  1. I voted for Dubya once. I came to view that as a mistake but he was a valid President who tried to steward the country as best he could, albeit disastrously. Trump is not a President or statesman at all. He’s not a leader that independent people would willfully follow. He’s 1 part entitled rich kid, 2 parts Christian Bale’s character from American Psycho and 3 parts Cletus’ inflamed sense of societal rejection. That’s it. His only skills are a lust for conflict, a self-confidence that is as unshakable as it is unwarranted, a savvy understanding of base human nature, a knack for media manipulation and a complete void of conscience that allows him to operate unconstrained by ethics or morality. Whatever dubious success he has had is because of those qualities. He’s never won anything, only rigged it so he couldn’t lose. Never led anyone, only coerced them to do what he wants. Never made anything great, just played with it for a bit, fucked it up, then lost interest and moved on when it threatened his narcissists self-image.

  4. I don’t think Coleman is a bad pick at all. I’m amazed how some of you are able to keep up the blind rage day after day. I don’t necessarily like the way all of this has gone down, but I can still see straight. I’m pretty sure we’re a long way from Charlie Strong kicking us in the balls day after day for three years, even if we aren’t where we all want the program to be.

  5. You need some midol. You are constantly pissed about everything. Opinionated and think you are the only one that matters. I don’t think I have ever seen you coaching a game. I don’t think I have ever seen you giving a post game press conference where people actually want to hear what you say. You are an interest chat board narcissist who thinks your opinion is all that matters. I don’t care. I don’t give a flying fuck what you think. You always bitch and complain about everything and think everyone is stupid. Maybe try looking in the Mirror and getting rid of that block on your shoulder. It must be a sad existence to be in the vicinity of you. Since you are the all-fucking knowing.....who should we have hired 3 years ago as Head Coach? Who should we have hired at DC and OC? I would love to see your “Idea” of what you think would work because I seriously don’t think you know. You would win the lottery and then bitch about having to pay the taxes.

  7. Something like that happened to me once. I was in a bar and said to the bartender, "You wanna hear an Aggie joke?" and he said, "Son, you see that guy at the end of the bar? The biker with the eyepatch? He's an Aggie. You see that huge bouncer at the door? He's an Aggie. And me, I'm six-foot-three, three-hundred-pounds of Aggie pride. You still wanna tell us an Aggie joke?" And I'm like, "oh, hell, no, I'd have to explain it three times."

  10. If Larry Scott is happy to be rid of Mike Leach, it is just one more pebble in the mountain of evidence that Larry Scott is one of the dumbest motherfuckers alive. The PAC-12 has ZERO excuse for failing at all, let alone failing as badly as it is doing. Larry Scott is not the entire problem (the member schools are doing a pretty good job of fucking things up on their own, with the exceptions of the Northwest schools, which have been shouldering more than their fair share of the burden), but Scott is definitely exhibit 'A' in the stupidity of that conference. Mystifying that people that smart (I'm looking at you, California PAC schools) could do so many things that are so stupid.

  13. Hey all you motherfuckers that are going bananas over the position coaching search timelines - you guys know that the AFCA convention is in 2 days, right? I know that ESD has seemed to change things a bit in terms of public timetable but the reality for coaches is that guys searching for jobs and coaches hiring the convention is where shit gets done. I understand that everyone wants Herman to pick from a rolodex of guys at each spot and hour before he fired each of the previous coaches, but to be honest - the position coaches should be being picked by Yurcich and Ash and approved/vetoed by Herman. The convention has always been the place that shit gets done and before you even stammer about Arkansas' staff being full or whatever - take a look at their class vs. our current class and realize that there's a huge need for Pittman to get a staff in place and get them on the road. The huge need at Texas is to find guys that can develop the talent in house and that can work together to not only create more effective gameplans but communicate bidirectionally when they see things happening during the game that can give a competitive edge. IDGAF where they were they coached or who they are if they can stand up for themselves and say "fuck that shit". Too many of the guys on staff the past 2 years knew the problems and wouldn't tell Orlando "fuck that shit". I know there's a great gnashing of teeth and taste of bile from the 2019 season is still fresh. Trust me, I fully fucking understand. That season was fucking bullshit but to this point Herman has done most of what everyone on surly has wished for (outside of me with that shitfuck Drayton, but there is hope - however dangerous that is). Meh is gone. Beck is gone. Orlando is gone. Meekins is moved to non-coaching role where he can still provide some recruiting help. Warehime is gone. There were a multitude of posts saying that Herman would never make those changes. He did and so now the focus is on the "comfort hire" or lack of expediency with position coach hires. Fuck both of those ideas. I don't know if any of the hires will work but I can tell you that the Ohio State team that featured Herman and Ash as OC and DC certainly looked well coached and schemed. I also know that if Orlando would've just played motherfucking base defense for the entire season with nary a single blitz - the Longhorns probably win 9. I fully expect the 2020 team to be markedly better simply by playing a much simpler brand of defense. That alone will change the scope of the W/L total, imo. Not pumping sunshine just Occam's Razor. Recruiting related because recruiting is about relationships and hiring position coaches last week or in two weeks changes next to nothing in the scope of closing out the 2020 class - which is largely complete. The pieces in play are being recruited by Herman, the coordinators and the position coaches still on staff that have relationships with them.

  14. oh hey, there it is, as predicted: the "you're not a coach" spiel... Look, see, I can give you hard time about this. If anything I've got more right to do so than CTJ, because unlike him, I've actually spent years embracing this philosophy. What I'm trying to say here is: I was like you, once. I once thought as you did. But then, I actually read some coaching guides, started watching film... just to be a more informed fan, mind you. Then a neighbor shared with me his playbook from when he played under Sonny Lubick. And do you know what I realized? Most coaches really aren't that smart, this sport really isn't that hard to understand, and you don't have to have ever played or coached to understand it. Hell, Leach revolutionized the sport; he never played. In short, reject these idiotic ways as I have, and embrace the true power of the Dark Side.

  15. Been on Surly since it was Shaggy, but never found my way to this forum until last week. Figured I’d share my set up. I’ve been playing for around 12 years. Started with the pretty rough Epiphone LP then got the Taylor ~7 years ago. Just got the Strat in August ‘19. Can’t believe I was playing the LP for the past decade. Upgrading to the strat has made me a significantly better player. It’s a Mexistrat but I’m planning on upgrading to a vintage 80’s American-made soon. Also got the Boss Katana MKII after playing on the digital Marshall for the past decade. Loving the Katana and Mexistrat, but this is my budget setup for now. Gonna upgrade to a Fender Deluxe Reverb (or something similar) soon after I replace my strat. Looking forward to keeping up with y’all! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  16. First, I don’t think is possible for cb play to nosedive any further, from coaching to previous scheme I’m honestly not sure it could be at a lower starting point. So there’s that. My problem isn’t Valai as a person or coach, although I certainly have a metric fuckton of doubt on that front. The much larger issue is what his hire represents and what I think it means. To me it means Herman can’t or won’t identify candidates at the top of their profession for whatever reason (ego, insecurity, myopia, ineptitude, all of the above etc.) and go after them. That’s a big fucking problem. If no one worth their salt will work with him, that’s a big fucking problem. If he can’t sit above Ash, who we all know literally can’t assemble a staff to save or keep a job, and tell him to shoot higher, well that’s a big problem. Herman has basically created a scenario where he needs to catch young lightning in a bottle with Valai, and then hit that bottle out of the park without breaking it for this to be successful. Outside of the fact that I’m wildly skeptical this hire makes us a better staff and wins more games, it’s yet another indicator that Herman isn’t fit for this job, and we have another crapshoot of a hire in the near future. But I’m hoping the rope size thread gets threaded through the minuscule needle and he’s hired the next elite cb coach and recruiter. But I’m not holding my breath. I would forcibly hold CTJ’s breath, however.

  17. I just want to make it clear to everyone, and let there be no mistake, that I am still a piece of shit. In fact I consider myself the pieciest of pieces of shit. Myself and shit have a great relationship. Why just the other day shit was regaling on my pieceness to his larger massive shit existence. And I will gladly stand up next to shit and defend him still today.

  22. In certain contexts, one could make the case that this process and resultant staff are nothing to freak out over. One such context might be if this were Herman's first staff and one has to give a new guy some freedom to bring in who he wants and feels comfortable with. I think that's a poor argument, and I've heard it many times, it's generally bullshit, but I can sorta see it. Another might be if we are resource constrained. We are not, so that doesn't fly. Finally, if our HC had a proven track record of finding diamonds in the rough or assembling top staffs that did not appear to be top staffs at first blush, then we should be cutting him some slack. But Herman has not earned the benefit of the doubt. To the contrary, he has generally shown himself to be terrible in evaluating subordinate coaches and in managing their performance. This is his last chance - the hail mary. That's the context we are operating in now. So all this bullshit about "I don't think these hires are really that bad" have to be evaluated in that context. And in that context, that's an astoundingly retarded take. This should be an all-out, almost desperate, leaving-no-stone-unturned talent search. It's Tom's last stand - he better win and win now or he's out as early as next year. And what do we get? Complacency and cronyism, which have sadly become hallmarks on the Herman era. Oh well, as some one said upthread, the good news is it seems Herman is doing almost everything in his power to fuck up his last chance quickly so we can move on to the new guy.

  23. This is fucking absurd. I was a peon at a tech start-up in my early/mid-20’s. We were blowing up and growing so fast that it was hard to keep up. I show up one day and one of the higher ranking guys tells me “hey, uh, yeah, that guy over at that desk? yeah, we just hired him. he works for you now. “ and that’s how I became a manager. No training. No say in who reported to me. Just “here you go”. That guy they had reporting to me? SydneyCarton, for fucks sake. There’s no way they interviewed him. I think he was delivering something to the front desk, asked what was going on there, said he’d be interested in getting a job there and the receptionist hired him on the spot and sent him in to report in a VP’s office. Herman’s conducting a less sophisticated process than that.

  24. Guys are turning down jobs here, it’s the only logical explanation. A good portion of this board thinks Herman is a dead man walking, it’s not far fetched to think other coaches feel the same way.

  32. Jesus this thread. The fact that some of y’all believe the trash published by The Sun and The Daily Mail is hilarious. They’re the equivalent of The National Enquirer and TMZ. And as to Harry’s parentage, Harry was born in 1984. Diana didn’t meet James Hewitt until 1986. And if y’all don’t think that after the disaster that was the marriage of Charles and Diana and the rumors about Hewitt and Diana surfaced that QE2 and Charles didn’t do a DNA test then you’re naive. They had Diana checked by a physician to confirm her virginity FFS. And y’all are blind if you cannot see how much Harry looks like Prince Phillip and Charles.

  34. Current recruiting news dashboard: Herb Hand has followed every decent GT o-lineman. More info to come. Drayton offered a couple of RBs but now he's leaving and they're not coming (they probably weren't coming anyway). Collins is probably coming, and Princely still seems interested. Everything else is on hold pending new coaching hires.

  36. So you have a problem with the adult children of politicians that trade on their parents influence and power to personally enrich themselves, yes? I’m all for that. Let’s start with Don Junior, Eric, Ivanka, and Jared since their parent/parent-in-law is the actual current president. I’m sure your position will remain consistent on this issue.

  39. This is the University of Texas and we do not play those games. The only thing I want my coaches to have in their bag is a top notch 4 year education and the respect of their teammates and fans. That is more than enough payment for any young man. And if a player wants more well then he can just go somewhere else while we win Alamo bowl after Alamo bowl with pride.

  41. Because what we want is success on the football field. We don't want Herman fired because we don't like him. We want him fired because he can't hire, or lead, or apparently coach. How is this so difficult to understand? Firing Herman is merely our guess as to the best means to the end of improving Texas Football. If Herman happens to fix his shit by hiring people smarter and better than he is to run the show (Narrator: He won't.), then by all means, keep him around and pay him a billion. It's nothing personal towards Herman. It's that he has yet to demonstrate the capacity to coach at the level we need.
