Texas O-line talk

Coach pop a bitch

Recommended Posts

Whipped by Rice’s front (UT OL) during the first half didn’t allow Texas to establish the running or passing game. It’s like they were going through the motions and “practice” was tougher than what they’d expect from Rice. That’s how teams lose to lower “caliber” teams, but look great vs good teams!

OL needs a kick in the ass prior to next weekend! If it weren’t for the Defense, this game would be more close than we want, as if it isn’t already!

Hook’em!!!

Really awful performance by this unit today. You do not go anywhere as a team if this unit continues to play like today.

Yes it was, I don't know what the answer is but Rice was in our backfield from the start. I want to say 3 hurries, 1 tfl and a pressure on the first 2 drives?

Rice came to play and they showed a lot of psuedo pressure. Lots of mental tricks from their front that gave our guys fits early and often.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Neto get even more run next week. Hopefully Campbell is healthy and understands how to pass protect better by next week. They absolutely must protect Quinn better than they did for much of today's game.

Feel like everyone is going to borrow that Aranda game plan, until the prove they handle it

The mental mistakes by o-line have to get reduced.

Ewers needs to get faster with reads and get the fuckin' ball out quicker to help o-line.

SARK better adjust to Ewers strengths and protect Ewer's weaknesses.  Short passing offense including RBs to help Quinn. Run more 7man football shit!!!  Don't be afraid to have more 12 play offensive possessions -- SARK has to fuckin' evolve with his playcallin'

The deep throws will get better once Quinn starts hitting more underneath stuff.  Stay out of so many fuckin' 3rd and longs...

Vs bama last year the rb pass blocking was superb.  Dont think these rbs are half the pass blockers Bijan and RJ were.

Baxter has been mentioned as a decent blocker in pass pro... hated to see him get injured yesterday.

Sark and adjust in the same sentence? Wasting 1st down against Bama is going to get Quinn's head taken off. Then all those wanting Murphy may get it sooner than anticipated.

Texas is the only school on this list that returns all five starters from a year ago. However, it was a unit that finished just 73rd in the country last season in PFF grade (61.6), so improvements are needed.

There are bright spots, though, particularly at offensive tackle. Kelvin Banks Jr. is a top-10 tackle in the country and was stellar as a true freshman in 2022. His 3.5% pressure rate allowed on true pass sets ranked sixth among Power Five tackles. Christian Jones will once again start on the right side and finished third among Big 12 tackles last year with a 2.7% pressure rate allowed.

Jake Majors is entering his third season as the Longhorns’ starting center and was seventh among Power Five ones last year with an 81.9 pass-blocking grade. The weakness of this group is at guard, as both Hayden Conner and Cole Hutson earned sub-55.0 grades in 2022. Hutson was just a true freshman, to be fair. If he and Conner don’t take a leap, though, Texas could turn to DJ Campbell, a five-star recruit in the 2022 class who earned an 83.1 pass-blocking grade on limited snaps last season.

QE needs a clean pocket to run through progressions; as posted by someone else (take credit if you're reading) the 4th dimension unlocked for McCoy between 08 and 09 and he was accurate on the move and in a dirty pocket while reading his options.

QE is not there yet, or has not shown he is there yet, as he still lacks accuracy deep on throws that have to be placed, even when stationary with a clean pocket.

Sorry of the QE diversion, for me watching from home the game was won by the OL in the 3rd quarter when clearly there was a dramatic 100% improvement in the OL and QE was able to matriculate 3 TDs in a row.

QE also has to work on converting some off-script plays with WRs.  Evade rush and make some good throws.  This offense needs Quinn to sustain more drives.

Colorado and usc QBs are great at making plays to move the chains, when the original play breaks down.

I watched that Colorado game. I think the RB had over 100 yards of YAC alone. They didn’t hit a lot of balls down the field. Colorado shredded TCU underneath. The offense mostly stayed on schedule. Like to see Sark emphasize efficiency over explosive in the passing game, until Quinn and the OL grow up

Offensive Line

Interior OL play remains a work in progress and parts of this unit certainly didn’t exhibit the motor, cohesion and decisiveness expected. Here’s a compilation of Jaydon Blue runs. Watch No. 76 Hayden Conner (he plays both LG and some RG at the end when we bring in Neto Umeozulu).

How would you describe #76’s pad level on these run plays? Overall effort level? Is he delivering blows or receiving the defender on run blocks? How many times does he make initial contact and then either pull up or have the defender slide off immediately? How many blocks did he finish? How many plays end with him watching the RB or on the ground? How did he look on the pull? When covered up by a DL, does he get push or hope to stalemate? Is this player improved from last year? That’s just a representative sample across multiple runs, not lowlights per se. For what’s it’s worth, he pass blocked pretty well except for one miscue. You can also expand your view beyond guard and note overall line play. Who is moving defenders and trying to impose their will? Who is stalemating and hoping the runner does something great?

DJ Campbell too often played with indecision that robbed him of aggression and rendered him less than effective on passing downs. He gave up multiple pressures and a sack. He was better on run downs, though the promised road grading didn’t show up. As I’ve cautioned every time he has been brought up in the offseason, interior offensive linemen who give up free runs at the QB can’t be played long term, no matter their 5 star status. DJ is very inexperienced, so some time must be given for him to level up before moving him out.

On the interior OL, the coaches also have to choose from the best of imperfect options and try to coach ’em up. There is no panacea. Kelvin Banks and Christian Jones played well overall. While I can call out some individual player gaffes, the larger responsibility for the line being able to handle stunts, show technique and killer instinct and exhibit pad levels lower than the upper deck rests on Kyle Flood.   I hope his pupils show better coordination in Tuscaloosa, aided by the game plan. As an aside, Rice’s #55 De’Braylon Carroll is a 5-11, 285 pound baller and they had a few guys up front who were relatively capable and played hard.

The last play for Campbell in that video was at the :39 mark (3Q 3:33 3rd and 3…had fun typing this). He gets rolled up. Was he injured, or did he get pulled for suckage?

He was laying on the field for a few minutes and then hobbled off.  Gerry said he was limping after the game.

So Connor goes from starter to duking it out at a different position whereas the backup goes to starter without question?
Ask @HenryJames

It’s going to be interesting to see the depth chart for Bama at Guard. Neto was the best on the day, with the caveat he came in later vs a more tired defense.  Connor and Campbell were straight up poor. Campbell is in a boot. I wouldn’t be surprised to see 2 new starters for Bama, health permitting on Hutson.

For starting as many games as he has Jake Majors looked like shit Saturday.

He can turn people but he can't push anybody.  He had a few good plays in the run game where he turned people.  But he also had his usual handful of plays where he got shoved into the backfield.   It's just always going to be a limitation of the run game with him at center.

Connor is in that group also. He doesn’t move people. Campbell struggled also, but I think that was more about him playing his 1st game. We have seen him move people before. Majors is never going to be a road grader. He can be adequate, but his weakness is magnified when you put a guard next him with the same struggles.

I notice when Connor pulls a lot he just gets stonewalled like half the time.

Depending on how hurt Hutson is the move for Bama may be Banks - Neto - Majors - Campbell/Conner - Jones
