It’s also absurd for 18-20 year olds to be bitching about massive organizations not making changes fast enough for their liking while the changes are being worked on, and it’s fair to be annoyed at said 18-20 years for bitching about it20 points

I’m an old white guy and I’m not telling anyone how to act or think. I sure as hell won’t let them tell me how to act or think either. That’s not racism, that’s just freedom. Hopefully there is a compromise and The Eyes stay.20 points

I’ve paid attention. I just want to be given the same opportunity to have my thoughts and actions and not be called racist because I have a different opinion. Try not being an jerk next time.16 points

It would horrible if people made broad assumptions about your beliefs based on whether you kneeled.15 points

I was there for a while too, but its a wrong thought. America is ours. It isn't Trump's. The flag is our flag, not Trump's. We need to take it back. I just watched my neighborhood in NYC have a patriotic night. More fireworks than Macy's ever displayed. Everyone of all types in the streets celebrating. About 70% non white. 99% of them anti-Trump. This is America. And I am a white as fuck southern mannerism guy who was wearing a USA shirt and Astros hat. Every part of my family tree disappears in America in the 1600s. Can't track a single line to the old country. But i'm more English by DNA than anyone in England including the Queen. 97% English, 3% Unknown Northern European. I'm that white. My daughter is that 50% "white," and also 50% Indian. But she is 100% American. But to Trumpists, she isn't even American. But really, I speak 2 languages fluently and 3 others conversationally. My daughter just speaks English in spite of my wife and I trying to make her know my wife's native language. She is even assholish about not needing to know it because she doesn't need it in NYC. What's more American than that?15 points

Republicans are giving their voters exactly what they want: fairy tales and end times fantasy. Their voters don’t care about being better off in reality. They just want powerful people to cast them as heroes in an epic myth of Good vs. Evil.14 points

We live in a world where people don't think for themselves and have their heads firmly shoved up their own asses. And that is never more apparent than every time you post some nonsense like this. Btw I guess this doesn't apply to you because on another thread I saw you say that the Mississippi State players should just get over a joking tweet Mike Leach sent out about killing his wife. Your'e a hypocrite. You just pick and choose which people to shit on based on the bullshit narrative you have in your head.13 points

Dude. My teenage daughter got covid a few weeks ago after one of these parties. Literally she picked it up at a lake party in Austin- no not the LT pongparty. But something similar. Was sick for a week. It sucked and does suck really really bad for everyone in the family. A few really really bad. My wife has asked me to hold off on posting details here for privacy reasons but i can assure you this this shit is real.12 points

Having a discussion or debate with the current version of a Republican is like playing tennis with a terrible but super competitive beginner who won't acknowledge the lines on the court. The frustration is limitless until you realize that you're trying to argue with someone who doesn't believe rules of argument exist because they've been dumbed down by a new populist religion that at its core scorns traditional enlightenment values of reason, the scientific method, and progress. I'm sure we all have anecdotal stories to tell but places like nextdoor and facebook are ripe with examples of this idiocy in action. Most of these Trumpkin jackasses are already terrible at arguing on the internet, but it's compounded because they just won't engage facts and reasoned logic. When confronted with it, they change the subject to some stupid Qanon type of conspiracy vision and will always assert that xyz fact is Fake News. It's astonishing to me. How the fuck can you hate the values that made America great in the first place?11 points

Everybody should watch this clip and take note of the cowardice, the hypocrisy, the soullessness. Then ask yourself how is it that a country of 320M+ people continues to send filth like this to Congress. She is one of 100 in the Senate with a guaranteed job for six years. Why the fuck do we continue to settle for this as a country??? It's truly embarrassing some of the people we elect to public office in this country.11 points

We are going to assume you hate America and small business. Then we’re going to take away your guns and force all females in your immediate family to get abortions.11 points

Some thoughts on the Eyes of Texas: Sinclair wrote a poem before he wrote a song. These lines from the poem: The eyes of Texas are upon you. They’re with you all the way. Were changed to these lines for the song: The eyes of Texas are upon you. You cannot get away. The poem ends with the lines: Vandyke brown, vermillion, sepia, Prussian blue, Ivory black and crimson lac, and eyes of every hue. UT has the original poem on a scrap of paper, complete with hand written edits. Sinclair thought enough of it to keep it and somehow it ended up in the archives. I think, if we jettison the song, it is unlikely that we will ever have something like it that unifies the community. I travelled around the SWC in the 1980s and heard a lot of forgettable alma maters. Before the game, we would play the Eyes of Texas and you could see how many Texas fans were at the game by looking for the horns up. And then, the home announcer would say "please turn to page 46 in your program or direct your view to the scoreboard for the words, and sing along with the band as they play our alma mater". And we would laugh at a school where the alumni did not know the alma mater and they had to put words up on the scoreboard. The home band would play some lame tune and the game would begin. "Oh we love our school it is the best we will always be true to thee". That will likely be us. The players, the larger Black community, and everyone else who was offended have the power to find forgiveness, if they want to, and advocate to change the lyrics to be more inclusive. If they find value in what we have, they have the power to say that what happened was wrong and everyone else has the power to say we are sorry for what happened. We all have the power to be more inclusive every day. But maybe the offense is too much and the song can't be saved. If so, I understand. I hope we can find an inclusive middle ground. Maybe it is there and maybe it is not.10 points

How about we don’t play the anthem at the beginning of events? Unlike what some believe, the point of playing it is to bring everyone together before two team/two sides play against each other on the field/ballpark. If the anthem, and reactions to it, are separating us, them stop the anthem playing. my solution above doesn’t stop the underlying problems but it helps to not create a hostile environment that I believe it will. for the OP, any game worth attending in person, doesn’t have room for spectators to kneel.10 points

Nothing says 'Murica quite like banging your wife in an RV parked in a Walmart parking lot on the 4th of July when your kid walks in.9 points

I should also add, that the dismissal of everything except an alarming death rate seems to have some people thinking all is well. The longer we operate at or above capacity, the more people will die do to lack of care because of those triage decisions. They may not add up to a death spike that gets people attentions, but its still a death that didn't need to happen. We dont even seem to be reactive until shit is bad. "Cases aren't rising here so I think we are ok" "Cases are rising, but hospitalization rates aren't, so I think we are ok" "Hospitalizations are up, but deaths aren't spiking, so I think we are ok" So our next step seems to be is "deaths are rising, but we are still doing better than NY, so I think we are ok?"9 points

A few years back, there was some Beatles tribute at the Kennedy Center. Elvis Costello wanted to do "Penny Lane" but he needed a piccolo trumpet player. he checked with the union halls and came up empty. Then, he checked "The President's Own".9 points

It’s not a racist song and the reasons claimed are specious at best. Nothing proving it was sung in black face. We are not going to jump because a bunch of spoiled athletes that have never won shit are complaining. People on my side far outnumber yours. If the school gets rid of it there will be people like me singing it regardless. Then you will have a situation where a small overly sensitive group of students manipulated by a middling ethnic studies professor that took away something unifying that we all loved for over 100 years. CDC is taking his time because he knows this is a time bomb. OU and aggy are laughing at us contorting ourselves over this shit. They couldn’t have dreamed to come up something this good to derail our entire program.8 points

The America I know helps humanity when in need. Is generous in spirit. And appreciates all voices. Idealist. Aspirational. We have four years of a "Ford-like" Presidency ahead of us, and then in 2024 a fresher President. This election is about where we go, not where we have been. Happy Independence Weekend.8 points

This dumbfuck exhausted our testing capacity by telling 10s of thousands of protests to go get testing no matter whether they were symptomatic or not, then had to revise guidance to "please only get tested if you are showing symptoms of COVID". Positivity of course spikes, so now he wants to shut down for 35 days? Do I have that fairly right?7 points

I gave an address to a bunch of psychologists in South Africa in 2017, soon after Trump started. It was an uncomfortable time to be traveling with an American passport. The first thing I said when I took the podium was, "Listen. I didn't vote for him." Immediately got a big laugh and a standing ovation. The rest of my talk was downhill from there, but it didn't matter.7 points
