I guess those Baja bandits have poisoned the well for surfers who needed some tasty waves and a cool buzz who won't go looking at that wave and saying, "Hey bud, let's party!" anymore.

They’ll find the responsible parties. Hell, the cartels may find them and take care of them themselves. Nobody wants this kind of press there. They need the tourist $$.

Yeah, we often forget that not all crime in Mexico is drug-related.  Sometimes it's just violent dumbfucks robbing people over inane crap.  Just like in the U.S.  But this is bad for business and invites a lot of unwanted law enforcement attention from Mexico, the U.S, and now even Australia.  Lots of people with lots of budget asking lots of questions during vacation season.  As Hate said, there's an 80% chance these guys get involved in what will appear to be an internal fight amongst themselves over the loot, or some kinda murder-suicide tryst.

None of these man are making it through the summer alive.

Sucks as that area isn't too far from me and I'd like to check it out.

Feels like a crime of opportunity and desperation.  However, makes me want to visit just a bit less.

They’ve already been arrested. Doesn’t sound like it’s cartel related, looks like it was a group of 3 possibly part of a gang that had been going around carjacking people in the area recently. Some of the locals are upset because they say they’ve complained about this gang before yet the police never did anything about them until this happened.

Killed because the thieves wanted the truck tires.

Before we start casting stones, in 2022 there was a random killing on Padre Island of a Utah couple. The murderous thieves wanted the Utah couple's RV camper to flee to Mexico.

Shit happens everywhere.

Yeah, believe it or not----Mexico has crime that is not cartel related.  We need the law dogs to weigh in here...but attorneys or even government consulates from USA/AUS are gonna start poking around while these fellas are in custody.  That's not good for tourism.  That's not good for anybody.  And it's certainly not good for their personal well-being while guests of the Mexican Law Enforcement community...

Yea I think they were on the run for murder already….  I wouldn’t go camping in PINs without a gun, many stories over the years of people on the run hiding out there.

This is the reason I do not tent camp in East St. Louis.

The 82nd Airborne would need an escort of Marines through East St. Louis when we lived at Jefferson Barracks 70 years ago.

Is this gonna be a good time to check the rates for all-inclusive resorts at Isla Mujeres? Why, yes - yes it is.

My son’s favorite resort for the past several years in Cancun is Excellence Playa Mujeres.

Entrance to PINS is under constant video surveillance. Probably one of the worst places to hide out.

Met some real nutters down there though. But kind of a lot work to get down there and do criming.

No guns for me.

I can't be the only one picturing Armybrat in one of these chairs with a sun-burned face, mumbling, "I said no salt.  No salt in the margaritas.  I won't be leaving a tip.  I could shut this whole resort down.  I could take my traveler's checks to a competing resort.  I could write a letter to your board of tourism and have this place condemned.  I could put strychnine in the guacamole.  There was salt on the rim of the margaritas glass.  Bit grains of salt."

Enseneda and IM are on complete opposite ends of the country.

That's like expecting lower airbnb rates in Maine after a bunch of murders in San Diego.

Yeah camping on a remote beach in Mexico is asking for trouble.

Need to find where I saw this but apparently the guys did not want to pay to park at some campsite so instead they went to private land and that may have been their demise.

  • All beaches are public in Mexico. These guys were camping/surfing on a remote beach, but it was not private property. There's a dirt road that goes right to it.
  • The shitbags who killed them were part of a known group of thieves who just wanted their tires
  • Those shitbags used illegal guns to murder the surfers. For some reason, those shitbags ignored Mexican law. The surfers, who obeyed Mexican law and didn't carry illegal guns, were unable to defend themselves.

I'll see if I can find it, but no one is questioning that we are dealing with shitbags.

You overestimate

1.) The average American's geographical knowledge

2.) The average American's ability to logically see "Mexico Murders!1!1" and not connect that to the entire country and possibly The Valley too just to be safe.

I was heading down to Oaxaca around the time of the killings/kidnapping in Matamoros and had 2 different people ask me if I was going to cancel my trip.

Sure, but that was pre-internet. Nowadays, any smart traveler or concerned friend/relative can look at an online map, read hotel/area reviews and check status on FB groups.

Most don't, but it's a resource now. I just saw a post on one of my Cozumel groups from some cruise ship mutant who asked if it was safe to get off the cruise ship in Cozumel....after those murders in Baja Norte. Most of the replies were "Please don't come to Cozumel. Ever."

And I partied in Matamoros over spring break twice during the killings/kidnappings. We all thought we were bulletproof.

First, all the dumbasses (not here) who worry about Cancun or Isla when something happens in Baja.  Ask them if they're cancelling their trip to Disneyland 'cause you heard about that grisly murder in St. Louis?

Take it all with a grain of salt 'cause reddit but some interesting comments...

From what I’ve read it’s likely it happened at Punta San Jose on Saturday night. NOT K38, where there’s service and tons of people around. Bad info doesn’t help anyone. PSJ is somewhat remote, no service 45mins down a dirt road an hour south of Ensenada/ That spot isn’t safe to camp at and is known for tweakers robbing & carjacking campers. Their last known location was San Miguel Saturday morning. Phone was found in Maneadero, which is south Ensenada and not the nicest area. The Mexican news post I saw said the woman arrested with one of their phones was caught with half a pound of meth.

another person

Have camped at PSJ several times. Pretty remote area at the end of a long dirt road. Live in Mexico part-time and have heard multiple first hand accounts of people getting robbed out there at gun point. Lots of tweaker & sketchy activity, nails in tires, etc. Definitely not a safe place to camp anymore and so tragic that these guys didn’t have that information.

more

Never ever open camp in Mexico over night, maybe at a designated gated campground like K-58 but generally it is a big no-no. You always want to stay in well travelled areas at night in Baja.

Especially south of Ensenada, it's exrememly rural south of La Bufadora (Coast is 10 miles away from Highway 1 that goes to Cabo), no services only small villages. Especially at night....

I've always wanted to check the area out but it's known to be sketch any you are truly on your own if you get in trouble.

Anyway, more here.  Seems like quite a few people knew Calllum.

Clearly the answer is to abolish all laws, since criminals don’t follow them anyway.
