I really, really hope Herman can get this thing turned around on the field, because it's obvious (at least at this point) that he is damn near perfect for this job off of it.

I was clamoring for him every chance I got to other alums before we hired him. Now we just need him to rectify some bad hires and we really will be a force again.

We say it every damn year, but this year is *especially* critical to win 9+ and be in conference contention. With Riley at OU, Jimbo at aggy, a flailing O at LSU, a weak Big12 relative to last season, a huge DKR showcase against USC, and a intense focus on Year 2 of Herman's tenure, this year on the field could be the impetus to building a true playoff contender for the next decade.   hyperbole.gif

Sure. One that was committed to OU sucks previously. So he's a 2%er.

Casey Thompson was an OU legacy.

The uncertainty with the Sumlin regime is the only reason he committed elsewhere. His dad is "letting him make his own decision" but he's really not. Fred Spiller is a redass aggie who wants his son at ATM. Spiller winds up at ATM unless Jimbo Aggins and #TheLitSilentAssassin really fuck it up.

Brain surgeon? Guess sometimes we have to write at a grade school level.  “They tell me I got da sugers”.

I think Spiller is Aggy bound. I guess the silver lining is we don't have to play against him. He's an Aggy Legacy, you kind of have to concede those guys.

His bloodlines are a pity. I think Spiller is the best senior RB in the state of Texas. He's better than Glass, and I don't think it's very close.

Hey @OnAComputer at the end of your interview with Mrs. Floyd, am I correct that I heard her say that even though De'Gabriel wants to shut it down she's going to push him to look at 2 other schools closer to home? Not a surprise but it'll be an interesting variable in whether he sticks or not.

It's interesting that she didn't come to Texas on the official visit and instead deferred to her local family...that kid's going to have a tough decision to make closer to signing day.

I disagree COMPLETELY.

As a utility player he's better.  Faster as well.  As a pure H-back he's not.  Between the tackles Glass is a much better runner - stronger too.

He hasn’t taken us OV yet and see said she’s going to push him to visit other schools to take full advantage of his recruitment. She doesn’t want him to shut it down just yet. Will be interesting.

Do you happen to know why Chip hasn't offered at UCLA?

I don't recall why Isaiah Spiller is not being recruited. Herman likes a slot WR that has the ability to do things in the backfield and Spiller seems to fit that mold. Just higher targets on the board or off field issues?

https://247sports.com/player/isaiah-spiller-46039053

Our WR board is insane and we have a shot at all of our top targets, no way in hell Spiller would be a priority there.

The only place Spiller would fit in our class is as a second change-of-pace back behind Cain, but given how aggy that family is, seems like that would be a waste of time and resources.

Horns247 Recruiting Mailbag: Can Texas close with top OL targets?

I long for the days when we had an elite offensive line. When our OL controlled the line, the receivers looked better. The running backs looked better. The quarterbacks looked better. Even the water tasted better. Do you expect this recruiting class to be a big step in that direction? -- OrangeIsNewBlack

EJ: We had a lot of questions about offensive line recruiting this week. So let me just address things big picture. Herb Hand was an upgrade as a recruiter at the position. Every target I’ve talked to has said nothing but good things about him as a recruiter and a coach. I believe he has what it takes to land the elite of the elite at the position. And it’s showing early. Texas is the frontrunner for Tyler Johnson and is a top three school for the likes of Branson Bragg, Stacey Wilkins, Javonne Shepherd and Kenyon Green. Hand has reshaped the recruitments of Shepherd and Green and once he gets some 1-on-1 time with Bragg, I feel like the Longhorns will retake the momentum there. Hand is more than capable of brining in an impressive haul this cycle. By the way, I love Orange Is The New Black.

Mike: EJ said it best. We’ve yet to see how he coaches and develops here, but the early recruiting returns on Hand are impressive.

Who are the guys that you are close to putting in a crystal ball for Texas? And how close are you for each one? -- iits_JeremyP

EJ: Well, we both just put in Crystal Ball picks for four-star wide receiver Dylan Wright. He was definitely the closest earlier in the week. But obviously, that pick is in. I would say I’m pretty close to putting in one for Louisiana athlete Makiya Tongue. He loved his recent visit, and I’m continuing to hear that the Longhorns have the inside track. His return visit is going to be huge. I wouldn’t say I’m really close on any other recruits. I’ve considered putting in picks for Rian Davis (he loves UT and will visit soon) and Javonne Shepherd (UT is building steam and it would fire up my Twitter mentions, which I enjoy).

Mike: Dylan Wright would have been the simple answer, but like EJ said, we’ve already done that. I think one player EJ didn’t mention that I’m close on is Jalen Catalon. It’s going to be a tough fight with some other schools, but I feel like Craig Naivar is doing a stellar job in that recruitment. Depending on how his official goes, I think we could be close to putting one in for NaNa Osafo-Mensah. It’s amazing what Texas has done in just a short period of time.

Are we going to be heavy players for Jermaine Johnson and Lakia Henry? Is there any huge JUCO offensive tackle out there that we are showing interest in? I was sick when we lost Badara Traore to the Cajuns. -- UTwildcatter34

EJ: Yes, I do believe Texas will be major players with both. Henry has been in constant communication with the staff and wants to make a visit to UT this summer. While he didn’t play with Gary Johnson, the Texas linebacker went to his junior college and will be involved in his recruitment. Johnson was really excited about the Texas offer when he got it last month. He’s pegged to UCLA right now, but a visit to Texas could change things. And he does plan to visit Austin in the summer. As far as JUCO offensive tackles go, that's not a route they are currently exploring.

Mike: As we’ve seen with this staff, don’t count them out when they get kids on campus. Todd Orlando usually makes a lasting impact with prospects like Henry, and Texas should be in it. Alabama will be tough to beat, but Texas has a scheme and need they can sell.

Is Texas A&M or Alabama the more serious threat for Demarvin Leal? -- HD4evr

EJ: Can we please get you a new username!? Seriously man, if you want a change, I can make it happen. Hope you’re enjoying the coverage here. Anyway, I believe Texas A&M is the bigger threat. The Aggies are pushing and will likely get him on campus in the near future. However, I think Texas has a clear advantage in this one. The Longhorns have impressed him on both of his offseason visits, and the staff has won over his mother. I feel like Oscar Giles will finally close on a monster fish.

Mike: As much as Alabama is appetizing to defensive linemen, I’ve always gotten the vibe from Leal that he will stay close. I think it will be between Texas and A&M, but EJ and I both feel Texas is in the lead.

How do you feel about the Texas’ chances with Makiya Tongue and Chester Kimbrough from Louisiana? -- Racer X

EJ: As I mentioned above, I’m really close to putting in a pick for Tongue. With another successful trip, the Longhorns might be able to reel him in. It’s a little bit of a different story with Kimbrough. Right now, I am hearing that Florida is the team to beat in his recruitment. Texas, however, is under strong consideration and should receive a visit at some point this offseason.

Mike: A key Louisiana source recently told me that Kimbrough’s recruitment is pretty wide open, but that Florida held the early edge. It was no surprise to see the Crystal Ball move their way in the last few weeks. Texas simply needs to get him on campus and then we will have a better idea where he stands. I’ve been told they might get an official.

Is Maninoa Tufono considering Texas very highly at all? Saw some positive Twitter interaction. -- vinnyC40

EJ: He will remain a long shot until he makes his way to campus. But he’s taking a harder look at Texas thanks to the commitment of DeGabriel Floyd. The two are friends, and I’ve been told Tufono really respects Floyd. If the Longhorns can get him in for a visit, things could get serious. For now, UT remains on the outside looking in.

Mike: As is the case with many of these out-of0state guys, you have to get them on campus. Once they do that, they become much more serious contenders. If they could get him on campus with Floyd, you never know what could happen.

Another interesting note from EJ a couple days ago

— Floyd will also help the Longhorns in the recruitment of five-star Mater Dei (Calif.) athlete Bru McCoy. I’m told the Longhorns are working extremely hard to get him on campus without any other recruits as they want to roll out the ‘burnt orange carpet.’ McCoy has been in constant communication with the staff, including Director of Recruiting Bryan Carrington, so don’t be surprised if it happens this offseason.

I hadn't paid too much attention to McCoy since he's a long shot, but I'm going to now. Don't know if we'll get him on campus, but I really want to know what this staff would do with an entire weekend to go all in on one guy. Did we do that with any guys last cycle?

TFB Weekend Open Post - http://texas.thefootballbrainiacs.com/2018/04/open-post-weekend-april-6th-8th/

Lewis Cine: This past weekend, nationally ranked 2019 defensive back, Lewis Cine, took a three-day long unofficial visit to Texas. Cine recently moved to Cedar Hill, TX, where he is attending Trinity Christian. He comes to Texas via Massachusetts via Florida.

Having been a highly recruited prospect before he moved to Texas, Cine has already established strong relationships with other staffs. Mostly notably, he has a very strong relationship with Penn State and according to Cine, that’s the team to beat. While living up North, Cine was able to visit Penn State twice and get to know the coaches for a year and half.

But as we know, when Texas gets a player on campus…they make an impression, “Texas made a very big step… It was more than I expected… I did not expect everything to be that big and brand new. They’re building that relationship with me and this visit was a step in doing that. Texas says I’m the number one priority for them.”

Cine was also able to take in the scrimmage on Saturday where he noted how physical the safety play was and how they rotated their players.

While Penn State has had more time to build that relationship, Cine says that Coach Naivar and company can make up for lost time, “I don’t know yet when I’m going to make it back down for a visit. There’s a lot going on. But I’ll make it back down at least this summer and maybe sooner.” Cine feels the two staffs at Texas and Penn State are similar “coaching wise… both are young and energetic,” but loved the hospitality the coaches showed him while on campus, “The kept it loose… I had a chance to see the whole campus and all the facilities,” (something he did not get to do at Penn State).

Furthermore, the coaches sold Cine on playing defensive back in the Big 12, “The thing about the conference is that it is passing heavy and they would have me playing all four safety positions. That really opened my eyes a bit.” Coach Naivar and the staff like Cine’s versatility and expressed as much to him during their meetings, “We talked football and where I’m going to be playing. They want me to play anywhere in the secondary. They think I can do that.”

In terms of additional visits, Cine says he’d like to visit Georgia, soon. But beyond that, again, he has his eye on a return visit to UT.

Again, Texas is just going to need to chop wood here. They have to continue to communicate with Cine, get him down to Austin as often as possible and…sell him on the warm weather, “I see my people back home dealing with snow and it’s beautiful down here. I’m loving this weather, man!” – (Will & Super K)

Shhhh Makes An Appearance: It’s only been a few days since Texas landed 2019 LB, DeGabriel Floyd and already they’ve landed another commit…

This one still has a bit before it will come out. It isn’t expected to be announced this month.

It is another nationally ranked player. – (Super K)

Kenyatta Watson: Recently, I spoke with the father of 2019 DB, Kenyatta Watson. The Watson family was planning on being in Austin this week for an unofficial visit.

That trip was cancelled.

Instead, Watson is looking at a possible return to Texas with his mother for the Spring Game. If not, then certainly for his official visit at the end of the month.

Watson Sr tells me that Kenyatta will announce his decision May 4th. – (Super K)

One the most physically imposing WR in the state of Texas in the 2019 class is West Mesquite (TX) WR Dylan Wright. He will be be in Austin this weekend for an unofficial visit.

Texas offered Wright in early January, and this will be his second visit to Austin since receiving the offer. He was at Texas’ Junior Day in February. The last few weeks have been extremely busy for Wright in terms of visits. He has taken visits to Arkansas, Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan, Indiana, and Notre Dame. He now has the Texas visit this weekend, and then I was told today by someone close to him that he plans to visit Alabama, Auburn, and Florida State this month a well.

Obviously Wright is trying to see as many schools as possible before he starts to take his official visits. Though the sense I get is that the schools closer to home are still the favorites for him. Including Texas, TCU, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. I was also told by someone that Texas has a “real shot” to take the lead in Wright’s recruitment if things go well this weekend. Though he doesn’t plan to make any decisions in the near future

Wright is a very high priority target for Texas at WR. With others guys like Garrett Wilson and Elijah Higgins along with current commit Jordan Whittington. – (Andrew)
