2019 Houston Astros Thread

Still too early to tell if it is meaningful, but Altuve is striking out 19% of his PAs. His career average is 11%. K% and BB% tend to stabilize fairly quickly. This will be an interesting trend to track.

He is making contact on 76.5% of his swings; for his career he is at 87.4%. His swinging strike % is 9.9% so far; career is 6.1%.

He seems to be selling out for power; if he hits 30 HR and hits around .300, none of this will be an issue. Just interesting that his offensive style seems to be changing.

Dallas Keuchel is believed open to the right 1-year deal, then resetting. One under the radar team: maybe Milwaukee, which has been linked to Kimbrel and has been willing to give up draft choice at times (ie Grandal, Lohse). Phillies, Padres, Astros are among other possibilities.

Is it weird to anyone else that Keuchel still hasn’t signed.  On almost any other club than the Astros, he’s a solid #2 pitcher.  Those just grow on trees now, or did GMs miraculously become discerning buyers all of the sudden?

His money demands outweigh his productivity. Plus few teams are willing to give the up the draft compensation for a 1 year rental.

DKs reliance on finesse pitching, lack of putaway pitch, and initial contract demands are all going against him. with teams focused on launch angles and hitting the ball out of the park, there just isnt a high demand for a pitcher like him. if he's not hitting spots on corners and with him pitching down to begin with, it just opens himself to a lot of potential damage versus hitters. swing paths already start down to end high, right in line with his pitching style.

can he be valuable piece on a rotation? absolutely but he needs to be real with himself and try to reset his market for the remainder of this year, even if he was to sign today, it would be a few starts/weeks before you could assume he would be back to normal, and that puts you already late to end of may. is losing a draft pick for that type of production worth it, especially if you're not on a contender and he's on a 1 year deal. you know he's kicking himself for not taking that extension

This happened over the last few seasons. All front offices are data-driven now, and the data doesn't support giving a soft-tossing 31 year-old the kind of money/years he was asking for.

Keuchel would have gotten the deal he sought if this were 2013. He/Boras overestimated his value in 2019.
