Kid Rock should never be mentioned in the same breath as Rage Against the Machine.

Not going to lie, Kid Rock is in my top 10 rodeo shows of all time.

Trade deadline stories from ESPN/2017 Astros:

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45661110/mlb-trade-deadline-2025-gms-best-stories-deals-fell-rumors

Quote

'All he said was "No, I don't want to trade him." No reason. Just "No!" I couldn't believe it'

Jim Duquette and Mike Flanagan were the co-GMs of the Baltimore Orioles in 2006 and the duo was working hard on a July deal involving slugger Miguel Tejada after getting permission from ownership to trade him.

"We spent like 16-hour days sorting through the level of interest," Duquette recalled. "We had it narrowed down to three teams: the Mets, Astros and Angels. I mean we worked hard on this deal."

The duo determined the Angels had the best offer.

"It was a significant trade," Duquette said. "We had a chance to get Bartolo Colon and Erick Aybar or even Ervin Santana. It would have changed our organization."

When they were ready, Duquette and Flanagan marched down to owner Peter Angelos' law office to present the offers and their suggestions to him.

"I had a whiteboard," Duquette explained. "We put down all of the names on it. It was a whole elaborate presentation to Peter. We're up against the deadline. We sat there for 30 minutes going through all the options.

"At the end of it, he pauses, looks up at us both and all he said was, 'No, I don't want to trade him.' No reason. Just 'No!' I couldn't believe it."

A few years later, Duquette had a laugh at his cousin Dan's expense when nearly the same thing happened to him. In 2017, the Cubs and Astros were both vying to trade with Baltimore for reliever Zack Britton. Dan was now the Orioles' general manager and was fielding offers.

"Theo [Epstein] opted out of the running for Britton," Jim Duquette recalled. "He didn't want to wait around for Peter [Angelos]. The Astros rolled the dice and waited. And Peter said no to that too. They got stuck with nobody. If you remember, one of their players even criticized ownership for doing nothing but that's only because Angelos said no at the last minute."

I guess JV worked out

Jake can’t go to the DL yet. First he has to be misdiagnosed by the Astros medical staff and they can put him on the DL a few days later when he sees an actual medical doctor who doesn’t prescribe leeches.

Baseball Gods:  We're gonna make you the best developers of pitchers in the game.

Also Baseball Gods: Your team is not only going to experience frequent injuries, but your medical staff will further imperil those guys.

I was thinking about this trade the other day when shaking my head in disbelief about the plethora of LH options currently in our bullpen.  Wasn't that long ago when we were all in on Britton because Tony Sipp was the only lefty in the pen.  Instead of giving up Moran and a couple of farm arms, we had to trade Teoscar for Liriano to get another lefty.  I guess it was worth it since he recorded an out in Game 7.

That is fucking awesome.  In honor of the 50th anniversary, I would have gone with the Jaws analogy:

"Mr. Manfred, what we are dealing with here is a perfect engine, a Dodger-beating machine. It's really a miracle of evolution. All this machine does is pitch and hit and make little pitchers and hitters, and that's all. Now, why don't you take a long, close look at this second baseman. [gestures to 5'5" Altuve] Those proportions are correct."

I’ve been looking back at the Astros deadline deals and we gave up the controllable years for Teoscar, Hader, Wilyer and Siri for guys that didn’t really make a difference in the ultimate outcome. In some cases, they were actually detrimental (C. Gomez and the fucking rat).

The Astros obviously won some deadline deals as well and incredibly didn’t give up anything of value for the first Verlander, Yordan, Grienke and Pressly trades.

As they approach the trade deadline this year, I hope they don’t look at any of these deals for a JAG. If the guys a real difference maker, then go for it, but otherwise I would rather they keep what’s in the system. Also, I doubt we have enough value in our system to get any player who would play assuming some of the Astros on the IL come back.

The rat can die of gonorrhea and rot in hell for is post-Astro antics, but he deserves his flowers for the contributions to the 2017 team.  It's an uncomfortable fact that Fiers led the staff in innings and kept the team afloat during the regular season while Keuchel, McCullers, Musgrove, Morton, and McHugh all had significant stints on the IL.

Now imagine Dusty was still around and all the subs were in the lineup spot of the player they were replacing.  Oh look, some guy named Short is leading off tonight and Trammell is hitting 3rd.

Loperfido just got called up and played in his first MLB game in 2025  yesterday.

he’d probably be among the team leaders in starts if he were still on this Astros team.

Yep - I view the Kikuchi and the second Verlander trades as incomplete to this point. The 24 team probably doesn’t make the playoffs without Kikuchi but he didn’t even start a playoff game.

I used to feel more strongly (in agreement with you) on this, and yes, he played a key part in stabilizing the rotation the first half of the year. But he finished the season 8-10, with a 5.22 ERA and -0.5 WAR.

yes his first half stats were more than serviceable: 5-4, 3.84 ERA

And maybe this was before the Astros current plug-and-play pitching machine was fully ramped up and there were no viable alternatives waiting in the wings (Francis Martes, David Paulino played the role of Gordon, Walter, gusto that year). so yeah, it was nice to have a guy able to give you 5-6 IP every 5th day.

But the Astros won the West by 21 games, and finished 8 games ahead of the 3 seed.
it’s not like he was the difference in anything the team accomplished in the regular season.

So pissed Hinch laid over in that last series against the worst team in the history of the sport.

I got shit for saying it but I wanted no part of Detroit and Skubal in a best of 3 series

Some injury updates:
- Garcia threw 2 innings today in rehab start in FCL, striking out 4 and allowing 1 hit/ run.
- McCormick will join  Triple-A in OKC tomorrow.
- Meyers feels better, but Espada wants to stay away from him today.
- Javier threw 2 innings of live BP

Has there been any update on Dubin since he went down?

Alvarez and McCormick are doing leg exercises on the field, Dubin is throwing and Dezeno, Rodgers and Melton are playing catch.
