Hat tip to @TejasPedro for the new title inspiration.

Depends on the player, and the asking price. Moore by all accounts was a great teammate. Worked hard. But I’d also argue we overpaid for what we got from him LAST year. What you’re describing is what I think happens all over…typically just before they enter the portal. See Black, Kobe.

The “great teammate” shit is debatable. By all accounts, Texas helped Moore pack this time around. I don’t think he’d be coming back unless maybe for free.

Was the first to practice last to leave stuff bullshit? I can absolutely see how the staff was happy to tell him to fuck off after holding a gun to their head for multiple seasons. But I thought he was a good locker room guy.

@someguy implied earlier the money went to his head this season

Sounds like Deandre Moore is finding out the hard way what his fair market value is. Picking the right agent is going to be pretty important to players going forward.

What’s the market for a kid who barely played, had one good game, and has already had a torn Achilles?

Until some changes are made, the new paradigm is the teams that want to win don’t pay for potential, they pay for proven production. And the potential guys go prove it at lesser schools like Kentucky and then shop for the payday.

And my edit points were made by the two following posts first.

Yeah I make that trade, 10 times out of 10.

A year at Panhandle State to get good game tape and a payout in '27 would be the play I would suspect

In this era dollars have to go to proven production, not potential. I’m not sure how we will ever keep a guy like Clark around on the roster now.

The staff is probably best positioned to know if that trade is worth it, but my default preference is to hold onto the guy we have unless we know he can’t get it done. Rather deal with the known flaws of a player on our roster than bet on the unknown, unless there’s a clear reason to move on.

Odd dates on both accounts and a bit early...

Yup, having a daughter at Bama it has been an irritant to me that they go back this early.

He is asking for a lot of money while being unproven. That is the conundrum he has put us in. Blame his agent.

What exactly is “unknown” about Hollywood Smothers?

it’s important to also understand that Clark had one good game, and has now demanded rb1 money because he knew the staff was over a barrel at his position. I don’t want to lose Clark, but he has clearly taken classes at the Deandre Moore school of negotiating. As has already been posted, and as Tre wisner illustrated:

image.gif

Speaking of Tre Wisner, Nole fans and writers are thrilled about how the Portal's going for them!

Moore's leaving was addition by subtraction. Mediocre player who had established his ceiling and it simply wasn't very high. He was going to go from being a feature target in our offense to being somewhat deep on the bench ideally which made no sense for him, not even considering the money, so I never begrudged his leaving.

I view his departure in the same way I did Lefau. Not a bad player by any means but someone we shouldn't have had much trouble upgrading from in the portal.

If I was 3x, I would anticipate that I would be packing shortly.

I like it - guys who stay in their lane remain on the roster and get paid. Guys who renegotiate get treated to the real world where their demands get met or they are sent packing and replaced by someone better.

It's crazy that we had six scholarship RBs on the roster in August, and Simon might be the only one to return for the 2026 season.

If we're looking at a depth chart of Brown, Smothers, Cooper, Simon, Terry, Big Freshman White Guy.... Do we hold tight there? We'd need Cooper or Terry to be the "big back".

These players/agents that think loyalty from a team will get them above market value, while displaying no loyalty of their own to the team, are learning the hard way. Texas doesn’t underpay from what I can tell. So trying to gaslight that Texas doesn’t value you and you will go somewhere that does only works if you get your price elsewhere. Has that happened yet to any of these guys? When does the learning happen?

A year removed from major injury, one good game and he thinks the market will pay him RB1 money? The only team that would have is Texas and that’s not going the way he hoped. Now he will go to Baylor or Kentucky for half of what he asked I’m guessing.

Blame doesn’t really figure into my thinking. Im just talking about how to best allocate our resources.

character, how he’ll fit in the locker room, chemistry with the staff, etc. You can look at his tape to learn about his game, but that doesn’t tell you much about him off the field.

But as I said, I don’t have any reason to believe those things are a problem nor am I saying it’s a bad trade off. Just that I prefer the devil I know, all things being equal.

We will hold tight. Sark usually only plays 3 or so guys if those guys are producing. And for the record, our running back room is light years ahead of where we were last year.

Terry is a Tweener WR. He’s never going to be a “big back” the way you’re implying. Unless by big you just mean Tall. Think Lil’Jordan Humphrey.

Character? Locker room fit? NTTIAWRT, but that’s the gayest shit I’ve seen typed in awhile.

Jokes aside, I’ll answer seriously; a rb who screams Me First in the locker room when he knows he can leverage the staff isn’t exactly projecting High Character vibes to the rest of the locker room. He’d better be Xavier worthy level contribution to pull that shit off.

Yeah, I've been thinking about this a lot this week. Under past paradigms, you'd roll with guys like Christian Clark and Zina Umeozulu and Bo Barnes next year because....that's what you have on your roster. Your young guys have to sink or swim and become your main guys at some point. Maybe it works and you have a good season, or they don't pan out and you have a bad season. Then you repeat the whole process again the next year. But under this new system, from a coach's perspective, why roll the dice on a relative unknown when you can go out and get proven production?

16 minutes ago, Butch Had Not said:

And everyone should always know you take a guy named Hollywood Smothers anytime, anywhere, anyplace. It’s like an unwritten rule.

So I'm curious as to how this plays out in HS recruiting. Is this "you're taking a paycut Fr-Soph year" thing a short term situation of market adjustment or will that roll forward indefinitely? I can see it happening a lot of different ways. All it takes is one program to star-chase a kid to set an unreasonable future market on him.

I'm sure Barnes got a nice payday from Kentucky because they are spending like drunken sailors, but none of the other Texas portal players have hit the jackpot so far.

Zina is coming back last I saw. Also, he flashed enough this year that he belongs in a different category than Barnes or Clark imo.

It’ll always depend on the player. Freshman that have an impact right away aren’t getting pay cuts. Colin Simmons didn’t get a pay cut.

Yeah honestly I couldn't remember as I was typing that out. Hard to keep track of who's in officially, who's said they're in but not official yet, who we're trying to bring back, and the status of those final negotiations. We've already brought Christian Clark back from the brink once and now he's maybe gonna bail again, lol.

Yeah, forgot about Parker because he's dead to me.

Update from Bama 247 - Coleman, Smothers, a new WR and new RB, and a few others.

Sunday Scoop: Breaking down the latest Alabama transfer portal buzz

Sunday Scoop: Breaking down the latest Alabama transfer portal buzz

 Brett Greenberg (Bama 247)

  • The official NCAA Transfer Portal window opened on Jan. 2 and runs through Jan. 16. Alabama has brought in eight new additions for the 2026 roster and the work is not close to done for head coach Kalen DeBoer, general manager Courtney Morgan and the rest of the staff.

Oklahoma State tight end Josh Ford, NC State running back Hollywood Smothers, Virginia Tech linebacker Caleb Woodson, Michigan interior offensive lineman Kaden Strayhorn, USC defensive lineman Devan Thompkins, Mercer defensive back Carmelo O'Neal, North Alabama punter Adam Watford and Syracuse long snapper Ethan Stangle make up the current group of incoming transfers for the Crimson Tide

ALABAMA TRANSFER PORTAL TRACKERLatest updates on who's coming and going

ALABAMA 2026 ROSTER TRACKER: Who's coming? Who's going? Who's staying?

Who are the other names to know? Which prospects have already taken visits, who we are tracking closely? Who is still on campus? Bama247 breaks down all of the latest buzz heading into Sunday afternoon/early next week!

  • MULTIPLE WIDE RECEIVERS ON CAMPUS OVER THE WEEKEND!

    - The big one is No. 1 portal pass-catcher Cam Coleman, who spent two seasons with Auburn coming out of Phenix-City Central (Ala.) High School. Coleman arrived on campus on Friday for his trip and left campus later Saturday night, which Bama247 noted then. The 6-foot-3, 201-pounder and former five-star in the 2024 class also took trips to Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech over the last week or so. Bama247 was told the trip to Tuscaloosa (Ala.) over the last two days went very well and, to no surprise, new receivers coach Derrick Nix is leading the way here. The former Auburn offensive coordinator during the 2025-26 season is playing a strong role in the Coleman sweepstakes and it wouldn't be shocking if a final decision was made very soon. Bama247 is continuing to work the phones, but one thing that is certain? Alabama is squarely in the mix for one of the most electrifying prospects in the country.

    - Bama247 shared another note late Saturday night after learning that former NC State receiver Noah Rogers made it to campus for his visit earlier this afternoon and is expected to wrap up the trip in Tuscaloosa (Ala.) at some point on Sunday. The Rolesville (NC) native tallied 35 receptions for 478 yards and a touchdown in his freshman season in 2024. He hauled in 33 receptions for 441 yards and two touchdowns in his second year with the Wolfpack during the 2025 season. Bama247 is hearing some positive things when it comes to Rogers' experience on campus so far and will continue to track very closely heading into Sunday afternoon/early next week.

  • THE LATEST WITH A RECENT PORTAL ADDITION...

    - As reported on Friday night and confirmed early Saturday morning, former NC State running back Hollywood Smothers is at Texas for a visit after publicly committing to the Crimson Tide earlier this week. Bama247 is continuing to work the phones when it comes to the 5-foot-11, 195-pounder and ACC leading rusher (85.4 yards per game). As far as the enrollment status with the University of Alabama goes, it has been confirmed that is the case. If this doesn't show just how wild the transfer portal is, I am not sure what will. Stay locked into Bama247 for continued updates.

    ANOTHER RUNNING BACK WORTH KNOWING!

    - Bama247 learned of another name to know when it comes to the running back position early Sunday morning with Makhi Frazier. The 5-foot-10, 218-pounder led Michigan State in carries (116) and rushing yards (520) across nine games (7 starts) in 2025. He missed three of the final four games due to an injury. A visit to Tuscaloosa (Ala.) feels like a possibility, but Bama247 is still digging for more when it comes to Frazier. Ohio State hosted the running back over the weekend.

    SOME OFFENSIVE LINEMEN TO TRACK...

    - Former LSU offensive tackle DJ Chester wrapped up his Alabama visit over the weekend and Bama247 is hearing positive things coming out of the trip. The 6-foot-6, 315-pounder has also seen Georgia Tech, Baylor, South Carolina and Mississippi State before since entering his name in the transfer portal. Offensive line remains a massive need for the Crimson Tide and the former Eagle's Landing Christian Academy (Ga.) standout is absolutely a name to know.

    - Alabama extended an offer to Cal Poly offensive line Racin Delgatty late Saturday night. Several other programs have jumped in on the 6-foot-4, 310-pounder with two years of eligibility remaining including: Michigan, UCLA, Northwestern, Baylor, Colorado, Kansas, USF, Colorado State, Washington State, Oklahoma State, Boise State, San Diego State, Oregon State, Fresno State, UMass, Wake Forest, Hawaii and New Mexico State.

Cal Poly was home to former Alabama tight end Josh Cuevas, who followed (Kalen) DeBoer over the Crimson Tide from Washington. A visit to Alabama has been lined up for Wednesday, Jan. 14, he shared later on Sunday morning. Bama247 will have more then.

    CIRCLING BACK!?

    - Michigan offensive tackle Ty Haywood: The former four-star recruit in the 2025 class, who was committed to Alabama for many months before flipping to the Wolverines last January, arrived on campus for a big visit on Saturday afternoon as reported by Bama247. The 6-foot-5, 315-pounder appeared in three games (15 snaps) with Michigan in the 2025 season (Central Michigan, Maryland, Texas). The love for Alabama was very strong during the recruitment process, hence the long commitment with the Crimson Tide and that has not faded based on what Bama247 is hearing. Haywood is expected to roll right along with with his trip in a very familiar place and all signs continue to point to the Denton (TX) native potentially landing with Alabama after one season in Ann Arbor (Mich.).

    - Bama247 shared a note on Friday morning that communication between Alabama and Kentucky defensive lineman Javeon Campbell (Frankfort, KY) picked up in a big way over the last few days. That continues to hold true and a visit to Tuscaloosa (Ala.) continues to feel like it could take place. The 6-foot-5, 245+ pounder was very high on the Crimson Tide during the recruitment process and Bama247 has learned that there is a strong mutual interest here. Campbell, who was ranked as the No. 1 prospect in Kentucky as part of the 2025 class, is certainly a name to know going forward.

    ANOTHER SPECIALIST?

The Crimson Tide has added a long snapper (Ethan Stangle) and punter (Adam Watford) over the last few days and the work isn't done, per multiple sources. Bama247 has learned that former Marshall place kicker Lorcal Quinn is a top name to know when it comes to rounding out another big group in the specialists world. The Donaghmore, Ireland native entered the NCAA Transfer Portal earlier this week and the Crimson Tide quickly got into contact with the 6-foot-1, 188-pounder.

Quinn played one season with the Thundering Herd in 2025 after being ranked as the No. 1 kicker in the 2025 cycle, per Kohl's Kicking Academy. Quinn went 21-of-26 on field goals last fall, while hitting 4-of-6 attempts on field goals 50-yards or more. He earned First Team All-Sun Belt Conference honors following the 2025 season after not playing American football until last year.

This is another prospect, who Bama247 is paying close attention to over the next few days.

    NEED TO KNOW!

    • The NCAA Division I Administrative Council in October enacted new transfer rules that shifted the way that the portal calendar works for FBS and FCS athletes:

    • Instead of the transfer portal window opening in early December, as it had in recent years, it will now stretch from Jan. 2 to Jan. 16.

    • The NCAA eliminated the spring transfer portal window.‌

    • Unlike in previous years when graduate transfers could enter at any time through the spring window, they are required to utilize the same Jan. 2 to 16 window as everyone else.

    • Previously, players whose school experienced a coaching change were able to enter the transfer portal immediately over a 30-day period. Now, players must wait five days until a new coach is hired to trigger a 15-day window. That window is triggered only if a coaching change happens after Jan. 2.
