  1. Those last two posts back to back are kind of funny.

  2. Apparently we have to just accept mass shootings in this country because a certain group of people blame society for mishandling firearms. Guns are magical, innocent, and inspirational objects. And we've gotten in the way. Maybe we should just ban people and let guns live on Earth.

  7. Speaking of traipsing through version of reading, the poster who first said "damn" when it was released that the shooter was not white did not do so out of political or moral outrage. Rather, @Pasken was concerned that, as a another non-white person, he/she would face increased discrimination, as has happened in past terror incidents. I don't know if it's true, but I also know that I don't know because as a white person, I've never once felt extra scrutiny because of something a different white person has done. Frankly, I can't even imagine a scenario where that occurs. You have 10+ posts now being outraged that people want to blame white people, when in actuality it's non-white people not wanting to face increased targeting for harassment.

  8. The Constitution allows for people to keep and bear arms and that’s fine. It says nothing about regulating their sale and trade. There needs to be a national registry and a complete ban on nonregulated sales of firearms and ammunition. There needs to be a waiting period, real background checks, and red flag laws. Hell, there needs to be evidence that you passed a standardized, subsidized psychological evaluation and gun safety course. And there need to be stiff civil and and criminal penalties for trading in weapons outside the system. Strict civil and criminal liabilities if your gun is used in a crime and it was not sold legally or reported stolen. Strict criminal and civil penalties for possessing an unregistered weapon or one without a serial number. Lets start with that and then you can have all the registered AR-15s you want.

  13. The problem is the people caring about "getting embarrassed." Nobody gives a shit 3 months later. Target your dream guys then move in order down the list. It's 2 months later and nobody gives a single solitary shit about the Urban Meyer situation. We took our shot, he said no, we have a different coach.

  14. We need both, but the first one would make a hell of a lot more difference than the second one. And progressives who pretend that we have have a healthcare crisis but not a mental health crisis when the issue of guns comes up are a little like environmentalists who pretend that we have an environmental crisis but not a sprawl problem when the issue of apartments in their neighborhood comes up.

  16. Oh, let's be clear. I think we are willing to do almost anything to avoid acknowledging the depth of our mental health crisis in this country, including substituting gun control for compassion. It's a bit like dignifying homeless with the right to sleep under bridges as a substitute for supportive care and community.

  20. While it's not a "great disarming", we had the Assault Weapons Ban in 1994. This was before mass shootings were truly a thing - 5 years before Columbine. 18 years before Sandy Hook. 24 years before the Parkland shooting. States/politicians, and the NRA attacked the AWB constantly, but never could get the courts to rule in their favor. The AWB only went away in 2004 because of sunset provisions. If Republican politicians truly gave a shit about legal gun owners, they'd be working to cut down on mass shootings through things like red flag laws, because one of these days, there's going to be a mass shooting that will give us an AWB II, which will negatively affect all legal gun owners. And an AWB II will have 10 years of experience from the first AWB to make it even tighter and close a lot of loopholes, even more resistant to being overturned in the courts, since those writing it will have seen how the original AWB was attacked in the courts. The fact that Republican politicians don't want to keep guns out of the hands of crazies speaks volumes. We all saw Republicans after Sandy Hook and Parkland and other such events immediately rush out to defend the NRA, guns, etc., without doing anything, like red flag laws, to prevent another mass shooting. It's like how Republican politicians are sooo against abortion, but if you bring up sex education, birth control, etc. in schools, they lose their shit and try to ban such talk or distribution of birth control. Why is that? If you're pro-life, wouldn't you want to reduce the amount of abortions by reducing the amount of pregnancies? If you're pro-NRA/2A/guns, wouldn't you want to reduce the amount of mass shootings, which would reduce the pressure for blanket bans or restrictions that affect all legal gun owners?

  23. I think there were actual rape kits that just never got processed and that's why he is in jail. I don't think it was just circumstantial he said she said. I think rape was proven and the method he got them to "consent" was basically understood to be roofies. I'm 100% sold on the fact that DW is a fucking weird ass massage pervert. I'm also 100% sold on the fact that there is no way that in the private masseuse community/world and especially in the instagram "celeb hot chick massage lady" world that this isn't basically expected. I'm not saying all massage therapists are prostitutes, but there is a strong correlation between sexual activity and massages when not done through a corporate entity or when cash is the main means of compensation.

  24. You think the Texans are weighing three options: 1) Don’t trade DW, he sits out but is still on team 2) Trade DW, probably don’t get proper value but get a bunch of good draft picks 3) Dig up/create a complex criminal scandal with 20 victims so that they accomplish neither #1 or #2, cancel DWs contract. All to save face and shift blame? I get that the Texans are now a bottom 5 franchise in terms of management, but that’s insanity talking.

  26. The scheme as you laid out is both insanely illegal and ludicrously complex. At this point, it involves cajoling dozens of women into filing false pleadings. And, of course, that means that you entering into a criminal scheme to embezzle/defame/blackmail someone with dozens of people who you already know are willing to engage in a criminal scheme. At some point the criminal mastermind here has to think, "wait, what if one of these women blackmails ME now that she's wise to our plan. What happens when she realizes she can get far more out of the owners of the Texans than she can in a lawsuit against a Texans player?" And that's just the women witnesses. The architects of the scheme are so far out of lawsuit territory, it's absurd. They are into lose your law license, lose your NFL franchise, go directly to prison and don't pass go if the scheme gets found out. And it will get found out, because insanely complex criminal schemes involving dozens of people don't stay under wraps outside of Ocean's 11. The schemes by definition rely on the integrity and competence of people who by definition are lacking integrity and are usually really, really stupid. Now, if this were a single woman member of the Texans' training staff making an allegation and team management low-key lining up behind her? OK, maybe there is something odd. Do I believe it's possible that not all of the women making filings are telling the whole truth? Sure. Do I think it's plausible that dozens of people at this point are in at different levels of a grand conspiracy to defraud a football player who wants a trade? I'd say its far more within the realm of possibility that DW4 has a pretty freaky kink he didn't control, no? He's only been in the league for three years, right? Hardly a Cosby-esque career in the public spotlight. If the argument is that the Texans have long known about this and have chosen only now to make a stink--- OK, well, now I think DW4 is a predator AND the Texans have been covering up for a predator. So no real change in my opinion on the dude acting like a creep. As far as "the phone musta been hacked", that's usually the part where I tune out of a movie or TV show that I knew going into is fiction. It's a lazy plot point for a story we all know is fake.

  30. “Love locks” that people leave on bridges and towers and shit. Your relationship and your partner and you are not special or eternal. All you have done is make someplace that looked fine look worse thanks to your stupid and vapid self absorption. Some municipal worker is going to come with bolt cutters and throw your shitty lock into a can with all the others. They’ll be sold for scrap, melted down, and turned into something else. Actually an apt metaphor for you and your relationship.

  32. “The psychological burdens of being detained pending trial are very real for Mr. Young. Since he has no previous experience with the criminal justice system, being detained is taking an extremely high toll on his mental well-being,” the motion stated. “Prior to being detained, Mr. Young was a mentally strong and stable person with no history of mental disorders. His current emotional and psychological state is owing entirely to the fact that he has been detained and is unable to rely upon his normal social support systems. Because he is such a strong family man, locking him up away from his wife and children with the prospect of an extremely long period of time before trial is even scheduled is causing potentially irreparable psychological and emotional damage to Mr. Young.”

  33. Oh for fuck's sake. It's MIL, but I'm not starting a new thread. Long story short. My MIL is a drama queen that can't handle a fucking thing on her own. Since I've known her she's left my wife's father for an Elvis impersonator, then left him for some guy that's actually a bigger loser. She has no sense of humor and talks to my wife like she's still 3 years old. So we're headed to the Hill Country a couple of days ago for Spring Break. Wife is driving 'cause I'm tired. We get the following text... MIL: Hi sweetie. Are you ok? I'm watching TWC and I see that there are horrible storms in your area. (They had passed through several hours earlier which, if you're really paying attention, you'd know. But, like I said, anything for drama.) I'm worried about y'all. I want you to be safe. Love you honey. Be safe. Let me know if the storms hurt you. You're my little angel. Wish I could keep you safe from the storms. (etc...) So I reply: We're ok. Trying to get the 8 year-old out of the tree where the winds blew him. We lost 1 out of 2 cats and at least 3 tshirts. Good news is that, when we opened the door, the world went from black and white to color. MIL: OMG. Is everyone ok? I'll come down there and help if need be. I'm so worried. My wife tells me to call her, so I do. As she freaks out, my wife is all, "He's giving you the plot of the Wizard of Oz. We're fine." Of course the MIL starts crying and says my text wasn't funny, then sends a book-long text to my SIL about how big of an asshole I am. F's sake. Maybe I'm callous or maybe I'm the product of being a latch-key kid, but I do not understand this woman.
