How has that worked for us the last 20 years?

Super! Just kidding.

we need a comprehensive process of interviewing multiple people. Not just swinging at the hottest thing out there whether it be a good fit or not bc a group of BMDs have predetermined who they want. That has to stop. Jmo.

when it comes to plinking down money for a war chest to get recruits and players they want BMDs are phenomenal. We lack for nothing in that regard. But we have to coral them in terms of a HC search.

That's a lot of words. Even for me. Let me see what I can do.

Look dude Indiana didn't do anything special. They went and got a solid QB out of the transfer portal. Again. Three of their top 4 receivers are from the portal. Their two top RBs are also from the portal. Even then, last year they had a favorable schedule(like aggy) and got throttled by Ohio State 38-15 when they finally faced them. Then they lost their first game in the playoffs. That's a feel good story, FOR THEM. You can stay at Indiana for decades by repeating that process. Meanwhile here you guys wanna jettison Sark to the moon for being 7-3 against a schedule that included the number 1 and 5 teams, and two top 10 wins vs Oklahoma and Vandy. AFTER two straight playoff appearances.

You guys expect us to just reload like Ohio State and Georgia, but don't see that we don't get the talent they do. WE think our shit doesn't stink, but the top kids see us as a tier below them. And why wouldn't they? In their lifetime Texas hasn't been good. So we get project 5 stars, instead of the ready to go kids. Cam Williams was a project, and spent his time here busting protections with regularity. DJ Campbell still isn't polished. Wingo can't catch, isn't physical, and doesn't run crisp routes. But man can he run past defenders on lesser teams on screen passes. Let's not leave out our QB. Now thinking back to when I heard the Manning really wanted him to sit and learn, I realize they knew what we now know, which is the kid was behind developmentally.

Texas, Ohio State, and Georgia all replaced their QBs this season. We are the only ones struggling, and it's not just "the line". We have the worst QB of the three currently. We have the worst receiver corps of the three. We have the worst O-line of the three. We have the worst RBs of the three. We have the worst TEs of the three. I mean, we had 2 receivers go first round in the last few years. Ohio State has had 4. We got 2 4th round TEs. Ohio State had a 4th and 3rd. We got a 1st, 2nd, and 4th and 5th rnd back out the last few years. Ohio State has had 2 2nd rounders, so we got them there. But then we've gotten a 1st rounder, a 5th rounder, and two 6th round O-line drafted. In that same time frame Ohio State has had 3 1st round, a 3rd, 3th, 6th, and 7th.

When we won the National Championship, USC was the talk of the town. However, if you look back we were the better team across the board from top to bottom. When Bama was winning they were better top to bottom. Same with Georgia. Same with Ohio State last year. If we wanna get to winning titles we need to find a way to start getting better players.

Here are all your words back at you.

I very much agree with the premise that our talent is overrated.  In some cases, that means we're more likely than OSU or Georgia to land a five-star bust or underachiever, in other cases, evaluation, development, and utilization are lacking.  But, I don't think any of those "conditions" are permanent statuses predetermined by who is the head coach.

Our number 1 ranking and all the 9.95 hype should put to bed any notion that the pundits can determine with any certainty how talented we are or aren't.

I think Sark intellectually knows or is learning what it really takes to build a perennial football power like UGa, OSU, or past Bama.  He hasn't perfected any of it in practical application.

He has certainly taken us to places we haven't been in more than a decade, or two.

But, for whatever reason or combination of reasons, he let up a bit this off-season.  He thought he had in place what he needed.  And was desperately and disastrously wrong.

What I don't buy into is all these wild-ass speculations about how fucked up is his personal life and how he's shooting heroin in back-alley east Austin early Sunday morning while the WR corps runs trains on his wife.

Did he have some potential distractions this off-season?  Hell yes he did, just from the factual record.  Did he let them bother him too much?  Maybe so.  But that's life.  I think I'd rather have a coach that's human enough to be bothered rather than the type of psychopath that doesn't let that stuff distract him from work/coaching goals.

He either adapts or he doesn't.  We'll see.

Does Texas have a shitty roster?  If so, who’s in charge that should have made sure that didn’t happen?  I agree with you that talent wins championships.  This team should have been good enough to make the playoffs.  They shouldn’t have struggled all year with mediocre teams like Miss St and KY and losing to FL.  They shouldn’t be able to stay within 10-14 points of GA in Athens.  Worse teams than ours seemed able to hang with Georgia.  I am not arguing to fire Sark (not sure he is that great either) but things need to change if Connor Stroh is the guy you trot out at left guard in year 5 of your tenure.  I would also argue that Sark has had a relatively good year when it comes to injuries.  These players, for the most part, are who he and his staff wanted to play all year.  It’s not like the O line sucks because the top 3 starters blew their knees out in the offseason or earlier in the season.

We are where we are because we believed we were or would be better at just a few positions and that turned out not to be the case. Everyone here knows what those positions are. When we improve at those positions we will return to playing high level football. It's not that hard. And yes, it's on the coach to make that happen but for us not to have any dropoff is silly. That's what I am saying.

They do a great job raising the money for the talent. So I won’t fault them on that. Their wallets are open there. But letting them have way too much power to pick the HC is where I get frustrated bc it is why we don’t have consistency. Good programs don’t hire and fire routinely. They just don’t. They hire the right guy and when that guy either retires or decides to move on they have a good plan set up for a replacement. We don’t do that shit, Mack fucked it up by not retiring bc the heir apparent would have been Muschamp. Would he have been a good HC or still been here? I cannot answer that. But Mack fucked it up. So we went swinging in another direction. And it was a domino effect. Strong was not given all the support nor as much time even if I totally believe he wasn’t the guy. So the Houston BmDs swung their dicks and went for Herman the hottest name out there at the time with connections to big time Ohio state. His off the field shit and behavior fucked his shit up so we go swinging again and got Sark. But we are always on our heels and good programs are not. OU got screwed by low character Lincoln Riley and rebounded with Venables but they had a good 20 year plus run nearly of consistency of coaching. That’s why we fail.

IMO. The 90’s were the same tale. Fire Akers. Poach McWiliams who is a good dude but wasn’t the dude. Go for an asshole Mackovic. Who we canned and then we finally get consistency with Mack but he won’t leave when he said he would, it created a vacuum for the BMDs to swing their power and dicks bc they wanted Saban. And Mack fucked that up. So we got new AD who hire Shaka and Strong. And set us up for another rollercoaster 🎢

Comparing last seasons IU team to this years is certainly a choice. Have you watched them play? They are playing elite football.

I was hoping our RB room was just banged up and not 100% and Georgia was gonna be the game where they stepped it up. Unfortunately it does seem like this years RB room is not at a level commensurate with the compensation.

The OL is bad and there's no real reason for that.

The WR are significantly worse than last year and as bad as I can remember going back to 2021.

The IDL got their shit together and has played substantially better since Florida.

EDGE is damned good.

LB is good enough but we can get more there.

DBs have been hot and cold, but mostly hot. Not sure how much is scheme and how much is clear lack of film study or football IQ. Physically they aren't getting juked out of their pants they are blowing assignments or coverages are way too soft.

A head coach can easily work with his staff to work on all these things, right now it seems like sark is more interested in being an OC than he is a head coach. He hasn't been honest with his assessment of personnel, he's clearly spending too much time on stuff that isn't the other team that they are facing and the team is no longer responding well to him, the team quit in that second half and it's fucking embarassing.

Lefau was awful.  I only recall hearing his name a couple of times.  Considering the GA TEs were running free all night, that's not a good thing.

Also, we still bring up Ingram's fumble years later.  At this point, I'm wondering what the record is for horribly timed drooped passed - mostly looking at you Wingo.

I get what you are saying just not sure I agree with this.  If Sark is really an offensive genius it is quite shocking that he looked at the talent at OL, RB, TE and thought, yeah this is all we need.  That’s actually pretty scary if you think about it.   Sadly, we don’t need amazing players at those positions.  A few competent players at say center/left guard, RB and a TE and this team is in the playoffs and maybe even beats an Ohio State or Georgia even with all the talent they have.  That being said, someone also needs to fix the secondary as the blown coverages are not acceptable at the rate they have been happening.  Either the coaches can’t coach or the players are idiots or maybe a little of both but still unacceptable.

This team has lacked and continues to lack fundamental aspects of game play.

This team has lacked and continues to lack sound player evaluation which is not on 9.95ers but the coaching staff. (Saw a mediocre boxer knock out a nobody)

This team lacks and continues to lack game plans that align to the strengths of the players. (No study of the boxer during spars for issues and strengths)

This team has lacked and continues to lack player development. (Too much time on weights not enough bag and sparring work)

This team has lacked and continues to lack game plans that align to the strength and weakness of the opponents team and strategies. (No jab, no body blows)

This team has lacked and continues to lack the ability to put teams away despite substantial leads at various points. (no hook, no uppercut)

This team has lacked and continues to lack in game adjustment to specific strategies the opponent has deployed against Texas. (No counter punch)

This team has lacked and continues to lack any ownership of errors or accountability. (Blaming judges when there was a KO count off)

This isn't just this year, but every year of Sarks tenure. We can raw raw our participation trophies and put them on the wall but choosing to ignore the very clear, continued and ongoing issues in favor of fear of change isn't going to improve things. Sark isn't going to improve either. He's shown what he is and always will be. Are you familiar with the story of the frog and scorpion?

In year 5 of any coaches’s tenure though he has enough of his guys and his inability or ability to get the most out of his players is on him, the criticism sark faces for this year is on him.

he chose to move away from normal practices and employ a slap dick approach to the offseason. So if he cannot scheme around a busted o line or if his playmakers ain’t making plays it’s on him. And he had a bye week. And he had knowledge KS would try an onside kick. It’s on sark. And I will not excuse him for a slapdick season.

Eric Nahlin: How Steve Sarkisian can get Texas back on track ASAP (Part 1)

Quote

The 2025 Texas football season has spun off course, but the program didn’t hit a tree. Just as drivers travel with multiple cars to get back in the race ASAP, Steve Sarkisian will have another chance to buy parts and fine-tune his car to get back on the track. As we all know, how he restores and modifies that car throughout the offseason could dictate how his career at Texas is going to go.

That does not mean he’s on the hot seat; we’re all just going to learn a lot about him, and from there we’ll adjust our opinion up or down on whether or not he can bring a title to Texas. After being asked yesterday if I felt “Sark has lost a bit of his fire and drive to be great,” I replied, “My default is he had one bad offseason, but we’re going to find out. I was going to write this morning ‘I’m doubling down on Steve Sarkisian,’ but I want to see evidence he’s doubling down on himself first.”

What Would Sark Doubling Down on Himself Look Like?

What would Sark doubling down on himself look like? First and foremost, it starts with introspection. Sark runs an audit on all aspects of the program after every season—player development, roster needs, strength and conditioning, etc. His biggest project this season is himself. He needs to identify why obvious mistakes were made in the previous offseason and how he plans to address them. If, despite being in the middle of the season, he hasn’t already started that process, that would be a bad signal going forward. Fortunately, I feel confident he has started that process.

An audit of Sark’s management of the program would come to a few potential conclusions:

1. Too Much Trust in Staff

He trusted and signed off on Kyle Flood not taking any offensive linemen in the portal. I don’t know how Sark, and his power to veto that decision, came to the same conclusion.

2. Too Rigid in His Preferred Schemes

Sark needs to watch the Florida and Vanderbilt games back-to-back to not only understand why it took so long to tailor the proper offense to his personnel but to also get an idea if that’s the direction he needs to go in 2026. This is very important to determine when it comes to roster management.

3. Poor Evaluation of the Current Offensive Roster

This ties into the O-line, but it’s clear he didn’t have a No. 1 wide receiver either. Ryan Wingo was not ready to be the guy this season. I’m far from being out on Wingo, but he’ll still have questions going into next season, let alone this one. How was that missed? Some might say Emmett Mosley was hurt to start the season. That wasn’t ideal, but the thought with Mosley wasn’t that he’d come in and be the No. 1.

Sark also did not have anything close to approximating the proper tight end personnel to run two-tight end sets. And then there’s running back which seemed to be as obvious of a need as offensive line. Was he too selfless when it came to adding offensive transfers? Did he have too much faith in his ability to scheme his talent into being better than their individual talent or readiness?

4. What Is His Run Game Identity for 2026?

Assuming some coaching turnover, this is a major question for next year.

  • If he wants to run outside zone, he can get by with smaller, experienced players.
  • If he wants to run downhill “because that’s who we are,” then he needs big, powerful linemen.
  • If he wants to run both, then he needs elite talent and he needs to be willing to spend big, to the possible detriment of other position groups.

5. Strength & Conditioning Considerations

I’m not as down on Torre Becton as some of my colleagues and friends, but I do have questions about why the offensive linemen aren’t stronger. I know the answer—they don’t lift heavy enough—but why is that? Sark should call Pete Carroll and Nick Saban and share strength numbers for his offensive linemen and ask how they compare to offensive linemen at USC and Alabama. It’s either strength, technique, inflexibility, or a combination thereof. Each deficiency comes with its own follow-up questions.

6. Culture

With each assignment bust or penalty flag I see floating through the air, I wonder if Sark’s consistent talk of “culture” is him trying to manifest it into reality. I mean, I know he’s done very well to foster a strong locker room. We chronicled the culture when it was a zygote and watched it grow. But when I see lack of discipline, and sometimes even lack of effort, I begin to wonder if culture slipped and if so, why?

7. Willingness to Make Hard Decisions

You can’t be a leader—much less a leader of an enterprise the size of Texas Football—if you don’t make hard, even painful decisions, whether it’s regarding his coaching staff or current roster. I’m sure there’s more that I’m missing, but that’s what comes to mind this morning. There is a lot of work to be done, but Sark has already made much bigger fixes in his time at Texas, and he’s been through much more adversity in life.

I guess the big question is are we better off nuking our HC and starting over. This doesn’t seem like a good year to unnecessarily be looking for a new head coach though. I think we are closer to winning a championship than not from a totality standpoint. Yes this year was a step back but we could easily rebound next year. It took both Kirby and Day roughly 5 years to win one. Some of you may be wanting to punt on Sark too soon. Next year tells the tale for me.

Most important coaching week for Sark since November of 2021

After an awful fourth quarter and yet another loss to Georgia, Steve Sarkisian now faces his toughest coaching task since November of 2021. Not just his toughest, but easily most important.

While that may seem extreme because it was year one, this is a true "culture" test and will be very telling about the future of the program under Sarkisian. Texas lost 30-7 in Ames to Iowa State November 6, and followed up by surrendering 57 points at home to Kansas. There were three other losses wrapped around those two games, but it was Iowa State and Kansas that showed a truly broken culture in the Texas program that Sarkisian and staff had to get out of the locker room.

Since that time, the only talk about the "culture" at Texas has been positive through the program build. You guys know I think "culture" is a bit of a catchphrase that is coach speak for the most part.

But real talk about a program's "culture" is front and center this week. Because it's about to be tested in a way it hasn't in a while.

Texas is atop the underachievers list of teams this season. Whether one agrees or disagrees with the No. 1 pre-season ranking, this team is much more talented than the performances on the field this season. It's been an undisciplined, inconsistent, at times the look of disinterested leading down the path of how much do you truly care in aftermath of the Florida game.

I believe this week and Saturday is going to define Sarkisian's tenure moving forward. Texas simply can't lose to a bad Arkansas team. But just as important, the Texas team has to have the appearance that they are pissed off, truly care and are taking the field Saturday to prove a point. Beat Arkansas by a couple of scores, and then beat Texas A&M in Austin six days later. There simply is no other option if Sarkisian want's to keep any of the positive momentum that was built with the program the two seasons prior.

As bad as the Georgia game was in the way the loss happened, a loss to Arkansas would be disastrous, period. It would send very difficult questions rippling through the university, fan base, nationally, the NIL agent world and more.

And I will depart with this ... a loss to this Arkansas team should be looked at as unacceptable. Absolutely unacceptable.

Coach speak is over. Nobody wants to hear it. This week is 100% about accountability, and then performance on Saturday.

The fact Indiana is being discussed for a national championship in football when in not so distant past, their fan base and media would be fully engaged in thump thump season right  now and we are talking about hanging up the cleats a week from Saturday and waiting for the Cheez it Bowl or worse is all we need to know about the status of our program.

Fricken Indiana....    Beam me up!

Texas went on a 9 year stretch of consecutive 10+ win seasons under Mack Brown. We are currently on back to back 10+ win seasons, so these final 3 games may be meaningless for our championship aspirations this season, but if Sark can position this as a rebuilding year where we end the season 10-3, that’s not bad for a floor even under our standards. 9-4 or 8-5 sounds a lot less acceptable for a floor

Ironically, had their power and dicks got their way, getting Saban would've been a godsend. And they were 100% correct on Strong being a retarded hire.

Thanks? You didn't actually respond to any of my substantiative criticism, though. I'll make it simple:

I am of the opinion that Indiana would currently beat us on a neutral field significantly more often than not. I think they're playing better fundamental football. I think this is a key reason they would win. Do you disagree? If so, why? If not, then how does that tie into your thesis that Texas is losing because of some long history of losing? Most players grew up not even being aware Indiana had a football program. You keep mentioning Sark's record this season, and...seriously? I know you know football. You're telling me it's not at all concerning that we demonstrate the same fundamental flaws as we did last year? And the year before that? We are currently #133 in penalties per game, and while I'll lay some of that on bad officiating, it is definitely not entirely the problem. The house is filled with smoke and it's hot, but you're telling me it's fine because the roof hasn't completely collapsed yet and anyway we always expected this tinderbox to go up in flames. We're obviously not going to win the national championship every year, but if we're not making the playoffs with all our resources, it's okay to ask why.

And yes, of course I do expect us to reload like Ohio State and Georgia. We just had the #1 class. Our problem is not our ability to get elite recruits, it's identifying which of those elite recruits are actually going to fit our scheme and succeed as college players. Will we miss on a few? Of course. We'll get some, too, that the other teams never had a chance with because they just want to go to Texas. That said, the NIL era is a different world. Take a look at Indiana and Ole Miss and Texas Tech. These are not teams with a glorious winning history. You mention Wingo as an example - if he's not a "real" 5 star, why the fuck did we pay him like one? If he sucks and is maxed out, that's on us for a shitty eval. If he just hasn't developed, that's also on us. No one is forcing us to go after a bunch of fucking JAG OL - we did that to ourselves. If we want better players, the way to get them is to win in evaluations and development, then put those players in a position to succeed. The staff is responsible. It's okay to admit it.

That said, I don't feel like it would be a good idea to nuke Sark from orbit, especially this year, but he doesn't need an apologist. He's an adult. He's a professional. He's getting paid a ton. He has fucked shit up. He needs to unfuck it. It would be super cool if he quit doing the Mack Brown bullshit of having to have his teeth kicked in before he notices that there's a problem.

In sports its your job to play better than the guy in the same position across from you. No matter what that position is.

It's not just for players. It goes for coaches, too. Sark needs to fire his OC and Defensive Pass Game Coordinator, tell Flood that he doesn't give a fuck if someone is large if they're not ever going to be good at football, and actually pay attention to what is going on with his responsibilities instead of...whatever else was going on this offseason. Maybe then he'll have time to remind players to pay attention to that onside kick or talk to a ref that is "missing" obvious shit.

Did Gerry rate wingo a 5 star? How about Quinn a perfect 1 overall? It’s funny hearing about doing a better job from a guy who has a made up job LOL.

I get what you are saying just not sure I agree with this.  If Sark is really an offensive genius it is quite shocking that he looked at the talent at OL, RB, TE and thought, yeah this is all we need.  That’s actually pretty scary if you think about it.

the number of people who still don't get this is even scarier. Sark was, is, and will continue to be the problem.

it's pretty simple really. sark has done a fine job getting us to almost, and underperforming at a 3 loss level. both of those are pretty good even by texas standards. the question is can he take it another step and beat Georgia and Ohio State. I dunno. most of us dunno. Many of us, no most of us think not. what sark has to do is change. he claims to be a humble guy, who is self-reflective, always looking in the mirror, but this year we see none of that. if he has a come to jesus with himself and we see real change then maybe he can be the guy, but the guy walking the sidelines right now has zero chance of winning the square root of jack shit at Texas.

the good news is it appears he stopped eating his boogers so maybe there is hope. but it remains the same... change or GTFO.

Part of the issue with Mack wasn't so much wasn't the BMD's.     It was DeLoss who thought the program could still be operated like it was in the 1990's going into new century and decade.   The media and recruiting landscape was changing all around us and he and the Department were still stuck on the "We're Texas" would bring in the recruits to all our programs and it didn't work.   He thought the Longhorn Network and trying to be the Alpha Dog  with money bags in the Rig 12 would carry us through the next decade with Mack in charge would work and it was a spectacular failure

Sorry Mrs. Hamilton, I forgot that the expectation of the players starts with what they’re rated generally and then the team they sign with gets shit on for not “developing” those guys. It was mostly a joke but it’s still strange for the guy who cuts the grass to talk shit about the guy who owns the lawn.

Indiana blows this sark coached nightmare of a team out of DKR by 2 scores.

lol amen. I’m not stanning for sark at all, he’s clearly not the coach to win a title at Texas. If recruiting rankings show that we are on par with Georgia, bama, and Ohio state talent/depth wise then those rankings blow. That’s all I’m saying. Sark is also to blame for talent evaluation, so there’s that.

Please.....if Sark is unwilling to go along with a new OC that everyone agrees on not just his hand picked boy, then he needs to go. No one wants to see another season of his piss poor game time play calling, No one wants to see his lack of game awareness and irrational play calling again. Sark needs to be removed from offensive play calling, ideally before then end of the season.

You can't just buy everything you want. If you could we would have it. Some kids wanna go to a winner. My daughter just signed her letter of intent to play college volleyball. Full ride, but a lesser program. Do you know how many of her friends passed on more money because they wanted to go to a bigger/better program? Some kids just wanna be part of a winner. Geography matters too. Ohio State is the ONLY tier 1 program above I-40 from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Sark is ultimately responsible but imo we have to be patient. We've made great strides in getting back to the mountain top, but we have to start looking in the mirror and seeing the 7 that we are, instead of the 10 we think we are.

we're coming off two straight final four's and can't convince kids we're a winner?
