  1. Howdy folks - Buckeye in Austin here, checking back in for the first time this season. Best of luck to y'all this weekend. I have zero feel for how this game is going to go - both sides with obviously extreme talent but inexperience at some very important positions. I think TX has a slight edge at QB given Arch's game experience last year, and a significant edge on the sideline since we will be breaking in two new fresh coordinators (even though Hartline will have a nice safety net given that Day has spent most of his career calling plays). Calling it a wash over the other positions (TX with an advantage at DL and LB, OSU at OL and WR, etc) I would expect TX to pull out a close win, and a blowout in either case seems extremely unlikely...but playing this monster in Game 1 just adds an unaccountable weirdness factor. My 6-year-old daughter fortunately loves me very much and wants to root for OSU to make me happy, but as the lone actual Austinite in the family she is torn. She'll be wearing a TX dress underneath her OSU hoodie for this one.

  2. Well, I'm a registered Democrat, which gives me the right to vote for who will be Democratic candidate for partisan elections. (Not sure if Texas operates that way.) But, beyond that, for the last 35 years, the Democratic Party has consistently approach challenges with the same mindset that I do, with very few exceptions. They may not write the policies the way I would write them, but it is generally coming from the angle: - it is important to protect the environment - free market capitalism is frequently a good way to develop an efficient economy, but there are notable exceptions like health care - voting participation should be encouraged - the government has a role in protecting human rights and promoting equality - upward mobility is good for society and the government has a role in promoting it, including through public education If the Democrats stop viewing things through that prism, I will stop calling myself a Democrat. In the meantime, there is no reason to be coy about who I am or what I believe. And sure, there are things I approach differently than the Dems generally do, but they aren't that high on my priority list.

  6. In the last 2 years, he's won at Bama, at Michigan, won against all 3 of our biggest historical rivals, is 9-0 on the road, won a conference title, and won 2 playoff games. What do you consider big games? Rivalry games? Playoff games? Ranked matchups? It can't only be if you lose, because if we lost to OU or Clemson or A&M last year, some people would be trying to include that in their "big game losses", so if you are going to do that, it has to count as a big game win.

  10. My family has been in Texas since it was part of Mexico. I have an ancestor who died at the Alamo, and one who signed the Texas Declaration of Independence. I used to love Texas, and being Texan, but now it's just an embarrassment. If my family situation allowed it, I would gladly leave and never return. Every day that I'm forced to stay here is a stain on my soul. Fuck the people that did this.

You'd think that after draft-dodging Trump's bullshit like calling John McCain and other vets losers for getting captured in combat and fucking up the VA would drive my old man away. But nope, he still thinks Trump is the answer our country needs. He's been a great father, and at 81 he's showing significant signs of dementia and I don't know how many more months or years I have with him. So I don't bust his balls about politics. But it's still really frustrating to see the father I love so much go all in on such a horrible human being.

  16. All fair enough but I'm going to judge a college kid a bit differently than a 60 something year old man like Clemens. A lot of the people on this board (not me, I'll have you know) were Republican YCT types back when they were in college. I'll allow a person some time to grow out of that idiocy. Also, Roger is a piece of shit for a whole host of reasons other than politics: narcissism like giving all his kids names that start with K, using PEDs then blaming his wife and doing the Lance Armstrong thing where he tries to destroy the lives of his accusers, a likely affair with a 15 year old when he was 28, hitting Mike Piazza in the head because Piazza used to kill him (8-19 in 22 plate appearances with 4 homers and 10 rbis) along with the bat throwing incident. Always denial, never apologies for any of his awful behavior. Fuck Roger Clemens.

  28. News flash! Republicans have given away all their principles for power as nothing about their platform or platitudes is rooted in reality or truth. Party of free trade, free speech, and lower taxes slaps tariffs on all goods, nationalizes the chip industry, and wants to take over national media. Party of individual freedom sends in masked police forces and national guard troops against its citizenry and lays waste to Habeas Corpus. Party of limited government gives executive branch almost limitless power. Party of fiscal responsibility adds trillions to the debt for tax cuts for billionaires. Party of national defense backs away from alliances and cozies up to tyrants and dictators. Party all about family values, children, and anti-pedophilia led by guy with solid ties to THE pedophile they all point to. Party run by a President who: 1.) Is a reality star β€˜Billionaire’ who didn’t actually get rich until be became president 2.) Promised to drain the swamp but installed swamp creatures and leveraged all his power to enrich himself 3.) Made inroads in minority groups while disparaging them, whitewashing history, and eliminating decades of civil rights progress. 4.) Is adored by the religious while he can’t recite a bible passage, cheated on his wives and has confirmed ties with pedophile (ok this is in their lane NM) 4.) Has one crowing achievement in Project Warp Speed but is a vaccine skeptic and is dismantling the HHS and the vaccine technology that led to his only successful program as president. 5.) Says we’re overrun by criminals when he is a felon, pardons convicted felons, appoints those felons, and then breaks the law everyday in his grifting and violations of the constitution/ people’s rights. We live in the upside down times and it’s only getting worse worse.

  29. Here is what Bill Connelly / SP+ predicted before the Bama game in 2023: Current line: Bama -7 | SP+ projection: Bama by 12.8 | FPI projection: Bama by 13.8 Source: https://www.espn.com/college-football/insider/story/_/id/38346795/college-football-week-2-texas-bama-texas-miami-bets-picks-more I like Connelly and I like SP+, but his model struggles early in the season. Same as FPI, same as literally everyone. There is not enough data to go on, especially for a week 1 game. I'm picking Texas and I think this game will look more like Michigan in 2024 and less like Bama in 2023. We have the QB advantage and we have the better defense. Those two factors alone decide 90% of college football games. Our secondary is going to make reading the field and making safe throw hard on the inexperienced (although clearly talented) Sayin, and he isn't going to have much time to do his job with our DL crashing down on him. OSU's best bet will be to lean on their run game, but that neutralizes their biggest asset in WR Jeremiah Smith. I don't know what to make of our OL at this point, which makes it hard to predict how well the offense will do as a whole. But I'm pretty sure we can run block even if our pass block is deficient due to injuries. We definitely have the better stable of RBs. We can lean on our run game if we need to, which is a cornerstone of Sark's offense anyway. Maybe I'm too much of a homer, but there it seems like everything lines up favorably for Texas. OSU is clearly an excellent team with a talented roster, but styles make fights and, at least at this point in the season, I think we are a terrible match up for what they want to do.
