I live in a world where 1) Derka 2) can observe that Dave Portnoy speaking as to the economy is important, and 3) both Derka and Dave are right. Stop this planet, I'd like to get off.21 points

ALVORD, Texas - Crews are working to clean up a truckload of dimes that spilled onto U.S. Highway 287 in Wise County. What we know: The Alvord Fire Department confirmed the dimes spilled from an 18-wheeler that overturned on Hwy. 287 near Alvord High School early Tuesday morning. The highway has been shut down since then so that crews can recover all the loose change. Images from SKY 4 showed some workers scooping up piles of dirt and coins with a shovel. Other workers used a vacuum cleaner to suck up the coins. One person appeared to be picking up dimes by hand. What we don't know: Itβs not yet clear why the 18-wheeler was carrying so many loose dimes. The cause of the crash is still unknown. Thereβs no timeline for when the highway will reopen. The Source: The information in this story comes from the Alvord Fire Department and SKY 4 video.20 points

You know, I did things the right way. People said I should save for my son's education, so I saved for my son's education. Started a 529 because people said it was the right way. I didn't choose anything too risky, just Index Funds because people said it was the right way. I put a little (very little) money in each month and put some of his birthday and Christmas money every year. My son graduated high school last year with $20K in that 529. I know that's nothing to some of ya'll, but to me, considering that I started college with Jack Shit, being able to give my son that $20K is something I take great pride in. And now, after 20 years of doing the right thing, when my son actually needs that money to pay for school, I'm worried Trump's fucking around and I'm going to be the one finding out. Fuck every one of you that voted for him. Fuck you for not knowing better. Fuck you for not caring.19 points

My shop uses a vendor that is a Vietnamese immigrant that has been in the US for a number of years. He likes to come in and drop off invoices while wearing his dumbass maga hat, trump T-shirts, and anything trumpanzee related. I mostly ignore what heβs wearing and take his invoices and send him on his way as the abundance of maga gear makes him really annoying. He loves to talk politics but I need my guys working and donβt want them engaging him. Well the magat went back to the big rice pond for a quick visit and has not returned in 2 months. Found out from his family that he had been detained somewhere out West and had whatever his immigration status was revoked. Sucks to be him. His family is looking for anyone who knows him to write a letter of recommendation to have him released and allowed to remain in the US. Didnβt think this was going to happen to him nor did his family who are now taking steps to be invisible. Yes, these people are that dumb. Also will write that letter sooner than later just because I donβt wish that on anyone. A good 70/30 chance he wonβt learn from this experience either.16 points

I have despised Bowels ever since he voted for Reggie Bush over VY for the Heisman, in some misguided attempt to prove that we was smarter than everyone else and not a homer. Retire already.13 points

I know this is TLDR, but I just need to vent a little. My mom is 95 and still lives alone. Two years ago, she fell and hit her head, and I found her unresponsive in bed the next morning. She had bleeding on her brain and had to have a hole drilled in her head to drain fluid. She has fully recovered physically, but her mental faculties have taken a pretty severe decline. It's not like dementia; she recognizes everyone, and her long-term memory is still good, but her short-term memory is just about completely gone. I end up having virtually the same conversation with her every day. She lives in the same townhouse that she and my dad lived in for 40 years, so she is really comfortable there and can function reasonably well there. She has just about completely lost the ability to operate any technology. I had to have her oven replaced, and she can't operate it at all. She can still operate her microwave and her coffee pot, but if either one dies, and I can't replace it with the exact same one, she will probably lose that ability. I have a caretaker who comes five mornings a week and makes sure she gets up, gets dressed, and has breakfast. She has a housekeeper who comes and cleans and does laundry. I go over every day in the afternoon and sit with her for a while, make dinner, and make sure that everything is turned off before I leave. I do all of her shopping, take her to all of her doctor and dental appointments, make sure that all of her prescriptions are filled, and that she takes her medicine every day. If something at her house needs fixing, I'll take care of that. I used to take her to church on Sunday, but thankfully, she now prefers just to watch it on tv. Of course, she can't operate her tv anymore, so I have to be there every Sunday morning for that. I have three siblings, but none of them live very close (Austin, Baytown, and Bellville). Thankfully my two sisters do come in every Friday so that I get a day off. One of my sisters does handle all of her finances, so at least I don't have to worry about that. I don't really worry too much about her being alone because all she does it sit in her chair and read her western novels. I do have to keep her well supplied with those, although with her memory problems she can read them over and over again. My two sisters have been talking about moving her to an assisted living facility, but I know that if that happens she will die within a few months. Her mother was just like that. She lived alone in her house in Wharton until she was 95, She got sick and my mom moved her to an assisted living facility near her in Houston, and she died within a few months. My mom does love my dog Sebastian, so he goes with me to her house on most days, but I have to be careful that he doesn't knock her over (he weighs 86 lbs). My mom lives close to Tanglewood dog park, so Sebastian and I usually stop there for a while and decompress a little. Taking care of my mother every day, and my Autistic and intellectually impaired daughter four days a week gets a little overwhelming at times. On Sundays, cook a big lunch after church, so I don't have to go back and cook dinner for her. Usually, on Sunday after my daughter's soccer practice, Sebastian and I will go to the ranch and spend the night. He loves to run all over it and chase the Longhorns, and I get a chance to just sit on the porch and chill. As long as I am back in Houston on Monday afternoon it usually works out fine. I am at the point now that I am seriously considering selling my house and moving in with my mom. She has two bedrooms upstairs that I could move into, and she never goes upstairs any way (thankfully). The only real down side to that is Sebastian. I think it would be a little difficult for him without any kind of a yard. My mom's townhouse only has an atrium that's about 10 feet by 20 feet, and that's not very much for a dog his size. Sebastian has been my rock through all of this. He can sense when I'm feeling down and he'll come over and nudge my hand until I start petting him to calm down. His favorite pastime is to lay next to me on the sofa, with his head in my lap, and sleep while I watch Longhorn baseball. Any way, that's my life. If you actually read any of this, I thank you. I feel better just typing it out.12 points

never forget: also, i wish i could find it, but there was another twitter interaction thatβs one of my favorites of all time. some republican politician went to twitter after seeing tom morello make a political statement, to tell him that he had always liked RATMβs music, but that he would no longer want to listen to it if musicians like him want to opine on politics (lololol yeah you sound like a huge RATM fan). βjust keep it about the musicβ and such. someoneβs outstanding comment: OK I GUESS IβLL DO WHAT YOU TELL ME lmao, never forgot that one.11 points

Currently on the train from Krakow to PrzemyΕl, where I'll switch to an overnight Ukrainian sleeper train at the border. FWIW y'all, i don't want to spam up this thread if you're not down, so LMK if i should start a thread in food and travel or something. Also, I have a couple days in Krakow on the way back. Heard it gets cold there, too. (BTW- Tinder vacation mode is set to Kyiv, Bumble is set to Krakow. I always do this when I have two stops on a trip. Last time it was Buenos/Lima π)11 points

Maybe they should have played us in football in Austin? Their shitty stadium didn't help them. And if they need to move, they can join the Pac 2. They'd at least finish 3rd, which is essentially a natty for those ass clowns.10 points

Yeah, not that difficult to imagine how the rest of that would've gone. Trump is an impossible interview because he doesn't live in reality, believes he can shape reality (and actually does for millions of people all around us), and has exactly zero decency, self-awareness or capacity for shame.10 points

Every time this discussion comes up it just makes me sad how many of our citizens can only think in sound bites and canβt look deeper into historical occurrences. Enslaved people weren't 3/5 of a person, they were not persons at all under the Constitution, they were chattel, personal property. The fact that they had no vote for said representatives means they should have been counted as zero. What it did was to give white people in southern slave states an additional 3/5 representation for each enslaved person in the state. The reality is that it provided a hell of an incentive to import more enslaved persons in the 20 years the slave trade was allowed to continue. Itβs called a βcompromiseβ because the union might not have formed if the South stuck to their guns and just stayed independent. The overriding discussion is that a union founded on such inequities is tainted from the outset. Thatβs the part the racist right hates so they twist it as a good thing, because the southern whites didnβt get a full count for each enslaved persons, but again, it should have been zero, the compromise gave the southern slave states way more representation in the House of Representatives than they deserved, and in fact prolonged slavery for decades leading to the civil war, which was primarily aboutβ¦wait for itβ¦slavery. https://indianacapitalchronicle.com/2025/04/28/a-great-move-or-revisionist-history-indianas-beckwith-sparks-three-fifths-compromise-debate/9 points
