I've stated my hypothesis that she gets 10 years on FB.  My black friends (and their black friends) do not agree and want much more time.

My response:

What makes you think that's she's unlikely to reoffend? Because she's white?

She's a cold blooded killer who made the conscious decision to rush into a dangerous situation for the sole reason of "being able" to murder another human. She's a major danger to society and the thug shouldn't be on the streets.

What would them changing out of their uniform prior to returning home accomplish?

Maybe remind them that once off shift they're regular citizens in regular citizens clothes and shouldn't be trying to go all robo cop on the first non whites they see?

I believe they should be forced to leave their uniforms and firearms at the station and never take them home or wear while off duty.

The police have operated with prejudiced impunity for far too long and have earned no benefit of the doubt. If they're going to act like racist idiots they need to be treated like racist idiots.

She made a very stupid and rash decision that she is unlikely to repeat. Particularly after serving a stint in the joint of any duration.

A cold blooded killer lies in wait or plans ahead.

I don't know you mentioned it. But I think that if a cop is off duty, they shouldn't be wearing the uniform. And if they aren't in uniform, they shouldn't be going into an apt that they think is being burgled. They should be calling the cops and waiting somewhere else, like any other non-uniformed citizen.

She made the decision to go in all Rambo guns drawn for the sole purpose to mowing down another human. She wasn't caught by surprise. She was alerted at the door before she ever walked in and in that moment was able to differentiate between call for backup and proceed with restrained caution or go on a murderous rampage.

Also FTR, before the sentencing phase began, my prediction was 14 years.  After seeing the cascade of racist and murdery memes and texts....I may be upping that to 45-50 years.

Those, are, ummmm......really bad.  And putting those before the jury that saw fit to find her guilty of MURDER (not a lesser offense)....not good for her.  At all.

No change is immediate, but over time it would happen. When they are trained that when you are off duty you leave your uniform and firearm behind and when not in uniform you are a regular citizen with zero police powers and will be judged/punished as a regular citizen then over time it will take hold. If they started adjusting to that now then with time every new recruit that went to academy after the change will just regard it as normal.

America has allowed and encouraged the cultivation of an entire police force of Inspector Lugers. What we need is to transition the culture to more Barney Millers.

Holee S you want to hear what a lot of your white Dallas brethren think about it.  Flip over to wbap.  I flipped over on my drive home and it was one racist caller after another.  Including the host, he is the worst.  They did everything except call all the blacks in Dallas stupid niggers.    And I only say that, because trust me they were close.

It's not just the racist texts. It's the texts juxtaposed with Bo's charity. I mean the guy was bringing birthday cakes to blind poor people, singing in the choir, going on mission trips, excelling at a top accounting firm, being a family man. All we've heard about Amber is these racist texts and sexually explicit texts. Her family members are going to have to put on an Oscar performance tomorrow to save her.

I’ve said it on this thread already, but their firearm isn’t being left at the station.   Most LEO’s buy their own firearm.  It is their personal property.  Concealed carry laws in TX added into the equation means this is a bad take

Something that always grinds my gears is when an "off duty" (in civilian clothes) cop gets punched in a bar fight, cussed at, whatever and then the civilian faces a higher

charge for assaulting a cop even tho they didn't know it was a cop. The same should hold true for cops. Guyger should get MORE time than a normal citizen should.

One lady did say it was a shame for Botham Jean to die because he seemed like one of the good blacks.

Caller after caller said she didn't, and couldn't, get a fair trial in Dallas because the judge was black and the jury had 5 blacks on it.

2 others lambasted the family for thanking God after, while saying they would have been burning the city if had gone different.

It was too much to keep up with.

Well that needs to change. "The way things are" has created an environment of robust and rampant police corruption which has led to mistrust and hostility towards police officers. They complain that their job is dangerous and hard but decades after decades of their own rampant widespread corruption has made it that way.

Status quo needs to be thrown out completely and widespread reform undertaken. Part of that needs to be improved community relations and outreach and part of that needs to be improved regulations on their own actions and training/habits.

Otherwise we can just keep going down this road and nothing but increased hostility, corruption, and unnecessary violence will occur.

But Mr. Jean was a Christian.  I have it on good authority from this very board that all Christians are conservative, knee-jerk, anti-science assholes.

Also, AM radio seems to have turned into a completely useless cesspool shithole.  Unless you like tejano.  You can't even find a news station on there anymore.

Why? You'd think they take the side of the wholesome Christian business professional over the sexting homewrecker druggie.

Also, I thought conservatives love MLK, why would they side with the person who obviously has ill feelings toward him?

Pretty big precedent to set that citizens can concealed carry but an LEO can’t take their own weapon home with them.  That’s all I’m saying, and it’s why it will never happen.

Corrupt cops, just like corrupt citizens/politicians/corporations/business moguls fucking suck.   But believe it or not, the good in vast majority of all of the things I just mentioned far outweigh the bad in the things I just mentioned.

The host kept playing a snippet of the attorney of the Jean family saying this was a victory for not only Botham but Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin and others.

The host kept inflaming it, and then here they came one after the other.  Couple the callers were so mad that couldn't keep it together.

Some jackass on the Orangebloods thread did this.  I tend to forget these people exists but then I read my buddies Orangebloods account or visit "Fox News all the time" wife's family in the burbs or see facebook posts from folks in the small town I grew up in and reminded, yeah, a lot of people in this country are really fucking dumb and ignorant.

I skimmed thru the last few pages because I've been in court all afternoon but just wanted to add a few corrections

1. there is no probation for murder, period.

2. she cannot be released on bond pending appeal for murder, period.

3. the deadly weapon finding means she has to do half the time before she is parole eligible. Not released. Eligible. She will serve maybe 80% of her sentence, minimum, for murder.

I was thinking this verdict was a compromise. The jury followed the law regarding culpable mental states and would hit her on the low end. Most at 5, maybe a few others with an opinion on 10, the jury meets in the middle at 7.

But this punishment evidence is pushing that number up. I don't think a one of them is going to feel sorry for Amber Guyger once the state is done.

40 years seems grotesquely excessive.

But I also think sentences over 20 years should be reserved for the most heinous offenses.

Walking into someone else's home while they are minding their own business and pulling out your gun and intending to kill them (admitting to it, too) seems pretty heinous to me. Fuck that murdering, trigger happy piece of shit.

Did the family really thank God?

That makes me a little queasy.

Incidentally, although Botham Jean seemed to be a fine example of a Christian, his school, Harding University, is what this place would consider an asshole factory on the level of Baylor or Liberty.  I consider it something of an asshole factory myself, and I'm a leading Apologist on this site.

What is the difference? There is no place in this world for either of them. Why does it have to be one or the other? Both are pieces of shit who deserve to rot in prison. Any duration? So you think a term of 6 months is fine because she will have learned her lesson? She was reckless and negligent by even entering the wrong home. Multiply that by 100 where she draws her weapon and fires without even assessing the situation one bit and killing an innocent man in his own home. And to top it off, he was a good distance away sitting down and un armed. Quit downplaying what she did by trying to compare her to something you think is worse and therefore she deserves a lighter sentence.

Quit putting words in my mouth.

We are incarceration crazy in this country because of inflamed asshole opinions like the foregoing.

In my opinion, probably 95% of incarceral sentences in this country are too long by half.

Without minimizing what happened here, scaled against most other murders, it's relatively mild.  And yes, someone died in all of them.

My gut was that the jury would do what many Texans do - go with their gut, damn the evidence.  A pot-smoking black man got shot by a cop.  In Texas, that's a tough hill to climb for a murder conviction.  Not because of the law, but because Texans.  Add to that the fact that I saw NO piece of evidence that looked powerful enough to overcome that inclination, yep, I called it like I saw it.

As for what my gut told me a jury would do with the pot-smoking black guy who got shot by a cop....forgive me if I don't think too highly of the fine white folk of North Texas.  Pay no mind to the fact that one of 'em just went through the effort to drive all the way to El Paso to murder some brown people.

My gut didn't get this verdict right.  But it also knew that it was just a matter of time before someone like many members of this jury pool went beaner-hunting.  On such matters, I'll still give my gut a strong vote.  Glad the evidence proved otherwise here.

It's called being prejudiced. That's all it is. I guess you can justify it, no skin off my nose. Your contempt for folks is your burden.

I'm not saying a LEO can't carry a concealed gun on their own time. Just that they can't carry their police issued firearm while off duty. If they want to carry a concealed weapon then they need to take all the same steps a normal non felon citizen takes to do so. Get the same permit.

While on duty you only carry approved and issued police gear and only wear approved and issued uniforms / clothing. While off-duty you're not allowed to wear any issued uniform or firearm. Part of reforming this problem is to make clear to these people that they are not cops. They're regular citizens who are hired to be cops only while on duty. It's only a job and not who they are.
