I tend to be a cynic about these things, but man when that song kicked in at the end I felt the emotions running. It’s probably a parent thing, I guess.

I think hope is the right word.

im not even a parent myself... but i was watching with my AA spouse, GenZ AA step-granddaughter, and her PR girlfriend. i mean...just bang on, man, whatever the feeling. it was quite something and i just enjoyed the fuck out of it! 😁

I am not a parent, but the ending felt hopeful because of what we saw during the film. We got a good look at what America is and is becoming as far as fascism and hate taking hold, but I did leave feeling hopeful for something better. This film did a great job intertwining our current situation with the story. This movie hit me pretty good. I have zero to add that would be negative because not one part of the film left me feeling like it missed the mark. Best film I have watched since my favorite movie of all-time, Jojo Rabbit, came out in October of 2019.

I felt like the living situation was pretty easy to understand, especially in 2025 in America. There was some definite middle finger going towards the government there with what his character was doing.

The living situation is understandable certainly. It was a very small issue but at the time I sensed a disconnect in location and style of that very industrial building compared to the house in the forest where Bob and Willa lived. I forget the term for when characters in a film or tv show are suddenly in a different location that wouldn't be possible in reality. But like that.

It might be suspension of disbelief. One film I can recall that being the case is my favorite Christmas movie, Christmas Vacation. Clark works in the city, lives in the suburbs and then he’s in the Rockies looking for a Christmas tree.

Saw this, very little understanding of what it is other than PTA and people are bitching about woke (but they do that about literally everything). Loved it, goddamn. Had to piss for an hour, waited. One small detail is I loved the guy driving the van after the bank scene. He captured that feeling perfectly. Finding out time.

Last weekend I asked someone if they were a member of the Christmas Adventurers Club. They said "no" but not very convincingly.

I had the thought that this is going to end up coming up on Surly.

I think the closest you could probably get to that in real life is Portland. It gets woodsy pretty quickly once you leave Portland proper. But, it's obviously entirely fictitious in the movie. The Texas Dip where they shot the car chase is in San Diego county.

You obviously have never spent time in the foothill villages of Crystal Lake and Woodstock which are NW of Chicago.

I'm still stewing on my thoughts, but what a rich experience.  It's just so welcome to have a film chock full of ideas.

I was trying to place PTA in the pantheon of filmmakers, and one thing I think he does better than anyone else consistently is endings.  A lot of that is the ride leading up to it, but his super-power is wrapping it up.

I thought it was odd that they made perfidia a rat who directly got her comrades killed in the interest of saving her own skin.  seemed out of line with her character.

I don’t know your familiarity with progressive politics, and I’m not CR-ing, but the core rule of the left is “don’t name names.” But it’s never really been true, or at best, it’s a guideline, not a rule(see Kazan, Elia).  To me Perfida followed a long line of left wing radicals who talked the talk, walked the walk…right up until she was staring down the barrel of life prison.

Putting aside the above, Perfida’s activism was more about the action being the juice (to paraphrase Heat) than any true political ideology.

When she was leaving Bob, she said she always put herself first. Snitching was an example of that. I think she liked the rush of everything she was doing with the rebels, and when that was gone and the reality of having a kid hit her, she bounced.

I mean, I thought it was the rule in every revolutionary group or gang; they just say "snitches get stitches" instead.

I don't get the hype.  I thought it was heavy-handed to the point of silliness and pretty boring outside of the bank robbery and the chase at the end (and even that was ruined by Leo having no problem rolling to a gentle stop short of the other cars).

What the hell, why would you tell people your spouse and step-granddaughter are in Alcoholics Anonymous?

Edit: and her girlfriend is in public relations? Why would you tell people that?

I know, African-American and Puerto Rican, but for a brief moment I laughed when I thought it was about alcholo

I thought Perfidia’s character was consistent throughout.

Spoiler

Her being self serving and addicted to the rush rather than some genuine die hard steady as a rock adherent to the cause (like benicio) was there through the whole first part. Also reinforced as not atypical by the more casually less strong other members of the group who got a chance to flip - white dude, Afro pussy. I assume it was obvious and I missed it or maybe just obvious by her walking out, but do we know if what’s her face saved her skin at the nunnery?

You’re generally correct, but naming names is a throwback to McCarthism.

The marketing has been odd. The uniformed probably think this another remake of Man on Fire.

Nailed it.

Wife and I went this morning.  We lasted 15 minutes into the actual film, and bailed.

We were guilty of exactly your notion.  Saw Leo and Benicio in the trailer and wanted to see it.  96% on RT. Should have read up on it more.  Just not our thing.

My read on it was that the true revolutionary was that Regina Hall’s character was the one truly committed to the cause and was included as a counterpoint to Perdidia’s actions.

15 minutes in you really didn’t know what it was.

At that point we absolutely knew what it was, thus, the exit. I deliberately don't read up on movies in which I am interested. Basically knew the stars and the RT rating and that's it. Yes, there's a bit of risk there in the cost of a movie ticket.  Not the end of the world.

Also;

I LOLed at Sean Penn's pipe for a boner and how everyone is just super hot for an otherwise average chick.  Just can't control themselves.

goddamn!  I knew the bounty hunter looked familiar but I couldn’t place him.  he was Uncas in the last of the mohicans.
