That's why I said next year. That is giving him grace.

He said earlier that he'd prefer Russell Westbrook over Chris Paul on the Rockets so maybe lower your expectations.

I don't care if we lose every game the rest of the season, I won't miss RT.

In fact that always just pisses me off. Tom Herman loses to Maryland and "Miss Charlie Strong yet??". Um, no. One has nothing to do with the other.

I'm just kidding around friends. I also do not miss RT. I had higher hopes for this squad, though.

Thought it was odd on Wednesday when Lowell made a point to mention RT was in the building.

It’s year one and he inherited scraps and had to pull pieces from the portal to form a patchwork team … the only real WTF so far has been the lack of a ball handling guard on the roster … no idea if we competitively offered several portal PGs and they just ended up going to other places but if we didn’t throw chips at some serviceable PGs and thought Mark and Pope could fill that role that’s a huge evaluation fuckup already

I can blame Miller for Traore. He recruited him from Xavier, so he knew what he was getting. And that is a one trick rebounding pony.

I don’t mind a backup big who can rebound so long as we didn’t overpay and we aggressively tried to fill the gaping hole at PG

Especially when you consider that he didn't often seem to be while actually our coach.

Is that the look he was always making on the sidelines? With all squinting?

"Huh where AM I?!?!?!?"

having a defense this bad with a schedule this weak does not portend success for conference play.

our 101st ranked defense is the second worst unit in the sec thus far, bested (worsted?) only by OU’s 116yh ranked defense. teams like bama and vandy will drop 100 on us. 11 teams in this league have top 50 offenses. if miller doesn’t figure something out soon it’s going to be an especially rough year for this team and program.

This is not a good defensive squad. Not good individually. Not good defensively as a team. It is staggering how bad our perimeter defense is in particular.  Our guards don't play tight 1:1 defense, they don't fight through screens, and our bigs are basically worthless perimeter help defenders.

Pope and Wilcher are particularly noteworthy bad defenders.  Weaver provides hustle, but isn't really a very good individual defender either.  Mark can play decent defense... when motivated.  Half the time there is a 3, it seems to be in the face of Vokietaitis who is failing to close out.

Add it all up and our 3P% defense is #287 in the country.  And our ability to create steals and turnovers is #303 and #283 in the country.  Horrid, horrid defensive work from our guards.

When I hear Pope say that "we will do better", I want to see him start by putting in effort on the defensive end.  Our guards are 6'2, 6'3, 6'4 and 6'5 and have plenty of athleticism.  Weaver should be able to lock down the best opposing guard.  Same with Wilcher. They should be smothering.  Nope nope nope.

We're gonna get our taints handed to us in conference play aren't we

I don’t think we will win or anything but the team seems headier, longer, more organized.

other than the ASU loss the record is basically as expected.  we weren't beating Duke, UConn, or Virginia.  we were at least a bit competitive with Duke and UConn

I don't think we will know a lot until about 6 games into the conference schedule.

I know it is a little thing but I continue to be stunned Miller can't get Heide open for some 3's with some called plays.

I'd take both of RT's teams over these losers.

If there's one thing my time on this board has taught me it's that it's never that bad or good.

Alright well entertain the idea that it might be that bad.

I was only able to watch the first half last night.  Did we really hang with them in the 2nd half or was UConn on cruise control?

we shot a million ft’s in the 2h and uconn didn’t. if swain (84% ft shooter) didn’t miss a bunch of those 2H ft’s we might have stayed in the game a bit longer.

we seemed to hang around that 8-12 pt deficit most of the second half, and then we were down 5 with about 4 mins to go and swain was shooting fts. he missed em both and they piled on a couple of threes in quick succession, and that was the end of it.

I have to give Miller a pass for this year.  He was hired late in the recruiting cycle last year.  Last I checked, next year’s recruiting class is ranked 7th on Rivals.  Like it or not, Texas basketball is just not a destination job.  Hopefully, he gets the NIL resources he needs to compete w/ the top programs (I’m not sure where UT ranks on that front), and we’ll see where Miller Texas basketball is at in 2 seasons

Bullshit. Beard had to bring in 9 players to field a team and I'd take that squad all day long over this years version. Odom was hired at UVA within 2 days of Miller this spring, and he brought in 10 players that kicked our squad's ass by 19 in Austin. It was a shit talent evaluation by Miller thinking we could play without anybody that even remotely resembles a point guard.

we have three shooting guards coming in so far, and maybe one of them will be ready to have a real impact next year. the portal is going to be where we build our team, and as of now, roster construction seems to be a hugely important but highly questionable aspect of miller’s time here. i’m not sure who from this team will return as an impact payer, and again, we won’t be able to depend on the freshmen. it’s fair to look ahead and ask, “how does this team end up being competitive next year?”

no pg and no shooters was a bold choice.

Never liked the hire, still don’t. I miss the days of enjoying our basketball games. These are just brutal to watch

i’d forgotten about this post until someone repped it yesterday. reading it again 8-9 months later and it’s like, “yeah; he is who we thought he was.” disheartening.

I'm willing to give Miller a couple of years before I fully judge him, but he is off to a pretty weak start.  He is recruiting well, and those recruits will take some time to develop.  Mainly I want to see improvement through the year, and from year to year.  As long as that improvement continues, I can be patient.  He has done a very poor job of building excitement among the fanbase though.

Saint Beard is 6-4 at Ole Miss in year 3, so it isn't like he has built an absolute juggernaut there. I can agree that his first squad at UT looked better than this one, but that team had All Big-12 Andrew Jones and Courtney Ramey returning, plus Febres who had 60 starts... which is vastly better than what Miller returned.  And they still managed to lose 12 games and beat literally nobody better than Stanford in Nov/Dec.

This year was a full rebuild and we added some decent upside multi-year players in Vokietaitis (SO), Wilcher (SO), Duru (FR) and John Clark (Redshirt). Heide (JR) should also return.  And add to that:

  • Austin Goosby, SG - #27 National Recruit - 4-star
  • Bo Ogden, SF - #37 National Recruit, 4-star
  • Joe Sterling, SG - #105 National Recruit, 4-star

If he does well in the portal, we could have an improved squad.  If he doesn't, then we will be bottom half of the SEC or worse.

On the plus side, next year will be a good year to get better season tickets because interest in the program is absolutely dead.

In hindsight, Texas should have let Tramon Mark walk. I had hope after his short tourney sample at PG, but we should have known better.  He is really an undersized SF, which we don't need with Swain.  But he wants to be a guard, so Miller should have known that this could only end badly and cut bait.

Pope will also never be a point guard. He is an undersized SG gunner who isn't even a very good shooter. His defense is poor. His passing is poor. His movement without the ball is poor.  He probably has a spot on the team, but no more than 20 mpg max.

Weaver will also never be a point guard.  He should be a 15 mpg change of pace, disruptor.

Bottom line, these 3 are all out of eligibility after this year, so it isn't even like they will get much development.  I would have much rather gotten some upside freshman / sophomore true guards, even if it meant we only won 10 games this year but built for the future.

analogs i’d prefer to have over our current players:

javan felix > pope

demarcus holland > weaver

tevin mack > mark

brock cunningham > heide

prince ibeh > traore

andrew jones > wilcher

so basically we have swain, vok, and some version of the above former players. yeah, that’s not great. it’s not great for this year, and it doesn’t bode particularly well for next year either.
