man, I don't care, it's far from the most egregious non-call ever even if it was wrong.  My main point is that he should have slid (slud?  slided?).

You’re dying on this hill and it is weird. It’s football and blaming Arch for that play is ridiculous.

Dizzy Dean said slud all the time when he announced baseball.

Nope!

That would be Sir Peter Gardere who's the only Texas QB to start and go 4-0 against Mobilehoma.

Mobilehoma fans, those that were left in the Cotton Bowl, chanted, "GRAD-U-ATE! GRAD-U-ATE!" as Peter jogged off the field for the last time.  Lulz.

They said the same thing at the Disch after he blasted a HR.  Dude was a dual sport baller.

This opinion might be worse than the bullshit you’re spewing over in the Sark thread. It’s clear you’ve never played a down of football in your life.

I remember his HRs.

He was an all-district catcher/1st-baseman at Houston Lee high school.

Darrick Duke also played both sports, too, on the same Texas football/baseball teams with Gardere. Darrick was so fast he was automatic stealing bases.

Peter also almost ran over my freshman roommate with his car, barreling down the hill on 21st Street from Speedway down to Memorial Stadium.  Lulz.

Watch the play instead of looking a still from the zapruder film. It’s not a helmet to helmet hit.

Just go watch the play. The defender leads with his shoulder into arch’s upper back. Any helmet contact is incidental.

you are quite wrong.  it was definitely targetting.  manning was on the ground, defenseless, and hit on his helmet with the crown of another helmet.  targetting.

He was not on the ground. He was falling to ground but was not down when hit.

Are we pulling a Mateer thumb psy op with Arch. Can we announce brain surgery today. Have Arch come out in an American revolution head bandage on Saturday with a little monkey blood stain.
If Arch can play and pull off the win against Diego “Marcus Aurelius” Pavia, we will erect statues in his honor and he will forever be remembered as Dominus Augustus Archibald Manning

As explained by the referee analyst in another game, if you lead with the helmet on a defenseless player, it's targeting no matter where on the body. Look how low the tackler has to come in to make that kind of contact. I thought it was targeting while watching. I think the refs in the booth blew it.

He definitely hit him with his helmet. It was a football play, and not malicious imo, but his helmet hit him in the back of helmet.

Contact was made shoulder to back. He led with shoulder into arch’s back.

Has to be the crown of the helmet, correct?

Screw all the analysts and talking heads who often get it wrong:

Targeting and Making Forcible Contact With the Crown of the Helmet

ARTICLE 3. No player shall target and make forcible contact against an opponent with the crown of their helmet. The crown of the helmet is the top segment of the helmet; namely, the circular area defined by a 6-inch radius from the apex (top) of the helmet. This foul requires that there be at least one indicator of targeting (See Note 1 below). When in question, it is a foul. (Rule 9-6) (A.R. 9-1-3-I)

Targeting and Making Forcible Contact to Head or Neck Area of a Defenseless Player

ARTICLE 4. No player shall target and make forcible contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent (See Note 2 below) with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulder. This foul requires that there be at least one indicator of targeting (See Note 1 below). When in question, it is a foul (Rules 2-27-14 and 9-6). (A.R. 9-1-4-I-VI) Note 1: “Targeting” means that a player takes aim at an opponent for purposes of attacking with forcible contact that goes beyond making a legal tackle or a legal block or playing the ball. Some indicators of targeting include but are not limited to:

• Launch. A player leaving their feet to attack an opponent by an upward and forward thrust of the body to make forcible contact in the head or neck area.

• A crouch followed by an upward and forward thrust to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area, even though one or both feet are still on the ground.

• Leading with helmet, shoulder, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area. • Lowering the head before attacking by initiating forcible contact with the crown of the helmet.

There are two different rules, "defenseless player" and generally.  Defenseless player is more complex, the general rule is you can't hit someone with the crown of the helmet, anywhere.  Defenseless or not.
