Don’t Look Up

Much better than I was expecting, but my god did it hit close to home. Yes, some of the bits are over the top satire, but the various social media, politics, news cycle, favorability ratings, capitalism beats each ring depressingly true on multiple levels.
You could almost predict how any given situation will churn out.

We could all truly come together and work to slow/stop the existential crisis to the benefit of all, but instead self interest prevails, particularly in our leaders and decision makers.

The charging for snacks bit was hysterical.

Same reason I can't watch a movie where a parent loses a child.  Just too emotionally raw.  The fact that this film might as well be a fucking documentary makes it that much worse.

No service out on the ledge ?

"Have fun with Jason."

"Jason? Oh shit!"

That one was pretty obvious. And hilarious.

The whole section on exploitation/mining, the Bash tech, and escaping to space with the donors, etc hit the mark. The demeanor of Peter Isherwood, complete with hair sniffing and annoyance at questions of substance--hit even closer as an amalgam of billionaire bully boys who bowl everyone over with a smile and vague hand waving.

Each scene had a few bits and pieces so noticing each one while following the plot was challenging. The WH being packed up (while the Cabinet meeting was going on) was a clue that I missed until later during the Bash launch. And, it hit on several levels.

Jonah's character and the plastic water bottles--stressing the wastefulness with them being tossed around, but wasn't he drinking with two hands(?) and then later the crowd was tossing them at him.

Like @Bateshorn commented, multiple levels and a decent film.

Forgetting her son was the most lol part of the whole movie for me. Just perfect. And Don jr sitting there convincing himself she was coming back. Chef’s kiss.

Absolutely this.  The willingness to wager all life on the planet for a possible $140 trillion payout, and then have the nerve to try to spin it as something that would solve all of society's problems if it worked out - just spot on.

I think the Mark Rylance character (BASH ceo) was a fantastic mashup of Steve Jobs, Elon Musk and Marshall Applewhite, the leader of the Heaven’s Gate cult that “escaped” earth via spacecraft hidden by a comet.

Not sure why no one mentions Zuckerberg also. The whole algorithm thing was clearly a nod to Facebook.

About to go visit the other thread, but it’s Leo. He HATES the right wing. Anyone who thinks this wasn’t more geared against the right is stupid.

It’s quite the case of a lack of self awareness and both sides-ism. 100% of the satire is aimed at the right but they latch onto something minor like only Dems would nominate a woman for POTUS so BOTH SIDES!!! IT’S A PERFECTLY BALANCED SATIRE OF ALL POLITICS!!!

I'm still having scenes pop into my brain that make me groan with recognition: the Rocket Challenge or whatever it was called--I think I need to go to the hospital guy was just mmmhmmm.

Yes, it's the billionaire bully boy group and there were enough refs to various 'quirks' they have to be rather inclusive of most of them. Plus Jonah Hill's Jason character at the end was a YouTube channel nod:

What' up, y'all? I'm the last man on Earth. Shit's all fucked up. Don't forget to like and subscribe. We out here.

I was watching an interview with Billy Bob Thorton the other day in support of sling blade, and he talks about the subtlety that’s necessary to reach certain audiences when you have a lesson in the movie. if there’s one area that this movie missed ( and there are a lot more than one ) that is it.  Ends up in just preaching to the choir without that subtlety.

went ahead and pulled it up

“If you have a big old $98 million movie with all the big stars in it and say ‘this movie is about racism,’ well the racists won’t go see it”  - this movie’s flaws in one sentence

This is a good point, but I don't really think Leo or McKay meant for this to be a lesson.  I think it was more them venting their frustrations.

His characteristics were more reflective of Jobs and Musk so they stand out but he was just a caricature of a Big Tech Billionaire and could represent a lot of different people. There isn't anything unique about Facebook that differs from the rest of the pack they are just ham fisted with how they go about things. I'd also say that Google probably has a much deeper understanding of people than Facebook. Facebook tracks a lot of social data that people are not ashamed to share whereas Google collects all the data people prefer to keep to themselves.

Not that it matters who is the worst offender, the real problem is that we don't own our data and companies are legally allowed to monetize.

I love those Inside the Actors' Studio interviews, thanks for posting that one. I watched it a long time ago so it was good to see it again.

With respect to the writers, this was from an interview out of Colorado where both writers have ties:

Sirota: I really have never seen anything like this [response to movie]. Everybody has a right to their opinion on whether it’s a good or bad movie, but I believe the tenor of some of the criticism reflects a judgment or an analysis of the message of the movie. If it didn’t have that message, that tenor would be much less frantic and furious. It’s a hero story of these scientists trying to muddle through institutions and systems that make it impossible to do the right thing.

A movie like this is supposed to make people think, but I’m worried people have closed their minds to it because of some association with the director, or because they hate me, or the baggage they bring. But its ambition is not to be clever for critics, it’s to reach the widest possible audience with this message.

I don't know why, but the thing that keeps sticking with me is the billionaire and president running off with "Um, I have to go to the bathroom."

One of the things I think they missed on (which I believe was mentioned earlier or in the other thread) was when the Don't Look Up people turn on the president and scream "you lied to us!"  That would not and will not occur, with regard to covid or climate change.  They just move the goal posts or completely deny reality.  With climate change, you will have people literally drowning, dying of drought, starvation, whatever who will steadfastly claim that it wasn't man's fault, it was just how nature works.  They will never admit they were wrong or culpable.

A larger percentage will do as you say than not, but there are some who will feel betrayed. Those feelings don't always manifest themselves in an about face with respect to beliefs, though, for the last sentence you wrote is the truest of all--to admit being mistaken, at fault, or gullible takes a very staunch and humble character.

It hits the right harder (ffs, there are active white supremacy adjacent politicians in office on that side).

But it also goes after Obama and Hillary by putting them as facets of the President’s amalgamation of Presidents (and an almost President). The whole “let’s study the problem” approach is a neoliberal tool to not act on a problem.

They absolutely shit on the DC news media - which is well deserved. Mika has to be pissed to be portrayed accurately as vapid.

The tech business billionaire had some Jordan Peterson facets to his delivery.

Jennifer Lawrence rocked that haircut. F the haters.

Fairly comfortable betting that nine out of ten Americans who regularly name drop Soros in that context, if asked, could not pick George Soros out of a lineup nor could answer the following questions:

1) What is the background of George Soros prior to 1970?

2) What is the name of the foundation that George Soros started?

3) What is this Foundation's mission statement?

4) What was Soros first philanthropic effort?

5) How much of his fortune has he given away?

Now, you might say that many people could not answer those five questions. But, how many of those people namedrop him on the regular as a talking point and scapegoat for the ills of the world?

I wonder if we could turn this all around with some Facebook posts or forwarded emails stating that “George Soros wants to stop you from getting universal healthcare!” or “climate change denial is socialism!”,  etc.

I mean, worth a shot.  It can't get any worse from these nutjobs.

Yes, this was the most unrealistic part of the movie. At the point the crowd could physically see the comet, they would immediately acknowledge its existence, pretend to have believed in it all along, and put the blame squarely on the people who had been trying to tell them to look up and do something about it the whole time.
