OU loves to cheat to get their guys open. It's what happens when you have a team of JAGS.

... so... we should be taking notes?

The rule literally says you don't need to actually be substituting. The player just has to look like he is going off the field, which he did. You're a fucking moron.

What do the rules say about how you're supposed to run to the sideline?

Literally no one was subbing in.  Auburn just wasn't paying attention.

They talked about the rule in the rulebook on air. Where were you?

I feel like you’re under the impression that they developed that terminology in anticipation of a player bringing like a rodeo clown barrel on the field or something.

Buddy they already looked at it during the break and said it was illegal. Give it a rest. Even if it were legal it’s corny and bush league af

The commentators said it was illegal.  Ref on the ground said it was legal because he was standing right there looking at it.

There was no play stoppage for any subs at all.  Auburn should know that.  They just missed him.

Again, that is the literal definition of hiding out. That was the play got outlawed as hiding out. Here is your google AI overview:

Quote

A "hideout tactic" in NCAA football is an illegal trick play that uses a simulated substitution to deceive the opposing defense. It typically involves a player pretending to exit the field of play, only to stay near the sideline unnoticed and then run downfield to catch a long pass. This tactic is considered unsportsmanlike conduct and has been banned since 1953.

How the tactic works

A hideout play typically unfolds in the following way:

A player or group of players runs toward the sideline as if they are substituting out of the game.

At the last moment, one player remains on the field, often near the sideline or team bench area, and blends in to avoid detection by the defense.

As the rest of the offense lines up for the snap, the "hidden" player stays unnoticed by the defense, who believes all substitutions are complete.

Once the ball is snapped, the hidden player runs downfield unguarded, and the quarterback throws a pass to them for an easy score.

Why it was banned

The NCAA banned the "hideout play" because it violates the principle of fair play by using deception related to substitutions to gain an advantage. The rule specifically prohibits the use of substitutions, or the simulation of them, to confuse the opponent.

Modern rule and penalty

In modern NCAA football, any use of a simulated substitution to deceive the opponent is a live-ball foul, resulting in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

Penalty: 15 yards from the previous spot.

Team foul: The penalty is assessed as a "team foul" and does not count toward the individual player's two-unsportsmanlike-conduct disqualification limit.

Preventing the play: Because this is a serious and deceptive foul, officials are encouraged to flag the play immediately at the snap to prevent a huge gain and enforce the penalty.

Here is a Texas memo on something similar (https://taso.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/2023-memo-re-hideouts.pdf😞

I was thinking "Oakley wearing pre-widomaker victim coating his F150 windshield with spittle in a sociopolitical rant", but the judges will accept your answer.

There were no subs so the refs never paused play for subs.  No one was pretending anything.

Had there been other subs and he wasn't one but ran to the sideline like he was, then yes.

There were no subs at all and he wasn't hiding anywhere.

The Ref on the ground is an idiot and should be sent to Ref D3
