Scatter shot thoughts, observations, questions on Sark:

*most of the national guys are split on the toss.  Some say awful call others broke it down and thought it was poor execution

*Sark is our guy.  Don’t waste time or energy on him leaving.
*why was sarks offense significantly worse than Shanahan’s when he took over for him in Atlanta?  Turnover of personnel , new scheme?

*idk if he needs to give up play call g duties yet.  He seems very attached to it

*with nil, I’m not sure it’s possible to achieve the level of talent he had at bama. Not sure tosu has done that

*would he be my #1 choice if I had a blank slate to hire a hc?  No.

I've seen a lot of stuff online and on TikTok calling out Kyle Flood and the OL, especially on that second down call at the goal line. Seems like the OL had issues the last two games for sure.

Do first half of the season red zone percentages vs back half, it is not pretty. When competition improved vs the best teams we played we were absolutely terrible in the red zone. We regressed as the season went along and ultimately finished two years in a row with red zone failures with a national title trip on the line.

We played a trash schedule. That’s not sarks fault.  Who knew Michigan, Florida, aggy and ou would suck?  Ok maybe the last two but still.  We didn’t beat anyone with a pulse.

It all averages out. That’s how stats work. It includes the creampuffs and tough games everyone has. It was a literal coin flip scoring TD’s in the redzone against anyone last year starting with the season opener against Rice. That wasn’t the case this year.

I would expect there to be a dip the second half of this year when you play 5 straight ranked opponents to end the season, including Georgia and Ohio State.

I’m not saying it doesn’t need improvement. You want to be above 70% in the redzone converting to TD’s. That puts you right around top 25 in the country. All I said was 50% TD rate to 64% TD rate is a significant jump regardless of schedule or order of games and paints a more accurate picture than looking up overall redzone scoring which factors in field goals, which we sucked at.

Sark is a good coach and will continue to win a lot of games here.  In the same breath it's clear some teams/coaches have figured out his offense (which rarely uses the middle of the field).  He at the very least needs to self scout and figure out what he needs to do to fix it, and possibly hand over the offense to someone that can dedicate all their attention to it.

Maybe he rarely used the middle of the field because of Quinn’s limited arm strength.

Actually, Florida redeemed themselves, winning their last 4.  They were a clear top 15 team.  A&M?  Not so much.

Florida was absolute dogshit vs. us without Lagway. Almost feels like they conceded that game before kickoff.

We have a guy called "baby rhino" and didnt just try running him up the middle, what are we doing, Stevie.....

And last I checked we didn't use the "mobile QB" we have on the bench for any of the plays in the RZ against OSU on the final drive despite Sark calling plays that might have benefited from such a player.

. . . and it's entirely possible the "mobile QB" was concussed and not available to take any more snaps.

That is actually a very fair point.

So often execution is poor because the call is awful.  In that situation we have 9 guys to block 11.  They are claiming they anticipated the call, but even if not, the S was walked down to the play side.  There is little chance of success execution when the defense has numbers and knows the play.

Every play created will work if executed perfectly.  Yet we see so many failed plays.  Odd.

Agreed, not Sark's fault but the schedule this year ended up not doing us any favors.

OU was a disaster and those two long Wisner runs near end of 1st half put the game away after looking pretty shitty on offense.

That Florida win in particular gave Sark too much confidence in his conservative play calling for the rest of the year. We had some big yardage plays with basic short stuff. Florida threw in the the towel early and that game should've been considered a throwaway instead of some sort of vindication.

A&M just completely shit the bed and barely put up a fight.

The Arkansas and A&M games were absolute clunkers on offense, particularly second half. Defense saved the day in both situations.

Kentucky second half wasn’t much better than those two games

Ou was so bad on offense that herbstreit wandered out loud in the middle of a national broadcast how they would score.  His job is to make the game compelling and he killed it.

our offense kept ou alive in our last two meetings.  Also bolden falling on the bolden fumble killed ou

Their one and only goal that day was to not get shutout so they could keep their scoring streak alive.

Sark is getting it done.  Would you rather be in the Holiday Bowl, again?

He is getting done but he also needs to fix his shortcomings.  Like I said earlier, I'm not sure if he needs to hand off play calling to someone that can dedicate all their energy on gameday to it but there are a lot of games this year where the offense was just dead.  Seems like it's hard for him to focus on the details while also trying to decide what to call on the next series.  That pitch play call on 2nd down from the 1 was one of the worse play calls I've seen him make.

As someone who has watched the football program at the University of Texas wander through the hinterlands led by coaches named Akers, Mackovic, Herman, Strong, McWilliams, et al, I will gladly take what Sark is delivering.

All day, every day.

They were missing a lot more than just Lagway.  Pretty much their entire starting offense was hurt.

I posted this on the QE thread, I think. My son and I went back and watched every snap Arch got this year. Man, the offense is TOTALLY different with him at QB. Just go watch it if you dare. (I was getting frustrated watching) There were called rollouts. He picks up yards with his feet when the pocket collapses. He throws a catchable deep ball. Next year should be great, I just hope Sark doesn't try and change Arch too much. Just let him do Arch things. I can't wait to see what that looks like.

Just look at pre injury QE offense this year. Note the difference there too.

Arkansas yes, but I wouldn't call A&M a clunker. We put up 461 yards and moved the ball at will pretty much the entire game, including the second half where we had 222 yards. The two stupid Ewers turnovers inside the 10 and Auburn missing his usual before-half kick prevented that from being a 34-0 laugher.

I hope Sark wakes up this morning knowing that as a coach he got this team so close but in the end when a team is playing for championships against equal talent it is the coach that makes the difference. The Bert pattern of missing field goals had been apparent all year and it cost the team an SEC championship game. Sark should have seen this coming and it should have been corrected it before that game.

Sark started the season knowing that red zone offense was his biggest weakness since they finished ranked 89th as per surly poster in the prior year and finished ranked 111th this season. He knew what players he had, he knew their strengths and their weaknesses and yet he could not design a few play calls that would work even when the defense knew what was coming.

To me I think Sark thought he had the element of surprise on the pitch out. Championship teams and championship coaches are never surprised Sark needs to start by assuming they always know what is coming and you are still going to be better because you have your players better prepared. In practice fucking tell your #1s what is coming and defend it like they would and and execute it until they can't stop it no matter how many times they try. If you can't get it to be successful then draw up the next play until you have the one that will work.

This seems relevant given some of the recent rumors:

If Sark takes that job some day he will be interviewed about taking the Cowboys job and he will give the Saban answer about taking the Miami job. "I had a bad case of the dumbass".

So where does Manning transfer?

Georgia?

Alabama?

Ole Miss?

Knowing us, we’ll probably go hire the flavor of the year again and go right back to irrelevance after almost making it back to the mountaintop.

Cheez-Its?!  If lucky.  More likely the Scooter's Coffee Bowl.

Is 6 wins even possible next year?

He transfers to Ohio State.  Then Taaffe comes back and scoops and scores the game winner in the semifinals next year

I’d take either the Cheez It or Pop Tart bowls. They’re delicious

Depends - is the inside flavor cheez-it or is the outside cheez-it with a filling that complements the cheez-it?
