Texas Recruiting Notes 2022 - Idiotic Slapfights Unrelated To 2022 Recruiting

Top 3 pass catching receivers from each year from Texas

2020 - None

2019 - None

2018 - Lodge again

2017 - Lodge but he was  highly rated

2016 - Quincy Adeboyejo only second tier prospect the last 5 years for Ole Miss

2021 Recruiting class has JJ Henry out of McKinney North as a second tier maybe even third tier.

That's a good point. I'd rephrase that as they recruit them hard - even if the hit rate is low.

Can you two pedantic erudites take your Stanford academics discussion to the non-UT recruiting thread? Fuck me. We're discussing hair styles, WRs, and retired ballerinas here, for Christ's sake.

This is what happens when the commit announcements run dry.  Today it's "Stanfraud sucks", tomorrow it'll be "Surly's tips for knitting" and before we know it people will be digging up the German porn classic "Alle männlichen Cheerleader essen Scheiße bei Kyle Field" and holding watch parties.  No one wants this...

IT on Sebastian Cheeks

Spoiler

LB Sebastian Cheeks, Evanston Township (Evanston, IL) (2022):

What we’re watching for with the composite .9492 Notre Dame lean is if the Domers will ultimately have room for him.

It’s hard to fathom they wouldn’t, but our ND insiders say it could go either way at this point. Cheeks is scheduled to visit Austin in June. If you’re Pete Kwiatkowski and Jeff Choate, hang around the rim and find out what he likes about ND and sell whatever overlaps at Texas (tradition, academics, etc).

Cheeks is a difference-maker at the next level. Besides Notre Dame, Michigan is a school to watch as well.

(Super K) Jovantae Barnes Visiting Texas

Spoiler

We’ve been covering 2022 4-star RB, Jovantae Barnes for a little while. He’s one of the Sooners top two running back targets. I was in Vegas to see Barnes and at that time, Texas didn’t seem to be involved.

However, I do know that Barnes’ coach is close to Sarkisian. In fact, while I was with him in Vegas, there was a point where he was on the phone with coach Sark.

Barnes was planning on taking his official visit to Oklahoma on June 18th-20th. And, we kind of got the sense that if all we went well, the Sooners could land him.

However, Barnes tells me he has changed his plans. Instead of doing official visits, this summer he plans on taking what he calls a “field trip” of visits around the country.

“I know of wanted to take my visits in June as unofficials then drop my top schools and go from there”.

Well, Barnes tells me that Texas will actually be his first stop. He and his coach will be flying into Austin on June 18th. It sounds like they will stay there for the evening and visit Texas. They will then head up to OU on the 19th and spend a day there before heading off to other visits (Alabama, Florida, etc.).

I don’t know how big of a player Texas can become in this one. I imagine now that they know he will visiting, coach Drayton and B Harris will be trying to build the relationship. Then, hope they can make a good first impression and get him back on campus for an official visit.

Right now the main schools in the mix, as far as I could tell from him were OU and USC with Florida possibly in there as well. Barnes is originally from Florida.

We will monitor this one.

No one really knows what’s going to happen when the dead period ends. Why commit somewhere that you’re yet to visit to a staff you haven’t seen coach a game yet? Why decommit from somewhere else until you can see other places for yourself?

Right.

Most of the recruits don't really know where they want to go right now.

Recruiting  '22 has a long way to  go.

Spoiler

— I was at Tyler Legacy today and checked in on four-star running back Jamarion Miller. I believe any hope between Texas and Miller is fading quickly. As of now, I'm not sure the Longhorns would even get a visit from him. In talking to sources near him, it seems that there just isn't a lot of interest there and it could possibly go back to the previous staff. There are also some questions as to where he stands for Texas currently with Jaydon Blue on board and the Longhorns chasing a few others. At the moment, Oklahoma State and Alabama are creating some distance and he's looking into a few other programs for visits this summer. On the same token, we continue to hear that Texas is in a strong position for Tavorus Jones, so it might not matter in the end.

— Speaking of speedy wide receiver prospects, I've heard some increasing buzz when it comes to Texas and Brenen Thompson as of late. The Texas coaching staff is doing a great job connecting with Thompson and his mother and I believe it is making an impact in his recruitment. Nick has a great relationship with Thompson and his family and was in Lubbock tonight to see him run in a track meet. He will have an in-depth report in the morning to look out for.

Well I would trust Nick Harris on Thompson. Any reporter that actually bothers to go to Lubbock to watch his track meet is going to be in family’s good graces. Not much should come out of left field here.

What's the latest with Thompson's track times? Was the latest 10.55 something we think is accurate, or was it more like the apparently bullshit hand timed 10.3? He's much less interesting as a 10.70 guy than as a 10.30 guy

(Mike Roach) Longhorns poised to thrive in recruiting with on-campus visits this summer

Spoiler

News broke earlier this week that the NCAA is expected to end the dead period that has been in effect since the COVID-19 brought the world to a halt last March. While the 2021 cycle had to make decisions without the benefit of official visits, it appears the 2022 class won’t have to.

For Texas, this news could provide an additional boost to recruiting. Steve Sarkisian’s staff has been able to perform so far on the recruiting trail but opening the campus for face-to-face visits would allow Texas to use all of its resources. The last time a visitor was on campus hosted by coaches was Camar Wheaton on the last day that visits were allowed.

On-campus visits will help Texas because of everything they have to sell. For the last few months, prospects have been learning about the schematics of the Texas offense and defense, but Austin is a huge selling point in and of itself. The state capital features natural beauty along with the fast-paced life of a big city, while the improvements made to Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium are sure to wow any prospect.

This news is also notable for two new employees hired by Steve Sarkisian and his staff. While Taylor Searels and Courtney Helom weren’t met with the fanfare of Jeff Banks or Pete Kwiatkowski, both are important pieces of the puzzle. Searels serves as Director of Recruiting Operations while Helom works with her as Coordinator or Recruiting Operations.

While it’s tough to pin their title down to just one job, a large part of their responsibilities revolve around planning and executing big official visit weekends. Both ladies are seen as rising stars in the recruiting field with SEC experience in recruiting. Searels grew up in a football family as the daughter of longtime college offensive line coach Stacy Searels. She lived part of her time in Austin when her father worked under Mack Brown and returned to work for Sarkisian.

Searels worked as a student recruiting assistant at Auburn before moving on to be an on-campus recruiting coordinator at Vanderbilt. Her job includes a large presence on social media promoting the program, keeping in communication with prospects and parents, planning visits and overall recruiting strategies and overseeing a staff of assistants.

Helom graduated from Alabama where she worked as a strength and conditioning intern for several women’s sports during her time in Tuscaloosa. She went on to accept a position with the University of Kentucky as a recruiting assistant where she fulfilled many of the same roles that Searels did. She comes to Texas in the same role and should help the Longhorns put together a robust on-campus experience for recruits and their families.

Steve Sarkisian and his coaches are known for their recruiting prowess at other stops, but on-campus visits mean that the Longhorns will be able to use their full arsenal of weapons in recruiting.

Nick Harris:  Texas making up ground in race for four-star athlete Brenen Thompson

Spoiler

Texas making up ground in race for four-star athlete Brenen Thompson

Nick Harris

LUBBOCK, Texas — Last year before the COVID-19 shutdown, Spearman (Texas) athlete Brenen Thompson was able to put up track times in just three meets that ended up being enough for him to land dozens of offers and recruiting attention from across the country.

After posting a 10.38 100-meter time last track season, Thompson is focused on just staying consistent as he operates this track season with a new target on his back and a banged up ankle.

"I'm really just trying to maintain that speed," Thompson said. "Get faster each week even with the ankle situation. It's really not a bad situation, it's something I can run on and compete on but I'm just trying to stay healthy."

Thompson took first place in the 100-meter and 200-meter events at Lubbock-Cooper High School at the 3A area track meet. If Thompson is able to advance past the regional meet next week in Abilene, he will be making a trip to Austin for the state meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

"I'm trying to compete and put up the best times I can," he said. "Not only that but me and my family are about to go and see Austin while we're there and just get around."

On the recruitment side of things, Thompson has had a busy spring fielding calls, but in recent weeks he has taken a slight step back to focus on the track season.

"It's been real busy so I've taken a break from social media and all of the coaches for a little bit," he said. "Just focusing on this and school but definitely talking to some coaches here and there."

In June, Thompson will start his visit tour as it will open with an official visit to Oklahoma State on June 9-11. He will follow that up with two unofficial visits to Texas and Texas A&M before taking official visits to Texas, Texas A&M, Alabama and Clemson during the fall.

With Texas, head coach Steve Sarkisian and wide receivers coach Andre Coleman have shown a lot of interest in Thompson and the interest is starting to be reciprocated.

"It's been real good," he said. "It's a great staff and I've been through some of their offensive stuff on Zoom's and I just can't wait for them to start putting up numbers."

Texas has been able to pitch a solid track program to Thompson as well as he looks forward to seeing more behind-the-scenes during his unofficial visit to Texas June 18-20 in both the football and track programs.

Despite Clemson holding the edge in the 247Sports Crystal Ball, the Tigers' momentum has slowed as regional schools Oklahoma State and Texas have made their way to the front of the pack. Texas A&M and Alabama remain a threat as this recruitment will begin to see some separation once again following visits this summer and fall. I have lowered my confidence score to a 2 for Clemson to land Thompson.

At 5-foot-10, 165 pounds, Thompson is the No. 86 recruit in the country for the class of 2022, according to 247Sports Composite. He is the No. 8 athlete in the country and the No. 16 recruit in the state of Texas.

Darius Terrell offers his thoughts on the June official visitors

Spoiler

“Too Early” Official Visitors Breakdown

There’s not a ton going on right now from an action standpoint on the recruiting trail, but schools are positioning themselves with players for this to be the biggest summer of recruiting in recent memory.

Texas has set up officials in the month of June with a majority of their main targets and I thought I’d take some time this week to share my opinion on where things currently stand with the Longhorns and these guys.

*denotes Texas commit

June 4-6

Brown is the lone ranger so far for this weekend, although I do expect for that to change in the coming weeks.

JACK/X-Backer Derrick Brown (Texarkana, TX) – I believe that CJ has been up to Texarkana and visited with Brown not long ago. It’s great news that Texas is getting the first crack at him, as it is our current belief at TFB that Texas may be trailing slightly at this point. A big first impression on his visit could hold major weight.

June 11-13

Just reading the tea leaves, Texas seems to likely want to get guys that are from similar areas and backgrounds on campus with each other in an attempt to find common interests in a potential new “home away from home.”

WR Evan Stewart (Frisco, TX) – The former Texas commit has his official visits lined up and the Longhorns will have him on campus with what appears to be a slightly more intimate group so that he can be the center of attention. I personally have a hard time seeing him back in the fold without any games being played yet on the field.

OG Cole Hutson (Frisco, TX) – I really think that Hutson is open to all of his favorites, but Texas has a chance to really knock this one out of the park when he visits. I don’t see Hutson entering next Fall uncommitted to a program.

JACK Anthony Jones (Las Vegas, NV) – As K reported previously, Jones was previously committed to Coach Kwiatkowski at Washington. He wasted no time locking in this official after getting the Texas offer and right now things are sure looking good for the Longhorns here.

LB Robby Snelling (Reno, NV) – Snelling is a new name to myself and I’ve got a message out to him on a few different platforms in hopes of connecting for an update. The urgency in which he set up his Texas official (he tweeted out the off on April 5th) is encouraging.

June 18-20

This is the weekend that’s looking like the biggest weekend of the entire summer. Texas will have their commits on campus and a few of their remaining main targets that they’re looking to close on.

DB Bryce Anderson (Beaumont, TX) – K has a report up from this week about Bryce’s decision to push back his announcement after originally planning to commit on April 9th. We still believe that Texas is in a good spot here.

OL Kelvin Banks (Humble, TX) – Banks has stated on numerous occasions now that he grew up a Texas fan and his father has voiced similar affinities. That certainly doesn’t mean everything, but it has to count for something. Banks is down to his final 5 and Texas has as good of a shot as anyone.

CB Terrence Brooks (Plano, TX) – K has an update posted this week on the state’s top Cornerback prospect and the vibes are very positive right now with Texas and Brooks. He’s a kid that plays thing close to vest and I don’t expect him to decide prior to next season, but Texas could really make strides towards closing this deal if they can blow Brooks away on his official.

CB Denver Harris (Houston, TX) – I’ve felt like Harris would likely end up at Texas dating back to the Tom Herman days, which should tell you all a lot. I’ve still yet to hear anything that changes my stance on that. Alabama, LSU, and to a lesser extent, Texas A&M, aren’t going anywhere.

RB Tavorus Jones (El Paso, TX) – Texas and Stan Drayton were Jones’ first offer over a year ago. Fast forward to now and Jones has never ceased or slowed communication with Texas and right now they are his only scheduled official, although he wants to take others. I’m still not sure how Jones and Jaydon Blue feel about being in the same class together.

RB Jaydon Blue (Klein, TX)* – Speaking of Jaydon Blue, he is scheduled to be on campus at the same time as Jones and the hope is that the two hit it off. Blue committed very early for a player of his status and it shouldn’t come as a surprise at all for Texas fans to see him take visits elsewhere at some point.

WR Armani Winfield (Lewisville, TX)* – See Jaydon Blue. I don’t mean to set off any alarms whatsoever, but I can’t pretend like I haven’t noticed that Winfield removed “Texas Commit” from his Twitter bio following his performance at the UA Camp. In my experience of doing this, that is often a major sign. If Winfield sees and hears what he wants during his visit it should go a long way towards patching up any potential chinks in his commitment armor.

QB Maalik Murphy (Gardena, CA)* – Murphy is locked in and will be on campus doing his best to recruit on the Longhorns’ behalf.

DB BJ Allen (Aledo, TX)* – By all accounts, Allen is locked in and focused on his Senior season and getting his younger brother some attention.

DL Kristopher Ross (Houston, TX)* – The most recent Texas commitment is locked in.

June 25-27

This weekend is shaping up early as a weekend for defensive recruits. I’m sure we will see more names added to this weekend in the coming weeks.

DT Aaron Bryant (Southaven, MS) – Bryant is apparently a big target for Bo Davis and he’s reciprocating the interest. Bryant recently released a Top 10, so Texas has to at least be in the top half of that grouping since they’re getting an official.

LB Ish Harris (Pilot Point, TX) – Ish Harris likes Texas. Chatter is that Texas A&M and Oklahoma are ahead of Texas in his recruitment. I agree that Texas A&M is probably the favorite at this stage. Visits will be crucial for Harris.

JACK Justice Finkley (Trussville, AL) – The physical defender from the Deep South has officials set up to Colorado (6/11) and Michigan (6/18) prior to his visit to Austin. If he makes it to town, Texas will have a puncher’s chance. He’s a rarity in that he’s a top-rated defender from the South but doesn’t seem locked in to the SEC.

CB Jaylon Guilbeau (Port Arthur, TX)* – At one point Guilbeau was close to re-opening his recruitment. That talk has died down substantially since Terry Joseph and Blake Gideon were hired. I believe Guilbeau is locked in.

LOL at thinking that Spearman is near Lubbock.

Edit: Leaving this because I'm an idiot and didn't read Harris's article where he says the track meet was in Lubbock.
