So we hired an OC from the Buckeyes with six years of OC experience at Okie State with 4 top ten offenses in that time. And we hired a DC that won a national title (with Herman) at Ohio State and was thought highly enough he became a head coach (although that didn't go so well). If I weren't a Texas fan, I would think all of this seemed pretty good. But since I am a Texas fan, I am just left to wonder how we will screw up this seemingly good situation.22 points

Jerry Jones hiring Barry Switzer, and Bud Adams moving the Oilers gave me the opportunity to cut the NFL out of my life. Had the Texans drafted Vince, they might have reeled me back in, but, of course (it's Houston), they didn't. I'm glad to have Sundays free.19 points

So, an epilogue to my input above: Just dropped her off with her mother (mom gets the second 1/2 of the holiday break this year). We went down into Denver to see the lights on the City & County building after dinner before heading to mom's. A few shenanigans there, but overall just a nice little bow on the whole Christmas experience with her. On the drive from Denver, in an attempt to just make/continue light conversation, I asked her what her favorite part of the whole Christmas season was. I expected to hear "going to the Nutcracker", or "The presents", or "the time off school", or the candy, the food, or any of the other normal things one would expect from a 9 yr old. I was expecting that. A quiet little voice from the back seat answered, "Just being with you Dads". When I got her out of the car, she ran around and wrapped her arms around me. This is not normal for her. She's a big hugger, but she never initiates. She always waits to hear, "Gimme a hug." before letting loose. I picked her up, and she had tears running from her little eyes. She didn't want it to end. I walked in the door about 30 minutes ago. My house has never felt this empty. She's been at her mom's for just over a half hour, and I miss her like she's been gone a year. I am sitting her bawling my eyes out right now. Partly because I miss her, but mostly because I am so very thankful that I was able to help create something this magical and this meaningful for her. Best. Christmas. Ever. Nothing else can even come close. ....and to all, a good night.10 points

Amy says this is clearly 2% milk in her coffee, not skim, and that you had better go get her a new one before she pours this one all over your stupid fucking head too late she already did it and spit on you.8 points

i'm not defending dennison for his posts on that thread, but i do not think having an honest discussion about guns in church is a political discussion. i'll discuss this in a subsequent post. i also note that every time one of these shooting happens, the daily texan thread is full of people who are all in on ccl and good guys with guns, etc, and that's an okay area of discussion. we also let comments like "religion of peace" go when it's a muslim attack. i just find that the loudest complainers of "cloak rooming bada bing" don't see the plank in their own eye when it comes to politicizing things. please note this is just my stupid opinion, and opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one, and it's full of shit.8 points

The fact that this stupid shit has any likes speaks to the volume of mouth breathers on the main football board. We have seen all too well what happens when we relied solely on our on the field success while lacking good recruiters on this staff. Or perhaps you just slept through 2009 until Strong took over? It’s not an either/or situation. Great programs do both and we need to do both well to compete against Oklahoma again.7 points

My daughter has been through some shit she has no fault in, no input into and no way of avoiding. A few years back, as my divorce was just beginning I started a new tradition with her. Every year we dressed to the nines, and we will go see The Nutcracker at the Ellie Caulkins Opera house in Denver, followed by a really nice dinner at a very nice/fancy restaurant. Just got home 2 hours ago from this year's extravaganza. We giggled, and made jokes, we talked and talked, and then giggled some more, we got caught up in the magic and wonderment of Christmas, we watched a really good ballet, we giggled again, we ate like Kings/Queens, we giggled again, we went through one hell of a sugar rush, and then crashed out HARD less than 3 minutes after walking in the front door. Watching her with her little mouth agape while being caught up in the whimsy of the ballet, and seeing her hands involuntarily moving in artistic circles like she was directing the orchestra itself was absolute magic to me. Christmas long ago stopped being about the magic for myself. 9 years ago it started being about MAKING the magic for her, which of course directly translates into it being magic for me. What comes around goes around and all that. Tonight I was blessed again to be able to make some of that magic for her and with her. I pray to God that when the Alzheimers, or dementia, or whatever else comes to take my mind from me, that the last memory to leave me is the memory of tonight with my little girl.7 points

When’s the last time a junior QB with minimal draft expectations and a new OC coming in chose to stay in school and actually elevated his draft stock during his senior year?6 points

This is the general point I was trying to make yesterday and hopefully this post isn't cloaky. I'd discussed this with my wife last night because she hadn't heard about it yet. Her immediate reaction (after the oh nos, how many?) was, "oh you would've shot that guy no question." It was the perfect time to reinforce restraint and responsibility (she wants a CCL, I've convinced her she's not ready) so I quickly replied, "not necessarily." My explanation was that the only way (from the video) I would've even drawn is if we were sitting in those top rows with the shooter. The only reason I'd consider firing is once he turned back towards the crowd. Any other situation in where we're seated, I'm getting my family down and/or out as soon as possible. Again the risk for something to go wrong is increasing with each action you take carrying a gun. To Zepol's point, most of those you see at the end pulling their gats out when the shooter has already been neutralized with at least 2 armed individuals approaching to ensure the threat is no more, those are not "good guys with guns." Those people are crash dummies that are trying to fulfill their one fantasy of the time they got to pull they 9 out, and shouldn't be allowed to carry. I can understand having it out pointed towards the ground in one hand, cell phone with 911 in the other, and keeping your head on a swivel for any other threats if you're a member of the church's security team. All that other shit is playing cowboy. TLDR-- not all of us who carry are Yosemite Sam or wannabe LEO/ military and know you need to "flight" at all costs before you consider a "fight."6 points

I agree. He clearly shoots himself by aiming his shotgun towards a far wall in front of him and ricocheting a bullet into the side of his head, the same side facing the green-clad parishioner aiming a gun at him and miming the motion of firing a gun and having it recoil, complete with a muzzle flash from the blank he must have fired.6 points

This concludes our test of the Greenspoint Alert System. If this had been an actual Game Over, you would have been instructed on where to tune in your area for news and information.5 points

So he does have evidence then. You basically admit that it's stupid to think a position coach would be offered before the coordinator was hired, and yet you're asking for evidence that Samples wasn't offered last week. Jesus fuck you're a beating lately.5 points

Sorry, but offering what I feel comfortable with at this time. I told you guys long before he was a household name in recruiting that Evans was going to be a fucking epic cartoon of a recruitment, and I'm passing along a similar but different warning about the scene coming up with Wheaton. If Texas gets him, I'll be all for it, if that helps.5 points

Yes. I've never wavered in the belief that he signs with Texas. Hermanticles the Impostor and his merry band of dildos have done their level best to fuck up the recruitment, but Texas still believes he's committed.5 points

It is incredibly efficient to kill with a gun and ridiculously cheap and easy to obtain one. The pro-gun culture ensures that, which results in guns being the method of choice when a nutjob wants to go out with a bang. Note the murderer did not use a class 3 firearm when he attacked this church. It would have been more efficient, and he would have had a better chance in that church while being outgunned. Why? Because he couldn't run down the block, plunk down $200 and have the ability to put one under his coat before walking into that church. The NRA and 2nd amendment folks oppose sensible gun reform (like red flag laws, waiting periods, etc...) at every turn. Please feel free to educate me with sources where they are being proactive about keeping guns out of the hands of people that have no business owning them. The most I have ever seen is lip service towards universal background checks. I'm a gun owner and have hunted all my life. My wife and I have our concealed-carry permits. I own a pump .22, Glock .40, two SigSauer P238s, a pimped-out Remington 870 Shotgun, and a Remington .30-06 that I use regularly. I have several other guns, including ones that would be classified as assault rifles, that I've inherited that I don't use regularly. I am teaching my children how to shoot our pump .22 and they will grow up to hunt like I did. We live in a rural area and go to an outdoor range once a month as a family outing. Hunting and shooting is a great legacy that I am happy to be able to pass down to them. What is myopic is not being able to see that the biggest threat to that legacy is the bloody obstinance shown by America's gun fetishists in the face of a changing world.5 points

ok, so to address the actual situation: it's a sad thing all around. when there is an increasingly rare situation when i sit in a church (catholic, usually, since i am one), i'm not thinking about my gun, because i do not have my gun. would christ want his people armed in his house of worship? this is the guy that preached peace and martyrdom. he laid down his life to make a point. so did his followers. i understand those of you who want to defend kith and kin no matter the situation. my point is where are we as a country where our churches need to have clandestine security teams of ccl holders? is this really the solution? i know this case will be used as support for ccls and "good guys with guns" but i would argue that this case in an outlier. this dude was amazing and did not miss. and i hate to play in hypotheticals, but what if he did miss? what if we have more good guys with guns, and a dozen pull out and shoot in a dozen different directions, all aiming at the shooter and two hit him? where do the ten other bullets go? this is my main concern with the "good guys with guns" argument against some kind of meaningful gun control. please note i did not say "the government is coming for your precious guns and ammo." but this is a nearly daily occurrence, and the only answer i seem to here is more guns. that does not seem to be working, despite this cool customer who did drop a shooter.5 points

Houston voters and Mayor Bob deserve an equal share of the blame. It's been an object lesson in the "Be Careful What You Ask For" department. Why did we run Bud out of town again? And what did we bend over and give to the Warden? Oh, the same exact thing -- an NFL stadium. And our new owner is even more incompetent than the first one? Cool. And now our team is fake, boring, and also sucks? Awesome. Let's start out of the gate by hiring a bunch of Aggies too.5 points

I grew up in Houston. Had a 5th birthday party where my cake was an Oilers helmet and I proudly wore my Oilers jersey and belt buckle. I still have a signed picture of Earl from his Oiler days up in my office. I lived and died with every playoff game the Oilers lost. Anyone who thinks the "Texans" is an appropriate name for a Houston team has never set foot in the state of Texas. That place is more like Lowsyanna than Texas. Oilers, Astros, Rockets... all perfect names for that city. Texans is trying too hard to be like the Cowboys. They should have named the clash between the Titans and Texans the "Not Oilers Bowl" Fuck Bud Adams.5 points

I was 5 in June of ‘86 when we had to move to New Jersey From Dallas for Dad’s job. Mom’s dad had been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer that spring. We had flown back for thanksgiving that year. I remember I had brought “a gift” for him in my suitcase that my parents had no idea about. It was a brown paper lunch sack full of oak, gum, maple, ash and other tree leaves of all different colors from the fall. I said, “Papaw, I never saw these colors here so I brought them to you.” You’d thought I brought him a bucket of gold bricks by the look on his face. We had plane tickets to fly back on the 26th of Dec for Christmas, as it was horrifically expensive to fly on the holidays during that time. Got a call on Christmas Eve morning that we needed to fly home right then and there. Now. somehow, dad got the money together and we got a flight midday on Christmas Day from PHL to DFW. My uncle picked us up from the airport and they took me, just turned 6, and my 3 yr old sister to Papaw and Mamaw’s house where older second cousins were baby sitting us. Mom and Dad rushes to the hospital and got there about 8:30 or so. Dad went in to see him, and he asked what he bought us for Christmas. He walked out and his only daughter, my mom, went in to see him. He asked her the same. She said, “dad, we spent what we could to get here to see you, we got them some things but seeing you was what matters most.” He called my grand mom in there, and told her to get us a few extra things. Then he told my mom, “I was hanging on for you to get here, I love you”. And he passed. Love can drive the human body to do crazy things. They didn’t think he’d make it a week after thanksgiving, and they had no reason to believe he’d be alive 2 days after they’d called in a preacher to pray over him in the 24th. But seeing his daughter one more time drove him home. I love this time of year even though one of my first real memories of the holiday is one of great sadness, but it’s one of reflection as well. That sadness has been reciprocated many times over by joyous memories, but it also prepared me for three uncles I’ve lost within 10 days of either side of Christmas. It’s these times I find even greater strength in my faith5 points
