Stanford @ Hawaii (-2.5) (7:30 ET / 6:30 CT CBS): Is this a great game? No. Is it a G5 school in a beautiful location favored at home against a P4 with a really snooty fanbase? Yes. Enjoy the car crash.

Damn. When did Hawaii move to such a small stadium? I went to the 1995 Texas @ Hawaii game in Aloha Stadium.  The stadium in the video looks like a high school.

Aloha Stadium was condemned a couple years ago (the state of Hawaii is not famous for their approach to preventative maintenance), so they had to move on short notice.

In fun news, the replacement just got approved:

I think that’s just a generic image. The release says the stadium will be 22,500 to 25,000 capacity. That image looks way bigger. It’s also not opening til 2029 so I doubt much planning has happened except for a finding plan.

That is the Aloha Stadium site, but it's definitely a pie-in-the-sky image for promotional purposes.

Looks like the big news is that they started actually signing contracts: https://www.khon2.com/sports/contracts-executed-for-new-aloha-stadium/

Their construction costs must be higher because everything has to be shipped in because 400 million seems really high for a stadium with that small of a capacity.

Bill Connolly's full cfb power rankings chart - looks like Stanford is predicted to be the third-worst P4 school (Purdue fucking blows, yikes - sorry not sorry for swiping Brevard. NWU down there too is a bad look for the Big 10)

Twas a very interesting Reddit thread about teams who crashed in the last ten-ish years and have not recovered and don't appear to be on the upswing

Stanford is definitely one of the most listed- long gone are the Harbaugh/Luck and Shaw's first 8 years (averaged 8-10 wins per season)

4-8, 4-2, 3-9, 3-9, 3-9, 3-9

Same with Michigan State - not that long ago that Dantoni had double digit wins in 6 of 8 seasons from 2010 to 2017.  Other than that one Mel Tucker season he managed 11-2 in 2021 on the back of KW3, it's been

7-6, 7-6, 2-5, 11-2, 5-7, 4-8, 5-7

MSU won't be down forever. They need a competent coaching staff and a little NIL money.

I don't think Stanford is ever coming back. I don't think the buy-in is there figuratively or literally. And I think Stanford in the Pac-12 was an easier sell than Stanford in the ACC. They've been dogshit in basketball for over a decade now, too.

I have Irish relatives through marriage and we've visited plenty, but mostly on the west coast with Galway as the home base. The crazy thing about going from there to Dublin is that, the first time I did it in 2009, it was like a 6+hour drive. Maybe more like 7+ if memory serves. Now? Less than 3 hours. They've really built out a lot of infrastructure that they were lagging on for decades.

Anyway, to tex's original post, the kids growing up there still have to learn Celtic/Gaelic/whatever they call it in school. They say there's a pocket of like 10,000-ish people on the island who still speak it as native tongue. Also, Dublin is a terrific city. I want Texas to open against someone there, preferably Notre Dame, someday.

I'm excited about the Iowa State/KSU game. Does Matt Campbell do his typical opening game bedshitting? Or does he have his team ready for a conference rival? Does Klieman move on from whatever personal stuff was causing him problems last year? Can Avery Johnson approach living up to the early expectations when he arrived? Can he complete a forward pass at least 15 times in this game? Interested in finding out.

The KU/Fresno State game could be fun. Leipold has another new OC. Maybe Jalon Daniels figures some shit out more quickly this season. KU closed well last year, but their start was ugly and ruined the year.

Oh, just a ton of NIL money and competent coaching? Is that all? I think those things are just lying around everywhere.

The point is that MSU isn't Stanford. It's a huge state school with good history in both revenue sports and it isn't on the other side of the country as its conference.

They're never going to be perennial title contenders but they shouldn't be going 5-7 every year or ever go 4-8.

What's your assessment of Mississippi State, Princeton, Maryland, etc? Lots of shitty state schools suck at football. Additionally, while they have a decent history, they're not an overly rich college one of the biggest NIL players is their state school rival. It's going to be harder for them to claw their way out of this hole. On the other hand, Jonathan Smith seems like a good coach. But we'll see. I don't think it's a given they're going to return to 8-4 seasons.

Princeton? Did you mean Rutgers lol?

I think Sparty has better history than all 3 of them and has been good in multiple eras. I wouldn't put any money on them returning to any sort of glory but they should be able to not suck as much as they have as of late. They are still recruiting pretty well in hoops - I know basketball is a bigger deal up there but they aren't Duke or Kansas. They care about football, too.

Yes. That's what I meant.

I actually think that Michigan State is going to be improved this season and more formidable going forward with Smith at the helm.

Michigan State has some decent NIL backers. Everyone got turned off by the Mel Tugger stuff, but if Smith shows real signs of life, they're going to be okay on that front.

Regarding Maryland, folks should look at their schedule. They just brought in a decent dual threat, true freshman QB, and Locksley has actually amassed some talent. Everyone is picking these guys at the bottom of the Big 10 with Purdue this year. Maybe that comes to fruition. That said, I think they've got a shot at being an ASU type of riser this year. Regarding the schedule, they play poo in the non-con and then they miss Oregon, Iowa, Ohio State, USC and Penn State. They get Indiana and Michigan at home and go to Indiana. They could go anywhere from 3-9 to 9-3.

Two of my best high school friends were Northern Irishmen who moved back home afterwards, to I started in Cork and worked my way north to visit them for a St. Patrick's Day in Coleraine/Portstewart, and I've been to Dublin on work travel as well.

Every country on earth tries to tell you they have the friendliest, most hospitable people, but Ireland is the only one telling the truth, and I say that as someone with zero Irish ancestry. What a wonderful place.

I agree on Ireland. I love the people and the place. And I say that as someone who almost got into a full blown bar brawl with like 5 of them at an Irish wedding.
