2020 Baseball Cheaters vs the World Thread of Hate

The constant outrage and sanctimony (and hyperbole) of guys like Passan and Olney and Drellich and Kaplan, who have been pushing out basically the exact same article several times a day for over a month, had nothing to do with this, I'm certain. They had a story that didn't require them to think and they've milked it for all it has been worth. What a surprise that it has whipped everyone into a frenzy.

Seriously.  Passan's been one of the main instigators fanning the flames of anger, and now he wants to tell people when their anger's gone too far, too?

If someone does get hurt because of this, I hope Jeff Passan never has another good night's sleep in his life.

Don’t see the relevance anyway. The Astros had comically low strikeout rates the past few years because of their cheating. The Yankees had crazy high K rates, that alone should tell you everything.

This will be telling.  I am an Astros fan that agrees they get no benefit of doubt allowed and they should take their lumps.  If strike out rates for Altuve, Bregman and Gurriel skyrocket, that will speak for itself.

But I am also perfectly fine at laughing off jackasses like Bellinger, Judge and Markakis, the first two who couldn’t hit for shit against us in 2017.

So, yeah, it’s bad, but pardon me if I have a world record size eye roll at those guys bitching.

So given there will be no benefit of doubt and can’t control outrage or win any PR battles, both real and ridiculous, Astros need to grey rock everyone with an agreed scripted answer/mantra every time someone asks them about anything related to the scandal: “We are sorry. Probably more sorry about getting caught.  But we also understand people are upset and will be for a long time.  We have no control over that now.  Each person will have to deal with it in there own time and own way.  All we can do is play ball and win.”  Just put that on repeat through hoisting the commissioner trophy in late October.

If they ask whether World Series should be voided/censured, repeat it.  If they ask if they did things after 2017.  Say “No.” Then repeat it.  If they ask about how careers were ruined (laughable), repeat it.

Classic arsonist fireman.  Hypocrite given what he wrote in 2017.

Not to mention the lede on that article was the complete opposite of his reaction to the Yankees/Red Sox incident in 2017. He’s a hypocritical fraud.

True and sports “journalists” are the worst. Wannabes with chips on their shoulders who’d never make it in the real world or as a player, GM or coach.

So you know how some losers hate on the guy that’s rich and gets all the chicks?   The Astros aren’t the rich guy getting a lot of ass.  You’re the College sophomore buying booze for underage chicks hoping to get laid. You’re not the cool bad guy everyone is jealous of.  You’re the creep who’s never done shit that people find repulsive

You are way overthinking this, bro.

It's baseball and sign stealing. Cheating in this sport is as old as the sport itself. It's never going away, either.

Maybe 50 years ago. Today? They'll be protected. Opponents will need to be subtle if they want to get away with it.

It will be interesting to see how many fights the Astros get into this year.

On second thought everyone hates the stros because they’re the new Yankees.

I'm not sure whether you really want to converse about why everyone hates the Astros, but I'll weigh in. I think it is a combination of things.

1) Lunhow et al. rubbed baseball people the wrong way since they took over in 2012. The degree to which they stripped the entire organization down to the studs to rebuild was seen as "bad for baseball." They became the poster organization for "tanking."

2) Lunhow et al. became more unpopular with their nontraditional methods of operations. There was the Brady Aiken thing. They dramatically reduced their scouting dept (essentially replacing traditional scouts with data scientists). Etc. There have been rumblings for years that people didn't trust the organization.

3) They got good. They made the playoffs 4 of the last 5 years, including 3 straight 100-win seasons, 2 AL pennants and a WS title. They knocked out some large-market teams along the way. I know your argument is that the team's success is not the reason that everyone hates them, but I'd argue that it is a reason.

4) The players can come off as cocky, particularly Bregman and Correa. A lot of people disliked Bregman in particular before any of the sign-stealing stuff came to light.

5) The Osuna acquisition rubbed people the wrong way. It confirmed what had been bugging people about Lunhow/Astros for years - that they are cold, data-driven efficiency specialists that lacked baseball morals (whatever those are).

6) The Taubman thing - not so much the doucebag himself acting like, well, a douchebag, but the clumsy attempted cover-up. That rubbed people the wrong way.

7) And finally the electronic sign-stealing thing itself.

I think the level of vitriol over the last 6 weeks is due to a combination of all of these things. I think a lot of baseball writers (looking at you, Buster Olney) have been waiting to stick it to Lunhow/Astros for a while (due to #1, 2, 5, 6 above), and they certainly got their chance. And, boy, they did not miss it.

I think only a few clubs would have been lambasted to this extent if they were the ones caught; I don't think everyone would hate the Tigers or the Mariners if it came out that they were stealing signs 3 years ago. So yeah, their success has something to do with it.

I get the hate. They broke the rule and got caught.

But I also think the reaction has been exaggerated and overblown. I think that is because of the factors listed above as well as the absurd volume of coverage it has gotten. It's been the only story in baseball for 6 weeks, and really nothing new has come out since it first broke. Another opposing player saying he is angry at the Astros just isn't really a story, but the writers will be damned if they won't make it one. It has kept everyone's outrage top of mind.

I can understand why fans of other teams hate them. As an Astros fan, I can say I was 100% on board with tanking, confused about the Aiken thing (though it worked out well), not terribly pleased with the Osuna or Taubman stuff, and disappointed in the sign-stealing scheme. Not so disappointed that I'll disown the team (as if anyone would give a shit), but somewhat disappointed. That said, I do think the hate is amplified by the listed factors + the absurd and exaggerated coverage it has received.

Good summary.  I especially agree that a lot of traditional baseball media have wanted to get Luhnow for a long time.

Luhnow is an enigma to me. I never felt anything but the "In Luhnow We Trust" thing for him and, from outward appearances and interviews, he seemed like a likable family man and a solid dude. He never came off in interviews as a particularly arrogant or the egotistical "smartest guy in the room" type, but apparently he must have rubbed some people the wrong way. Or, maybe he hired guys like Taubman who became more vocal and representative of the organization as arrogant pricks. I really don't know what the truth is about him. I think a lot of baseball people resented him because he came in and wiped the slate with the old guard scouting types and hired a bunch of math nerds to replace them while alienating the media by reminding fucksticks like Drellich that they were smarter than him. Meanwhile, the older/dorky smarmy fucks wanted to play hero in front of the Alyson Footers and Julia Moraleses against the organization douchebros.

I wonder what the depth of Luhnow's role was in all of this.

I had the pleasure of meeting Luhnow several times. He never came across as a douche or egotistical asshole. I found him to be a very personable guy. Educated and cosmopolitan - he grew up in Mexico City and is fluent in Spanish. The guys he had under him like Taubman had Ivy League educational pedigrees and would be working on Wall Street if they weren’t in baseball.

He was a disruptor and created the best and most advanced organization in baseball. Old school baseball guys jealous by our success and losers like Drellich had it out for us. Drellich in particular has a massive inferiority complex which is well deserved considering he couldn’t hold the jockstrap of Luhnow and his team when it came to accomplishments and pedigree. It is not hyperbole to say Luhnow’s firing is an absolute tragedy. The guy responsible for the best teams in Houston sports history deserved a lot better. Luhnow understands loyalty and has the back of our players, Crane and the organization unlike Hinch and that rat Fiers. My respect and admiration for him has grown with how he has handled everything and kept his mouth shut. He will have no problem bouncing back. Any consulting firm, investment bank, etc would jump to have him come aboard and pay him millions.

You've already dropped this horrifically dumbass take in the Astros thread, so I have no idea why you thought it would be a good idea to drop it here, too, other than the fact that you're a complete and total moron.
