Las Vegas go hard or go home thread

Recommended Posts

We hit up STK on Saturday. It was a great atmosphere and the food was on point. Hit up SpeedVegas and raced super cars. Gambled a ton. We stayed at Aria in the Sky Suites and we really enjoyed Aria and it was  actually pretty convenient to a lot of other properties. Sports book at Aria is trash though.

Eater Vegas on Lotus of Siam:

Fans of Saipin Chutima’s northern Thai cuisine may soon be able to return to the original location in the Commercial Center. Lotus of Siam plans to reopen the restaurant more than two years after it closed following the collapse of its rain-soaked roof on East Sahara Avenue.

Some of the new touches to the space include carpets, wallpaper, and a waiting area for customers at the front. Penny Chutima tells the Las Vegas Review-Journal that a shuttle between the two restaurants will escort customers who don’t want to wait for a table. Lotus of Siam certainly is known as one of the toughest restaurant reservations in town, with weekends booked far in advance. The restaurant, tentatively planning a Dec. 2 return, plans to serve lunch and dinner on weekdays, and only dinner on Saturdays and Sundays.

Back in 2017, Lotus of Siam opened in the former Roy’s Restaurant space on Flamingo Road. At the time, Breslin Builders renovated the 7,921-square-foot space with a new wall to close off the open kitchen, plus new paint, flooring, equipment, upgrades to the existing bar and the creation of a new wine room in the private dining area to house the extensive wine collection.

The East Flamingo location offers about half the space of the original that spans 17,000 square feet in the Commercial Center. Both locations will remain open.

Yes SW does have direct flights from Love. They might not be cheaper than AA from DFW. Generally, the Friday/Sunday AM flights tend to be more expensive and during the week just varies based on the convention and sports schedule for Vegas. Vegas stays fairly busy year round with some off times like the week leading up to Christmas.

If you have any specific time in mind, we can try to give some feedback.

What's the best time to buy airline tickets (out of Dallas) for Vegas?  I'm assuming SW has flights from Love Field.

We went mid-late April this year and it was cheap flights if you're willing to leave early or late. I always like to fly early since traffic is non-existent and it's easy to get an Uber out to the airports or back. Got a great rate on the 2 story suite at Golden Nugget which was a lot of fun. Weather was low 70s at night to high 70s/ low 80s during the day. I think April just might be the best time to go from that standpoint.

I'm getting on this project a bit late; going to CES.  Some questions.

1) Is it worth the $600 extra for the "Starter Conference Pass?  It gets you:

Take your CES experience to the next level with access to specially curated tracks on the hottest emerging trends, including artificial intelligence and 5G.

What's included:

Exhibitor show floor
Keynote addresses*
SuperSessions*
20+ conference tracks including Research Summit, Innovation Policy, C Space Storytellers, Sports Tech and more*
4 curated tracks highlighting the hottest emerging trends, including artificial intelligence and 5G*

2) How many days does it take to get through it?  Can we do it in 2 whole days?

3) I'll do some checking, but I assume there aren't hotel rooms available on the strip. Planet Hollywood Westgate has been recommended as an alternative.  Good idea?

Friend is asking for a recommendation for an "awesome Vegas experience" dinner restaurant for a group of 7 guys going for March Madness this year.  What are the current go-to places?

You could probably name a place in every category of food if something in particular they are looking for, but the easiest answer for 7 guys is STK.

My wife is making me go to Vegas for my 40th in a couple months. We're trying to find a place for a birthday dinner with a group of 10-14. A local friend suggested Rose.Rabbit.Lie. Has anyone been lately? How is the food/show experience? Any other suggestions for a mid-size group friendly restaurant?

I was not a fan of Rose Rabbit Lie. Food was good but show was more of a distraction than entertaining. Nothing worse than trying to have a conversation and the fat singer sneaks up behind you and sticks the mic in your face mid song.

As mentioned above, STK is great and either that size of a group you can get a private room. The top floor of Delano (connected to Mandalay Bay) has a cool restaurant with a cool lounge with great views next door. Can’t remember name of restaurant but lounge is called Sky I think.

Not sure how casual or fancy you are looking for but I’ve suggested this place once before to someone on here looking for a good spot for a big group dinner (and they said it worked great for them): Battista’s Hole in the Wall. It’s right behind the Cromwell, center strip. Been there since 1970. Casual place used to catering to groups in a festive atmosphere. Very affordable relative to other Strip options.

Looking to head back for the Wife's Birthday (no Pics) next month.  We usually say at the Aria.  Like it for its location, vibe and we have never had a sub par experience in the times we have stayed there.

Thinking about switching to the Wynn for a change up.  I keep hearing and reading that its overly smokey and musty smelling these days compared to other spots on the strip.  Might be a deal killer.  Any thoughts on if it is bad as I am hearing?  I know its Vegas, but if it is overtly bad comparatively speaking, then I would look to other properties.

Used to be the opposite.  I remember the first time I went in there (years and years ago) being struck with how amazingly clear the air was compared to everywhere else I'd been in Vegas.  In fact, it was one of the reasons it became our go-to in Vegas.

Last trip there (late June of last year), I didn't notice it being overly smokey.  I did notice it's got a definite dinge on it and is really starting to feel worn, but wasn't struck with the smokiness more than any other place there.  And I would normally notice that.  And my wife and my buddy's wife who was with us definitely would have noticed.

I think you should be fine, but that said, if you get there and find it smokey, don't blame me.  I believe you are right that I've seen others complaining about it since I was there last June.  So, maybe it's gotten bad?  You'd think there has to be a certain threshold of just how much smoke those places can take through the years before it starts to become noticeable.

I saw one picture online in mid-December that looked like Wynn was changing out the carpets. If so, that should help out with smells in the near-term. You could call the Wynn to ask them if they swapped out all the carpeting in December. Otherwise I don’t think they have a poor setup relative to other casinos which would make it more smokey. Also fun to stay at different properties and try out new (to you) restaurants etc

Going in a few weeks. Where is the best place for weed?

I went to reef which is off the strip and probably 5-10% more expensive than some of the others but the experience was something else.  I think there is one closer to park mgm near the strip that I will probably go to during March madness.

Also note, that while it’s legal to buy and possess there, you can’t smoke in public (including casinos) or casino hotel rooms for now. Not that its uncommon, but you would want to be discreet while doing it in public, or walking the strip.

Planet 13 is the largest dispensary in Vegas. I bought vape pens so I could stealth smoke in public. There is a new tasting lounge at NuWu where you can smoke. I'm sure if you get away from the strip you'll find locals pricing.

Four-night trip coming up. Staying at The Cosmo.

Gonna wander the AVN expo while we’re there. Tattoo by Mike Roche (from TSOL) at  Hart & Huntington. Will check out Brian Slagel’s new record store. Y&T concert on our last night there.

Was too slow to secure a res at Lotus Of Siam, but I think The Cosmo food options should cover our needs nicely.

My favorite gambling activity consists of Craps sessions broken up by repeated rounds at Whiskey Down. No real mandatory stops other than that.

A simple trip. Tattoos, Porn, and Rock & Roll. Vegas, baby!

Good to know.

I was leaning toward Chang’s restaurant at Cosmo, but wife (no pics) overruled with a request for Morimoto. Hard to argue with that request.

Last time I was out there I had an old tat covered up at LV Tattoo on Fremont. Don't remember the artist's name, but he was really good and put a lot of care into the tat being accurate because it was a military award (Cutterman's pin). It turned out fantastic.

Sunday Feb 2 is the Super Bowl so that weekend will be busy and obviously game day will be a lot of activity around all the sports books in each casino. There are special watch parties like at Encore beach club and the big DJs are usually in town like Tiesto at Hakassan at MGM Grand on that Saturday night.

Booked 5 nights at Wynn in July; first time at the Wynn for us.

Plan this trip is to leave the property as little as possible.  Years and countless trips find us bouncing from place to place; we decided this trip we were going to stay put.

Mobile IV drip places that will come to your hotel and give you a bag of saline and vitamins can be a lifesaver

Any rankings you guys can give on the shows? I heard the Cirque Beatles show is pretty badass. Never seen one live and want to change that.
