I don’t think I’ve ever been less than 3 generations behind. I’m rocking an SE right now and I hate to give it up because I love the size but the battery is starting to fail.

Shouldn't be hard to put a new one in it.  My son worked a summer job to buy a new IPhone XR and I gave his old IPhone six to his sister.  He was always complaining about the battery so I ordered a kit from IFixIt.  Was a simple replacement and it works like a champ now.

Phones have become like laptops.  There's absolutely no reason to buy a new one every year or couple of years.  Unless you play intense graphics games, your 3 or 4 yr old phone is just capable today as it was then.  The only difference, and it's a huge difference, is the camera.  But unless you are a chic who always posts on instagram, you aren't taking pics every got damned minute and don't need the latest and greatest with emoji or scene filters and other high school bullshit need for attention.

If you battery sucks, pay the $25 from Amazon and do it yourself or take it to a place for $75.  Way cheaper than buying a newer used or new phone.

Yea, with two kids on our hand me down 6s, I've gotten to where I can do a screen and battery in about 20 minutes. The batteries are so cheap, and the kids are on them so much, every time they break a screen (about once a year) I just replace both.

I can’t find any spec that mentions the minimum focal distance.

Thanks. Probably not a feature that most people look for but it would be a huge selling point for me.

I agree on the laptop analogy; the only reason I’m looking to update my 7+ is the internal memory of 32gb isn’t big enough with everything that keeps getting added to IOS.

Telephoto camera on the iPhone 11 Pro Ever is going to make for more interesting hot or not entries.

52 mm equivalent.  just normal, not actually telephoto.

Ok so I just got my wife an XR Aug 31st - her old 6S broke and I had no options.

There's a 14 day return window which ends this coming saturday.  Pre-orders start for the 11 Friday but it won't likely be available until the 20th at the earliest.

Now what do I do?  If I had an old usable iphone to let her use until the 11 arrives I would.  I paid about the same for it, I think, as what the new 11 will cost (although I'm sure the trade-in value of the old 6s will be lower than it was 2 weeks ago - got $150 for it, surprisingly).  She'd appreciate the better camera, and maybe battery life, but that's about it.

Someone help me come up with a plan.

Return it for another one. Then return that one in 14 days and buy the one you want

So I just realized the XR I bought dropped $200... Might just keep it and submit price protection claim to credit card, would make the phone + 2 yrs apple care $650. Wife would probably like better camera features but her upgrade from 6s to XR was pretty substantial and she's happy with it

Yeah, kind of funny to call that focal length “telephoto”. I would call it a portrait lens.

Marketing.

I really hate their obsession with thinness in phones and laptops, but there's no going back now that power banks are cheap and ubiquitous.

I'm not one to upgrade my phone immediately when the new ones come in, but if the macro photography is better, I will definitely switch. However, since I don't follow this stuff closely, when will sales on the new phones start? I have ATT and my dad can add lines on his T-Mobil account for free - so if T-Mobil offers a buy one get one free deal or add a line and get a discounted phone deal, I'll switch. Do you think they will have deals on the new phones when the Christmas ads come out?

I doubt the macro capabilities will change much if at all between the XS and 11 Pro. They are most likely using the same lens for the 11 Pro (the one they refer to as telephoto) as they did for the XS.

Just curious, how much macro photography are you doing? And of what? Honestly, if that is a really big deal for you, it’s worth investing a DSLR and macro lens and not cut corners.

I take a lot of medical photos that don't need to be of great quality. I have been looking at the Olympus micro 3/4 with a macro lens but the flash is fairly expensive and not great because it uses twin flashes for macro instead of a ring flash. And the great thing about a phone is that they are really easy to focus and you can use one hand to take the picture and the other to retract. Really, the biggest downside to the iPhone is that it now embeds photos rather than attaches them to the email. So when I send them to a computer for patient records, it is kind of a pain transferring them.

Yeah, that is an option. I bought a 3 lens kit several years ago for my iPhone and it worked well with the expectation that it was a smartphone with a cheap macro/wide/tele lens attached.

So what's the benefit of AppleTV+ that comes free with a new iPhone?  I read online that it will have its own original programming--which is something, but will it offer access to movies and shows like Netflix?

It's another streaming service for you to try/drop/subscribe to... But the model is more HBO with an emphasis on the shows rather than everything under the sun like Netflix.

not all lens kits are of the same quality.  there are some REALLY good lens accessories, but they are $80+.  moment, olloclip, sandmarc just to name a few.

I forget which brand I had. This was 5 years ago. It was more of just something to mess around with as I usually shoot with a DSLR or SLR. I don’t see myself buying another set of iPhone lenses as they would most likely just be thrown in my gear bag, and if I have my gear bag, I have my main camera...I would just reach for it instead.

But for what Bevo needs these lenses would be ideal. Especially if he posts some fucked up photos in the photo thread.

Ha, ha. Seriously though I am not familiar with the Moment lenses. I was at Precision Camera and asked about add on lenses and am surprised they didn't mention high end products like Moment.

So what’s the big difference in Apple Watch  3 vs 4 vs 5?  Always on face isn’t a big deal.

Cellular a big deal for people?

They all have the basic health features... like closing rings, heart rate monitor.

I think the fall detection was introduced with 4... or maybe it’s a software thing.

4 & 5 has the EKG feature

5 has that plus international emergency call and always on display.

Cellular is not a big deal but I like it... it’s saved my butt with making phone calls/texts when I’ve left my phone at home.

Just coming here to say this.  This is what people want, especially the little Hipster and "Children of the '00's" types (what, Generation Z+2?)

My wife works for Apple* and you can be sure of two things:
1) They have people working their asses off on "good products", because of
2) ←, which is pretty much every shit that Steve Jobs has taken has been recorded and is part of Apple training.  They almost have a phobia about drifting from Jobs' philosophy, especially because that's exactly what they did in the 90's (and the era precisely of what Jobs is speaking about in the video)and almost went under because of it.

(*and I'm not an Apple worshiper (though the company's returns have been berry, berry good to us), hell I have an Android phone, much to the chagrin of my family).

Can you use a smartphone as a glorified toy? Absolutely. Can you use it to communicate with people all over the world, take photos and easily share with family, keep up with news, watch porn, use the flashlight to not step on the dog while you get up to take a piss in the middle of the night, watch your favorite films, tv shows and sports, facilitate e-commerce? Absolutely.

apple has a cult following.  they limit their customers choices, call it courage, and the cult defends company as if it were some revolutionary decision instead of the greed play that it is. apple didn't invent the dongle but they perfected the business model.  with their blind customer allegiance, they can act with impunity.  so no, they are not going the way of xerox.

they have good ideas, mostly.  their decision to adopt or reject technology is driven only by how can they stretch out the roll out to get the most sales from product launches.  the unnecessary long delayed roll out of nfc and wireless charging on the iphones are great examples.  their new monitors are a great idea and execution, and then they go and price the stand $1000.  that can do that shit because they know the cult will not blink an eye.

what bugs me the most about them is their absolute desire to limit choices.  want face id? then you can't have fingerprint sensor.  want to listen to headphones, then you have to buy a wireless pair because we will exclude the headphone jack because we have courage.  it's as if every decision is mutually exclusive.  the world isn't binary.  here's a novel idea, give your customers choices, let them decide if they want to use face id or fingerprint sensor, or both. let them decide if they want wired headphone or bluetooth.  or hey, let me provide you with various port options on laptops so that you can decide which port to use rather than here's your one port, now go buy my $69 dongle if you want to use anything else.  everything is a fucking upsell.

anyway, my advice is to not buy this year's iphones.  next year will be a new design and probably with 5G which will future proof your phone.  i say probably because with apple's history on adopting of new tech, you never know.

That is actually why I am updating this time. It’s the same price I pay now and I don’t intend on updating next year. Either 2021 iPhone will be working out the bugs of the 2020 or it will have the features that everyone think are coming next year but don’t materialize until 2021.

i haven't kept up with 5G since i left telecom a few years ago.  last i knew, 5G was very similar to 4G when it first rolled out.  what this means is 5G is not standardized.  each carrier is executing its own 5G network and protocols.  VZ 5G and phones are not compatible with AT&T 5G and phones.  and if it's like 4G, it will be yearrrrrrrrrs before the 5G network is homogeneous between carriers.  no way apple waits until that happens, they didn't with 4G.  this is why you previously had cdma and gsm versions of iphones in the US.

the major issues with 5G are that the network coverage it is tiny, the phone antenna is huge, and it's a battery hog.  every year, all three will improve.  5G is a big enough deal that i would get on it as soon as possible.  you won't notice that big of a difference on your daily usage on your phone but if you tether for work or home, then yea the speed increase will be amazing.

iphone videos are second to none.  there's not even a close second.  soderbergh released a movie shot entirely on an iphone.

will be interesting to see if iphone made up the gap in photography.  google, huawei, and samsung left apple far behind in phone photography.

What would be cooler? Finding an old box of lost photographs, or an old broken smartphone? These phones have created a doubled edged sword to a degree imho. These devices have of course captured a lot of history that otherwise would not have been captured without a camera being available, but is a lot of that history going to be lost forever inside old locked or broken devices?

bro, do you even icloud or google photos?

which brings up another point, instead of worrying that they are lost to time, they are hacked and forever live in some dudes harddrive or worst, in cyberspace.

Wife had an Apple Watch series 4 that she liked but recently lost it (not really her fault, just bad break). I'd like to replace it for her.

My understanding is that series 4 is being discontinued. I don't want to step her back to a series 3, but I don't really see a benefit to series 5 (who cares if the face is always on?).

Any word if series 4 will be discounted on its way out? When and where is the best time to get one?

I don't think you are understanding what Jobs is getting at there. Of course consumers are dumb. They don't understand what they want because they can't fathom what the technology can do next.

It's like saying cell phone users were once saying "dang I wish this was a GPS and computer too". They really weren't asking for this, it wasn't until the technology and engineers pushed the boundaries and tried to put these things in your pocket that it became something people loved.

For some reason Apple is selling a refurb series 4 watch 40 mm GPS/cellular for $549. Best Buy has the same watch listed for $499 brand new.

Maybe the watch was previously owned by Jon Voight.  look for teeth marks on the watch.

This.  The designers/engineers are working with tech that is a couple of years out from hitting the mainstream, stuff that is just pie-in-the-sky stuff to even some of the tech journalists, you know, the guys who keep predicting some piece of tech is going to fail before they get their hands on it.

I was using smartphones (Palm and Pocket PC/Windows Mobile) before the iPhone, as did many co-workers (one of the projects we had involved smartphones, plus we were gadget fanatics).  It was absolutely shit for getting apps and data onto phones, getting stuff off of them, etc.  Not to mention that the carriers were deliberately trying to lock down smartphones back then, so that they could nickel-and-dime you on stupid shit - want to get a VGA-resolution photo you took off your phone and onto your computer?  Install our proprietary software and buy our proprietary cable and then use our proprietary service that might charge you per photo!  Want to install a custom ringtone, it's gonna cost you!

None of us wold have recommended the pre-iPhone smartphones to our parents.  That's not to say that we didn't have an idea of what we wanted - while many of us missed the boat on the notion of touchscreen keyboards, we wanted an easy (and cheap) way to get apps, music, etc. on the phone, to get photos off the phone, to share contact information, quick and easy email, better text-messaging, etc.  But that's because we were using those Palms and Pocket PC and Blackberry phones, and ran into their limitations on a daily basis, and saw where they could be improved.

But my mom, sister, etc. that were using Ye Olde Flip-phones/candybars, etc., had no idea of how useful an smartphone could be.  But once they got their hands on them, they wouldn't go back.

Touch ID will not be on Iphone 11s.  Rumors are that it will return on 2020 models.
