i like the honesty and the challenge for accountability. that’s an important part of building a winning culture. i’ve never been around a winning program where the players couldn’t handle being publicly held accountable.

I like how Codie was a starter a month ago but now just doesn't play at all, ever.

Also why isn't Duru playing? That's the kind of guy we need to be actually developing during this waste of a season.

Maybe this will take a year longer than we want?

I’m trying to remain positive, though I understand the frustration in not being at least a pretty decent team right now with the portal.

Like I’ve said, Miller wasn’t my first choice but he’s a huge upgrade over RT. If we couldn’t get who I really wanted (Beard to return, then Oats, then the tech guy) then I do wish we would have discovered a lower level coach with upside. That, to me, is where the “Texas pride” comes into play where we don’t hire coaches who haven’t been HCs already.

Like you, I like some of the positives I’ve seen from the team/culture such as the accountability piece, but this is going to be a frustrating season.

Is Miller a huge upgrade over Terry? Because Terry couldn’t put together a good roster, and Miller’s first roster is shit. Terry couldn’t field a strong D, and neither has Miller. This team looks to be on the level of a Terry team.

CDC set the standard with his “all top 10 programs” comments, and frankly he’s mostly delivered. it’s his job to make sure that the team has the resources it needs (which we absolutely do, we just don’t want to use them), and it’s Miller’s job to coach the team. that shit does not fall at the feet of the fans, especially when neither of those guys is holding up his own end of the bargain. this is Texas Basketball, a niche sport in an international city with a million other things to do and see. you don’t tell the basketball fans that we need to give CDC and sean miller money before either of them can just do (punches the white board) their job!!!

he's done an amazing job. he'll get this hire right eventually

Also Is being “better” than Terry some kind of significant data point?

Perhaps he shouldn’t hire a friend and use the same criteria he uses when hiring other sports?

CDC hired Schlossnagle and their bro relationship from their TCU days was widely known and help get him here.

Schlossnagle turned down the Texas job when Augie left. He said he had a better program at TCU at the time.

He left Aggy high and dry to reunite with CDC.

It helps that he is also a good coach, so the friend thing doesn't matter.

The program feels completely dead right now. Like more dead than at the end under Rodney Terry.

I'm more apathetic towards the team than I ever was under RT, which is crazy, the first year of a new coach is supposed to be all about hope for the future.

This feels empty when the team is actually worse. Its obviously early, but in the transfer portal era, I don't' think coaches deserve as long of a leash as they did in the past.

I can see your point. With that said, if the notes are true at basketball is in the lower/lowest level of NIL in the SEC, then what are you expecting?

Key difference is Scloss is and was considered one of the top 3-4 coaches in his sport. Miller is not and has never been.

If the NIL is so bad how does Texas have 3 4 stars committed? Ogden playing for free because he's a legacy recruit?

Or straight up abandonment. At least until it's taken out of our ADs hands (like football).

We’re certainly not making the tournament this year and will probably finish with a losing record.

If Miller doesn’t make the tournament in year two, does he get a third year?

Either way, I’m the least excited I’ve ever been about men’s basketball at Texas. At least the women are fun as hell to watch. And baseball is less than six weeks away.

Edited by MuellerHorn

It just isn’t a fun team to root for. There is no chemistry. They don’t seem to be having any fun and they aren’t fun to watch.

I thought the construction of the roster was interesting in that we finally have some size. But they don’t play well together at all. Tramon Mark in particular is the most disappointing from a culture perspective. Just sulks around and seems unhappy all the time. And Pope flaps his gums after the Virginia loss about how things will change, but he personally hasn’t changed. And Swain is a ball hog. And Traore looks like a better rebounding Onyema. And Matas fouls 4 times in 90 seconds in some of the dumbest ways imaginable.

Who are we supposed to root for? I liked Duru early and he is gone. Wilcher looks like he could be a piece with some development. But generally this is not a very likable bunch. I dare say this group of players might have a better record if RT was coaching them. I don’t think they would be worse.

38 minutes ago, HookEm said:

I wouldn't call him a ball hog. He may look off teammates sometimes but he's our leading assister and scorer and is shooting 56% from the field. I could argue that he could stand to shoot more, if anything.

just to catch everyone up to what has gone down so far to the best of my knowledge:

1)Beard gets arrested and fired

2)RT leads the team to the Elite 8, and because of a fear of media scrutiny and “optics”, we hire RT instead of doing a real deal search for a HC. rumors swirl that sean miller would have been hired had RT not done well in the tourney

3)RT is predictably canned

4)once again, CDC elects to completely forego any kind of coaching search, and instead settles for his old buddy sean miller, despite the fact that no other top program in the country would ever even consider interviewing miller were their job to open up.

5)meanwhile, the following coaches have been recent, non-splash, non bank breaking hires for other schools:

dusty may

tommy lloyd

tj otzleberger

mark byington

dan hurley

kevin young

pat kelsey

nate oats

todd golden

ben mccollum

grant mccasland

ryan odom

fred hoiberg

kevin willard

and that’s just from the kenpom top 25

there are so, so, SO many young, promising, talented head coaches out there; we’ve literally just not even tried to identify and then hire any of them after the beard shit went down. it’s truly as if CDC just gave up on men’s basketball after chris beard. the wild levels of success of the rest of our athletics programs might take some of the sting away for some folks, but for me that only makes it worse. i really cannot explain wtf is up with CDC’s apathy towards this program, but it’s the first thing he’s done in his time as AD that i’ve been highly critical of. there’s just no excuse for this BS. it’s lazy and dishonest, and it’s made the moody center a concert venue/women’s basketball arena. thats not acceptable.

Our known glaring holes (no PG ... lack of ball handler/floor general ... nobody, aside from maybe Weav, who can defend a fast guard... at best inconsistent outside shooting) are going to doom this team. It's particularly frustrating that the guys who are bringing the ball up court are holding on to it way too long and our "shooters" don't seem interested in moving without the ball with any urgency. Weaver is the only guy who shows consistent SEC level energy. Vok and Swain have their moments, but try to do too much at times when they need to pass the ball and reset (this is true of most of the team). Heide, who seems like a good shooter, is hesitant to shoot and/or not getting schemed open off the ball enough.

Mark is role player small forward ... too slow and confused to be a ball handling guard and unable to stay in front of a guard on defense. The experiment with him as a primary ball handling, iso playing guard is over in my opinion. Time to ride with Wilcher and Pope and hope they show growth in the system.

Give me more Codie, Duru, and Wilcher. Let us see if they take advantage of some legit playing time. Traore and Mark don't offer a reliable output. It's all over the place with them. And Heide is frustrating. He seems capable and athletic but disappears on the court.

If Miller doesn't pull a legit PG (probably need 2) from the portal next year, his fate may be doomed unless one of the many freshman swingmen we signed can run a SEC offense (which is a high hurdle). Granted this is year one and he had to scramble to fill a roster, but he better be combing the globe for a floor general or his ticket will be punched back to the rust belt.

With regards to NIL, why would Miller take the job without some assurances of adequate NIL? I’m going with he was staying one step ahead of not doing much in his second tenure at Xavier.

god he stands out when he’s on the floor. his effort should embarrass his teammates. if only he had any real basketball talent, because he’s got the effort and athleticism. he’s doj balbay without the ability to run an offense. love the guy, limitations and all.

Why oh why did I open this thread? What did I expect to find here? Exactly what I found. I'll check back in 2028. Peace.

I expected the product on the floor to be better than RTs team last year. Sadly it is not. Not a promising start for Sean....

Basketball is a stopgap between football and baseball at Texas. We just need football to keep playing into mid January.

No it’s not, it’s a legitimate sport.

I don’t know why “fans” come to the basketball board just to post how much they hate Texas basketball and hope it fails.

I know, right? We have a legitimate women's team, more people should watch that 😁

Its like anything else, hire shitty coaches, get shitty results. It wasn't too long ago our team was #2 in the nation with early season wins over #2 gonzaga and #7 creighton (both at the moody) and there was legitimate buzz around the program. But after Beard's dumbassery blew it all up, we're back to uninspiring hires with complete shit scheduling in Austin. There is simply no juice with the current team/staff, and honestly while our incoming recruits are decent enough they aren't on the same level as a Tre Johnson. I'll be shocked if Miller makes it more than 3 seasons. If he tries running it back next season with no PG, probably more like 2 seasons. I don't understand what the fuck he was thinking with this roster construct.

Something else that bothered me from Miller—

He mentioned in his press conference that he doesn’t send clips to the conference office.

I don’t like this. This is how refs learn because sure, those refs will break down the game afterwards but it’s important to send controversial plays to the assignor for education and clarification. You should always do this.

no reason not to. also, the pressure actually works if you do it correctly (and plenty of times when you don’t).

Fair.

1 hour ago, The Ace of Aces said:

This isn't a good take. Texas has been treating basketball seriously for 25+ years. We fired a coach who took us to a Final Four and multiple Elite 8s because we demanded more. Then we went out and hired the hottest young coach in the game in Shaka Smart. Yes, he turned out to be a fraud, but he was fresh off a Final Four and was an extremely hot commodity. We ultimately fired Shaka and hired an even hotter coach in Chris Beard, who was a season removed from taking freaking Texas Tech to the title game. We built arguably the best new basketball venue in the country in the Moody Center.

Beard F'ed the program terribly. That is the problem. If Sean Miller doesn't perform well, he will get replaced in short order.

Well to be more technical, he was 4 seasons off a Final Four when he took the Texas job.

my guess is Texas was the best he was going to do if he didn't want to end his career in the Big East. to be honest CDC threw him a bit of a lifeline.

My opinion is that Beard had alignment of admin, donors, and sponsors. RT had alignment of some donors who knew him, liked him, and wanted him to succeed. Miller’s got nothing, and it kind of looks like it.
