Yeah, but that was really a spotter issue. But yes, they pulled a Sato on Sato. I swear this seems to happen all the time in Indy.

Yep, and the cars ahead were queing up 2-wide, so Grosjean had nowhere to go once he saw them (too late)..

Grosjean does suck though. He's lucky to be alive after his last big fuckup.

Oh yeah, definitely agree that was on his spotter. Just making a joke.

Btw, I watched through the 2012 season and man did Grosjean have a ton of issues that year. He was usually fast but a total liability. It was fascinating to see how passive he drove by the end of the year, because he didn’t want to cause another crash.  You could tell it was really affecting him.

I definitely cut him some slack given the result of the crash, but this is accurate. He just went Leeroy Jenkins cutting across the track in traffic.

That’s amazing. Also crazy to think that Alonso probably wins the 2012 WDC if Grosjean doesn’t hit Hamilton at Spa.

No doubt, imho (of course assuming he'd go on to finish in the points). He only needed 4.

It's not talked about much, but Alonso has missed 3 additional WDCs by a total of 8 points.

Wow, without the halo it's amazing there weren't more deaths. Some of those crashes shown in that video had me holding my breath. Halo rules.

The halo does indeed rule. It was my second choice of the options that were punted around before they chose it, but it was a great choice and has imho saved multiple lives already. And now I don't even notice it, esp on the new cars.

I watched the 2010 Abu Dabhi GP not too long ago. As a Ferrari fan, it was fucking painful. If they just let Alonso run through the graining phase on his first stint, he likely wins the title.

Yep. When they pitted him I (like many people) instantly knew Ferrari had blown it and Alonso was probably screwed.

Andretti reveals details of F1 team plan as ‘clock ticks’ on FIA call https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/andretti-reveals-details-f1-team-fia-call/8515129/

Michael Andretti says he needs an answer from the FIA by next month on if he can get a Formula 1 team entry for 2024.

Andretti reveals details of F1 team plan as ‘clock ticks’ on FIA call
The American’s Andretti Global operation has applied to enter F1, and needs to get a green light soon if it is going to have enough time to get things up and running.

Although there is no formal timeline for new entry deadlines in to F1, Andretti is clear he cannot wait much longer for the FIA to make a decision.

Speaking exclusively to Motorsport.com about the situation, Andretti said: “We need it fast because the clock’s running for us to be there in 2024. We need to know within a month.”

Andretti says he is already quite clear in some key details about his F1 entry, with him committed to bringing his IndyCar driver Colton Herta to grand prix racing.

Andretti believes Herta’s presence would be one of the keys to making the team’s presence a success for F1 as a whole, at a time when there are two races in America – at COTA and new-for-2022 Miami – and a third is being planned for Las Vegas.

He suggested that the way Max Verstappen has boosted Dutch interest in grand prix racing proves that an American driver could do the same for the potential audience in the USA.

“You look at the growth in ratings in the Netherlands because they’ve got a driver,” he said. “There’s none here. If you get a good driver with a good following like Colton, I think they’ll be in great shape.

“To me it’s a no-brainer. I don’t know what the hold-up is, so hopefully they figure it out. The way we’re going to do it is going to be first class all the way. We’ve got big plans that will really be good for Formula 1.

“My backers are great, they’re in it to be competitive, they’re not just in it to say they’re in Formula 1. They’re sports guys, they’ve turned sports franchises around from where they weren’t competitive to then being competitive, so they know how to do this stuff.

“So it would be a shame if we couldn’t pull it off. It’ll be good for everybody.”

While Michael’s father, 1978 F1 world champion Mario Andretti, has suggested that Renault was the most likely engine partner for the team, no final call has been taken on this front.

It is understood that Ferrari remains an option if the team does get approval for the 2024 entry.

Michael Andretti said Renault was “one of the options”, but clarified there was “another one” and that no decision had yet been taken.

Regarding the team’s factory, Andretti said that he would prefer to base the operation in the United States in the long term, but understand he may also need a European headquarters.

“Eventually we’d like to build it here,” he said. “The first car would have to be farmed out, sort of like the way Haas does it now. And then eventually build our own car.

“My dream is to do it here, to have a true American car. We’d still have a big presence in the UK, but have the actual building of it here.”

On the possibility of becoming an F1 team boss, Andretti said: “I’m very excited about it.

“I’ve wanted to do it for a long time. I think it’s great for our brand and would put us at another level.

“It would raise our whole game, raise this [IndyCar] game as well. I’m in the business of racing and I always want us to do better.”

DTS Trailer:

Sweet, can’t wait to watch.  DTS was the main reason I got into F1 a few years back and I’m grateful for that. But, r/formula1, this board and etc are where it’s at for me in terms of F1. I’ve learned more here than the show, especially where the show gets it completely wrong. So as fan still learning F1, I won’t take DTS seriously as some do but I’ll still enjoy it’s entertaining set up and the driver interviews.

Watching practice sessions is where it’s at.

It does have a funny, hanging out with your buddies and shooting the breeze sort of feel. The commentators are still talking about F1, but kind of rib each other, talk about random stuff, and are just way more casual than on race day or qualifying. It's very chill.

This!    I have learned a lot listening to practice sessions.   For me the progression was:  DTS - races - then r/formula1, surly, twitter follows, podcasts, F1TV archives and tech talks...

this is pretty much identical for me. The new regs for this season have really got me going down some serious tech/aero rabbit holes.

What’s a neutral flag? Why do we even need flags (they’re still fighting World War 2, I know)

If no flags, then how would we know the national anthem of drivers to play who haven't lived in their home countries for years as they all head to Monaco?

It seems like when Max’s car went flying over Lewis, without the halo Lewis would be dead.

And Grosjean would definitely no longer be with us.

The halo, even though it wouldn't have saved him, always gets me thinking about Bianchi. I can't believe it's almost been 8 years since the incident and 7 since he died. His legacy is the VSC which has worked to do more than just save the drivers from themselves. RIP and Forza Jules.

he's toast now, right?

on one hand? it sucks for any specific driver.

on the other hand? they guy deserves a seat less than just about anyone in the last few years. at least Zhou (probably) brings a bunch of new eyes and sponsorship $$ with him.

Would it not have? My understanding is that he rode up under the crane truck. Would that not have ridden up on the halo?

Just one day after the FIA stopped short of following a recommendation from the International Olympic Committee to prevent Russia athletes from taking part in international events, Britain's Motorsport UK has announced more draconian measures.

In a statement it announced that no Russian or Belarusian-licenced teams, competitors or officials will be allowed to enter or participate in sanctioned events in the UK.

Red Bull is up there since they’re lobbying to raise it more.

Allegedly, the only car to actually be at minimum is the Alfa.

I've also seen a report that the Alpine came in underweight.

As I understand it, the crane would have just crushed the halo and then impacted the helmet anyway.

IMHO it's not a foregone conclusion that the halo would have failed in that collision. It's incredibly strong. However, keeping the driver's head from contacting the other vehicle is only part of the problem. In a high-energy collision with massive deceleration, such as this one, the driver is still subject to all of those forces. He could easily have been killed by brain or other trauma without his head ever striking or being struck by anything outside his car.
