68 scholarships for rowing?? brb, going to buy child-size practice oars for my daughters

It's the cheat code to most elite schools. Lots of them have Women's, Men's Heavyweight, and Men's Lightweight crews, plus JV and Thirds boats.

Is Winfield a salvageable piece of the puzzle?  If so, would he rather be a 4th OF here or star at Lamar? I suppose that's the question?

I’m normally a believer in some guys take time to develop, but man it’s just hard to unsee what he showed this year especially defensively.

I think there is a simple yes/no test being applied to a lot of these guys entering the portal. Are they someone you would reasonably expect to contribute on a team who could make it to Omaha in 2026? If the answer is no or you have to think about it, there should be very little resistance if they want to leave.

I think NIL enables this for sure.
You should see healthy mix of Freshmen and Xfers in going fwd.

I am all for it, kids develop differently and a kid who wasn’t redshirted in HS and maybe didn’t do whole PG/5 Tool circuit may be a diamond in rough that Texas would never take a flier on out of HS. Let that dude go to a smaller D1/D2 school get some film and then make a play for him

Props to him for working his way from walk on to starter, but he was a classic tweener. Probably wouldn’t be good enough to be a regular SEC starter but also brought some tools that could make him a solid 4th or 5th OF.

No 20 year old sees themselves that way though.

Will probably never know but I am curious if he was a voluntary portal entry or if his portal entry was "recommended"

We're getting to a point where you have to win the underwear Olympics to be on an elite college roster, but I think that dude could have been a solid role player.

This is what we currently got if you include true freshman minus Cunningham and Fien. Also will exclude Galvan, Belyeu and Flores to be somewhat conservative from a numbers standpoint

*=freshman

C (2): Chamberlain and Courville*

INF (6): Borba, Duplantier, Stewart, Livingston, Mendoza, Rodriguez

OF (7): Winfield, Williams, Gasparino, Peterson, Monsour*, Hill*, Pack*

RHP (19): Riojas, Howard, Grubbs, McCreery, Flores, Moffett, Saunier, Hamilton, Burns, Rerick, Crossland*, Paris*, Cozart*, Rummel*, Boles*, Walls*, Rogers*, Westphal*, Fergason*

LHP (7): Bing, Walker, Navarre, Volantis, Harrison, Mitchell*, McKernan*

So that is 41 right there. So quite a bit more attrition to come.

Offense is no bueno.

Typing that out made me realize they need to make a strong play to get Harrison and Riojas back. Tough to find proven guys in the SEC and Harrison especially was one of the most consistent pitchers in the league.

Do not contact tags mean don’t contact player personally. Doesn’t mean you can’t contact his representation

I know what it means. When someone enters with a do not contact tag there is a 99.9% chance they already know where they are going. Would be nice if it is Texas

Inside the numbers.  Beard improved year over year with ERA dropping from 5.51 to 3.28.  His K/9 was basically 1:1 his freshman year.  No reason to think he wouldn’t improve again.

A little more context to the numbers.  3 appearances versus UTSA.  15.1 innings versus UTSA the past two years.  12 hits, 10 earned runs, 13 Ks, 7 walks, 4 HBP.  He did not finish strong this year - 10 earned in 17.2. 17 hits, 5 walks, 16 K, 1 HBP and 4 WPs in his final 3.  He did not show up strong in the conference tourney with the season on the line against an average Tulane team.

His best outings against better competition were FIU and Charlotte.  Quite a few games against Texas Tuesday competition.  Not the UTSA kind.

A little help from Weiner could go a long way.

Are you talking about summer semesters? Otherwise, there's no reason not to just push the portal dates back some and have it close before school starts again in August/September (depending on the school). As it stands, the current model only really helps some guys take a few credits during a summer session. Portals opening before the culmination of any sport season is just a stupid idea for many reasons.

I get what you are saying, but then it's holding up players on ~285 teams to wait on 16 teams. Let those guys get a move on, figure out their summer seasons, and get to work with their new teams IMO.

Dumb question amnesty, doesn't the portal close before the draft?

Feels like it needs to be 7-8 minimum.

yeah, my guess, is he can't be too crazy on stating publicly he needs 8 new position players but even the 4-5 statement is pretty damning to the current players.

I know there will be guys staying that we'd rather replace but I really can't think of a position where it is outright "we don't need to look".  If he comes back, Galvan is solid and it is a premium D position.  Arod seems to be good enough to stick one of the OF positions. Borba can DH.  Every other position should be wide open.  Jonah is a wildcard obviously.

I’m going to give Arod the benefit of the doubt when it comes to his defense since he played hurt for half the season. He has the tools to grow into a more sound defender and I’m a little surprised how well he did in the outfield all things considered.

Agree on Jonah but don’t forget Mendoza.

yes, agree on Arod thats why I said he should probably lockdown one of the OF positions.  aware of Mendoza, he's likely good.

Why Borba?  .250 and random homers good enough for DH at Texas?

I’m certainly fine replacing him. I guess I should say if trying to get to that number Schloss said. That’s 4 of 9 so then 4-5 makes more sense.
I would like us to take 7 minimum but I’m not sure that’s realistic.

I could see Arod playing the infield if that is where he’s more comfortable. If I’m not mistaken, I think he was a plus defender at short in high school. I just wouldn’t pencil him in the outfield yet.

agree.  Borba at least didn't seem like he wilted down the stretch, finished at .278, walks a decent amount as well, OBP of .437 and he's got some pop(slugged .574). I think he's got a DH spot if he wants it and can play spot first.  hilariously, as slow as he is, he had 4 triples.

4 of 8 instead of 4 of 9.

You don’t want to get the reputation of recruiting over your HS signees every year or cutting them loose in July.

The reason you see Georgia sign 15 portal guys every year is because they sign HS classes of only 8 or 9 guys. We currently have 18 signed. Even Jay Johnson said they don’t plan on taking as big of a portal class this year and while he won’t admit it, they ran off quite a few of their HS signees last year in favor of taking portal guys.

Also have to remember the rosters are going from 40 to 34. If you portal in 8 position players and 6 pitchers and 15 of your 18 man HS class makes it campus, you just used up 29 of your 34 spots. We do have 8-10 returning players I would like to have back. The current roster ain’t total junk.

But it's also important to note that the 34 can all be scholarship players so the reduction isn't that big of a deal.

In the long run it will be a good thing but in the short term it will cause some interesting scenarios because baseball recruiting happens so early and most big programs already had a lot of their 2025 and 2026 classes locked in before the roster reduction was even on the radar.

8-10 position players?  or are you including pitchers?   I'm assuming Max, Galvan are gone.

Portal recruiting is moving at full speed for Jim Schlossnagle and his staff, with no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

The Longhorns hosted three visitors over the weekend. While I can't put out one of those names, two that did visit include a pair of prospects from Virginia.

OF Henry Ford and INF Eric Becker both took in a visit to the Forty Acres later in the weekend and, as of last night, were still on campus.

The big question for this duo is if they'll follow Brian O'Connor to Mississippi State or not.

--

As for the other visitor, they arrived on Friday night. I'm told that visit went very well. It's definitely a situation I'm continuing to monitor very closely.

--

Despite rumors to the contrary floating around on certain social media sites, NO commitments have been given at this time.

--

I normally don't put names out in advance, but I will with this one. Maryland INF Chris Hacopian visited Texas A&M over the weekend and the Aggies felt the visit went well (of course they always do, but that's a different story).

Next up for Hacopian is a pair of visits to both Texas and Arkansas.

I see this coming down to one of these two schools, with the Aggies not having much of a shot.

--

Hacopian won't be the last visitor this week, either.

No, in fact I think we can now do it in ways we couldn't before thanks to NIL. Some of those guys who would have gone to the draft might stay now if we can develop them.

But likewise is does also mean we have a second option by getting guys from mids.
